Ubuntu Networking :: Ping Gets Wrong IP Address?

Mar 14, 2010

my network expertise is tenuous at best. This started because one computer on my network is having trouble updating Google Toolbar information. This is a laptop which joins other wifi networks outside of the house.

Code:
BROKEN:~$ ping toolbar.google.com
PING toolbar.google.com (208.68.139.89) 56(84) bytes of data.

OpenSUSE Network :: "ping Winpc" Resolves To Wrong Ip Address?

Mar 13, 2010

I have a Suse 11.2 machine named "susepc" on a network with some other windows machines. From the Suse 11.2 machine, I try ping winpchere winpc is the name of a windows machine on the LAN but the name resolves to an odd ip address:PING winpc.HOMENET (72.215.225.9)he "HOMENET" is the correct name of the windows workgroup, but the ip address is completely wrong. My LAN is based on 10.20.x.x and the winpc ip address should be 10.20.0.100. I can "ping 10.20.0.100" and it works correctly.Some things:- DHCP server is on the router- pinging from winpc to susepc works perfectly ("ping susepc" resolves to the correct IP address 10.20.0.101 and the pings respond)- "net view" on winpc lists the susepc - SAMBA is installed on susepc- the Netbios name is set to susepc- I have a shared folder on susepc that I can see, create files in, etc. on winpc with no problems.- IPV6 is disabled on susepc- I have tried setting up susepc as a WINS server (Wins Support)
- I have tried setting up susepc as a Local Network Browser

Ubuntu Networking :: Wrong DNS Address After Disconnecting From VPN?

I am using a static IP in my local network. The problem is that I lose dns information after connecting and disconnecting to a VPN by KVpns.As I am using static ip, I entered my dns server to resolv.conf file with "nameserver 192.168.128.4". Networking :: Can't Ping Outside On Specific IP Address

Something strange with my firewall i used firestarter I dont know why i cannot ping outside on a specific IP address here is my setup. I have IP from ISP

192.168.50.1 - eth1

with DHCP features from 192.168.50.1 - 254. my problem is i cannot ping this specific IP address which is 119.93.232.234 if you can try there and pinging is ok but here cannot because that IP address (119.93.232.234) they used that to connect to our openvpn which is the IP is 119.92.56.78 <---- this system linux(centos) or IP has no firewall enabled. meaning i separeted this connection. which my setup is like this for OPenVPN

Ubuntu Networking :: Ping To Offline Host Returns Arbitrary Ip Address?

Mar 17, 2011

A brief description of my network:It is a small home network consisting of an Ubuntu 10.04LTS server edition, an Iomega ix2 NAS, a WinXP pro server and several family laptops.This is all routed through a Netgear WNDR3300 home router. All are assigned IP's via DHCP and all but the laptops are static (via DHCP though). The WAN address/DNS is assigned via DHCP from my ISP.The problem:When one of the machines is offline, Ubuntu does not resolve the netbios name correctly. No surprise here. But what is happening is that it is finding some arbitrary machine on another network. Below is what a ping to an offline host reveals:

Code:
ping -c3 hostname
PING hostname (204.232.162.92) 56(84) bytes of data.

Networking :: Applications Use The "wrong" IP Address?

May 3, 2011

I have a weird problem. My system has two network adapters, one with a 192.x address and one with a 10.x address. I connect to the Internet over a proxy that also has one 192.x address and one 10.x address. The name of this proxy is added to /etc/hosts with the 10.x address. Additionally, the network settings for the 10.x adapter include the proxy as gateway. The 192.x adapter has no gateway. If I ping the proxy, it is correctly resolved over the 10.x address.All my applications are set toirectly connect to the Internet".Some apps (the "good" ones) use the 10.x address to connect to the proxy, while some others (e.g. Firefox, the "bad" ones) use the 192.x address. The latter fail to connect to the Internet because the proxy is configured to let traffic through the 10.x adapter only

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Ping Over Wireless But Can Ping Over Wired?

Jul 24, 2010

I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.

When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.

If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.

I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.

I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.

Slackware :: Cannot Even Ping Address Of Internet Provider

Dec 5, 2010

I have currently installed Slackware 13.1 64bit version on a laptop Acer computer. This computer is connected to my cable service (comcast) modem via a dlink router. This computer has linux and Windows 7 dual boot systems installed. Initially I was able to connect to the internet with either linux or Windows. Now I cannot get on the internet with linux, but I can with windows.

I cannot even ping the address of my internet provider,which I can obtain through windows 7 by running the program ipconfig. When I ping the address, in linux,it gives me the message that "network is unreachable".I can ping it in windows 7.If I run on linux the program ifconfig, it does not even show an ethernet, like it does on my other computer connected to this network.I set the thing up initially with netconfig and used DHCP.As I said, initially it worked.I did not use this computer for some time, and now it has the previously described problems.Where should I start, trying to run this down?I have already done everything I can think of,like powered things off, and reset the cable modem etc.

Networking :: BIND9 SLOW Ping When Ping By Hostname

Feb 1, 2011

I just installed my first EVER bind DNS server. I am running bind9 on Ubuntu 10.04. Everything seems to be working great except one thing: If I ping a host that I have set up in bind by its HOSTNAME the pings take 5-6 seconds to reply/print to the screen between each echo response. If I ping by the host's IP address, they echo back very quickly.

I have read that IPv6 can cause this, but I have disabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf and the problem still exists.

I know everyone says this can't be a DNS issue, but this never was an issue with dnsmasq (which i was using prior), and it doesn't make sense that the ping are ONLY slow when pinging by hostname and not IP.

Configs below:

Ping by hostname - there is a 5-6 second delay between each one of the responses:

Code:

Ping by IP - the responses come VERY quickly one after the other:

Code:

/etc/resolv.conf:

Code:

Code:

rev.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa:

Networking :: Can't Ping Past Gateway / Can Ping Server From Outside

Apr 29, 2010

So, I have an Virtual Machine running CentOS 5.4. It sits behind a hardware firewall which also does NAT'ing. I've set up plenty of these, so I know for sure the firewall and NAT rules are set up correctly. From the host, I can ping anything in my subnet and the gateway. But I can't ping anything else beyond the gateway. I can perform DNS queries and when I try to ping, it finds the appropriate IP address.But from the outside, I can ping the PUBLIC address (It's a 1 public to 1 private address NAT, not 1 public to multiple private). I've tried it with IPTABLES on and off, with no change.

Debian Configuration :: DHCP3 Server Giving Wrong Ip Address?

May 20, 2011

Hey guys. I have a client computer PXE booting from my host computer and it is supposed to give the client the ip address 172.16.0.100 however instead it gives it the ip address 172.16.0.208.

I have this set up working with two other computers and there is no noticeable difference other than mac addresses for the network card.

Here is an extract from my '/etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf' file...

ddns-update-style-none;
option domain-name "example.org";
default-lease-time 600;
max-lease-time 7200;

[Code]....

I have quadruple checked the mac address of the client and it is definitely "00:07:E9:32:16:81" so why is it not giving it the IP address that I have specified?

I tried rebooting a couple times and once that fixed it. Usually it does not. I reloaded (gasp) Windows Vista on it and it worked ok.This last time, I reloaded CentOS it hung on the bootup (ASK ??), I reset it, it rebooted and everything looks ok; for now.
The system says it is presently using driver r8169
