Ubuntu Networking :: Ping Working Fine But No Browsing At Firefox?
Jul 22, 2010
Ubuntu and after installing it i can't browse any internet through firefox although ping is working good and downloading plugins to system to run MP3 or videos is also working fine but can't open any website through firefox and i tried the live cd of Ubuntu 10.4 at other PC and internet was working fine and firefox was working fine
My Windows machine can ping Ubuntu by name, but Ubuntu can only ping the Windows machine by using it's IP address. This was working fine in both directions until I purged Samba. After purging Samba, I couldn't ping in either direction unless I used the IP address. I did some reading and found that Samba provides NetBIOS functionality that allows the machines to resolve host names without a DNS. Since I'm not running a local DNS, I decided to reinstall Samba. Unfortunately, I've not been able to restore it to full working condition. I don't want to use hosts files as all the IP addresses are assigned automatically by DHCP. I want to be able to access the Windows machine by name.
I downloaded the 10.10 desktop version. Everything seems to work fine except Firefox. Sure, I can get on, but getting out is something of a chore. Half the time the page freezes and won't allow me to try anything else.
I tried: Clicking on the red "X" = nothing Right-clicking on the page and selecting "Back" = nothing Right-clicking on the task bar and selecting "Close" = nothing Restarting the computer = nothing
The only way to get out when that happens, is to hold down the "Power" button. I know it's not good for the computer, but being held hostage in Firefox is not good for my patience. Even that is a crap-shoot. Sometimes it boots back up fine, only to resume what happened before the power went out when I log back into Firefox. Sometimes it won't let me out until I scan back to the main page by using the arrows one page at a time. This kind of thing never happened when I had the 9.04.
I have 2 10.04 computers and one win 7 and one vista computer: The win computers can see each other and the ubuntu computers, but the ubuntu computers cannot see each other or the win machines. The ubuntu computers connect to the internet fine and can ping each other. I cannot find settings to correct.
When I started using Firefox It always used to prompt me if I wanted to save the session to start next time when it closed. I accidentally clicked not to ask me to do this action again. And now I want that pop-up box back and I can't find a setting to get it back
I have installed the latest released version of openSUSE, 10.3 or so, and I am having an issue getting the internet to work. The system tells me that I am connected to my wireless network, but firefox does not browse, indicating that it cannot find the network. I'm totally stumped because if my wireless network is connected, why can't I browse?
I am using an virtual machine. where I need to ping from one machine to another. earlier I was able to ping. But after going to google.com once, I cannot ping back to this machine.
But if I gave ping -I eth1 <IP> then I can ping.
I cannot install any package, so tell me solution which includes not installing any package.
I just started having a problem with my 10.04 laptop a few days ago, maybe Thursday, last week. When the computer is plugged into my home network (standard 192.168.1.1 sort of IPs) it works fine, but when I try to connect to my work network (130.15.90.XX) I am unable to pick up an IP. The router in my office is working fine, all the windows boxes can connect.
I've also noticed that when the computer is plugged in at work the notification icon for the networking indicates it is looking for a wireless connection (rather than the normal up/down arrows), even if wireless is deactivated
I can set a static IP in /etc/network/interfaces and everything works, so it seems to be a DHCP problem?
I have a connection an its slow in both ff and chrome...however i can ping sites and get the same response time as my xp machine which runs fast. usually around the 40ms mark with no lost packets.
Also when i do installs eg. of chrome etc, i was getting up to 500kB/s download. I just cant seem to replicate this browsing, its loading up at a dial up pace. The last time I had an issue like this was setting up my mums work laptop on our home network where the work had specific proxy settings, so we turn the off and it works fine.
I do not know how to tinker this
INFO:::: broadcom 4306 chip have tried ndiswrapper and bcmxx fwcutter
I have an Acer Aspire One that worked fine with version 9.* of Ubuntu, then I upgraded to v10.1. Now Thunderbird, Evolution, and Firefox (Namoroku?) can't connect, either wirelessly or by Ethernet cable, to my ISP. I get error messages like "connection timed out" or "cannot find {link}". I can PING my ISP from Terminal, though, and I have the machine set up for dual boot with Windows 7 and Firefox works fine under Windows.
I have no idea what to look for or where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a strange problem for internet. My clients (winxp - S2) can't get internet.Let me explain my scenerios. Fedora 10 with lan (eth0) having direct internet from dsl model, client (XP service pack 2) can use samba shares using dhcp (wlan0) installed in Fedora 10 box. client can ping my linux box.Now problem is: client (dosbox) can ping the google ip address (i.e ping 74.125.39.106) but can't use 'ping www.google.com'. That means ping with ip works for internet from my client. My linux box can. I can use internet from FC10 but can't use iexplorer from my client to have internet. I have enable ipmasquarding in Firewall and dhcpd is running on wlan0 for dynamic ip address of my clients. Can someone suggest me what kind of problem having I? What should i do to success iexplorer for internet? what possibly am i missing?
Background: In attempting to move from XP to linux, I have a F14 live USB stick -- can boot Dell M6400, see the internal drive and USB sticks. Wired ethernet network is seen only if ethernet cable is plugged in before booting. Then, I can ping sites by name (yahoo.com, google.com) -- however, FireFox does not load any web-page over the internet -- it does not put up an error message either, it just keeps waiting (it is in on-line mode).Info on the system

I'm having a strange problem with my Fedora 11 install under VMWare Server. I can look up hosts in nslookup, host, and I can ping servers using their names, but when I use curl, firefox, or yum, it says it can't resolve the host name.
I am running Ubuntu, and I was wondering if there are any settings that I can change in order to remove to make it so that users of the computer cannot delete the history in Firefox without a password. I am even willing to switch to another Internet browser if necessary.
I know this is not a win-doze forum but i always ask my questions here so here goes.I am having what appears to be a DNS problem on a friends laptop. He is running windows XP. I CAN connect to networks and even ping websites but i CANNOT browse in Internet Explorer or FIrefox.
I can ping my router, i can ping google and i can ping the ip address you get in the ubuntu help.If i type 192.168.1.1 i can get my router control panel/i just cant connect to the web,
I log on and Network Manager shows no wireless adapter.
I go to System > Administration > Network:
There are two entries in the Devices tab: Wireless and Ethernet
As soon as I double click the Wireless device and the configuration pops up, the device starts working (no changes to the settings are made)
I have the following set to ON: - Controlled by Network Manager - Activate device when computer starts - Allow all users to enable and disable this device
I am working behind a http proxy (172.30.x.x:3128). I have configured it in my terminal. All the applications such as wget, lynx firefox etc. are working correctly. However all dns utilities like nslookup, host and even ping too are not working.Following is output of host command:
Code: root@ding:~# host google.com ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached Output of host -T:
[Code]....
To connect to net I have to first run dhclient3(learnt from this forum!).It gives me my ip but where is dns address sent I don't have and idea.

eth1 (13.3.3.2) is connected to router port 2/0 (13.3.3.1). I am trying to ping from eth1 to router or vice versa. None of them is not working. Don't know what is problem. [root@perseus anvltest]# ping 13.3.3.1 PING 13.3.3.1 (13.3.3.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
3 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 2000ms
I am trying to get an arp packet from my wireless wifi router (access point), to which I am not connected. I simply tried ping 192.168.0.1, but the answer was connect: network is unreachable. What can I do about that?
When browsing at the main page of [URL] firefox uses 100% of my CPU capacity. I have the flashblock addon installed, which allows me to control whether embedded flash applications are run or not, so it is not due to flash.
On my computer, I'm using 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 and Firefox 3.6.8. Firefox is so s...l...o...w..... It's slow loading and it's slow browsing. Konqueror takes 1, maybe 2 seconds to load, and another second to load the home page. Firefox takes a good 30 seconds to load. The only message I get when loading from a terminal is about not using a shared database. I don't hear the disk churning like it would with a fragmented disk.
I can't believe everyone is having this response, the hue and cry would be enormous! Anything to try? Should I try loading another browser? I tried Opera on 11.2 and didn't really like it, had problems with a lot of content. What about Sea Monkey (Gad, I HATE words with monkey in them!) Konqueror won't show a lot of videos and I have problems using the back and forward buttons. I'll wait for fixes but in the meantime.
I'm not sure why, but over the last couple of days when I browse the web with my Centos 5.3 machine running firefox 3.0.5, it takes a very long time to load web pages. Loading the app itself is pretty quick, and I have not issues with system resources (it's an HP Proliant ML115 server, with dual opteron processors & 3Gb RAM). Looking at CPU & disk useage there's nothing out of the ordinary:
I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.
When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.
If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.
I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.
I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.
I have this annoying problem since day one.I am testing out Red Hat RHEL5, everything is fine except DNS look up.If I ping www.google.com, it doesn't work, ping ip address it all works;if I bring up browser, put www.google.com it doesn't work, can't find the name, however, simply put ip address there it works. My DNS seeting seems ok, and the DNS works from Windows box.
