Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To Networks And Even Ping Websites But CANNOT Browse In Internet Explorer Or Firefox?
Jan 21, 2010
I know this is not a win-doze forum but i always ask my questions here so here goes.I am having what appears to be a DNS problem on a friends laptop. He is running windows XP. I CAN connect to networks and even ping websites but i CANNOT browse in Internet Explorer or FIrefox.
Background: In attempting to move from XP to linux, I have a F14 live USB stick -- can boot Dell M6400, see the internal drive and USB sticks. Wired ethernet network is seen only if ethernet cable is plugged in before booting. Then, I can ping sites by name (yahoo.com, google.com) -- however, FireFox does not load any web-page over the internet -- it does not put up an error message either, it just keeps waiting (it is in on-line mode).Info on the system
uname -a Code: Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Oct 18 23:57:44 UTC 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux [code]...
I'm using FC10 on my box at work. It is behind an anthenticated proxy for internet connection. In Gnome, I configured the Network Proxy through the GUI, as my browsers too.
So I can browse internet pages, install packages thru Add/Remove Software GUI, but I cant do it in the command line, using yum install, for example. Then trying to figure it out, I saw that it cant reach the package mirrors. It isnt a DNS problem, I set the /etc/resolv.conf correctly, as the host command works correclty. I can ping the local pcs on the network too. Firewall is disabled. Below some simple tests:
[rtovo@davinci ~]$ ping mirrors.fedoraproject.org connect: Network is unreachable [rtovo@davinci ~]$ host mirrors.fedoraproject.org mirrors.fedoraproject.org is an alias for wildcard.fedoraproject.org.
I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.10 on a HP DV2500 laptop. Everything installed as expected but I am having some wireless issues I was hoping somebody could assist me with. I am able to connect to my network via wireless with no issues. However, when I attempt to browse the internet it will not connect to any pages. Obviously when I connect it via CAT 5 all works as expected. Any ideas on how to solve my wireless issues?
1) I connect to the internet on a wireless router from my isp.
2) I use an older router for my media server (pc) to my ps3. The router given to me from my isp is the only one I can use to connect to the internet, yet it has the worst UPnP support (ie: none).
So with this current setup, I have to disconnect from the the wired network to be able to access the internet. So how can I access the internet while still connected to the wired network?
In all but one place my HP Pavilion laptop running Fedora 14 will work flawlessly to use the Internet for e-mail, ftp, http, etc. In one network there is a wireless router - Cisco/Linksys E3000 - that allows every computer to use the Internet normally for wireless or for wired connections, every computer but mine. If I use Google's Chrome I can access the Internet. I can ping any web site too, but the moment I try to access anything with Firefox 3.6.17 there is a long delay and the standard error page appears. Weather or not I use a wired connection is apparently irrelevant. The Windows 7 computers in the same network are free of this curious problem. Strangely I have noted a problem like this, possibly the same problem, with another network at a coffee shop and they both share the misfortune of using AT&T, which is proud to not support Linux ... for customers of course (it's good enough for themselves I'm sure)
I have an Acer Aspire One that worked fine with version 9.* of Ubuntu, then I upgraded to v10.1. Now Thunderbird, Evolution, and Firefox (Namoroku?) can't connect, either wirelessly or by Ethernet cable, to my ISP. I get error messages like "connection timed out" or "cannot find {link}". I can PING my ISP from Terminal, though, and I have the machine set up for dual boot with Windows 7 and Firefox works fine under Windows.
I have no idea what to look for or where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I know Windows forward and backward but I am so new to linux it's just wrong. I just installed fedora (like 1hr ago) on and old toshiba laptop with a WiFi PC card. Everything seems to work fine except. My Networks connects to my home Wifi network but it will not connect to internet. When it connects the IP address isn't even close to being in the same range as my other laptops and PCs. Like I said I'm new to linux but I'm wanting to learn. Any fixes for this issue? Which linus book is the best one to read for a beginner? Other then not connecting to internet I have no complaints.
I've only been using linux for a few days so I don't know all the tricks. I'm pretty savy configuring windows networks however. My adapter is (according to windows) a: CNet PRO200WL PCI fast ethernet adapterLinux says it is a: 21x4x DEC-tulip compatible 10/100 EthernetI do seem to be getting an ip address from the DHCP router, but I cannout ping any other ips or connect to the internet.I've tried a bunch of different options, switching things back and forth, but it still doesn't work, and honestly i don't even know what some of the options mean.
ALSO, if this helps: paladin:~ # ifconfig eth0 Eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:08:A1:03:3C:99
I have 2 10.04 computers and one win 7 and one vista computer: The win computers can see each other and the ubuntu computers, but the ubuntu computers cannot see each other or the win machines. The ubuntu computers connect to the internet fine and can ping each other. I cannot find settings to correct.
recently I got new wireless card, att usb Quicksilver(based/produce by Option?), for att.Regular gnome network manager freezes the computer when I am plugging it it therefore I installed the one from wicd.net.Also, I am using HSOConnect (to connect by to G3 network), and sometimes I connect to regular wireless g connection through router.
Under both cases I can ping the website by IP and can access the website by ip (ex. google) but can not ping or browse by name.As a side note... I can use and access Skype fine under g3 network and normal wireless.I tried browsing and finding other solutions in past few days but ended up breaking everything and reinstalling to get back to the point I am at now.I am working on the road, so not being to broswse is rather crippling to me.... also I can access internet normally only from home from different computer now.
In debian lenney I use the dnsmasq as dns resolver, and wvdial to connect to isp, the wvdial connect to the isp but cannot browse the internet with firefox, these are what is done:
Dec 28 21:19:53 salman pppd[8398]: pppd 2.4.4 started by root, uid 0 Dec 28 21:19:53 salman pppd[8398]: Using interface ppp0 Dec 28 21:19:53 salman pppd[8398]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttySHSF0 Dec 28 21:19:54 salman pppd[8398]: PAP authentication succeeded Dec 28 21:19:54 salman kernel: [ 2655.428889] PPP BSD Compression module registered Dec 28 21:19:54 salman kernel: [ 2655.500676] PPP Deflate Compression module registered .....
Same pc with same isp, modem and dnsmasq working in fedora 12 as I am posting from from fedora 12.
When the dsl modem connected to net I cant browse pages through my fedora9 in my desktop. I never had the same prob before I used it a hour ago now it is not working. The connection established symbol comes and the ip addresses are assigned by dhcp and the connection is eth0 and I can use the same in windows xp so the router and internet connection have no prob. I cant ping through fedora and I can ping my own IP address, I can access my router only the browsing have problem my browser is firefox.
I have installed windows server 2003 on my computer, and i can surf the internet with my gui-based web browsers.
I have also installed vmware workstation 6.5 on the same computer, and successfully installed fedora 12 in vmware, with network is bridged.
I can successfully ping websites at the command line, e.g., ping [url], it did get replies with time and ttl, but i can't open the websites with firefox or conquerer browsers.
I have a small Dell PowerEdge 1650 server with Fedora 12 loaded. We can access the internet, (Google, our home page, Etc.) but can not ping any local or outside IP addressed. Our internal computers can ping each other but not the server. No, it is not the server firewall because we also disabled it and still the same results.
In fedora, to use browse mode, you have to right click on a folder and choose browse. How can I make that the default option, like in Ubuntu if that rings a bell on what I am talking about. Every time I double click a folder I would like browse mode.
In my Fedora13 machine, while in mobile broadband, i can ping and skype outside, but cannot browse/yum etc. Few output that may be of relevence are here:
$ netstat -s IP: 149468 total packets received 6 with invalid headers 16174 with invalid addresses 0 forwarded 0 incoming packets discarded 118821 incoming packets delivered 101331 requests sent out 124 outgoing packets dropped 866 dropped because of missing route .....

I have just installed OpenSuse in a brand new desktop. I have got no problem at the installation process. Somehow, I still could not get my firefox to browse internet.I set the network configuration by applying the IP Address, Subnetmask, Standard Gateway etc. I can ping, both internal network and external network. So, I assume, there is no problem exist in relay and accept data.Still, I can not browse using firefox.I could, indeed, open the website google.com, by typing http://74.125.43.147, but can not proceed if I typed
if config = eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:24:1D:C438 inet addr:192.168.1.57 Bcast:192.168.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0
Cannot connect to internet via Firefox or Midori on my Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with a Netgear wireless card. However, I can update via yum, I can ping google from the CLI, I can ssh to my desktop, I can point a browser to find my router which /etc/resolv.conf points to, but can't get a browser to resolve hostname. I'm posting from a different machine (desktop), here is my /etc/resolv.conf:
