I have recently built a HTPC with a GA-G41m Combo and it has worked well with Ubuntu 10.04, however last week some time the on board network stopped working. I have tried different routers and different cables, but the network light wont come on. What Can I doo?
View 5 RepliesI've just set up a PC with CentOS 5.3 runing on near identical hardware to an existing 5.2 machine. Motherboard is Asus M2A-VM which I discover by chance generally works very well with CentOS. Ethernet is on board Nvidia.The older machine just did run gigabit speed without any intervention at all, rather to my surprise. The newer machine insists on running at 100 Mbit which is annoying as it is connected to a NAS through a gigabit dumb switch.
The obvious difference between the two is that ethtool on the older machine says that supported ports are TP, and so the port is TP. Whereas the newer machine says that supported ports are TP or MII and insists on running MII. I cannot change this with ethtool -s eth0 port tp. Perhaps not too surprisingly, mii-tool says that the supported speeds range up to 100 Mbit.

Checked cable/network with 386Box running Ubuntu 8.04 all OK. Could not get Realtek 8168 on mother board to work on Gigabyte H55M-S2H motherboard. I tried to install r8168 driver but no luck ... so I bought another Linux compatible card which turned out to be a RTL8139c (eth1) and the driver I am using on this is card is 8139too.

My preference would be to get the motherboard ethernet working but perhaps the card may be easier to get working. Anyway after searching the net for ideas and trying different things I've just about given up. I have reinstalled Ubuntu today so eth0 is back to using the r8169 driver. I'm no expert so my attempts at following other recipies have so far failed. From what I have read the 8139too driver should have worked with the RTL8139C chip so I have run out of ideas. I must be doing something wrong.
I have installed CentOS. I have two ethernet card (one onboard and one PCI). I am able to set ip for realtek ethernet card and my atheros(on board) is not shown in network ifconfig shows only one ethernet card (PCI) hen i gave the command lspci i got the following output

The hardware manufacturer assures me the device is hw:0,0 so I set device to:

So I'm presuming the advice that I use hw:0,0 must be wrong? So I need to find a way of working out what the device id is. I've tried default, no effect, then tried the command asoundconf list, which returns an error. I'm using a min linux build on an embedded system (busybox) so is there a way to find my sound device.
I have a Gigabyte mainbord with an Intel IHC9 sound chip. When I configure it via YAST the test-sound plays fine, and when I issue:
sudo speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
some friendly voice starts speaking as well.
But:
speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
doesn't bring about anything sound-like.

Doing a fresh F12 install on a Dell Vostro 430. Machine needs to have 2 Network adapters for our setup.The install seems to go just fine but the on board network adapter doesn't appear to get detected/configured. If I look in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts all I find is ifcfg-eth0 and ifcfg-lo. Looking carefully at ifcfg-eth0 I see it's the second card that I've put in the machine.As a test I removed the second network card and did another fresh install of F12. This time in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts all I have is ifcfg-lo. When I go to system>Administration>Network Device Control I see no network devices displayed.
Is this an issue others have seen with F12 or is it possible my on board network adapter has an issue?BTW I did check the BIOS to be sure that Onboard Lan was enabled and it is.output from "lspci -k " with both cards installed on machine (I only listed Ethernet controllers)
Currently my office use a Cisco Firewall which will only allow the ANYCONNECT utility to do the vpn connection. I found a Linux utility (OpenConnect) which will do the same thing, but allow me more flexibility with my networking needs.What I ultimately would like to have is to have a switch that I can connect any network device into it and be connected to the office. IE (my IP Work Phone and Computer) Currently I have is a computer with fedora 13 and two network cards eth0 (home network - connected to a router) and eth1 which I would like to connect a switch to. OpenConnect communicates fine and I can see the work network from the Fedora machine. It creates a vpn0 tun/tap device and I don't know how to pass communication to/from the eth1 device.
Do I try to iptables the ports for the phone and services I need on the computer? Or do I build bridge; and If I do what am I bridging. I have tried making a bridge from eth1 to vpn0 which reply's with unsupported device or something like that.Unfortunately my network skills are bit limited and my office says "it can't be done". Their solution is for me to buy a ASA5505 (or something device) and have a static IP. I would have to make it work as my router and even then it will only DHCP 10 ip addresses; which will cause a shortage of IP addresses in the house.
I have installed slacware 13 on an intel server, but the IP add that i have assigned does not work. I used ifconfig to check the ip but it shows me 127.0.0.1. I have run netconfig with the ip address i need and restart the machine, but it goes back to 127.0.0.1
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new nettop and installed Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop. Unfortunately the on-board wlan is kind of crap so I bought a USB Wireless stick and since that stick has a pretty recent chipset ndis was needed to get the USB stick to work as wlan1.
The issue is I want to disable the on-board wlan (wlan0). The BIOS does not offer that option so it needs to be done in the OS I guess. My question is what is the best way of doing so? I've read something about blacklisting or editing 10-wlan.rules but I am unsure what the best place is and what to put there.

I have an issue with my on-board wireless card (powers down after about 5 minutes) so I'm stuck with a USB card. I don't use the on-board card and it causes the system to intermittently hang if it's powered on (once I run ifconfig wlan0 down, the system runs fine). Is there a way to power down the interface (or better yet prevent it from powering on) at boot?

- I have a embedded development board TS7200 .
- It has USB and Ethernet Port.
- I am able to get port Linux on it and run program to communicate between devices and a computer using socket programming and Ethernet.
I need help in deciding how to get WIFI connectivity to the board. I guess it would mostly be using WIFI dongle? Any suggestion for a WIFI dongle?How should I get it working? Where should I look for proper reading material? I am am planning to do some basic program practice using WIFI on my laptop. How can I do that ?
I'm running an ubuntu maverick server, and I'm having a slight problem with networking. I've only got one ethernet line running into my room, and I've got loads of computers. The server has 2 ethernet ports, one integrated into the motherboard, one on a PCI card that I took from my old server. The on board ethernet never worked on my old server- but I only tried it out post-install, it was hooked up to the card during install (For the record, networking on linux has *never* worked for me if I installed then plugged in the networking stuff after the fact). So I just used the card instead. Transferred the hard drive into a new machine, and lo and behold, it would only work after I transferred in the card from the old one. What I wanted to set up is a basic NAT system, where the network connection is routed through from my server to my main desktop- but when I run ifconfig, my card is not detected, just lo and eth0. How can I fix this?

The card is a WLI-MPCI-G54 and is using Broadcom BCM4306 chip. I've installed Debian on the system.My goal is to make a wireless access point by using hostapd authentication service. I thought it might be a good idea to verify that the wlan-card is working properly first, but it can't seem to detect my local wlan.

I just got a new Linksys router as well and when I installed Ubuntu wireless networking worked fine during the install and after but... when I update that wireless card thats working fine for years and works fine before the update half the time won't see my wireless network and if it does it won't accept my key the routers fine physically the cards fine Any ideas?

But wired internet did work all the time but then i had to reset our router because of some problems and now it doesn't work anymore! But the strange thing is, if i put the cable on my own laptop with windows on it, then it works as normal.
So i guess its some kind of DNS problem, but i'm very new with ubuntu and also not so good with computers. Our network is simple just an modem connected to an router: Sitecome WL-341.
I'm still fairly new to Linux so please forgive me if my description of my problem leaves out important information. My problem is centered around using a AT91SAM9G45 development board (DB)on Fedora 10. I have directions on how to setup on my host machine a DHCP server to connect to the development board. I have installed an additional network card (eth1) that will be used exclusively to communicate with my DB.
The DB has been setup with an ethaddr=12:34:56:78:9a:bc and an ipaddr=192.168.251.191.

I have an ubuntu 8.04 dedicated server running openssh which I am having problems with.
The server is based in England yet I am currently working from Thailand. Slow speeds and timeouts I am used to but it is now over 24hr since I have managed to SSH the server (from here).
I just tried remote desktop on my PC back in the UK and this connected straight away through both SSH and SCP.
Thinking that it may be the IP being blocked from my works network I switched off wifi on my phone and tried to connect over the data network a few times with no luck.
Another strange problem is that when we got the server it was locked into a chroot jail which SSH(22) always leads into. After accessing SSH on port 22 I have to run a break script to gain root access. The sshd_config file says that the server is listening on port 57 yet I have never been able to access this.

I installed Ubuntu10.04, It cannot driver Wired network and wireless. Later I installed linuxMint9, wireless is ok, but wired network doesn't work. I am sure the lan cable is ok. It works in Windows.

When I'm connected to any network (be it wired or wireless) my Apache (and Wordpress, of course) works just fine. But as soon as I go offline, I can't access the web server neither through browser nor by telneting to the 80th port. I can't connect to any wireless network although my drivers seems to be working fine. I think it's somehow related to "Network connections" manager.

My current wired network (eth0) works fine I can ping google.com or browse Internet.
what is the command to restart the network services? ive forgotten i think it uses -hup switch though. about 1 in 20 boots on my desktop ubuntu system results in the system insisting its no longer on a network yet has a fully functioning network card. a reboot always fixes the issue but that doesnt seem like a long term solution to me. If I ping a neighbouring system I get nothing. (sent packet count increases in ifconfig) If I ping from a neighbouring system back to my desktop I get nothing (no change in packet count) I can bring down and back up the network interface with no results. A sniffer shows the system definitely isnt sending anything out Everything worked previous boot and will work again after a reboot.
