View 2 RepliesHeres the set up I have: one eeepc running ubuntu netbook. with a usb wifi dongle, this is connected to a parabolic antenna i made out of pizza boxes and tin foil. One fujitsu laptop running ubuntu 10.10. the eee connects to the internet via the dongle. then the laptop connects to the eee. I set this up by using network manager. I created a new wirless connection and called it "UbuntuAdhoc". The on-board card connected to this without issue and the laptop was able to connect to the new wireless broadcast by the eees on-board card.
This worked perfectly untill I rebooted the eee. Now the eee is unable to conect to the internet if the on-board caard is conected to "ubuntuadhoc". also the dongle now wants to conect to "ubuntuadhock" too.

I'm trying to configure my machine to allow remote desktop connections from outside my home network so i can connect at school, work etc. However, when setting up my remote desktop it says "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address localhost." (see attached screenshot) My other linux machine has the same problem, but provides the IP address, is there something i'm missing?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a friends computer when Windows died on it, and though she has had relatively few problems with it, she still occasionally has problems that are really hard to impossible to fix over the phone. She is also not very knowledgeable with computers, so I was trying to guide her through setting up so I could connect to her remotely and try to figure things out, but I cannot get it to work.
I personally don't use Ubuntu on my computer, I use openSUSE and KDE so that does add to the problem, though I have used Ubuntu and Gnome a lot in the past.
I had her go to remote desktop settings and allow connections from other computers and allow other users to control the desktop, and at first I had her require confirmation and a password but it didn't work without it either. When I try to connect, it just hangs for a while then times out. I tried using KRDC and just VNC in the terminal with the same result.
There should be nothing on my side preventing a connection, but I am not positive. I am not very familiar with remote desktop outside of a LAN either. I am just trying to connect using her IP address, I don't know if there is anything else I need to include. Is there maybe some other setting that needs to be changed or maybe her DSL modem/router is blocking me though I don't know why it would, especially since P2P programs work fine.
I install one server in my system(linux 5.0) and accessing that server through the 127.0.0.1 private ip address(lo). While i connect to a remote server for validating registry it gives me the error and unable to connect to remote server. here some of the files i give here in below to know my system network configuration

is there any apps compatible with remote desktop? So my xubuntu system can connect to my windows system using the existing set up for remote desktop... or do I need to install a new client/server or thing on both systems? I do not mind doing that if you can recommend a good client/server but would prefer to just connect to the existing remote desktop if possible
View 9 Replies View RelatedI hope someone can help me as I am new to Linux and Ubuntu. I am running Ubuntu 11.04 and am trying to get VPN working properly with the pptp protocol. It is connecting but I cant seem to view folders or start a RDP session. I have tried this out with a Windows and a Linux machine and both work. The Linux machine was running Mint 10, in the vpn configuration I had set the gateway, user and pass, then in advanced mschap and mschapv2 were selected as well as mppe, allow bsd, allow deflate, and use tcp header. These settings work fine with Mint but its not working for me using Ubuntu. I did try to ping, sometimes it works sometimes it wont.

I did a clean install of the latest version of Ubuntu. For some reason, there are still internet-issues. When I tried out the following command
Code:
telnet
open ftp.microsoft.com 21
I got
Code:
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out
Also, during install of the new ubuntu, it was unable to reach the repos for downloading. Odd thing is that I can go online, and that when I type 'ftp.microsoft.com' in my browser, it displays the file-hierarchy.
I am running CentOS 5.1 on VMware on Win 7 On CentOS I added Bridged network adapter and the server is connected to internet without any problems, but when I telnet any server on port 25 I get connection timeout.
Code:

Trying 98.137.54.237...
telnet: connect to address 98.137.54.237: Connection timed out
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out
I stopped all servers, iptables and sendmail on the linux server and the firewalls on the win 7 but still getting the same error! I added new network adapter ( host-only ) and tried to telnet the win machine from vmware Linux but I got connection refused
Code:
telnet 192.168.71.1 25

When i am trying to telnet to a machine connected in our LAN ..
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
What's the reason for this? how do i establish a connection? I am using ubuntu 10.04.
telnet localhost the output is...
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
I don't understand what is the problem. Its not configured properly how do i configure it?
I have a computer that i set up for a friend, and tried to ssh into it for her to update it and add do maintenance for her, so that she doesn't get aggravated with trying to do it herself, but ssh hangs and times out. The firewall is set to allow ssh, and eth* is set as trusted by the firewall, and i have the correct ip, and the ssh service is running.
I can connect to my home computer from hers, which is setup the same way (in this regard), but not vice versa. She has no router; she is directly connected to the DSL modem.
Here's the situation: My Dell Latitude D830 video chip failed. Dell has replaced the system board under warranty. The following problems now exist:
1. eth0 has become eth1. The system failed to see the current ethernet as the only ethernet.
2. wlan0 has become wlan1. The same has occurred.
3. The pulse audio applet (I know, not officially supported) will not start up properly at boot complaining about something missing or wrong in the configuration. I suspect the hardware for sound is also not recognized as the previous.
4. Pidgin and Firefox are both having issues with anything SSL and digital certificates. In pidgin, I can no longer log into AIM. With Firefox, I had to accept a bunch of new SSL certificates. (Did that once for any https web site I have accessed for the first time since the system board change)
I would seriously like to understand how the hardware detection situation affects all of this. I was able to tweak some configuration files to get eth0 back to normal operation by manually changing the MAC address. But that isn't working for wlan0/wlan1 as I attempted to make corrections using the GUI and that didn't work out too well.
Where would I find the central point of identifying hardware devices and device names? And I suspect the encryption cert issues are related to the change in hardware as well which makes me wonder a few things. What happens when a non-laptop user changes a network card? Is Fedora married too closely to the hardware? What happens if we were to try to "ghost" a Fedora installation?
I'm trying to connect with my server via telnet, but when i sent the command (telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Port) doesn't works and shows then follow error: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused, It happens with any port. Is strange but my telnet services works (telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx), In addition, i tried with firewall enabled and disabled and the problem still happens. My centOS run on virtualbox.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy friend has a HP Pavilion dv2699ea (dv2500 series - somehow *shrugs*) that has stopped working. It's a Core2Duo laptop with a Nvidia GPU. The unit is no longer under warranty. Problems first started a few days ago with the laptop showing corrupted graphics in Windows and BSOD'ing after a few minutes of use. I tried booting to an Ubuntu LiveCD which worked for a while before succuming and crashing as well. The freezing/graphics corruption/BSODing does seem somewhat heat related (CPU runs at ~95'c under load) however I believe that if it is heat related, then it's already damaged components inside.
Now the system has corrupted graphics on bootup[1], including booting Ubuntu[2], and neither operating systems will boot at all (Windows can sometimes get logged in before showing a black screen and becoming unresponsive. Ubuntu just looks like [3] after X starts). (See comment below for links.)
The fact the problem occurs both under Linux and Windows says to me this is not a driver issue. I have run Memtest which passed fine and none of this seems HDD related as I managed to get ~30GB of data off the system before it finally gave up the ghost.
She has been using it repeatedly without giving it adequate ventilation for years (i.e. on the bed, or on a pillow), so it's my opinion that the system board has probably warped over years of cooling/heating and that's causing this current problem. If that is the case, then I can buy a replacement system board and fit it myself, saving about £200 over the cost of an out-of-warranty HP repair. Of course, I don't want to make her spend £100 on a replacement part for it to be the wrong thing, hence asking for a second opinion here!
Hopefully I've covered all the bases here. I'm a former IT support guy myself, so I've tried all the dumb stuff (driver updates, examining memory dumps from BSODs [one 'unrecoverable hardware error', three relating to the graphics card], etc).
I'm looking for doing AOE (Ata over ethernet) inexpensively with single board computers, like Routerboard stuff, but is there anything with sata plugs. Hopefully I can get each board for hopefully around $50, but a little more would be ok. Non-x86 is fine, Debian is as good as Ubuntu.
