Ubuntu Networking :: Normally Connect Via 2G Dongle With Win Software?
Nov 10, 2010
At the moment I am in the UK using broadband but in a week I will be flying back to India, where I normally connect with a 2G dongle. This comes with its own software that installs when plugged in for the first time and uses an Airtel sim card. Of course this is in Windows so what's going to happen when I go back and try and connect using Ubuntu? I have done a cursory search and note that I should use the Network Connections service, but this relates to 3G, not 2G. Will that make a difference? Is it a suitable replacement for the normal software my dongle installs? I should add that using a Bluetooth phone with the sim card is not practical, I do need to use the dongle.

I'm trying to get my SMC EZ-Connect 802.11g 2862W-G wireless dongle to work on a friend's Lucid Lynx. I see there are some closed archived posts asking how to install this dongle, but since they don't appear to have been solved, here's a bump to see if I can resurrect the topic.
lsusb gives me Bus001 Device 003: ID 0707:ee06 Standard Microsystems Corp. EZ-Connect 802.11g on what I should do next?

I recently purchased a wireless USB dongle. It works great. I am looking to connect multiple computers to that USB dongle. I wanted to know if anyone out there knows if it is possible to link multiple USB cables together like a reverse splitter.

Im a Linux newbie and am running OpenSuse 11.3 (Gnome, 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop Kernel) and Ive an Asus N13 wifi dongle (linux compatible). I currently connect using my laptopÅ› internal wifi but I bought the dongle due to trouble with weak signal. It came with some sort of code that can be "compiled" but I havent got a clue how to do that (and I have been researching this matter for quite some time now). I then came across a post where someone with the same USB stick created and added only two small files to his filesystem and it worked...for him (maybe becasuse he was on a different Distro )
Ralink RT2870 USB Stick and created the two files mentioned in the post (network_drivers.rules and network_drivers.conf) and placed them in ETC... etc, etc! I rebooted the system but NetworkManager only lists it as "device not ready" ... So now back to square one.

a few weeks back I got an Indian Reliance 3g dongle. I installed usb-modeswitch, plugged in and it seemed to work brilliantly in Ubuntu 10.04.The problem was it was dropping the connection every ten minutes. The logs had the error message "Terminating on signal 15".I had to unplug the dongle and then it would connect again.x the problem, I tried installing first Sakis3G and then Betawine, both of which were reported by some users to haved. Sakis said "the device did not report GSM capabilities"d no good.Installing Betawine was apparently a bad idea, as after that the dongle ceased to work with Network Manager and Betawine itself was useless. Uninstalling Betawine and re-installing usb-modeswitch did no good. Now, when I plug in the dongle, the logs say:Quote:
Nov 9 17:52:31 lauri-laptop kernel: [28563.368241] usb 5-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
Nov 9 17:52:31 lauri-laptop kernel: [28563.530547] usb 5-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 desktop (latest updates) on an Acer Veriton 1000 desktop. I purchased a SMCWUSBS-N# Wireless USB Dongle recently and have been struggling to get it to work. NM-APPLET simply does not show any Wireless option at all. I have tried all the various posts / suggestions that I could Google and I am still nowhere.
Last night I manually loaded the RT3370sta driver. Now iwconfig does show the card on ra0. However, NM-APPLET still does not show any Wireless option at all.
Surprisingly "iwlist ra0 scan" command at the Terminal does show alll the available Wifi connections.

I've bought this Blumax USB WLAN adapter 9009 (ID 148f:2573 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2501/RT2573 Wireless Adapter). I was specifically happy to read in its specs that it supports Linux [URL].
However, it turned out that the co-packaged CD drive doesn't contain anything Linux-related, and the support page online has gzip package with many files I don't know what to do with [URL]. The online support swallowed my query and hasn't returned any answer.
So, now I am wondering what to do. I don't feel so competent as to be able to compile the drivers on my own, specifying several specific parameters. At least it doesn't compile with default params. how to move forward with this. Apart from returning the device, because I'm too far now from the place where I bought this.

We recently got a new mini PC which came pre-installed with Ubuntu 10.10, so far, so good. Today, we invested in a Vodafone broadband dongle (model number: K3570-Z/K3571-Z). I've installed the dongle on our old XP machine, with no problems, however, Ubuntu won't even recognise that it's plugged in. What am I doing wrong? We've had the new machine for 3 days, so I'm really new to all of it and haven't learnt how to use the command prompt yet, so I'm hoping someone has some advice for a complete beginner. I can't understand why it's not recognising that somethings plugged in, because from what I've found, you need usb_modeswitch in over for the dongle to be recognised as a modem.

I have a laptop with no bluetooth on it.So i bought a bluetooth dongle. It works flawlessly under windows but i am having a problem with it under Ubuntu (As well as other Linux distros). As soon as i plug the dongle i see a bluetooth icon in the Notification Area.
When i click on it and choose setup new device....its scans and shows all the bluetooth devices like my Nokia 5800 xpressmusic cell phone but when i try to pair it simply fails....
I have tried all the Pin codes available and even tried the custom pin option but still no success. By the way right now i am using Ubuntu 10.04..i have also tried it with other linux OS but still the problem remains....

I recently purchased an inexpensive bluetooth dongle for my laptop running lucid 64-bit. the device, however, doesn't seem to want to work in ubuntu. most functions (everything but turning the device OFF) fail, causing gui windows to hang, and i mostly receive messages relating to the device timing out.
Before you ask, it is not the device: the dongle works flawlessly in windows 7 after being autodetected and autoinstalled. i attempted to boot from the lucid cd, and the problem persisted.

I'm trying my to get my 3-year-old Dynex wireless dongle to work in Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit). Borrowing a similar linksys adapter from another computer running Ubuntu, I was able to install NDISGTK and transfer the same drivers that work in my 64-bit Windows 7 installation into my home folder.
Despite the fact that the dongle does not appear at all using lshw -C Network, ndiswrapper -l indicates that the driver is installed and the device is present. I think I found something interesting, though, when I tried this command:
Code:
jimmy@ubuntu:~$ dmesg | grep -e ndis -e wlan
[ 9.321323] ndiswrapper version 1.55 loaded (smp=yes, preempt=no)
[ 10.021542] ndiswrapper (import:242): unknown symbol: NDIS.SYS:'NdisMIndicateReceiveNetBufferLists'

I have a LAN (2 PC !) wire connected and I use a Huawei e182e to join the internet (If you have problem to install the Huawei on Linux, don't install drivers proposed on forums or don't try to unlock it. It's not necessary, simply install a kernel > 2.6.34 and it will install itself as a perfect plug and play). On the unconnected machine, the Internet is accessible normally from the broadband dongle, but the connection stops when I plug the LAN cable. It's normal since the PC cannot use both network connections simultaneously without a previous configuration, and the question is precisely there !
Bridging could be a solution but mobile broadband uses ppp protocol that is not on the same layer as wired LAN. brctl refuses to add the key into the bridge configuration. Vtun seems a better approach since it works more independently from the protocols, but it must be installed on both sides and the broadband dongles does not accept software installation in it. Documentation from Huawei is quite inexistent. Actually the story could be the same for a computer connected to a wired LAN and using a wireless dongle, but here bridging is feasible (not tested by me) because they work on the same layer. I tried to deactivate LAN switching in the BIOS: no result static address with gateway pointing on the other device (I tried everything) no result. How to bridge a ppp dongle with a wired LAN?

I am just staring in the world of Linux (I want to stop eating what Microsoft leaves behind). I have this minor problem using Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat). The OS had detected my CNET Wireless-G USB Dongle (CWD-854). I have a Linksys Wireless Router (WRT-120N). I see in the top right corner of the OS the wireless icon. When I click on it, it displays the SSID of my wireless. When I click on it, it ask me for my wireless password. It start to try to connect to my wireless router, but it always end up disconnecting.

I currently have a computer sitting underneath a router/switch on a Local Area Network that I want to connect to the Internet using a 3G USB dongle modem. If I am connected to the ethernet and then enable the modem connection, only the ethernet LAN side works. If I enable the modem and then enable a (disabled) ethernet connection, only the ethernet LAN side works. If I keep the ethernet disabled and connect using the modem, I can get out onto the Internet, but obviously not the LAN. I need to be able to do both.
