I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Inspiron 6000 but when I connect the ethernet cable the computer detects that the cable was connected but doesnt connect to the internet.

I am running Natty on a Dell Inspiron 6000 under dual boot. Now Ubuntu refuses to load. GRUB goes along to a point where the final message in both regular and recovery modes is 81.8921591 atal: SRST failed (errno=-16). Is there any way I can recover short of having a professional rescue my data from the hard disk and totally redoing the install. I have had this problem in previous versions but never fatally before. My computer works fine under Windows.

I do some android development so through that I have learned a little bit about linux but only the basic command prompt commands and the basics of how linux works and such.Anyways, I was looking around on the forum and on other forums and I couldn't find any helpful information about how to set up wireless connections (such as wifi) on debian. When I installed debian on my computer it asked me for the ipw2200 files and I didn't have them at the time but now I have the latest framework files for that, I don't really know how to install them and after I install them I don't know how to turn on my wireless connections from there.
I am really sorry if someone already made a post on this subject and I am just too clutzy to find it, if that's the case please just post the link to that thread for me cause I'm dumb as crap.So basically the main problem I am trying to fix right now is that I cannot get my internet to work on my old dell inspiron 6000 laptop which I am trying to get to run debian.
I just got my internet working through the wireless card with some help. However, my downloading speeds are beyond extremely slow. While I type on this computer, I am downloading things @ ~500-700kb/s, but when I try to download the package updates etc for my Ubuntu 9.10 laptop, It downloads @ ~ 4k b/s- which is UNBEARABLY slow, putting me at 14h left to complete a 200 mb update. View 8 Replies View RelatedIn the last week or 2 I've noticed something odd with the audio - but as I don't use the it very much and also accept all the ongoing updates from Fedora. Anyway symptoms are (using ALSA):
1. Volume control button on the laptop - when decreasing to less than ~50% the sound goes to zero.
2. Watching flash movies (in Firefox 3.5.1, Adobe 10 plug-in) (e.g. BBC, .....): they play fine for a few seconds then go choppy (audio and video) then video recovers but sound is lost (and the laptop volume control does not work at all after that).
3. Finding similar problems on replay of audio with kplayer and vlc on music files (ogg) that previously worked fine.
I've seen the pulseaudio and vlc fix thread but I don't use pulseaudio in kplayer, for example.
I have an Inspiron 1300 and have followed the "B43" instructions here:URl...Plus various other guides including the "one click b43 fix" but nothing useful happens. Wired access doesn't work either.

View 13 Replies View RelatedThe network icon and sound icon disappeared from the panel all of sudden one day while i was using ubuntu 9.10 and the network got disconnected. It used to work fine before when i was using ubuntu 9.04 and even after i updated to 9.10, but then that happened. I added the notification area back to the panel but now ubuntu cannot even find any wireless networks. When i connect a LAN cable to my laptop the internet works fine, but the wireless networks area in the network icon is grayed out and it doesn't show any wireless networks. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop and my network card is Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2915ABG [Calexico2] Network Connection (rev 05).

I have a dual boot with Windows 7, installed Ubunto with the help of Wubi installer. My laptop is Dell Inspiron 1545, with a 64 bit architecture.I have already done checking and enabling the wireless driver by going to System- Administration-Hardware Drivers and choosing Broadcom STA driver.

But as soon as I upgraded my Ubuntu to version 10.4 I realised it lost its wireless connection! I updated the system, the hardware driver for Broadcom STA wireless driver is activated and in use (according to Ubuntu Hardware drivers checker) but the fact is that I can only connect on the Internet if I hook the net cable on it, when I run the mouse over internet connection icon at the topright side of the monitor I see "no network" message and when I left click on it the option "wireless network" it's disabled and gray. View 2 Replies View Relatedi have to say that i'm not too familiar with Ubuntu... or Linux in general . I've installed it once, just to test it out but I didn't know how to use it so i just reinstalled windows. The other night, i was bored and decided i wanted to re-try Ubuntu and to my suprise, i found Wubi. I love ubuntu now and i made the decision to permanently switch over to ubuntu.
At first, my wireless wasn't working, but there was a quick fix. All i had to do was go to the Synaptic Package Manager, Reload, and search for "Broadcom." I installed the Broadcom STA Wireless driver and i was online within a couple of minutes. I then played around for a couple of hours before turning my laptop off. But, this morning, when i turned it back on...I coudlnt' connect. When i click the little connection icon in the top right, i see the message "Wireless is disabled".
There is a key on my computer that turns the wireless card on or off, and i have tried it. It doesn't work. I have reinstalled the broadcom driver and it doesn't work. I've rebooted...And it doesn't work. I don't know enough about linux to get a solution and every other solution i find on the internet doesn't work.
I have seen in other threads that you guys usually ask for a a couple of things from the user. ifconfig and the sudo lshw -C network so i have included them below. I also looked into the ubuntu help documentation and it told me to do the lspci command.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI finally got around to trying Ubuntu 10.04 on a "decommissioned" Dell Inspiron 8100 1.2Ghz P3 512MB RAM 40GB HD... and Ubuntu is absolutely AMAZING compared to Windows! I'm a Mac guy and honestly Ubuntu gives 90% of the Mac OS GUI and 0% of the "brain damage" of WinBLOWS...
The only thing missing in this laptop is WiFi which I want to do via one of the PCMCIA slots since the mini-PCI is a combo 10/100 network + v.90 modem card... and I need to keep the Ethernet port and fax modem capabilities.
What are the best "Plug n Play" PCMCIA WiFi cards for our "G" and "N" WPA2 ONLY Airport Express WiFi network? I'm new to Linux so I'd really like to avoid editing and replacing system files and drivers if possible to get a PCMCIA card working. I'd also like a card that works in WinXP Pro SP3 since this laptop is dual boot capable.

Things seem to install fine, but the wireless network remains unavailable (wireless network is disabled).
If someone can walk me through the trouble-shooting process, I tried the solution suggested in the sticky at the top too but no luck.
I'm on a Dell Inspiron 6400 which had been running Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) perfectly.Today I upgraded it to Natty and the wifi now refuses to work. Details: While no Additional Drivers were needed on 10.10, upon installing Natty it prompted me to install "Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver". Now when it's active I don't even have the option 'Enable Wireless' (only Enable Networking). If I disable STA the Enable Wireless option comes back, yet I can't actually search for wifi networks or connect to my saved one. The keyboard key to enable/disable wireless also does nothing.
I can take this laptop to somewhere with an ethernet connection for an afternoon if need be, but am currently stumped as to what to do. Obviously I know this machine can handle Wifi under Ubuntu - it's definitely a Natty problem.
I'm running on 11.04 on my Dell Inspiron 1764, and so far haven't been able to achieve internet access through either a direct wired connection or wireless.

I recently installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my Dell Inspiron Mini 10, and for some reason it isn't detecting any wireless networks. The wireless works perfectly fine when I boot to Windows XP on the netbook, but not when I'm using Ubuntu. I just installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, but I can't connected to the Internet with a wired or wireless connection. I have a BT Home Hub 2 wireless router. I can connect to the Internet when running Windows Vista, but not with Ubuntu.
I tried installing the Broadcom STA driver off of the live disk, which initially seemed to work. However, I still couldn't connect to the Internet and when I clicked on System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, there weren't any proprietary drivers to install or that had been installed. Also, when I reboot, Ubuntu tries to connect to my network automatically but always fails. That's what makes me think that a driver has been installed, but just isn't the right one or isn't working.
ok basically i have a new dell inspiron n5010 with a broadcom 4313 wifi card. it doesnt work with ubuntu studio 10.10. I have the drivers all installed and it works on ethernet with the broadcom STA proprietry driver. if i disable this driver the eth doesnt work. but the driver shows its working (screenshot-1).
There is no pop up or anything in the task bar for detected wifi. i open the network settings and it shows up with a wifi option but i have to go into properties and manually type in what i have "the_den_meribel". which didn't work. (screenshot-2).
i have tried the other driver broadcom-sta-common and that doesnt make it work either. screenshot-3. i did try to install the "lp-pphhy" or whatever it is (seacrh for firmware-b43 in synaptic).

I just installed the 64-bit Kubuntu 11.04 and i've been having some issues getting the wifi to work. At first I went to additional drivers and activated the STA driver and restarted. After restarting when I went into the network manager and any option for wireless was disabled.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card and a Marvell Yukon 88e8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller, and I cannot for the life of me get the internet to connect. I've tried both wired and wireless connection. I have a PPoE connection through a Verizon FIOS Actiontek router I believe, though the PPoE part may be wrong, I had one five years ago when I first got their internet so they may have changed it. Point is that the ethernet and internet won't work, and without a working ethernet I can't fetch the right drivers for anything.
I had also tried plain ubuntu 10.04 and couldn't get them to work then either. It said 'disconnected' at first, and then said 'device not ready' There is no hardware switch but there is a key toggle. It doesn't seem to matter what state the wireless was in before booting into Ubuntu Studio, so I'm lost as to where to even start. Even though the network manager isn't there like in regular ubuntu, I assume there will be a simple way to connect to the internet once the drivers are found, right?
I've seen issues and read about fixing them, but usually it uses an ethernet connection to fix the wifi connection and, being new to linux (<50 hours worth of experience lifetime), all I managed to do trying to fix it myself was screw up the installation to the point where the laptop couldn't access the home folder and I had to reinstall. Other than that, I am usually very good at following instructions, as long as they apply to my laptop's issue I guess
The only other issue is minor, I can't seem to control the USB mouse I have, but the trackpad works fine so it's no big deal, probably a matter of downloading the mouse driver once the internet works.
Currently I do have internet access via the same laptop while booting Windows 7 (I installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04 on a 10GB Partition with the idea of using an external HD for most data storage).
Oh and it is a 64-bit machine, the Studio version I installed is 32-bit.
This card has been the bane of my existence for a while. In the old days I could get it to work with Fedora using a generic video driver. A friend recommended OpenSuse because of my love for KDE.
The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn't work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell's site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.
