Debian Configuration :: Setting Up Dell Inspiron 6000 Wireless Connections
Jul 24, 2011
I am still a noob with linux and debian in particular. I do some android development so through that I have learned a little bit about linux but only the basic command prompt commands and the basics of how linux works and such.Anyways, I was looking around on the forum and on other forums and I couldn't find any helpful information about how to set up wireless connections (such as wifi) on debian. When I installed debian on my computer it asked me for the ipw2200 files and I didn't have them at the time but now I have the latest framework files for that, I don't really know how to install them and after I install them I don't know how to turn on my wireless connections from there.
I am really sorry if someone already made a post on this subject and I am just too clutzy to find it, if that's the case please just post the link to that thread for me cause I'm dumb as crap.So basically the main problem I am trying to fix right now is that I cannot get my internet to work on my old dell inspiron 6000 laptop which I am trying to get to run debian.

I have a problem with my laptop Dell Inspiron 1525 wireless on Jessie Cinnamon.
I have installed the b43 firmware and after that everything seemed working but just for a few seconds.
I have tried to reboot and after that I can't browse the internet just for a few seconds and after that Iceweasel loading and loading and nothing's happening.
I can't surf on the net just with cable but the wifi setup shows everything is okay 95% signal strength and connected.
Also tried reinstall the firmware and reboot and it's all the same after.
I can easily use my wifi with my smartphone too.

I am running Natty on a Dell Inspiron 6000 under dual boot. Now Ubuntu refuses to load. GRUB goes along to a point where the final message in both regular and recovery modes is 81.8921591 atal: SRST failed (errno=-16). Is there any way I can recover short of having a professional rescue my data from the hard disk and totally redoing the install. I have had this problem in previous versions but never fatally before. My computer works fine under Windows.

I just completed installing openSuse 11.1 I followed the detailed steps given in Getting Your Wireless to Work When I try to scan for available APs in the vicinity, I get the following error.
~> sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.
eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
Can someone guide me in configuring my wireless connection. Also, since I do not happen to have a wired connection, I am alternating between openSuse and windows everytime i need internet.

I have loaded the latest version of opensuse and I have everything working but I cannot connect to my wireless WPA2 network. I have downloaded the bcm43xx firmware using the method /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware I then restarted the network. The computer will now read the network card and will find networks but I cannot get it to connect at all. At first it would connect using ifup in yast but would disconnect after a few seconds. It would never connect through NM. I have a usb network card that works just fine. I am lost as to how to fix this problem.

I'm trying to bridge connections between a wired and a wireless connection in one of my computers. I was told it was impossible due to low-level limitations in the wireless subsystem, but apparently theres a way if you somehow forward packets from one port to the other. Is there a way I can achieve this?

In the last week or 2 I've noticed something odd with the audio - but as I don't use the it very much and also accept all the ongoing updates from Fedora. Anyway symptoms are (using ALSA):
1. Volume control button on the laptop - when decreasing to less than ~50% the sound goes to zero.
2. Watching flash movies (in Firefox 3.5.1, Adobe 10 plug-in) (e.g. BBC, .....): they play fine for a few seconds then go choppy (audio and video) then video recovers but sound is lost (and the laptop volume control does not work at all after that).
3. Finding similar problems on replay of audio with kplayer and vlc on music files (ogg) that previously worked fine.
I've seen the pulseaudio and vlc fix thread but I don't use pulseaudio in kplayer, for example.

I just want to report that I managed to get WLAN running on my Dell Mini 10 (Inspiron 1012) with OpenSuse 11.3 KDE.
This one contains a Broadcom 4312 WLAN card
Code:
lspci -vnn|grep Broadcom
07:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01)
0b:00.0 Multimedia controller [0480]: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:1615]
Subsystem: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:1615]
I just installed the broadcom-wl and broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop packages from the packman repository. Then there is a new entry in the bootmanager menu. Using that one, WLAN works fine.By the way: Can somebody explain me the difference between the broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop, broadcom-wl-kmp-default, broadcom-wl-kmp-pae, broadcom-wl-kmp-xen packages? I did not find any documentation about that.

The network icon and sound icon disappeared from the panel all of sudden one day while i was using ubuntu 9.10 and the network got disconnected. It used to work fine before when i was using ubuntu 9.04 and even after i updated to 9.10, but then that happened. I added the notification area back to the panel but now ubuntu cannot even find any wireless networks. When i connect a LAN cable to my laptop the internet works fine, but the wireless networks area in the network icon is grayed out and it doesn't show any wireless networks. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop and my network card is Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2915ABG [Calexico2] Network Connection (rev 05).

I am having trouble in getting the wireless up in Ubunto 10.04. Under Wireless Networks it says "wireless disabled". I have a dual boot with Windows 7, installed Ubunto with the help of Wubi installer. My laptop is Dell Inspiron 1545, with a 64 bit architecture.I have already done checking and enabling the wireless driver by going to System- Administration-Hardware Drivers and choosing Broadcom STA driver.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 with wireless card Dell wireless 1397 802.11g. It was working fine with Windows and Ubuntu 9.04 (I've got the two OS installed alongside). But as soon as I upgraded my Ubuntu to version 10.4 I realised it lost its wireless connection! I updated the system, the hardware driver for Broadcom STA wireless driver is activated and in use (according to Ubuntu Hardware drivers checker) but the fact is that I can only connect on the Internet if I hook the net cable on it, when I run the mouse over internet connection icon at the topright side of the monitor I see "no network" message and when I left click on it the option "wireless network" it's disabled and gray. How can I get my wireless card back working?

i have to say that i'm not too familiar with Ubuntu... or Linux in general . I've installed it once, just to test it out but I didn't know how to use it so i just reinstalled windows. The other night, i was bored and decided i wanted to re-try Ubuntu and to my suprise, i found Wubi. I love ubuntu now and i made the decision to permanently switch over to ubuntu.
At first, my wireless wasn't working, but there was a quick fix. All i had to do was go to the Synaptic Package Manager, Reload, and search for "Broadcom." I installed the Broadcom STA Wireless driver and i was online within a couple of minutes. I then played around for a couple of hours before turning my laptop off. But, this morning, when i turned it back on...I coudlnt' connect. When i click the little connection icon in the top right, i see the message "Wireless is disabled".
There is a key on my computer that turns the wireless card on or off, and i have tried it. It doesn't work. I have reinstalled the broadcom driver and it doesn't work. I've rebooted...And it doesn't work. I don't know enough about linux to get a solution and every other solution i find on the internet doesn't work.
I have seen in other threads that you guys usually ask for a a couple of things from the user. ifconfig and the sudo lshw -C network so i have included them below. I also looked into the ubuntu help documentation and it told me to do the lspci command.
ifconfig
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr a4:ba:db:d1:61:c2
inet addr:192.168.1.68 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::a6ba:dbff:fed1:61c2/64 Scope:Link

I have spent all day trying to wireless network to work on my Dell Inspiron 1440, but no luck.
I followed the guide here: [URL]
Here are the details of my network card:
root@bruparel-Inspiron-1440:/home/bruparel# lspci -n | grep 14e4
0c:00.0 0280: 14e4:4315 (rev 01)
Here are the more verbose details:
0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
Subsystem: Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17
Memory at f69fc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
[Code]....
Things seem to install fine, but the wireless network remains unavailable (wireless network is disabled).
If someone can walk me through the trouble-shooting process, I tried the solution suggested in the sticky at the top too but no luck.

I had just installed Ubuntu in my brother's laptop and the drivers for the laptop`s wireless card got deleted, or that's what is leading me to believe. Prior to the installation, the laptop was picking up wireless signals just fine. I tried finding the drivers on the INTERNET but there are too many and I don't want to get the wrong one. Even so, I don't know how to install it through Ubuntu or anything. I tried the "disswrapping" app. but it was looking for some sort of ".if" file type. I also tried using the Terminal, but I'm not an expert on this kind of stuff. I got Ubuntu 2 days ago on my own laptop.

I'm running on 11.04 on my Dell Inspiron 1764, and so far haven't been able to achieve internet access through either a direct wired connection or wireless.
Wireless network controller: Broadcom BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
Ethernet controller: Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 02)
Fixes I've tried so far:
Wired - Attempted to install the r8168 driver and remove the r8169 driver as is done in this thread:
url
Wireless - managed a fleeting wired connection yesterday, during which time I installed the Broadcom STA driver through Additional Drivers.
Also attempted to install the firmware-b43-lpphy-installer, following these instructions:
url
but to no avail (under Synaptic Package Manager, the firmware-b43-lpphy-installer still remains unchecked after I install it through terminal)

My wife's laptop is Dell Inspiron 6400 running 11.04. Wireless has recently stopped working. Running
rfkill list all
shows dell-wifi hard blocked no soft blocked no.
The fn plus F2 keys toggle status between blocked no and blocked yes, but network manager still can't see network. I've tried removing the Broadcom STA driver - no joy.
