After being prompted by UpdateManager, I upgraded my Compaq Presario CQ71 from 10.10 to 11.04 yesterday. Most things seem fine, except that my wifi is disabled (it was working fine in 10.10).

Reading recent posts, it seems that 11.04 has seriously screwed wifi.
I have an Advent QRC430 laptop which worked perfectly until I upgraded to Natty. Now wifi is broken. The wifi driver is rt73usb.
When I run lspci in terminal, no wifi card is listed. Running rfkill shows wifi hard blocked, but the switch on laptop makes no difference.
I've installed and run Hardware Lister - this shows wireless interface "has been disabled"
I have just upgrade to natty from maverick and my usb wifi dongle doesn't want to work. The usb wifi adapter i use is a Thonsom Speedtouch 121g. When using ubuntu 10.10 it work's fine after installing the package linux-firmware-nonfree, but after upgrading to natty it has stop working (the linux-firmware-nonfree package is installed [don't know if is the same version or an upgraded one]).
The network manager doesn't display available wifi nets. The output for lsusb is:

I have a script that toggles my touchpad on and off and I assigned it a custom keystroke using gconf-editor. It worked fine until I upgraded to Natty and now I can't make it work anymore. I checked and the script is still the value of 'command_1' and the same keystroke (<Alt>t) is still the value of run_command_1 in the universal keybindings. But, for whatever reason, when I hit <Alt>t, nothing happens. I've tried using assigning different keystrokes, but nothing has worked.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have lost wifi access with the upgrade to 11.4.Previously, the receiver icon showed on left click a menu of available networks, and on right click, available network by network settings for editing. The menu also included enable wireless connection and enable wired connection. I have wireless enabled.
But with the upgrade, the same menu appears on left click or right click, and they both show a greyed out "wireless disconnected" tab, so you can't connect from there, the tab is disabled. There's also no place else to go to find available networks or to lock into one. There also does not seem to be a place to find wired networks either.I installed my wifi network in it, and put in the correct password and set it to come on automatically, and 3x restarts did not yield any changes. Apparently network finding is disabled in this version or at least my copy.It isn't the computer: I'm on line with it now on the Windows XP side.
This is doubly problematic because if I can't get on line, I can't download a fix, and even if I could by downloading it to the Windows side, it is probably a binary with some very scripts and meticulous BASH coding or tarballing something else that I have no idea how to do even with a walk through by an expert because most of the time the experts assume I know as much about using a Linux terminal and code as they do, and I basically know absolutely nothing, it is all Greek to me from the point at which they say "open a terminal." "Go to root" might as well be said in Chinese as far as its usefulness to me. What is the plan here? A complete redo from the get go?

The problem was solved with upgrading kernel 3.2.0 to 3.16.0 from backports... but... with these steps i lost my wi-fi wl module...
It was downloaded somewhere, compiled and worked well until kernel upgrade... For the current moment i can not compile it.

I have a Broadcom BCM4318 that isn't working with the B43 or the other (I tried installing both and while they supposedly installed successfully, neither shows up in the Additional Drivers tab for me to enable.) I tried using both sets of directions stickied up at the top of this forum. Neither seems to be working for me (no guarantees on whether I did it right) though the B43 is apparently the one I need.Disclaimer: I'm a total newbie to using command line and a new convert from Windows so I'm rusty at navigating and making things work, though things are finally starting to make a little sense after two days of hacking at it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've had recurring problems with Ubuntu wifi on my Thinkpad before. Usually powering down and toggling the physical wifi switch off, then toggling wifi on again after the system has booted would solve the problem. This time that isn't working. Wireless is completely absent from the network-manager applet. Wireless works for me 99% of the time for me, but every few months will "disappear" for some reason. Does anyone have any advice or know a thread they can point me to? I've posted the results for 'lspci -k', iwconfig and 'lshw -C network' bellow:

I was happily running Ubuntu 9 but since I cannot get security updates for it anymore I had to upgrade to 11. Now I'm on Natty, and the "NetworkManager" apparently cannot deal with my latop's wifi card which worked fine for years under ubuntu 9. The laptop is a Dell latitude D610 and the card is an intel ipw2200 minipci. I used to just run /etc/init.d/network restart after I logged in to get the wireless to come up, if it failed by itself, but now I get a message that that's deprecated. Nice.
I'm running WPA. If I don't create a wireless configuration in the network manager, wireless never connects. Ever. If I do create a configuration, the connection comes up for about a minute, and then drops. And then comes up. And then drops. And then comes up. And then drops. It's insane. Also, I get a series of "Auto <ssid>" entries in the NM settings area.I dug around in /var/log, but all of the wpa_supplicant logs are of size 0, except the gzipped backups, which are all size 20. Go gzip. The syslog has some messages in it about 4-way handshake failed, and association taking too long, but since the laptop has no network connection I don't have an easy way to post those here.I just want the wireless to come up, by itself, when I turn on the laptop like it used to. I don't want to have to deal with retyping the (long and complicated) WPA password every time I wake up the machine, nor deal with the "keychain." How do I get there?
I was running a patch of my wifi connection and now i have NO wifi at all. I am totally lost right now. i have been running throught all the threads but nothing is really working. Is there a way do a full system restore (like windows) that will undo all my mistakes? my wifi has always worked until i screwed something up!

View 3 Replies View RelatedI turned down my txpower with the command: sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower 3 Which works to fine turn down my broadcast power from the default value of 15 dBm to 3 dBm. But it is reset every time I restart Ubuntu 11.04 to the default value of 15 dBm. How do I save my modified txpower settings so they don't reset after a restart? It is really annoying having to re-enter the command every time I reboot my computer!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just updated my work laptop to Natty: perfect. My home server: perfect. My oldish home laptop: no more wireless. [I use wicd instead of Knetwork (or whatever it's called) because I want a permanent connection no matter the user]
I have a D-Link DWA-645. I get the whole stage: connecting, authenticating, etc... and bad password at the end. The password is correct (hasn't changed during upgrade). I also tried disabling WPA and it still won't connect. That's wlan2.
I also tried with an older PCMCIA card that _used_ to work on ubuntu 9, but stopped on version 10: a D-LinkDWL-G650. It doesn't even show up as wlan0 as it used to. I also tried with a USB-wifi DWL-G122 which has always worked on every version of Ubuntu [I don't normally use it because it's not practical on a laptop]. I see it as wlan1, but same thing: won't connect. Note that like with wlan2 I can scan for networks and see several around. For instance:

Some more info: the access point works fine, I can connect with another device. The driver in use by Ubuntu is ath9k. Using KnetworkManager instead of wicd doesn't change anything.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix on a Toshiba Netbook NB300. After performing an upgrade I find myself unable to connect to my wirless network and have lost the wifi icon in the task bar. Ethernet connectivity is however working.

I have two laptops, both with broadcom drivers and in both it's working pretty well with my university network but I can't find my home network on the list (I can see my neighbours network). It was working perfectly before the upgrade, and of course, I can connect on windows to my home network.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have 2 machines with ubuntu (now 9.10) and 2 with XP. After upgrading the ubuntu machines to 9.10 my wired LAN does not let me connect between the linux and MS machines. They did before the upgrade. Where and what should I check to see why the ubuntu machines cannot connect to each other or to the XP machines?I have looked at the network connections and it shows 'auto eth0', last used 'never'. I select the auto eth0 and click on the edit tab and the wired tab shows a MAC address and MTU is set to automatic. The 802.1x Security tab shows it not checked and grayed out. The ipv4 settings tab shows 'automatic'. The ipv6 settings tab shows 'ignore'.
When I click on the Places/Network, the Windows Network icon comes up. When I click on it, I get the MSHOME icon and the WORKGROUP icon. When I click on either of them I get message saying "Opening MSHOME" and then the message 'unable to mount, failed to retrieve share list from server'. The same thing happens when I click the WORKGROUP icon.
I recently upgraded my Zepto laptop to Natty (11.04), and unfortunately the wifi no longer worked. I have a WPA net, and the combination with a Ralink chip seems unfortunate - judging from the number of internet posts.After browsing loads of threads on the 'net I think I have found a solution for 11.04 - it will work out of the box in 11.10 !
1) Add "blacklist rt2800pci" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
I think this makes the wifi stuff work as I can then do "iwlist wlan0 scan" and get reasonable output. But there is no integration with the Network Manager. So I have also done this (again, with inspiration from a few threads):
2) Edit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf - change the "managed=false" under "[ifupdown]" to "managed=true".
You may have to do a "service network-manager restart", restart or similar to get it going.It also seems I can suspend and get a wifi net connection upon wakeup.
i have a sony vaio VGN-NW150J laptop that was running lucid and had wireless no problem but when i upgraded to maverick i lost all functionality of my intel 5100 agn wireless card. when i run iwconfig this is what i get

I have an odd problem in that my wireless connection is okay until I close the laptop. When I open it back up, I'm unable to reconnect. This problem first occurred after upgrading to 9.10. I can reconnect after restarting. I tried several things before breaking down and reinstalling 9.04. After installing 9.04, everything works great. Any suggestions on what is going on before I try upgrading to 9.10 again? I have a Dell D600.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm facing a strange problem after upgrading my Ubuntu to 10.10. After I start up the system, the wifi is not getting connected by default (which was getting connected automatically in the earlier version). So I right click on network manager and click on 'Enable Wireless' option and it gets connected. So far so good. Now I close the laptop lid - it goes to sleep mode and after it wakes up, the wifi never gets connected. When I right click on the network manager icon, the 'Enable Wireless' option is disabled! I have to reboot my machine to get connected!

I would like to re-raise this topic that I have seen on other discussion boards but seems to be going no where.I have been using Ubuntu for many years now having switched from other distributions. All my machines ran some version of Ubuntu, until just recently. I upgraded my personal HP TX2500 from 9.04 to 10.04. No problems. After 10.10 had been out for a while I upgraded again. The wireless would drop when busy/(signal slightly weakened) etc. It would not function again unless the wifi module was reloaded.
Then I installed 10.10 on my HP NC6400 the same thing occured. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 instead. It seemed no better. After some Googling, it seemed I was not alone. I tried all the suggestions I could find and none of them worked. One suggestion was to install Fedora 14. This works perfectly on the nc6400. The HP TX2500 has been reinstalled back with 10.04 where the wireless seems ok and I assume I am stuck there for a while.
Now my question is why would the networking behave this way for Ubuntu 10.10 (10.04 as well on the NC6400) but wireless on Fedora 14 is perfect (I mean really good! Better than either Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 on any of my laptops) on the NC6400. I am hoping that we can find a way to fix this, otherwise I will likely have to drop Ubuntu completely because I do not have an upgrade path for laptops. There must be many other users in the same position who are not discussing it and just rebooting each time this occurs. This must give a negative perception of otherwise great software.

after upgrading to 11.04, I can't use the fn-f2 combination anymore to activate the wifi card. I'm using a Dell latitude laptop. Wifi is functioning normally when it's on and I can even turn it off with the hotkeys. When I try to turn it back on, the light goes on for a second and than dims again. I than have to reboot into Windows to get it back on, which is kind of annoying.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi've got an IBM thinkpad 1858. fedora 11 & 12 (KDE spin) were always running without any major problems. today, i upgraded the system from f12 to f14 using preupgrade (and a wired internet connection). the upgrade process went smoothly.
but now i don't have a wifi connection anymore - there is no icon shown in the system tray and the led does not blink. the network configuration tool shows eth1 to be inactive and the button to activate it is grey.

since the upgrade i see all avaible wifi networks as they have 100% signal, both in NetworkManager and Wicd.in iwconfig and iwlist the signal levels change, but the link quality remains the same: 70/70 (see below). What could be worng? What can i do?

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 6400 which had been running Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) perfectly.Today I upgraded it to Natty and the wifi now refuses to work. Details: While no Additional Drivers were needed on 10.10, upon installing Natty it prompted me to install "Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver". Now when it's active I don't even have the option 'Enable Wireless' (only Enable Networking). If I disable STA the Enable Wireless option comes back, yet I can't actually search for wifi networks or connect to my saved one. The keyboard key to enable/disable wireless also does nothing.
I can take this laptop to somewhere with an ethernet connection for an afternoon if need be, but am currently stumped as to what to do. Obviously I know this machine can handle Wifi under Ubuntu - it's definitely a Natty problem.
