Ubuntu Networking :: Sporadic Wifi In Natty With Thinkpad X201?

Jun 7, 2011

I've had recurring problems with Ubuntu wifi on my Thinkpad before. Usually powering down and toggling the physical wifi switch off, then toggling wifi on again after the system has booted would solve the problem. This time that isn't working. Wireless is completely absent from the network-manager applet. Wireless works for me 99% of the time for me, but every few months will "disappear" for some reason. Does anyone have any advice or know a thread they can point me to? I've posted the results for 'lspci -k', iwconfig and 'lshw -C network' bellow:

Code:

$:lspci -k

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Stopped Working On Thinkpad X201 (Intel Centrino 1000 N)?

Feb 18, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.10 on a thinkpad X201. Wireless was working, but has stopped. It still works in windows, so it is not a hardware problem. iwlist wlan0 scan sees the available networks, but I cannot associate with any of them, including my own.

Last night was my first attempt to connect to a secured network, and nm-applet failed to make the connection even after entering the WEP encryption key and SSID. By turning networking off in nm-applet I was able to manually bring up the connection by editing /etc/network/interfaces and using ifup wlan0. (nm-applet seemed to be interfering as long as networking was turned on there.) Wireless was working perfectly until I rebooted. Now I can't get it to work at all. (There were some partially completed security updates which completed when I rebooted. I hope this wasn't the cause of the breakdown.)I notice that wpa_supplicant is always running. I tried killing it in case it might be interfering with the connection process, but something keeps restarting it.

Hardware :: Thinkpad X201 Can't Seem To Support?

Apr 27, 2010

Making a new thread now that I've narrowed down the problem. So I am trying to get some form of linux, ANY form, onto my Thinkpad X201. I've narrowed down the issue to probably being due to this integrated graphics card. I had at least gotten a mostly working setup via the 9.04 alternative install... I had a working system, except for one tiny problem: The system froze shortly 30 seconds after login, without fail. So, it was completely unusable unless I stayed in text only mode. I looked around, and the issue apparently was with my graphics card on the X201.

Here is the thinkwiki page for the laptop and the graphics card:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X201
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_HD_Graphics

I had been attempting to manually update the kernel to 2.6.33 using .debs I found online - Someone suggested I try the newer version of Ubuntu, so I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 RC alt install CD... it installed fine, but when it starts up, it now just goes to a black screen. I can't even go into text only mode like the 9.04 alt install was letting me

I am very desperate, I am _very_ close to sending this laptop back to Lenovo, if anyone has any suggestions on how to get a working Ubuntu (or any other distro) install going on an X201, please share any details you can remember!

Fedora Installation :: Unable To Install 13 On Thinkpad X201

Jun 3, 2010

I tried to install Fedora 13 on X201 for a dual boot with Windows. Since there is no CD/DVD ROM on my laptop, I created a new logic partition and put the DVD iso image file of Fedora 13 on this partition. I also extracted the isolinux and image directories out of the DVD image and put it in the partition. I used grub for dos to try to boot to the installation. Here is the command I typed in grub console (For whatever reason, it did not recognize my menu.lst).

root (hd0,4)
kernel /isolinux/vmlinuz
initrd /isolinux/initrd.img

and then boot. The booting process went well until it reached "waiting for hardware to initialize", and then the screen turned black. I thought this happened because Fedora could not recognized (X201 has an integrated Intel HD Graphics adapter). So I tried adding different options to the line kernel /isolinux/vmlinuz , such as "kernel /isolinux/vmlinuz text", or "kernel /isolinux/vmlinuz xdriver=vesa nomodeset", and it still did not solve the problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: Intel Corp. Wifi Link 5300/Karmic 64b/ThinkPad W700: OS Restart 2 Reconnect

Oct 7, 2010

I have an IBM ThinkPad W700 running 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. At the office I normally connect it to the Ethernet since it's never connected very reliably to the wifi there (drops out 2 or 3 times per day, usually at the worst possible time, of course), but it always worked just fine with Netgear WGR614v5 at home... until a week or two ago.

I used to be able to come home, take the laptop out of suspend mode, and it would connect to the wifi. Occasionally there'd be some hitch and I'd have to restart the network manager (sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart) but this was only sometimes, and when I did, it'd always work. But now, when I get home from work, I need to restart the entire system to get it to connect properly again. Without restarting the whole system, it either doesn't scan for wifi networks, it doesn't find any wifi networks, it keeps stuffing up my wifi password, or it connects and gets 0% signal.

Presumably, some driver was updated recently and it doesn't work so well. What's the easiest way to find out what drivers have been updated lately, and revert to a previous version? And what else can I try restarting so I don't have to restart the entire system? I've tried /etc/init.d/network-manager restart, /etc/init.d/networking restart, /etc/init.d/network-interface restart, and restart network-manager. I've also tried turning the wireless switch at the front of the laptop off and on, many times.

Code:
$ lspci -nn
[...]
03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Wireless Wifi Link 5300 [8086:4236]
[...]
$ ifconfig wlan0

[Code]...

The info above is when I've taken my laptop out of suspend mode and it won't connect to the network. lsmod doesn't say anything about wifi nor wireless; iwlist does see my network, which my older Januty laptop is connected to without drama.

Ubuntu Networking :: Natty Lost My Wifi Card / What To Do?

Apr 29, 2011

Reading recent posts, it seems that 11.04 has seriously screwed wifi.
I have an Advent QRC430 laptop which worked perfectly until I upgraded to Natty. Now wifi is broken. The wifi driver is rt73usb.
When I run lspci in terminal, no wifi card is listed. Running rfkill shows wifi hard blocked, but the switch on laptop makes no difference.
I've installed and run Hardware Lister - this shows wireless interface "has been disabled"

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Not Working On Natty Narwhal?

Jul 25, 2011

I have a Broadcom BCM4318 that isn't working with the B43 or the other (I tried installing both and while they supposedly installed successfully, neither shows up in the Additional Drivers tab for me to enable.) I tried using both sets of directions stickied up at the top of this forum. Neither seems to be working for me (no guarantees on whether I did it right) though the B43 is apparently the one I need.Disclaimer: I'm a total newbie to using command line and a new convert from Windows so I'm rusty at navigating and making things work, though things are finally starting to make a little sense after two days of hacking at it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Natty Netman Connect/disconnect Wifi Every Minute?

Jun 26, 2011

I was happily running Ubuntu 9 but since I cannot get security updates for it anymore I had to upgrade to 11. Now I'm on Natty, and the "NetworkManager" apparently cannot deal with my latop's wifi card which worked fine for years under ubuntu 9. The laptop is a Dell latitude D610 and the card is an intel ipw2200 minipci. I used to just run /etc/init.d/network restart after I logged in to get the wireless to come up, if it failed by itself, but now I get a message that that's deprecated. Nice.

I'm running WPA. If I don't create a wireless configuration in the network manager, wireless never connects. Ever. If I do create a configuration, the connection comes up for about a minute, and then drops. And then comes up. And then drops. And then comes up. And then drops. It's insane. Also, I get a series of "Auto <ssid>" entries in the NM settings area.I dug around in /var/log, but all of the wpa_supplicant logs are of size 0, except the gzipped backups, which are all size 20. Go gzip. The syslog has some messages in it about 4-way handshake failed, and association taking too long, but since the laptop has no network connection I don't have an easy way to post those here.I just want the wireless to come up, by itself, when I turn on the laptop like it used to. I don't want to have to deal with retyping the (long and complicated) WPA password every time I wake up the machine, nor deal with the "keychain." How do I get there?

Ubuntu Networking :: Sporadic Connection To 2wire Router, All Other Routers OK

Sep 7, 2010

One day I lost my WiFi connection while doing nothing particularly interesting. OK then...I investigate, and I find that it only connects occasionally, and when it does, even then it will render a page almost none of the time. I can't even ping anything. I tried going to the router's config page (192.168.1.254 for this one) and found that even that won't load. I power cycled the router, and it did nothing. I thought that the router was dying, but I realized when I switched to Windows 7 (this is a dual boot machine) it works fine. Also, when I went back to Ubuntu and tried connecting to a neighbor down the block's WiFi, it also works fine (this is what I'm using to post this message.) I did all I could to fix this, even to the point of dismantling the machine and moving cards around and such, but it did nothing. I finally formatted my Ubuntu partition and reinstalled, and it also did nothing. It also doesn't work from the Live CD. The router works fine on all the other computers in the house, wired or wireless, and also my phone and PSP's.

While connected, in Firefox, sites sit at "looking up", "waiting for", or "connecting to". It seems to be at random which one. They all time out, none of them say server not found. I thought it was a DNS problem, so I tried some DNS's I know (Google's, OpenDNS, DNS Advantage etc.) but it did bupkis. One thing I notice is that while connected, I have a fantastic signal strength of about 85%, when before any of this happened, it was more around 70%. I didn't move the antenna anywhere or anything having to do with the reception. Also, once connected, it stays connected, it's just getting it initialized that's the problem, but even while connected it doesn't seem to work well.

This is incredibly frustrating, as I did not change anything with the router at all, in any way shape or form. It just spontaneously decided to not like Linux. The router's model is 2700HG-B.Could it be that my wireless card is dying? I've had the thing for 6 years, and had no sign of it failing. I'm thinking that can't be it because it works with the same computer and network, but with a different OS. Could there be something wrong with the Ubuntu driver for my card, ath5k? I was going to say there's something up with wpa supplicant, because I use WPA-PSK for authentication, but I turned that off from another computer and it still does not work.

Again, the problem is that Ubuntu works with every router I can connect to EXCEPT mine, and Windows 7 on the same machine works with the same router. My router works with every other device in the house. I have changed nothing networking related, and even reinstalling Ubuntu did nothing. I would try it with Ubuntu on another machine, but my machine is the only wireless one in the house (and I can't put Ubuntu on the wired ones, that would PO some people),and I would try it with a different wireless card/USB thingy, but I don't have another one.

EDIT: I got some other Live CDs out, I tried Kubuntu 10.04, and Ubuntu 9.10. NEITHER WORK!

Ubuntu Installation :: Connecting To Wifi Hangs Natty?

May 12, 2011

Just upgraded to Natty on both my desktop and netbook. Desktop upgrade was a breeze, and I'm liking the changes.Netbook isn't having such a good time however.First login after upgrade (using default gnome settings) played the login sound and froze. No mouse movement/keyboard response. I tried again with Ubuntu Classic - nothing. Finally Ubuntu Classic No Effects did correctly boot/login. I allowed it to perform a proper shutdown (was doing a power flip beforehand), and it was able to boot into normal Ubuntu Unity.

I enabled the wifi module using the laptop's keyboard shortcut, and Ubuntu searched for nearby networks. After finding my prefered network, it started to connect and threw the system into a command console abyss and froze. Tried again on the Ubuntu Class no effects, and it freezes on connecting to a wifi network. If the laptop crashes and I have to perform a power cycle, I can't boot into normal Ubuntu mode. I have to go back into Classic no effects.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lenovo X201 Workaround That Works?

Aug 22, 2010

Finally got my Lenovo X201 up and running by combining a couple of different workarounds suggested for the graphics driver problem that is plaguing so many. This works on my X201 3249CTO, running BIOS version 1.17, with Ubuntu 10.04.1 (kernel version 2.6.32-24). I have tested it to differing degrees with all four relevant installers (32- and 64-bit, desktop and alternate).

STEP 1. Add "xforcevesa i915.modeset=0" at install. When you first start the desktop installer, you should see "ISOLINUX..." in the upper lefthand corner of the screen, followed by a couple of white logos at the bottom of an otherwise blank screen. As soon as you see these logos, press the space bar to get the advanced install menu. If you are using the alternate installer, you will get the install menu automatically.

--Make sure "Install Ubuntu" is highlighted. Press F6. You should see the install command line near the bottom of the screen, plus a popup menu with additional options. Pres Esc to close the popup menu. A cursor should appear at the end of the install command line.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid 64-bit Doesn't Boot On Lenovo X201

Aug 19, 2010

I'm trying to do a clean install of Lucid (10.04.1) 64-bit on a Lenovo X201, Ubuntu only (no dual-boot), using the alternate install disk for an encrypted LVM.

I followed the default options at all points during installation, except that I opted not to configure the network because the computer is not currently connected to a network. The install (said that it) completed correctly.

When I turn on the computer, it correctly runs the BIOS. Then I get a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the upper lefthand corner. The hard drive accesses a couple of times. After a few seconds, the screen goes off (the cursor doesn't just vanish; the screen actually goes off), and it just sits there indefinitely without booting.

I should note that I've tried this with the boot order in the BIOS set several different ways, including HD first and only, with no effect.

Ubuntu :: Why Is Cd/dvd Media Mounting So Sporadic On 10.04

for some reason/s in ubuntu 10.04 lucid i get the most sporadic and seemingly random results for mounting cd's or dvd's. most of the time they just don't mount and i have to reboot my computer and then they seem to mount. I've been reading the forums and there seems to be many, many many..... posts about this problem in 10.04 as it would seem many people are having issues relating to this.i've tried every thing i can think of to resolve it (although i'm still a bit of a newbie so that might not mean much to the advanced users out there). my system is up to date, i've tried the "boot up with cd/dvd in the drive option", switching my boot order in bios, adding a /media/cdrom0 dir and using mountmanager to automount that drive at bootup but none of these options work for me.

[code]....

my installation of 10.04 is a fresh install so i don't see why i should be having the fstab issue noted in the posts but maybe i'm wrong.
here's what

Code:

dpkg -l hal

returns

Code:

| Status=Not/Inst/Cfg-files/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend

if there is someone's expertise that i can draw upon i would be most sincerely appreciative. in fact that is such an understatement having this issue resolved would be as amazing, for me, as the entire world suddenly becoming friends (...like in the non-facebook kinda way).
