Ubuntu Networking :: Make A Wireless AP And Share Wireless Internet With It?

Mar 12, 2011

I have a Dell Studio 1558 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. It's a brilliant piece of hardware and love everything about it except some of it's overheating problems. When I first bought it with Windows 7 pre-installed, it had an application installed on it called PeerNet, which creates a wireless network for other computers (and wifi-enabled phones) to connect to it. Simultaneously, you could also share your internet connection with these users. The internet connection could be either wired or wireless.

My question is, how do I go about finding the same functionality on Ubuntu since I know my hardware is capable of it. (I believe in Windows 7, it creates a virtual adapter that it uses) I know there are ways to share a WIRED internet connections with some help with the terminal, but I haven't found a way to share a WIRELESS internet connection. The network manager allows you to create a wireless network but I'm unable to connect to another wireless network at the same time.

The reason I mentioned mobile phones is because my mobile (Android 2.2) is unable to find a wireless network created by the network manager, but another laptop is (without internet access that is). I've noticed that mobile devices and iPod's aren't able to find ad-hoc networks on Windows PCs as well.

I hope someone out there will be able to find a solution for me (and surely others as well!) Maybe the final release of 11.04 will help out later if nothing turns up now.

Networking :: Share Internet Through A Wireless Access Point?

I started using Arch just a few days ago. forward traffic to the Wireless access point I created on arch. i am using cable internet (ppp0) which I want to share via a usb wifi adapter running as a WAP. I followed the instructions in this link to enable the AP mode. Afterwards I followed the instructions provided in the Arch Wiki to forward the traffic but because of my inexperience I am still unable to connect to the internet. Here is the output of iptables -nvL :

Fedora Networking :: Share Internet Connection With Other Computers On LAN ?

May 28, 2010

Trying to share my internet connection with other computers on my LAN. I've tried doing this with Debian, Ubuntu & Fedora so far...

My Intended Setup is as follows;

The Problem: So far I've not been able to get an internet connection from any computer connected to the HUB. I currenty have Fedora 13 on PC1 but have also tried with both Ubuntu 10.04 & Debian Lenny. I am open to using any Linux based distro on PC1 as long it has a Gnome Desktop. eth0 on PC1 can be Static or Dhcp, but I would prefer to set Static IPs on eth1 & all of the Client PCs

To the best of my knowledge I have enabled ipv4 forwarding in sysctl.conf (& some other changes);

Code:

All changes I made to the Firewall (all other Firewall settings are still at default, no custom rules added yet);

Router is set up to assign dhcp from 192.168.xxx.100 & 192.168.xxx.200

At the moment I have only 1 PC attached to the HUB. It's Ubuntu 10.04 (PC2)
It's details are;
ip 192.168.xxx.103
netmask255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.xxx.101

Thus Far I can't ping 192.168.XXX.103 from PC1 & I can't ping 192.168.XXX.101 from PC2. (unreachable) I have an internet connection on PC1 (of course)

Networking :: Use The Laptop With The Wireless Connection To Share The Internet Connection?

Feb 4, 2010

I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

Fedora Networking :: How To Share Internet From Windows Xp To Fedora 10

May 15, 2009

I am just struck in a situation of sharing internet connection with windows xp and fedora. the scenario is i'm connected to internet via wireless card in winxp system, i connected fedora and winxp through ethernet cards via cross over cable.

Now i shared the wireless connection in winxp by checking "allows other user to share this internet connection."

I have given ethernet adapter in windows xp an ip address"192.168.0.1/24"

I have given manually an ip address "192.168.0.2/24 with gateway 192.168.0.1" in fedora computer .

I have run the network setup wizard in winxp and name the workgroup as Mygroup then changed the smb.conf file as follows:

The probelm now is i can't able to get internet access in fedora i can able to ping fedora ip address from win xp. but in my network places ->workgroup computers there is nothing .

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Create A Virtual WiFi And Share Internet Access With Many Others?

There is a new feature in Windows 7 that make u able to create a virtual WiFi and share ur internet access with many others.

I know there is ad-hoc but sometimes it has problems, for example I couldn't connect to my friend's ad-hoc network (he is using Windows 7) but I _could_ connect to the virtual WiFi he created, it appeared just like any other wireless network unlike ad-hoc

so is there any way to create a virtual WiFi and not ad-hoc in Linux?

This password is accepted. Network Manager says I am connected to ChinaNet-TRtk, but in fact, I can't reach the internet via wireless. If I disconnect the cable, I can't get through. I have the settings on automatic dhcp. I have nothing in BSSID, I don't know what that is. I unchecked the box 'require ipv4 addressing for this connection to complete' Ditto that for ipv6.

I installed Fedora 15 today and after a few very long hours finally got the broadcom driver to work and my laptop is now connected to my router. Yay! But now when I try going to a website in firefox it says server not found. I can ping anything inside my network but when I try to ping outside the network, for example google, it says ping: unknown host google.com. So I thought it might be a DNS problem but the network settings point to the router for DNS so I'm not sure what else could be wrong. All of the other settings look correct.

Fedora Networking :: Internet Lag And Windows Network "failed To Retrieve Share List From Server"?

Apr 29, 2011

I'm running Fedora 14 and when I'm surfing the web, it seems to lag in between pages. I don't think its my net connection, I just wiped windows 7 off my system for Fedora and it did not suffer from the same lag issues.I've tried adding in google's alternate dns server 8.8.8.8 but it didn't seem to fix the issue. I ran into this issue a couple years back on Ubuntu 8.1 or something like that, and I never could find out what I needed to configure.My second problem is that when I try to connect to other Windows systems on my wlan or wired connection, it gives the error "failed to retrieve share list from server". I'm not experienced in networking, can someone explain this to me?

It ran with ndiswrapper.1.51.

Yesterday I installed the live-CD Fedora 10 on a new partition in another hard drive and so I have Fedora 10 but WITHOUT Internet connection.

I tried to install Ndiswrapper but the 'make' command doesn't exist in my Fedora 10 !

What are all the things I need to download from Internet to ensure the several commands like 'make uninstall', 'make', 'make install'... and to ensure installing Ndiswrapper ?

Dec 7, 2009

I was trying out the fedora live cd but I couldn't get my Internet to work. When I open firefox it always said server not kind no matter what I searched or put into the address bar:

I tried many different things but none o them worked
I am able to ping m router an I'm able to login to my routers page
I am also able to login to my modems page and it says connected to the Internet
I tried restarting the modem and the router but I still got the same problem
I also tried disabling the firewall but still had the same problem
I tried a command and I was able to receive packets from google.com, but It never went through in firefox
I also tried out a torrent (I had it saved on a USB) and it worked it was downloading fine
I am able to ping googles web page but I am not able to search anything.

In firefox preferences and in network proxy I tried many different proxy settings bit none o them worked I always get the message server not found. All this was done while connected directly with Ethernet cable modem and router but untried wireless and it didn't work either on the top right corner of the screen the network icon says auto eth0 active. I'm using fedora 12 livecd.

Fedora Networking :: Connect To Internet - Set Up The (Ralink RT2501USB Wireless)?

Aug 6, 2010

I just installed Fedora 13, and now I figured, maybe I don't know so much about pc anyway. Before I tell you my problem, I would like to say that I know a lot about windows, but about linux, I don't know anything. A plain beginner. And about my problem, it's more like a "how to" question than a problem.

You see, I don't know how to set up the wifi? The pc has installed wifi, and all I need to know is how I can connect to the internet. In windows you would usually just press the connection icon and then choose witch network you would like to access, and then eventually type in the password, and there you go. But it seems it's a little more advanced at Fedora. But I will give it a shot.
