Ubuntu Networking :: Linksys WRT54GS Works Under 10.10 But Not Windows 7 (same PC)?
Apr 23, 2011
I have a Linksys WRT54GS and use grub to dual boot a Win7/Ubuntu 10.10 setup. The PC is jacked directly into the router, not using wireless, and only seems to connect to the net when I'm using Ubuntu! To make matters more interesting, my Dell Mini 9 with Ubuntu 10.4 remix and my fiances 2011 Macbook Pro (OSX) work just fine right now with wireless and wired connections to the same router, respectively. Thoughts? Still sort of a noob to Ubuntu, rarely post on the forums since most things are already asked, but I can provide more information if necessary.

How would one forward a specific outgoing port to a local computer?
E.G.
Router: 192.168.1.1
Comp 1: 192.168.1.100
Comp 2: 192.168.1.200
When Comp 1 tries to browse to an internet page, forward that connection via the router to comp 2 to display a custom webpage. Using WRT54GS

I don't why this is but we have WiFi working on our computer. The only problem is that when I search for LinkSys folder or Cisco folder nothing shows up. Is there something I need to do for that? I have tried to search for it in the folders themselves by doing a search but nothing comes up.

I've only installed Ubuntu 10.04 Server yesterday, and it was the first time I had ever used it. As far and I can tell I have my Apache server up and running. When I go to localhost I get the 'It works!' page.
I tried checking my port in Windows, after I have Xampp loaded up, it says the port is working fine, and the site loads up properly, which leads me to believe the problem not in my router.
I've installed ddclient and put the proper information in as far as I can see but it still doesn't work. I've been testing my port here: [url]
And here is what I have in my ddclient.conf:

My Windows machine can ping Ubuntu by name, but Ubuntu can only ping the Windows machine by using it's IP address. This was working fine in both directions until I purged Samba. After purging Samba, I couldn't ping in either direction unless I used the IP address. I did some reading and found that Samba provides NetBIOS functionality that allows the machines to resolve host names without a DNS. Since I'm not running a local DNS, I decided to reinstall Samba. Unfortunately, I've not been able to restore it to full working condition. I don't want to use hosts files as all the IP addresses are assigned automatically by DHCP. I want to be able to access the Windows machine by name.

We just set up a vpn & samba server and are running into this problem.
we can log into the vpn and can ssh, http, ftp in the various servers on the internal network. however when trying to view Samba/Windows shares over any windows machine, they fail to connect. BUT we can vpn in on any android device and using a samba app view the Samba & Windows shares on any server we try.
If im logged in the network internally, there does not seem to be a problem. Only if we VPN in from the outside.

I installed Ubuntu (10.04) today and it has gone smoothly except for the fact that I can't connect to the Internet when in Ubuntu (connection works fine in Windows XP). I am using a wireless USB card (Linksys WUSB600N) to connect.
The weird thing is that the card detects all the local networks, asks me for a password to my network, and it even says it is connected to my network after I put the password in -- but when I open Firefox no pages will load.
There is another weird quirk as well: Ubuntu will not restart or shut down properly (it hangs around indefinitely with the little white / orange dots going across the screen) unless I first remove the wireless card from the USB slot. But that doesn't bother me as badly as the lack of Internet.

I have a Gateway ML6721 laptop that uses a Realtek RTL8187B for wireless comms. I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux. I am trying out linux using a usb stick, 16Gb with a 4Gb persistence. If I stay in the same room as the router there is no problem. If I walk too far, I get disconnected. Works fine in windows throughout the whole house. Is there a setting I can change or do I need to use a different driver?

I mean something like Teamviewer so i can click-click and be there in no time, without knowing my IP (it's dynamic so that's a toughy, when i was using VNC i had to write a crontab script that uploaded my IP to a place i could always access every hour). Looked trough tons of apps, Googled for hours, found nothing.

I just got Ubuntu and am new at this stuff. I have a dual boot windows 7 64 bit one and ubuntu 10.4. I booted ubuntu at startup and then tried to go online, but it says my wireless device is disabled. I tried pressing the keys on my keyboard to see if that may work, but it doesn't. I am lost and new at this.

am currently using Windows 7 across my networked PCs at home.
I've just received my new Samsung N250 Plus Netbook which comes with Windows 7 Starter (yuk). I read a post on Ebuyer from someone who has installed ubuntu on his N250 so thought I'd give it a go tonight.
My main concern is whether my wi-fi card (Broadcom 802.11n according to windows) will work when I remove windows and install ubuntu. I intend to use the netbook for internet use only while working abroad.
Is it possible to test it works by running ubuntu from my USB stick first (without removing windows 7)?

story is my brother is a dindows lover (gamer) and hes been gettin attacked by virus's,etc cause he runs his Vista setup with no firewall or antivirus
He says the firewall, etc slows down the PC too much for gaming He doesnt want to use Linux as his games wont play on Linux as on dindows
He wants to know if you can install a Linux firewall/gateway or whatever into his Linksys WRT54GC router and thus protect his PC without using a firewall or av in it.
EDIT: precisely; he has a Linksys wireless-G connected to a always-on Verizon Westel 6100G modem so its a wired connection, not wireless

I'm trying to connect to a friend's Linksys WAG160N router using Ubuntu 10.10, but it's just refusing to connect. I can connect to other wireless networks fine - it seems to just be this router. The wireless indicator applet thing shows that I'm trying to connect, but the password box always just pops up again and again. I'm certain I've got the password correct and am able to connect under OSX on the same computer. Connecting to it via ethernet also works fine.

I have loaded ubuntu 9.10, and am not getting internet from my router using a linksys EG1032. I have found articles stating that i should use the sk (URL...) or nge URL...)drivers. According to the instructions i found, they require that i make changes to my kernel config. I do not know how to do that, or if doing so is wise.If someone would help me figure out how to connect this NIC card.

My first Ubuntu/Mythbuntu install. Installed OS, plugged in linksys wireless G adapter. It finds the network but cannot connect. Discovered wireless priviledges while setting up admin/user accounts. Should be ready to go. or not, I'm thinking it needs a driver but
1) in linux? certainly not in Fedora.
2) If it can see the network it doesn't need a driver,
My settings are wrong or I'm missing something. SSID is set in settings. Do I need mac address and BSSID?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my formerly XP system, and I'm trying to get my wireless network working. I have a Linksys WUSB11 v2.6 wireless adapter connected by USB to the system.
The system networking icon reports "No wired networks".
I'm not sure whether or not the system sees the USB ports... If so, it apparently doesn't recognize the adapter.
I saw a few posts that indicated that this adapter didn't work on 10.04 but it had worked on 9.04.
I'm looking for any info to get this working, including any or all of the following:
* How to determine if the system sees the USB ports (or is it "obvious" that it does)
* Should the wireless adapter work just by plugging it in?
* How to troubleshoot the networking adapter to get it working
* (If downgrading to 9.04 is likely to solve the problem) how to downgrade to 9.04 from 10.04...

Previously I had my desktop hooked up to a nearby router via an ethernet cord with my parents' computer having a wireless usb adapter to connect (This thing: [uRL]). We just moved and our setup has reversed (router is near their computer, I am using the usb adapter). I just installed the latest Ubuntu and now I can't get the usb adapter to work. I'm very new to Linux and I have no idea what to do. I think this is the same usb adapter.

I need to run the setup CD to go ahead. I searched more than three hours to find out how to run this CD so that I can complete the setup of my new modem-router but did not find any solution.

My old ubuntu laptop beeps 3 time on startup and then freezes. This forced me to install 10.04 on a new laptop. Now I can't get the linksys wpc54gs ver 2 to get connect. I can see the router with a padlock by it. I pretty sure I have the correct password in the right spot. I can access the internet with the wire connection. I'm sure it something simple I forgot from before when the card was working in the old laptop.

Here is the situation: I am currently running Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit. I'm trying to get my Linksys AE1000 to run correctly. I have followed many tutorials but most notably was:[URL].. lsmod shows that rt3572sta is loaded. network manager in gnome is able to find my router. my problem occurs when it tries to connect to the router using wpa2 security. It continually asks for the wireless password then will freeze the system after a number of attempts. After digging in for a bit, I was able to dig out a dmesg trapping the error:
BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffcfb0138af1ec
IP: [<ffffffffa021c7e8>] Cntl0idRTBssidProc+0x78/0x570 [rt3572sta]
PGD 0
Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP
last sysfs file: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu7/cache/index2/shared_cpu_map
CPU 2
I really don't see the need to continue on with those error messages lsmod still shows rt3572sta after the failure. In case anyone wants to see the changes I have made to the files before the make, I have included them. but changed the extension to "txt" to accommodate the up-loader and my rt_linux is too big to fit here, just not that it was 2 lines that were changed to work with the kernel. If anyone wants to know what I mean by the system freezes, I do mean just that. The mouse will continue to work, but I am then unable to open any programs, unable to reboot the computer. it requires a hard reset.
I have uninstalled the drivers, installed them, make them, make install them, make clean, start from scratch a few times, and am getting no give here.

I am dual booting XP and Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6410 and I have a Linksys WRT120N router connected to my Modem.
So the weird thing is, under XP I can use the internet while connected to my router. Under Ubuntu I can't use the internet while connected to my router. But I can use the internet in Ubuntu if I connect to my neighbor's router called "linksys". So something happens when I connect to my router that makes Ubuntu not able to access the internet. But if I'm connected to my Neighbors router or if I use XP while connected to my router I can use the internet.
I have been using Ubuntu for about a year, so I'm getting better but still a noob. I've tried to figure out what's going on by looking at other forums and posts and trying to see if anyone has solved this. So far I've had no luck. This is also the first of many problem I have encountered that I have been unable to solve using online posts, and is the first problem that I have had to resorted to creating a post to try and fix.
