Ubuntu Networking :: Simple Free Remote Control Solution That Works On Windows
Feb 19, 2010
I mean something like Teamviewer so i can click-click and be there in no time, without knowing my IP (it's dynamic so that's a toughy, when i was using VNC i had to write a crontab script that uploaded my IP to a place i could always access every hour). Looked trough tons of apps, Googled for hours, found nothing.
I have a very simple network of two computers. One is running ubuntu (Maverick) and the other running Windows (Vista). The two computers are networked satisfactorily but I wish to control the Vista computer from the ubuntu one.I have tried running UltraVNC on the Vista computer and the default VNC from ubuntu. However neither computer can see the other using VNC.
i have hp hdx-x16 1155ca laptop and my problem is that my remote control is not working on both of linux and windows so how can i distinguish the problem and solve it
Is there any software that can do that? I would hate to have to run the android emulator software and run remotedroid on it.... so many wasted resources for a simple program. Any one know of an app that would let me do this that is made for linux? (specifically ubuntu)?
How to setup remote control on Ubuntu 9 for use of windows client ?
Just for use in a home network. I've had a computer for media files for a long time and now I changed from Windows 2000 to Ubuntu 9. I the home network there is some Windows W2k and XP Home and I will use VNC or RDP for remote control of this Ubuntu desktop.
I've no experience of Linux at all and I've seen some notes about this with no luck.
I'm looking for a free backup solution how work in client-server in both environments Linux(server) and Windows(client). in my case, i want to give a disk space quota in my Linux server for each remote windows client.
I want to have a Linux server "control" a number of Windows workstations. The workstations are a mixture of XP Pro, 7 Pro, and 7 Home Premium (the latter won't join a domain so can't have all the features I want mind). I want:
Centralised username and password database. Easy to add users. Roaming user profiles, so users can switch computers and take their settings with them. If possible, settings for selected programs shared between XP and 7. (They need separate profiles.) My Documents on a network file server. I'm interested in having transparent versioning on this - perhaps by using a copy-on-write filesystem, perhaps just by using a version control app on the server and having cron make a commit every night.
Able to manage software installation and removal centrally. (This I already do, using WPKG). Able to manage configuration centrally. Basically pretty much anything the user could change, I want to be able to force a setting of. I'm thinking desktop wallpaper locking, forcing use of a web proxy, setting printers, restricting use of USB drives, etc. Printer accounting.
Give the clients resolvable names (probably DNS, maybe WINS). This is mainly to help if I need to remote into a client desktop. I don't know to what extent this can be done with Samba. I know it doesn't have all the features of Windows servers, but I know next to nothing about Windows servers. So, can what I want be done? How I'm prepared to read docs for and test things out, but I don't want to be looking for tutorials on something not possible!
I need to remotely control my parents' computers to tech support them.My parents use Windows (XP) while I use Linux (Sidux) intuitive application since this is my first attempt at this:
-free -preferably thru browser
TeamViewer and LogMeIn turn up in my search. Seems like these two are the most popular. How do they stack up to each other?
i want to remote control my laptop with my phone via terminal
im trying to use this guide to connect my android phone to my fedora laptop via ssh and vnc, but the connectbot ssh connection is timed out
[URL]
however, this guide assumes a running ssh and vnc server, which isn't trivial to me, i think i have established these, but i don't know how to test it
also i am not shure if my router and firewall configuration is correct, i disabled wan blocking but didn't enable remote config management on my rooter, is that correct?
Canon cameras used to come with a piece of software called remote capture for Windows and MacOS.
You plug in the camera via USB, and then the camera display is on your monitor. From there you can do everything your camera does, like taking pictures of video. Does anyone know if there is linux equivalent software that can do this?
I have found this software, but new cameras aren't supported. [url]
Windows 7 computer can't see ubuntu 10.04 computer. Ubuntu machine can see and access rest of windows network including a linux enabled PVR. Tried various things to no avail. When setting up for shared folders I got a message that I needed to install shared services. I did this but I only have one share through option: Unix networks (NFS). The samba option, which I should be using is not available. I tried to allow "Share files over the network" but had to install some extra service. While "share files over the network" can and has been enabled, accessing the windows network has become painfully slow and my windows 7 machine still can't see the linux box
I'm looking for a useable remote desktop solution that works like Microsoft's RDP.The included "remote desktop" vnc server in Ubuntu doesn't work because every time I want to log in remotely, I have to first go sit down in front of the machine running ubuntu, log in, disable desktop effects, then manually adjust the desktop resolution to fit the target guest machine. I can't really do that if I'm on my laptop at the airport.
Some things I have tried:NoMachine NX does not work because once I've launched applications remotely on my laptop there's no way to get them back once I'm at the machine locally. Also, there's a sound feature, but it doesn't work. Remote X11 doesn't work for the same reasons.
1. I need to be able to launch an application remotely, then when I get home, go sit at the machine locally and use that application there without having to re-launch it.
2. I need to be able to hear the sound playing on the remote computer.
3. I need it to work with desktop effects enabled.
Essentially, I want it to "just work" the way Windows' Remote Desktop works.
There is no data of a particularly sensitive nature on her PC, and it would not be a problem if it involved a telephone call in advance on each occasion, to arrange for her to start the server or whatever.
It's not particularly important whether or not she could view the local screen while I am controlling the PC.
What is important is performance of screen updates - her connection (although broadband) can be a bit slow at times.
Can anyone recommend a straightforward and reliable method to do this? I am quite happy digging through documentation.
I have Googled, and there seem to be many alternative approaches.
Is VNC the way to go (and if so, which one)? Or something else?
I have this problem where the 10.10 LiveCD 64-bit works (as in I get full resolution display and no video issues at all). But after install, the OS boots successfully but there's no display. I know it's successful because I was able to login in the dark (sound works).
Here's what I have: HP m9340f (NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS with HDMI) 46" Sharp connected via HDMI Windows 7, works fine.
Here's what I tried with no luck: 1. CTRL-ALT-F1 still doesn't show anything on screen, no terminal 2. Connected via VGA 3. Connected another 17" monitor via VGA, rebooted 4. Added vga=789 in grub before booting
The weird thing is that I had 10.04 before and it was working for a while then it suddenly stopped working. I figured I'd wait until 10.10 but I now have the same issue. I haven't tried 32-bit... I can give that a shot in a bit.
I been struggling with this since Karmic and I know others have as well. This is really the only thing making me keep a Windows install around for my personal stuff.
Problem: Convert .TS files to iPod or really any smaller format keeping A/V sync after edit. I can covert my .TS file perfectly if I do not edit it but I want to just do a simple, quick trim of 2 mins from beginning and end.
HandBrake with convert the file perfectly but cannot trim. Avidemux does a great job on the video but I always have to play with the audio shift to get it in sync. It is usually betwenn -250ms to -1000ms off but I cannot count on it. If I run the video through DGIndex in Wine or view it with Mediainfo both programs detect the an offset problem but they are always wrong by almost 500ms and it is never constant.
Regular video editing I have pretty good luck with my normal DV files and I could even run the .TS files through other programs but it is too time consuming to be useful form this simple task. Anytime I want to take my recorded TV .TS files I cannot edit them quickly without making a full project out of it in Openshot Cinelerra, etc.
Has anyone found a quick, reliable way to do some lite video trimming in Ubuntu and keep A/V sync without having to resort to any Windows programs?
EDIT: Also I really do not want to resort to have to demux separately either. I know I am asking a lot but I got spoiled with a couple of Windows programs that will edit without reencode programs like VideoReDo can do the editing and converting all at once (for $100 !).
how one professionaly would solve the security and administration for the multiple webadmins, but firstly I give some general information.I spent 2 days searching and there are alot of good guides but I dont see my specific questions answered, not so I can understand them atleast.I have Ubuntu 10.10 64bit server edition installed.I am educating myself and am new to linux but use vmware and have installed Gentoo multiple times and a copy of Ubuntu server. This server is going to be setup on the 64-bit 10.10 Ubuntu virtual machine.
Is there a free online vulnerability scanner where either I can give them the IP address to scan or can be initiated from the console command, tool, or text based browser. I use GRC's Shields Up when I have a GUI, but I want a scan ran on my website that runs Ubuntu 8.04 server on a hosted VPS.
I've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.
I've only installed Ubuntu 10.04 Server yesterday, and it was the first time I had ever used it. As far and I can tell I have my Apache server up and running. When I go to localhost I get the 'It works!' page.
I tried checking my port in Windows, after I have Xampp loaded up, it says the port is working fine, and the site loads up properly, which leads me to believe the problem not in my router.
I've installed ddclient and put the proper information in as far as I can see but it still doesn't work. I've been testing my port here: [url]
My Windows machine can ping Ubuntu by name, but Ubuntu can only ping the Windows machine by using it's IP address. This was working fine in both directions until I purged Samba. After purging Samba, I couldn't ping in either direction unless I used the IP address. I did some reading and found that Samba provides NetBIOS functionality that allows the machines to resolve host names without a DNS. Since I'm not running a local DNS, I decided to reinstall Samba. Unfortunately, I've not been able to restore it to full working condition. I don't want to use hosts files as all the IP addresses are assigned automatically by DHCP. I want to be able to access the Windows machine by name.
I have a Linksys WRT54GS and use grub to dual boot a Win7/Ubuntu 10.10 setup. The PC is jacked directly into the router, not using wireless, and only seems to connect to the net when I'm using Ubuntu! To make matters more interesting, my Dell Mini 9 with Ubuntu 10.4 remix and my fiances 2011 Macbook Pro (OSX) work just fine right now with wireless and wired connections to the same router, respectively. Thoughts? Still sort of a noob to Ubuntu, rarely post on the forums since most things are already asked, but I can provide more information if necessary.
We just set up a vpn & samba server and are running into this problem.
we can log into the vpn and can ssh, http, ftp in the various servers on the internal network. however when trying to view Samba/Windows shares over any windows machine, they fail to connect. BUT we can vpn in on any android device and using a samba app view the Samba & Windows shares on any server we try.
If im logged in the network internally, there does not seem to be a problem. Only if we VPN in from the outside.
I just installed an Ubuntu partition on my MSI U210 netbook. Wireless worked fine on the Windows XP that was there before, but not on Ubuntu. I tried plugging in the Ethernet, and that had no effect.
I have a Windows XP Professional desktop that I would like to remote connect to from my Ubuntu 9.10 laptop. I would like to connect in such a way that the current user of the XP machine doesn't get logged off when I connect. I have googled this subject and have been unable to find this exact subject. I am fairly comfortable using the terminal although I am still learning it. I have heard FreeNX is a good program but from what I can tell it's only used to connect from Windows to Ubuntu. Is this correct? I would also like to remote connect from the above mentioned laptop to the XP machine while at work over the internet if that's possible.
