Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To The Internet When (connection Works Fine In Windows XP)?

Apr 30, 2010

I installed Ubuntu (10.04) today and it has gone smoothly except for the fact that I can't connect to the Internet when in Ubuntu (connection works fine in Windows XP). I am using a wireless USB card (Linksys WUSB600N) to connect.

The weird thing is that the card detects all the local networks, asks me for a password to my network, and it even says it is connected to my network after I put the password in -- but when I open Firefox no pages will load.

There is another weird quirk as well: Ubuntu will not restart or shut down properly (it hangs around indefinitely with the little white / orange dots going across the screen) unless I first remove the wireless card from the USB slot. But that doesn't bother me as badly as the lack of Internet.

Networking :: Internet Connection Fine In Windows Extremely Slow In Fedora 14

Dec 10, 2010

I've been troubleshooting this problem for several hours now and I'm out of ideas. My internet connection is fine in Windows 7 but an older computer I resurrected (AMD Athlon 1.7 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Fedora 14 Security Lab Spin) is having the stop-and-go's with its internet connection. It will work for very briefly, then it gets extremely slow, where any page I try to navigate to in Firefox 3.6 takes forever to load.I have a DSL connection and my DSL modem is connected to a Linksys WRT54G2 router. I set up a static IP in Windows but don't know how to do this yet in Fedora 14, and I need to get my internet connection working so I can troubleshoot further, but with it being so slow, I'm having to use Windows to search for problems and then switch over to the Fedora box via KVM (IOGEAR), which I also just started using. I don't think that would be related, but who knows.

OpenSUSE Network :: Can't Browse Internet At University / Works Fine In Windows

Mar 30, 2011

I'm not able to connect to my university's internet facilities under openSUSE 11.4. I have been able to connect in the past and I am still able to connect in Windows 7.When I try to connect to the university WiFi, a valid IP address is assigned to me and the gateway address appears to be correct, so I don't see a problem in the DHCP negotations. Same with my university's Ethernet: I get a valid IP address, but I can't connect to the internet. When I browse to any site with Chromium/Chrome/ Firefox/lynx/curl, the page is stuck at "Sending request". I have tried disabling my firewall - that didn't solve anything.I don't know what else I can try and the campus' network administrators are puzzled. How can I resolve my issue?

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect To Windows Internet Connection Share (ICS)

Mar 16, 2010

My friend is trying to share his clearwire connection with me using Windows ICS. Using network-manager or wicd, I am unable to connect to his share. I am able to connect unencrypted with iwconfig, to the ad-hoc network, and then use dhclient to gain ip address.

I am not able to connect to WPA encrypted share using network-manager or wicd. nm-applet crashes when trying to connect. I am attempting to setup wpa_supplicant, but haven't got it working yet.As usual, the wireless networking out of the box experience in Ubuntu doesn't work. This is extremely frustrating. If Ubunut's goals are to be the default desktop, then these guys need to get wifi that "Just Works"...

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Ping Windows By Name But IP Works Fine

Dec 3, 2010

My Windows machine can ping Ubuntu by name, but Ubuntu can only ping the Windows machine by using it's IP address. This was working fine in both directions until I purged Samba. After purging Samba, I couldn't ping in either direction unless I used the IP address. I did some reading and found that Samba provides NetBIOS functionality that allows the machines to resolve host names without a DNS. Since I'm not running a local DNS, I decided to reinstall Samba. Unfortunately, I've not been able to restore it to full working condition. I don't want to use hosts files as all the IP addresses are assigned automatically by DHCP. I want to be able to access the Windows machine by name.

Ubuntu Networking :: Why Is The Internet Lousy - But Fine In Windows

Oct 17, 2010

i have wubi, and xp. i keep getting the bsod in windows, so until i take the time to troubleshoot, i will not be using it. something with drivers. . . i noticed quickset and intel proset wireless were having driver issues then this happened.

anyway--when i am using ubuntu, the wireless connection frequently drops. rarely happened in windows. i found i have to disable then enable connections to get it to work. sometimes it will stay connected 30 seconds, sometimes a few hours. plus, when it is connected, it runs much slower (like 5 minute videos videos get stuck). i am currently using chromium but it happens with firefox and opera as well.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Can't Connect To WEP Network, WPA Works Fine?

Sep 2, 2011

I am unable to connect to a WEP-protected network. the Network manager log shows either a DHCP timeout, or a failure to associate. (attached below).Changing to WPA is not an option, as the network is not controlled by me. This is with the rt61pci driver for a Ralink 2500 series chipset.(Rosewill RNX-G300EX card)Manually forcing an IP does not result in a connection either. This is with the latest OpenSuSE 11.4, all patches applied. Router is a D-Link DIR-613, and I know the passphrase I'm using is correct because it connects both on my Android (what else?) phone, and my lappy when I boot XP.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Networking - Connection Works But No Internet

Jun 1, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.

Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.

The output of some terminal commands are below.

Hosts.allow and hosts.deny are both fine (not blank but no entries)

I'm using 11.2 with KDE.

I can connect to the Internet on my WLAN just fine (using Opera) and can dload torrent files (using the same).

However, I have had trouble accessing some community repositories in the past, cannot synchronise with an NTP server (annoying since my battery is low and time and date are reset most reboots) and cannot use the lyrics function or Wikipedia function in Amarok. Nor can I connect to the net using Firefox (though conqueror works just fine...) I cannot download torrents on KTorrent either.

It seems that there is some sort of 'permission'/connectivity issue.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: IFUP Woes And Grief (set Up Looks Fine And Works But Won't Auto-connect)

Apr 28, 2011

I am running my wifi using YAST and IFUP. The card is a zd1211, and works just fine. However lately I have have to "start" it manually after booting. The only way I have found to do this is to open YAST >network settings> and "edit" the card, but NOT change anything, just click through the next buttons and it connects. I have tried using the settings "on boot" and "on hotpug" but always when I reboot, I have to go through the YAST rigmarole. This is a PITA. I am trying to avoid NM as I want to sort this out, not cover it up with more software.

Ubuntu Networking :: GRE 47 Not Received While It Works Fine On Xp?

Oct 5, 2010

This has been bugging me for quite a long time. I need to have a pptp connection to my university. I have tried to locate the error, but this has been a real trouble.

A little bit of history: My girlfriend had a laptop with M$ vista on it with a working PPTP connection. I had a laptop with Ubuntu, with which I couldn't get the PPTP working.

When my laptop crashed, I bought a new one on which I run a dual boot XP SP3 and Ubuntu. I also own a desktop (Dual M$ Win 7 / Ubuntu standard Karmic) and my girfriend also upgraded to Win 7.

Currently, the XP version is the only one on which I can get a connection. Both Ubuntu and the Win 7's give me a GRE proc 47 not received error. I know our router (a DAVOLINK DV2020) is notorious for not sending through GRE proc 47, but this either shouldn't be the case or it shouldn't matter, since I can make a perfect connection through the XP OS.

This is quite a handicap, since we both study at the university for which we require working VPN PPTP connections.
