Ubuntu Networking :: Home Server Connecting To VPN?
Jun 3, 2011
I have a home server that I have setup to connect to via SSH. All is working well with that. I would like to have the home server access the internet through a VPN. However, if I do this, I am no longer able to connect to the server via SSH, even though I know what its IP address is.

Is it possible to SSH to a remote computer from within an SSH session? I'm connecting to my home server via SSH, and trying to connect out to my VPS. I know the key.ppk file works, as I can use it to connect directly from my PC. The output I'm getting is shown below:
Code:
# ssh -i key.ppk -v -l myuser myuser@domain.co.uk
(tried various ways of doing this)
Code:
OpenSSH_4.6p1 Debian-5ubuntu0.1, OpenSSL 0.9.8g 19 Oct 2007
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
debug1: Applying options for *
debug1: Connecting to mydomain.co.uk [123.456.789.012] port 22.
debug1: Connection established.
debug1: permanently_set_uid: 0/0 .....
debug1: PEM_read_PrivateKey failed
debug1: read PEM private key done: type <unknown>
debug1: No more authentication methods to try.
Permission denied (publickey).
There's nothing I can see in the auth.log file on the VPS.

I recently switched a computer running PCLinuxOS over to Fedora 12. I used to have PCLinuxOS set up as an SSH server so that I could quickly and easily share files with other computers in the house. Since the switch, other computers cannot connect to the SSH server unless I use sudo. I cannot set up a network connection in the GUI; "Unable to connect to server. Please check your settings and try again". Same thing happens if I use the ssh command without sudo. Is Fedora blocking something?

I have a beefy Win Box desktop that i'm using as a media server and i have a home network setup already using windows xp. I had everything running fine and the PC connects flawlessly to my Bravia TV and both my ps3's so i know the network and sharing settings are setup just fine. Anyways i got tired of all the Windows 7 BS and decided i would once again use Ubuntu on my Toshiba netbook. So the question is how in the heck do i get my Ubuntu netbook to connect to the Desktop? I've tried browsing the fourms but either i'm missing something of just a little slow. What "extensions" would i need to get and how would i go about implementing it from there?

I might as well start off by saying that I have the Linux-based Linksys WRT54GL router running the Tomato firmware. I've come up with an idea that I'm not sure is possible. Specifically, setting a router up to ban not by the MAC address of the network card, but by the operating system the machine itself is running.
This way someone could have, say, a laptop dual-booting Windows and Linux and would be unable to access the internal network if they are in Windows. However, if they reboot into Linux (or practically any other OS) they would be able to access the local network safely without the chance of spreading worms and whatever else garbage across the internal network. Similarly, other devices like Xbox 360s, Wiis, etc. would be unaffected since they don't run Windows. [Yes, 360 probably runs some highly modified NT kernel, but almost nothing else is similar to a Windows PC and the whole system is highly locked down by Microsoft, so I'd say it could be an exception.]
I was thinking of specifically banning Windows XP and lower (honestly as f***ed up as I've seen Vista and 7 get, I would consider banning those too...). The idea is to allow, well... everything that isn't Windows (except possibly Win7) to connect wirelessly to the local network.
Unfortunately, I cannot do anything like this just yet, and I'm in the planning stages, trying to figure out if it is even possible. There are unfortunately two computers in the house that aren't mine (one running Windows XP and another Windows 7... go figure, they came with it and either my sister refuses to use anything else or my mom's computer's wireless is a massive PITA to get to work in anything *besides* Windows). My guess is that this is either not possible or would be extremely hard to pull off. What do you guys think?
On the other hand, it would probably be possible to connect two routers to the incoming cable connection, giving them both different settings (SSIDs, WPA passwords, etc.) and only giving Windows users access to the outer router, but it'd be cool to be able to accomplish something like this with one router through its settings.

Currently my office use a Cisco Firewall which will only allow the ANYCONNECT utility to do the vpn connection. I found a Linux utility (OpenConnect) which will do the same thing, but allow me more flexibility with my networking needs. What I ultimately would like to have is to have a switch that I can connect any network device into it and be connected to the office. IE (my IP Work Phone and Computer) Currently I have is a computer with fedora 13 and two network cards eth0 (home network - connected to a router) and eth1 which I would like to connect a switch to. OpenConnect communicates fine and I can see the work network from the Fedora machine. It creates a vpn0 tun/tap device and I don't know how to pass communication to/from the eth1 device.
Do I try to iptables the ports for the phone and services I need on the computer? Or do I build bridge; and If I do what am I bridging. I have tried making a bridge from eth1 to vpn0 which reply's with unsupported device or something like that.Unfortunately my network skills are bit limited and my office says "it can't be done". Their solution is for me to buy a ASA5505 (or something device) and have a static IP. I would have to make it work as my router and even then it will only DHCP 10 ip addresses; which will cause a shortage of IP addresses in the house.

I am having problems connecting to my VNC server. The host machine is running fedora core 15.
In the past I have been able to connect to the machine, but for some I no longer can't.
I have done the following but still am unsure what problem is
1. Verfied the VNC server is running
2. Verified my user "trb" is in the vnc users list
3. I have checked that my port is open (at least i think). i launched a terminal and did "telnet 127.0.0.1 5902" and successfully connected.
My vncservers config file which is located in /etc/sysconfig/vncservers

I've been experiencing some home web-server slowdown issues lately, and I wanted to see if it's a problem with the server itself. I'm not sure if this might be the problem, but upon checking netstat -tn, I see over 15 instances of the following:

I have setup an ubuntu gateway server by using four NIC cards.
eth0 :210.212.235.107 is connected to the internet
eth1 :192.168.1.222 is connected to the local network
eth2 :192.168.2.222 is connected to another network
Here 192.168.1.222 is the gateway for 192.168.1.0 network and 192.168.2.222 is the gateway for 192.168.2.0 network. These network configurations are working fine, but i want to block inter network communication ie from 192.168.1.0 network to 192.168.2.0 network,i want to block the communication for securing the local networks more.I know iptable rule is enough for this purpose .But i cant find the apt rule for this purpose.

I just installed Ubuntu server edition on to an old Dell desktop. The only problem is that I can't get the Internet to work. I have tried the following and I guess it doesn't work:
Code:
sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.52/24 up
sudo route add default gw 192.168.1.1
Each of those commands don't give me any error and it would seem like everything works fine, until I try to ping google or any website and I get an error that tells me that no host was found. I am using version 10.04 of Ubuntu server.

I'd document here the way to get to eDesktop through linux (debian, ubuntu) at the University of West Florida (UWF), since they appear to only support Windows through their documentation on the University web site, and the link through Argus (the secure web site) doesn't work in Linux. This is sometimes needed to use the University resources (libraries and computer programs) from remote locations, and otherwise a google search is fruitless. I had to have a guy in the computer science department show me how to do it. This may apply for other Universities with similar setups. It was impossible for me to figure it out on my own, I had to go back to my old 9.04 partition to get the info...
1) Open Terminal Server Client (Applications>Internet>...)
2) Insert as follows:
Code:
Computer: eDesktop.uwf.edu
Protocol: RDP
User Name: YOUR USERNAME
[code]...
3) OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED click Save As and save it as a quick connect so you don't have to refer to this again.
4) Flip through the other tabs and configure as desired, and click Connect!

as a personal project for this weekend I told myself I was going to finally get my home FTP server set up and running; not a hard task (I assumed) but one that I had been putting off for a while. Now to the nitty gritty details installed vsftpd, editted the config file to what it is now (Below) Anonymous users are disabled, local is enabled, port is set to 21, restricted to home folder, made an exception in gufw's firewall config. Went to my router, (its a dlink DIR-628), just so happens there is a nice "Virtual Server" section, specifically for home webserver / ftp's.
Public Port: 21
Private Port: 0 (Default)
Name: FTP
Internal IP (That everything should be sending to) 192.168.0.198
Protocol: TCP

We have a mac book connected to our network. It can surf the web and even get into our network files. However, these network files are on linux, and finding the open files (not password protected) is fine. But we need the mac book to get into the protected files to edit our media. When we connect to the linux server, there is a pop-up asking for a login. We enter the correct credentials that work for everyone else to get into our protected files, but these credentials don't work... There is a message that pops up: "This operation cannot be completed because the original file '<file_name_here>' cannot be found." But it found the other open files...? what do we do to get this to work? The macbook is 'os x' and the linux server is 'fedora 10'

I have the following setup: An ADSL Router (192.168.4.1) which plugs into my server (that has 2 network cards) Server(eth0-connecting to the ADSL Router) = 192.168.4.2 Server(eth1-connecting to the windows XP PC) = 192.168.4.3 And the windows XP PC = 192.168.4.4 if I delete the entire routing table and add a default route route add default gw 192.168.4.1 dev eth0 I get an error (I can't remember the error, the PC's at work) however if I unplug the cable going from the PC to eth1, I can then successfully add the default route, and I can ping the router, however when I reconnect the cable to the PC and Server... I can still ping the router (from the server) but I cannot ping the PC
if I try and add another route such as: route add -net 192.168.4.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.4.4 it wont let me add the rule I have a feeling i am doing something really stupid here with the addressing scheme,

I want to use centos as a developer server on my desktop before deploying my stuff to the internet.
I have a netgear DG834G router. It's IP address on my local network is 192.168.0.1 and connected to the adsl line. The router is set up to act as an dhcp server too. On the router I have reserved ip address for the nics per their mac addresses.
My server is on a dual boot desktop. The other boot is XP and works fine, picks up dhcp.
I don't know how to connect Centos to the router.
I have tried to play with the network manager but to no avail.
I can ping localhost, interface eth0 is there, but i can't ping to the router.
I have set the manager system/administration/network to get dhcp automatically.
I can't activate the eth0 although the hardware device says it is OK.
I've looked at firewall and iptalbes.

I'm trying to connect to a data server (basically a big hard drive) in my lab with my computer. On the Mac that's at the workbench next to me, you enter Go -> Connect to Server. From there, enter the IP address that I have (I can't find a server name--just the IP.). It asks you which subsystem you want, queries you for a user name & password, and then opens a window with all the files. Meanwhile, on my Ubuntu machine, I have a "Connect to Server" option under "Places" on my main menu. But when I choose that, I need to select what kind of server it is, from several options that don't seem right. (It's not FTP, it's not SSH, it's not a form of HTTP, and that leaves "Windows share?") I've tried several things, but usually get back 'Cannot display location "smb://<IP-ADDRESS>/" The specified location is not mounted'. I've tried many ways of mounting this drive, but it usually gives me permission denied errors (even though I *know* I have the right login and password--I've logged in using the aforementioned Mac).

I'm having a bizarre problem with FTP transfers from my CentOS 5.3 boxes, All of my CentOS boxes appear to be limited at ~10kb/s when connecting to any FTP server outside of our network. We have no network infrastructure which would cause this, however when I use a windows based machine it is able to connect fine.
I took my laptop running Vista, and rebooted it onto a CentOS 5.3 LiveCD, and same issue.
I have checked our iptables, cleared the rules, removed the kernel modules, checked CBQ/TC it looks like nothing is limiting this. Also, other protocols work fine. Both the windows and linux boxes used passive transfers for it.
Is there anything other than iptables/CBQ which would be on a out of the box install of CentOS I should check? Is there any kernel settings for NAT connections which may cause this?
