Networking :: Connecting Mac Book To Fedora Server?

May 9, 2011

We have a mac book connected to our network. It can surf the web and even get into our network files. However, these network files are on linux, and finding the open files (not password protected) is fine. But we need the mac book to get into the protected files to edit our media. When we connect to the linux server, there is a pop-up asking for a login. We enter the correct credentials that work for everyone else to get into our protected files, but these credentials don't work... There is a message that pops up: "This operation cannot be completed because the original file '<file_name_here>' cannot be found." But it found the other open files...? what do we do to get this to work? The macbook is 'os x' and the linux server is 'fedora 10'

Fedora Networking :: 10 - Nfs-utils Update - Waits For A While At Leopard's - Connecting To Server - Dialog Box

Jan 15, 2009

I ran a yum update this morning on my Fedora 10 box (i386), which updated the 'nfs-utils' package from 1.1.4-4.fc10 to 1.1.4-6.fc10. Before the update I was able to connect to the fedora NFS exports just fine from my Macbook Pro running latest version of Leopard on a simple home network. After the update, when I try to connect to the NFS export it waits for a while at leopard's "Connecting to Server" dialog box, and after about a minute I get a message saying "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct" (though my UID's are the same on both systems). My /etc/exports and /etc/sysconfig/nfs files were unchanged by the update. I tried restarting the nfs services as well as shutting down iptables and setting SELinux to permissive, etc. with no success.

I get the following in /var/log/messages (192.168.1.102 is the address of my macbook):

I was able to download the RPM for the older version of nfs-utils and then do a 'yum localinstall' to revert to the older version. This fixed my issues completely and my setup works as it did before. However I am curious to know why the latest version of nfs-utils breaks my setup, and whether it is a problem with my setup or if I should just wait for the next version to come out and see if the same thing happens.

Here is my /etc/exports file. If I understand this correctly it should allow connections from anyone with an IP address on my local network.

Ubuntu :: Location Of X Display

Apr 20, 2010

On Ubuntu (as with 99% of other Linux distros), CTRL-ALT-F7 brings you to your X display on tty7 (:0)...is there any way for me to get the display to appear on tty2 or tty3 instead of 7?

I ask because my ubuntu box is a media server running XBMC. XBMC has some 'flaws'...one of which is screen refreshing during certain tasks (other than watching a video)...the easiest way to get it to kick back into gear is to switch to a terminal, then back to the X display...not that big of a deal really..but the problem lies in the fact that the remote I use for the computer (simple USB IR Remote grabbed off of eBay) has buttons programmed for CTRL-ALT-F[1,2,3,4]. So, if I could get X to appear in CTRL-ALT-F2 for instance, I could easily switch back and forth without having to get up to walk to the keyboard.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Mount Location; Failed To Retrieve Share List From Server

Oct 18, 2010

My network was running happily with no problems. After clicking "Places," then "Network," I double-clicked "Windows Network." My wife's laptop appeared merrily ready to be clicked. I browsed through and accessed the "Public" folder. Ubuntu auto-mounted the "Public" folder on the Windows Vista machine to the desktop.

THE REASON:I wanted to change the icon to a disk so it would mimic a "mapped" drive like in Windows. I right-clicked the shared folder mounted on the desktop, clicked "Properties," and then clicked the picture of the folder. I then clicked through to "/usr/share/icons/Human/scalable/devices" and selected the "drive-harddisk.svg" icon. The icon changed and I could still browse. I unmounted and re-mounted the folder with no problems, then changed back the disk to the regular folder icon.

THE PROBLEM: After restarting the computer, if I click "Places," then "Network," then double-click "Windows Network," I'm greeted with the following error message: Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server.

WORKAROUND: Opening Firefox and typing smb://IP-of-wife's-laptop shows the share list. I can open and access the "Public" folder no problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Mount Location - Failed To Retrieve Share List From Server

Sep 1, 2011

It seems this is a common problem. I used Samba to configure and connect the computer running Ubuntu 11.04 with my Windows Visa workgroup. This is a wired, not wireless, connection.

In Ubuntu, under Network, I can see the name of the other computer (NOVA_MORAI), but when I click, I get the error:

Unable to mount location - Failed to retrieve share list from server

I tried the nmblookup command, here is the output:

eleos@Planet-Morai:~$ nmblookup NOVA_MORAI
querying NOVA_MORAI on 192.168.1.255
192.168.1.2 NOVA_MORAI<00>
And:
eleos@Planet-Morai:~$ nmblookup -A 192.168.1.2

[Code]....

There it it. But when I try the findsmb command, it does not show up.

The error message seems common, but I have been trying solutions all day, and I am still not getting a connection.

I can still ping the router (from the server) but I cannot ping the PC

CentOS 5 Networking :: Connecting Server 5.3 To DSL Router?

Sep 3, 2009

I want to use centos as a developer server on my desktop before deploying my stuff to the internet.

I have a netgear DG834G router. It's IP address on my local network is 192.168.0.1 and connected to the adsl line. The router is set up to act as an dhcp server too. On the router I have reserved ip address for the nics per their mac addresses.

My server is on a dual boot desktop. The other boot is XP and works fine, picks up dhcp.

I don't know how to connect Centos to the router.

I have tried to play with the network manager but to no avail.

I can ping localhost, interface eth0 is there, but i can't ping to the router.

I have set the manager system/administration/network to get dhcp automatically.

I can't activate the eth0 although the hardware device says it is OK.

I've looked at firewall and iptalbes.

Networking :: Connecting To Local Network Data Server?

Jul 1, 2010

I'm trying to connect to a data server (basically a big hard drive) in my lab with my computer. On the Mac that's at the workbench next to me, you enter Go -> Connect to Server. From there, enter the IP address that I have (I can't find a server name--just the IP.). It asks you which subsystem you want, queries you for a user name & password, and then opens a window with all the files. Meanwhile, on my Ubuntu machine, I have a "Connect to Server" option under "Places" on my main menu. But when I choose that, I need to select what kind of server it is, from several options that don't seem right. (It's not FTP, it's not SSH, it's not a form of HTTP, and that leaves "Windows share?") I've tried several things, but usually get back 'Cannot display location "smb://<IP-ADDRESS>/" The specified location is not mounted'. I've tried many ways of mounting this drive, but it usually gives me permission denied errors (even though I *know* I have the right login and password--I've logged in using the aforementioned Mac).
