Ubuntu Networking :: Hardy: No Network On Boot

View 6 RepliesI've had issues with the later versions of Ubuntu, so in an effort to road-test Firefox 3.5 on Hardy I'd like to change my Karmic/Hardy dual boot to a Hardy/Hardy dual boot, and follow the instructions in [URL] to put the Mozilla build of 3.5 on the new installation.
I can't see any reason why a Hardy/Hardy dual-boot shouldn't work, but does anyone know of any issues with this I might not be aware of?
I am running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), Kernel 2.6.24-24. Because everything is working fine, I would be very reluctant to upgrade to 8.10 or later. However I now have a need to use a Mobile Broadband USB connection to the Internet. I understand that this requires Network Manager 7.something or later.
I got the network-manager (0.8-1) binary from debian. Anyone got any experience of whether I should be able to install it succesfully? I thought I would ask before wrecking my system. (Synaptic seems to only allow me version 0.6.6)
I have been using Hardy for about 3yrs now and using dialup to connect to the internet. I have a 64bit ASUS with a nVidia ethernet interface........I have just recently switched to cable broadband with a wired connection direct to the eth0 port. I have another computer running puppy linux in which the broadband works. hence this is how I am typing this now. I have connected my ubuntu machine to the cable and the network admin shows a wired connection but will not let me browse on the net with any browser. Not really sure how I got puppy to find it, but it did.
I have used the network manager on both machines with one connecting and the other not. I know there a newer ubuntu's out but I really do like Hardy and want to keep it, but without internet connection other than dialup it seems a bit lame. I am not above using command line options as I use wodim and wget all the time, so my question is.
using Hardy Heron on a old Thinkpad T41.This is a fresh install system and I noticed it kept dropping wireless connection. After google around, seems like this is a common problem? Then I switched to wired network, and turned out the same thing happens again. Looks like doesn't matter wired or wireless, it kept dropping itself from time to time.
fter checking syslog, I found something interesting...it kept complain eth0 is invalid, then it said it found a better connection?I found that extremely weird..
Code:
Apr 30 06:24:32 support kernel: [ 961.236895] e1000: eth0: e1000_clean_tx_irq: Detected Tx Unit Hang
[code]...
So I just finished doing a Hardy based LiveCD. I made an installation in VirtualBox, installed some packages, and then compiled a totally new kernel, 2.6.35, actually this one: [URL] I compiled squashfs support in the kernel naturally Everything seems to be fine, the system boots up normally etc. But here comes the trouble: I make the iso file with remasterys (2.0.12-latest for Hardy) but this iso isn't able to boot.
It drops to busybox shell, casper.log says: /init: 1 /dev/sr0: no such file or directory Unable to find medium with the livesystem. My /dev folder is totally empty, it contains only the shells (8 pieces of tty). I don't know what's wrong...my rootfs is surely mounted, mount shows rootfs rw /
I have Hardy Heron 8.04 already on my comp and loving it, however I would also like to have Windows xp on as well, I try to install but get nothing, just directed to the sign in page for linux.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running Hardy and XP in a dual boot setup. I want to install Lucid but don't want to overwrite my working Hardy partition and am worried by the number of reported problems with Grub2. XP is currently taking up all of my first hard drive. Second hard drive is : Hardy, then swap, then separate /home. After a bit of research, does this sound like a good plan ? ...
- Use gparted from the Live CD to shrink my Windows partition (then make sure XP still boots OK )
- Create a new partition after XP on drive 1
- Install Lucid in this new partition, using Advanced option, and tell it use my existing swap and home partitions on drive 2 (with no format, of course)
- Write Grub to this new partition
- Boot Hardy, and edit grub manually ( or use StartUp Manager, will it detect Lucid and add it as an option ? )
- Reboot and get options for Hardy, XP, and Lucid.
Does that sound correct, especially the Grub bits? When I'm happy that Lucid is OK I'll probably install Grub from it to the MBR.
I've just had a phone call from an 8.04/win xp duel boot user who has lost the boot entry to xp after a 8.04 update. I guessed at a system upgrade but she checked and is still on Hardy. They write and only have the xp for printing as there is no Linux support for the cannon printer. Using the printer is important. I've said I'll pop round and try to sort it out. Any ideas how I can do this. Update grub in recovery mode maybe or if I need the command line what should I try? I'd like to know before calling as though I'm not quite a novice this isn't a problem I've had to cope with since grub 2 beta ( didn't solve it then either an am still using 9.04 ). Hacking legacy will be new to me. As this is a writers machine with all her work on it I'd regard it as a critical pc, don't want to mess things up for her.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been running Ubuntu for a few years now and this is the first time in a while that I've been really stumped. My power went out earlier today. Of course my Ubuntu box was on, so it had a hard shutdown. When it booted back up upon power coming back on, it went to the normal Ubuntu startup screen with the orange progress bar, but stopped about halfway through. It then goes to a black screen, with a continuous stream of y's scrolling down the left of the screen. Like this:
[Code]....
So, I try selecting other sessions (Ctrl-Alt-F1, F2, etc) and only get anything from F1, where it says "Starting Up... <cr> Loading, please wait..." I then reboot into recovery mode and get the same continuous y's. However, now when I press Ctrl-Alt-Del, I get the Recovery Menu, which lets me into a root shell. Below is my fdisk -l output.

just installed hardy after I removed Maverick since it doesn't support my ati graphics. I installed it inside my windows xp pro and run smoothly after installation, added couple of widgets and so on... after I restarted it the next time, a balloon showed on top saying 113 or so updates are available, so I updated it.
After update I reboot my lappy and it won't get to my ubuntu anymore but works fine with my xp. I tried several searches on the net to find the solution but can't really figure it out. I just tried running Boot info script as it might help experts figure out what's wrong with my box and here's what it shows:

I've just had to reinstall WinXP on a Dell Inspiron 1501. An ideal opportunity to try out Ubuntu. First I tried a WinXP/Hardy Heron dual boot - all seems okay. Next WinXP/Karmic dual boot - all seems okay. Then, why not, WinXP/Hardy/Karmic triple boot - all seems okay. Playing with each OS I noticed that Hardy had a couple of update notifications. So I opened Update Manager, went on-line, hit [Check] and was informed that there were 200+ Important Security Updates - I installed these. Better check Karmic too - similar story, installed 200+ updates. Everything still seems okay in WinXP, Hardy and Karmic. However, I've just noticed that the Grub2 boot menu now displays eight "Ubuntu" lines, as opposed to the four lines I had originally
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic

I have a system running a very basic LTS install (10.04). Ubuntu has been setup with very little additional packages. No GUI. Once it's booted to a prompt for the first time I add the following packages,
cups cupsys ssh pi memtester nfs-common
aptitude safe-upgrade
At this time I don't have additional information on exactly what packages are installed. I did not perform the installs myself. I will update this thread when I get more details from my IT counterpart on how the system was setup.
This is used for a headless(no monitor, no keyboard) system running some custom applications.
Here are two problems.
1. If I plug into an ethernet network after I boot, the network never connects. I need to reboot with the network connected in order to get an IP. What is the service to "auto connect" to a network?
2. I have a network printer configured on lpd called myprinter. If I am connected to the network when I boot, I can print to this printer just fine using:
Code:
However, If I boot disconnected from the network and print to myprinter, the jobs obviously cannot print. They get spooled. Using 'lpstat -t' I can see that the spooled print jobs are assigned a job number and that myprinter is trying to connect. I shutdown, reconnect my ethernet network and boot up. All my printer configuration is blown away.
/etc/cups/printers.conf has been wiped out to look like this:
Code:
My 'good' printer configuration is copied to printers.conf.O
To recover from this, I need to stop cups, copy printers.conf.O to printers.conf, restart cups, and re-setup my network printer.
So, What causes my printers to get wiped out? I've repeated this on 4 systems with the same setup.
I configured my Xubuntu laptop to work with my Netgear Wireless router to connect to the Internet. I was able to connect, and downloaded Hardy updates of 184 MB. After installation of the updates, the system prompted me to restart. The Wireless network is not working since then. Tried reconfiguring, but to no avail. The proprietary drivers for my wireless network card have been downloaded and installed... remember, it worked well enough download the updates! Posting this from my Windows partition using the same wireless network A previous thread [URL]...k+Hardy+update) with the same issue seems to have hit a roadblock...
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter days of trying to get a TL-WN321G usb driver to install in Hardy Heron, it finally arrived in the proper place. In trying to then set it up, I got as far as enabling roaming mode, and the icon showed that the system had made a connection to my Belkin-ASDL-G router. I launched Firefox, which momentarily showed Google home page(where I'd been last when using a wired lan), then it changed to "Server not found".
I've tried rebooting several times, but it remains the same. Each time the dongle led lights up, the icon shows it trying to make a connection to the correct network, but it fails to do so.
On another pc on this network, I looked in the router settings for DHCP client list, and this client has now vanished from the list where it had been showing before. Possible complications may come from a setting in the client list that still shows up with the same host name, generated by an earlier attempt with a different usb dongle.
So two questions - do I need to find out how to remove the old client first, if so how ? And secondly, does anyone recognize the symptoms and can offer a solution ?
I am having trouble setting up FamilyShield on an Ubuntu 8.04 system. The setup instructions on this (opendns.com) site are for newer versions of Ubuntu. Network Manager settings are different in 8.04 and don't correspond to the instructions. However, given the age of this computer, it cannot run a newer version of Ubuntu, and 8.04 is an LTS supported until 2011,
Complicating matters is I am living as a guest, so do not have the option of setting FamilyShield on the router. It must be done on my computer.
Here's what I've tried:
System->Administration->Network
go to DNS Tab and add the FamilyShield DNS numbers. BTW, there are two DNS numbers from the internet owner's ISP (Roadrunner) automatically in here already, along with "socal.rr.com" in the Search Domains field. If I try to delete them, they reappear when I reboot. If I add FamilyShield DNS numbers here, either along with, or in place of the ones that automatically appear here, they do not take, and on next boot FamilyShield DNS numbers are gone, but "socal.rr.com" DNS and search domains reappear.
I've also tried:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.com
and added following line at the end:
Code:
prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.123,208.67.220.123
When I reboot the system, I'm still using the assigned DNS numbers from "socal.rr.com".
I was able to try a newer version of Ubuntu (on a different machine) on this network, and it worked fine with the setup instructions. So this appears to be a problem specific to how Ubuntu version 8.04 handles DNS number changes.
I am running hardy on my laptop and was thinking its time I upgraded. One thing that's been holding me back is I have a number of wifi keys stored in there somewhere and can't remember what they were exactly. Are they exportable?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been experiencing a really strange issue regarding networking. I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 for use as a server/media box, which is connected via HDMI to a TV. Everything seems to be working fine, but there's one peculiarity: the machine doesn't connect to the network (so I can't SSH to it or anything) until it loads on the HDMI display. While it's not a big deal to turn on the HDMI display and wait for Ubuntu to show GDM, I was wondering if anyone knows why I'd have to start up GDM for the machine to connect to the network, and if there's a way to fix it.
I did notice after unplugging the HDMI cable and rebooting that networking started without any trouble after boot. But it's also not very convenient to have to unplug the HDMI cable every time booting!
Not sure if it's relevant, but the graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4350, and I'm using the binary ATI driver (otherwise HDMI doesn't work).
I have a new install and I am quite surprised it just misses networking. That is, NO networking. ifconfig comes up with inly lo. Nothing else, most primal. It should use dhcp to connect, bit it fails to create the eth0 interface. Such a fundamental flaw is one I can't work on. Forget looking in network manager in the desktop, that's still being installed, I've checked the basic files in etc against karmic.

I have two machines running ubuntu connected through a BiPAC 7401VGPR3 (Billion modem/router). One is a new notebook running Ubuntu 11.04 and the other desktop computer is running 10.04 connected to the printer and external hdd.
I can't find the right documentation to network them so that I can share HDD, printers, devices, etc. I can't get either computer to see each other via network searches.
Also may need to boot into Windows from time to time and access the network from there.
Since this morning I cannot get any network connection working from regular boot up. I'm beyond frustrated.I booted into windows xp for the first time in at least a year today and connected fine.I booted into recovery mode -> then failsafe graphics mode , two times and had internet one of the times.I'm writing this from live cd.I have a feeling it is something super simple to fix but ...Here is my ifconfig -a from regular(not working network boot)

I have a headless machine set up on my LAN which is dual boot, Ubuntu 10.04 SE and Windows. I have a printer attached to it. (HP Deskjet D1500 series) I also have a shared folder located on the machine.
Through SMB I've been able to recreate the share in Ubuntu to point to the share on Windows. When the machine is in either OS, the share can be resolved, browsed, edited, etc, from \hostsharename. Through SMB I've also been able to share a printer attached to the machine (and print to it). I have a problem though:
When the machine is in either OS, it is possible to use the same scheme to access the shared directory. This is not true with the printer. When in Windows: My Windows 7 x64 machine can connect to the printer, look for drivers, and when it doesn't find drivers in \hostprint$, it uses its own. My W7x64 machine can print a test page, and any other pages for that matter. My W7x64 machine lists the printer as "HP Deskjet D1500 series" I do not have to re-add the printer.
When in Ubuntu:I have to re-add the printer to my W7x64 machine. I have to specify the driver to use, regardless of whether I use the same print$ directory. Re-adding the printer gives me a network printer by the name of the printer, not the description (e.g. "HP Deskjet D1500 series")
My goal is to mimic the transparency of the shared directory, so whereas I've created a shared directory in Windows that persists between OSs, I want to create the network printer to persist across OSs. I can print to the printer in either OS, but the "printer" I have when the dual boot machine is in Ubuntu is NOT the "printer" I have when it's in Windows.
I need to accomplish this to avoid booting the machine into Windows for a client to print something. It seems very odd that I can make Apache, PHP, MySQL, shares, and common files persist/be identical between OSs, but not network printers. I've worked this for a few days now, exhausting what I can in information on SMB and CUPS to no avail. I am exhausted myself.
I would like to stop network manager from starting up on boot. I have tried moving
Code:
/etc/init.d/network-manager stop
to rc.local and it did nothing but boot me into the CLI
I have also tried to put
Code:
sudo service network-manager stop and that did nothing also.
After I get network manager to stop on boot up. How do I make it so it will not auto connect to networks? My computer keeps on joining a different network on boot up. And I don't like this as some times I go to my banks website and I am on there network with out realizing it (because of the auto connect) Is there a way to stop this also?
