Dec 25, 2010I have Ubuntu 10.10 but I can only use Windows 7 now (I hate it). Here's why: when I go to the boot screen and I am given the choice of using Windows 7 or Ubuntu and I select Ubuntu, the screen goes black and says:
error: unknown command 'loadfont' error: file not found
Then I have to reset my laptop and use Windows 7. This happened when I was using Ubuntu like I usually did and I downloaded recommended updates from Ubuntu. I downloaded them and I was asked to reset my laptop for it to be effective. I did and when the boot screen came up it said what it says above. I can't even get to the login screen. I've been searching everywhere for an answer.

Feb 9, 2011I am currently running a 64-bit Fedora 14 server which hosts a game server, a voice server, and remote desktop functionality, each on a distinct TCP port. I am currently using the built-in firewall to deny all traffic other than ICMP ping/pong and TCP traffic on those specific ports.I am looking for a graphical application which will let me monitor any connections being made to my server in order to keep an eye out for possible security concerns. To be more specific, I'd like to be able to see the source IP addresses, TCP/UDP ports, and individual bandwidth in use by external connections being made to the server, along with any other information that might be helpful in identifying a possible intrusion attempt.

Oct 5, 2010I have a system running a very basic LTS install (10.04). Ubuntu has been setup with very little additional packages. No GUI. Once it's booted to a prompt for the first time I add the following packages,
cups cupsys ssh pi memtester nfs-common
aptitude safe-upgrade
At this time I don't have additional information on exactly what packages are installed. I did not perform the installs myself. I will update this thread when I get more details from my IT counterpart on how the system was setup.
This is used for a headless(no monitor, no keyboard) system running some custom applications.
Here are two problems.
1. If I plug into an ethernet network after I boot, the network never connects. I need to reboot with the network connected in order to get an IP. What is the service to "auto connect" to a network?
2. I have a network printer configured on lpd called myprinter. If I am connected to the network when I boot, I can print to this printer just fine using:

However, If I boot disconnected from the network and print to myprinter, the jobs obviously cannot print. They get spooled. Using 'lpstat -t' I can see that the spooled print jobs are assigned a job number and that myprinter is trying to connect. I shutdown, reconnect my ethernet network and boot up. All my printer configuration is blown away.
/etc/cups/printers.conf has been wiped out to look like this:

My 'good' printer configuration is copied to printers.conf.O
To recover from this, I need to stop cups, copy printers.conf.O to printers.conf, restart cups, and re-setup my network printer.
So, What causes my printers to get wiped out? I've repeated this on 4 systems with the same setup.

Nov 7, 2009I have recently bought a IP/PABX system with one FXO and one FXS port. I intend to install this on a remote site with a public but dynamic IP (can be resolved via dyndns though) and make calls via clients that are NATTed (inside a home router). I would like to seek advice on the port opening and the recommended settings. I have been reading a lot on VOIP and I am getting feedback that SIP calls are difficult to establish on a NATTed environment.
1.) SIP port 5060 UDP?
2.) RTP ports - what range should I open for this? I see some use 10000-20000 UDP
3.) STUN server - Is this something that needs to be configured?
How can I ensure that the other party can hear the audio just like a regular telephone? Is it really impossible to do if the client is behind a router in which it is using a Private IP Address? What other network configurations needs to be done?

May 10, 2010Loaded Ubuntu 10.4lucid on TransPort NX Mobile Pentium II, 328MiB,Using Netgear Rangemax wn511b. with Broadcom STA wirless driver. bcm43gx.Boot computer and network manager shos "no network devices available" Run system/administration/hardware drivers and the Broadcom STA driver shows up (only one that shows up) REMOVE and then ACTIVATE and the network manager sees it and connects fine. Shut down computer, restart and no device. I am forced to Remove and Activate each time I start the computer.Is there a way to set this driver to be found and run at computer start.

Jan 15, 2010I've been experiencing a really strange issue regarding networking. I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 for use as a server/media box, which is connected via HDMI to a TV. Everything seems to be working fine, but there's one peculiarity: the machine doesn't connect to the network (so I can't SSH to it or anything) until it loads on the HDMI display. While it's not a big deal to turn on the HDMI display and wait for Ubuntu to show GDM, I was wondering if anyone knows why I'd have to start up GDM for the machine to connect to the network, and if there's a way to fix it.
I did notice after unplugging the HDMI cable and rebooting that networking started without any trouble after boot. But it's also not very convenient to have to unplug the HDMI cable every time booting!
Not sure if it's relevant, but the graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4350, and I'm using the binary ATI driver (otherwise HDMI doesn't work).

May 6, 2010I have a new install and I am quite surprised it just misses networking. That is, NO networking. ifconfig comes up with inly lo. Nothing else, most primal. It should use dhcp to connect, bit it fails to create the eth0 interface. Such a fundamental flaw is one I can't work on. Forget looking in network manager in the desktop, that's still being installed, I've checked the basic files in etc against karmic.

May 3, 2011I have two machines running ubuntu connected through a BiPAC 7401VGPR3 (Billion modem/router). One is a new notebook running Ubuntu 11.04 and the other desktop computer is running 10.04 connected to the printer and external hdd.
I can't find the right documentation to network them so that I can share HDD, printers, devices, etc. I can't get either computer to see each other via network searches.
Also may need to boot into Windows from time to time and access the network from there.

Dec 21, 2010I have a headless machine set up on my LAN which is dual boot, Ubuntu 10.04 SE and Windows. I have a printer attached to it. (HP Deskjet D1500 series) I also have a shared folder located on the machine.
Through SMB I've been able to recreate the share in Ubuntu to point to the share on Windows. When the machine is in either OS, the share can be resolved, browsed, edited, etc, from \hostsharename. Through SMB I've also been able to share a printer attached to the machine (and print to it). I have a problem though:
When the machine is in either OS, it is possible to use the same scheme to access the shared directory. This is not true with the printer. When in Windows: My Windows 7 x64 machine can connect to the printer, look for drivers, and when it doesn't find drivers in \hostprint$, it uses its own. My W7x64 machine can print a test page, and any other pages for that matter. My W7x64 machine lists the printer as "HP Deskjet D1500 series" I do not have to re-add the printer.
When in Ubuntu:I have to re-add the printer to my W7x64 machine. I have to specify the driver to use, regardless of whether I use the same print$ directory. Re-adding the printer gives me a network printer by the name of the printer, not the description (e.g. "HP Deskjet D1500 series")
My goal is to mimic the transparency of the shared directory, so whereas I've created a shared directory in Windows that persists between OSs, I want to create the network printer to persist across OSs. I can print to the printer in either OS, but the "printer" I have when the dual boot machine is in Ubuntu is NOT the "printer" I have when it's in Windows.
I need to accomplish this to avoid booting the machine into Windows for a client to print something. It seems very odd that I can make Apache, PHP, MySQL, shares, and common files persist/be identical between OSs, but not network printers. I've worked this for a few days now, exhausting what I can in information on SMB and CUPS to no avail. I am exhausted myself.

After I get network manager to stop on boot up. How do I make it so it will not auto connect to networks? My computer keeps on joining a different network on boot up. And I don't like this as some times I go to my banks website and I am on there network with out realizing it (because of the auto connect) Is there a way to stop this also?

How can I determine in a script which devices eth0, eth1, wlan0 exist and which hardware devices they apply too? Sometimes a wireless card is wlan0, other times it is eth1 or even eth3! The proc/net/dev file does not inidicate which hardware is installed.

Feb 10, 2010I installed Fedora 12 on an Eee PC 1001HA. This laptop has a Ralink RT3070 wireless chipset, for which the driver is not yet in the kernel (still in staging I believe). However I downloaded the driver, compiled it, and installed it. AFAICT, it works fine.
One small obstacle remains: I am uable to get the network interface to come up automatically; I have to run # ifconfig ra0 up. Because of this NetworkManager never sees the wireless interface, making connecting to WAPs a chore.
I created a ifconf-ra0 file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts, and it includes the line ONBOOT=yes, but this doesn't do the trick.

Apr 7, 2010If i boot to fedora and boot back to windows i can no longer can access network/internet on windows! It says the network is disconnected. The cable is connected properly and this message is happening only because i booted to fedora 12 previously before booting into windows.
I did not have this problem with fedora 10, 9. recently i did an upgrade to 12 and this is one of the problems among the many other i am facing. In order to get internet back on windows i have to shutdown the pc and wait for a while and power on again to get network back on windows. the same issues exists on windowsXP64 and vista32.
I am connected to the internet like this pc->Realtek RTL8168D(P)/811D(P)->linksys router connected to pc by network cable --> DSL modem. the router connects to DSL by ppoe
My router's ip is 192.168.0.1. usually if i type this on my browser it will take me to the routers configuration. But a previous boot to fedora and i cant even access my router. its like it says "network disconnected".
why is fedora messing up my network connection? its pathetic that there is no OA in linux and it makes my life miserable.

I'm a newbie using a Debian Linux machine as the client and Windows XP machine as the server. I have successfully mounted the XP Network drive on the Linux machine using commands from the root terminal:
mount -t smbfs -o username="Windows Username",password=windowspassword //XPcomputername/folder /mountpoint/
However when I put the command in the ect/fstab file as suggested in several posts, I don't get any result on boot up. I.e. I can't get the network drive to mount on start up, I always have to manually mount it from the root terminal.

Currently I'm using xmarks, which fits my needs nicely however, I'm looking for an alternative that gives similar functionality and would allow me to access my bookmarks from several different computers (using both midori and chrome browsers).
xmarks has a development version for chrome, which is not working at the moment, and I cannot find any plans for xmarks in midori.
