Every so often while browsing, DSN fails. The thing is that if I DIG the address at the command prompt the site immediatly pops in in Firefox. what I should do to diagnose the problem.
View 2 RepliesI have been running 10.10 server with no GUI for a few months without issue. I decided to install ubuntu desktop (GUI), because I want to turn it into a media server, and I'm finding that my Internet browsing fails intermittently. i.e. I can get [URL] sometimes and sometimes not. I have tried traceroute and found that I do not reach my local router on addresses that fail, and yet I get a full trace on addresses that are ok. Ping tests too.I remember from some time ago that the GUI may cause a network problem but I'm not sure.
By the way, other computers on the network can access this host through Samba so the NIC is working fine.
Just recently I've been having strange connectivity problems with my wireless network. The connection has previously worked fine and haven't had any problems with it. I haven't installed anything that would have affect it as far as I know. how do I go about testing the network to see where the problem lies? I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with a Netgear WG111v2 wireless adapter and my guess is it is some strange configuration problem or a rogue application is eating up packets because the system works fine when I boot it up into Windows.
When I try to ping my router I'll usually get something like 98% packet loss. However in the output below, the network sprang to life half way through my pings so it went up to 63%. What other tools can I try to find out what's going on?

Using my usb mobile broadband dongle I am able to access the internet about 25% of the time. I am able to make a connection to the '3' wireless network 100% of the time, but often Mozilla and all other applications that rely on an internet connection do not recognise that this connection has been successfully established, and give me error messages claiming there is no internet connection.
I can't discern any pattern as to whether the connection will be recognised or not. When it isn't recognised, the only solution is to disconnect and reconnect to the network. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes restarting the computer fixes the problem, and sometimes it doesn't. I also have access to a wireless network at uni. I have no problems using this network whatsoever. Housemates using the same dongle on Windows have no problems. I'm using an Acer Aspire one, the dongle is a Huawei e220, I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I have only recently reinstalled the operating system and have not needed to mess around with any network settings to get the usb dongle to 'work' the way it is currently.
I have a Huawei E 1550 USB stick modem and I'm trying to consistently get it working with Ubuntu 10.4. Using usb_modeswitch and wvdial I've got the device recognized as both a modem and disk drive and it seems to be working okay. wvdial usually is able to find the modem and connect and I can get online no problem. That's the good part.
However, after some amount of time (sometimes just a few minutes, sometimes hours, but it always eventually happens) the modem stops working and gets into a state where when I run wvdial it keeps looping and failing with:

Interestingly enough, when it's in this state I am still able to access the modem, and via AT commands am able to see that it has signal, can make phone calls, and can send SMS messages! It just can't seem to dial a data connection. Now, unplugging and plugging the modem back in almost always seems to solve this problem, only for it to fail randomly at some undetermined point in the future.
Why can't I just keep unplugging and replugging the modem, you ask? Because the computers (yes there are currently 9 computers and modems I need this to work on) are being deployed to clinics and offices in rural Africa where they will be locked in a box so they aren't stolen. I have pursued ways to shutdown power to the USB port in order to "fake" a hard pull of the cord in software, but haven't been successful so far. I've also tried reading as much as I can on the NO CARRIER response, but so far it's not turned anything up.
I have an old Tatung tablet pc, with touchscreen, stupid speakers and an atheros wifi card (AR5001X+). With XP, everything works reasonably well, and wifi connectivity is rock solid. I know I'm asking for trouble installing *nix on this machine, but if the wireless worked, I'd be happy. However... With an updated Lucid install, I can see and connect to open, WEP, and WPA(1/2/tkip/aes/whatever) networks. I get good speeds with every network I've tried, but after a minute or two, my connection speed drops to zero, only to recover after another few minutes. A few minutes later, the wireless dies again, then reconnects....
Both the router and the tablet show that I still have a connection, and the connection speed recorded by both does not change from the 'working' condition. I get nothing in the logs (router or tablet) and no indication (aside from transfers stalling) that there's any problem. The 'network history' part of Gnome system monitor shows the data rate dropping to zero, but a network monitor applet on the gnome panel shows transmissions and (later) recieves. Reported signal strength remains constant, and seems to have no bearing on the frequency or length of the dropouts.
I've tried the stock lucid drivers, the lucid wireless backports, and madwifi (currently on madwifi) with no change to symptoms. I did think that it may be to do with scanning for networks (iwevent showed completed scans as the dropouts ended) so I removed network manager and tried static configuration with /etc/network/interfaces . The problems persited (although iwevent is now silent) and I am now using Wicd with no change.

I see nothing toobad in these, so I ran a longer test - I bash'd a while loop to ping the router, run ifconfig and iwconfig, and spit the results into files. I concurrently ran a wireshark capture. All of these contain a lot of text/data, so I've attached them here. I can't see any connection between the output of ifconfig/iwconfig/wireshark while the ping drops, but I'm no expert.

I got a NetGear wireless router recently. Attached it to my Huawei (pardon the spelling) modem. I have a HP 540 laptop running Ubuntu 10.04 The wireless gets connected. But there's an exclamation mark almost all the time. Very frequently these days, the connection gets bogged down or websites just don't open at all. But the icon (with the exclamation mark) shows Active Connection. I don't know where to start looking for bugs. Seems odd. Wireless is connected, I can connect to sites, but there's the exclamation.. and sooner or later, connection goes off but the icon still stays the same with "active" label.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've got UNE 10.10 installed on a Samsung N150 that uses the RTL8192E for wireless. When the wireless works then it generally works okay, but I'm having problems with reboots and long-running connections. This is different to the mass of posts (mainly from 2009) about the card not working at all, so I started a new thread.Basically, 90%+ of cold boots result in a successful wireless connection, with Network Manager remembering my WPA password.
When the wireless is up then it never obviously drops out, but I've got an app with a long-running connection that seems to disconnect itself occasionally. Looking at Wireshark then it appears that there are a number of retransmits, and a big batch just before it disconnects (which implies that the app is dropping its connection because it thinks the other end disappeared). Running the app on another machine with a different card but through the same release of Ubuntu and the app and the same router doesn't result in retries or drop-outs.On the times when a cold boot doesn't successfully reconnect then it asks for the WPA password, then continues trying, then asks for the WPA password again, then continues trying, then asks...and so on until I rmmod and modprobe the driver.
I originally had problems with the machine refusing to restore after a hibernate/suspend, but this was solved by a tip to rmmod the driver on hibernate/suspend and modprobe it on restore.The wireless will now work okay on some restores, but is more likely to repeat the behaviour described above for the failed cold boot.

Attached is a file with some snippets from dmesg around the time of the wireless failure, and the log of what it does after a remove and re-add for comparison of the "correct" messages.
To be brief, I am having intermittent connectivity issues with a wired connection to a WRT54G2 router. I have no such issues if I am plugged straight into the modem. My wireless persists throughout the outages and they usually require me to restart the interface on my machine. I have used Wicd Network Manager and Ubuntu's out-of-the-box Network Manager.

i have just installed 10.10 under wubi, first time trying to use this network card under ubuntu. works fine on XP where it connects with good signal strength to a zyxel p-600 b/g router (my 3 other machines also connect fine to this router)
i am using WPA2, it takes 30secs to 1min to connect in the first place, then runs slowly and with intermittent disconnects, reports good signal strength in network manager.
i have been fortunate enough to have 3 machines that run ubuntu flawlessly out of the box..
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 because I was facing internet problems with previous Ubuntu 9.04 after I upgraded it with downloaded software. And now, 10.10 connects to wireless, but shows web-page some-times and repeatedly disconnects. Earlier it wasn't reaching Internet at all. Some of the topics here helped a lot. But this intermittent internet seems not going anywhere. Wired Internet connects easily though.
I've tried :-
-disabling ipv6..... first in Firefox, then in Kernel also
-Setting DNS.....System> Preferences> Network Connections
-setting static Ip
The system still gives trouble.

In the last week I have noticed that sometimes my Mobile Broadband connection just goes off without me doing anything! I have credit on the dongle account, so it isn't that. I'm using fedora 14 on an acer aspire one netbook. Dongle is a Huawei E160 on o2 here in the UK Kernel is 2.6.35.11-83.i686.fc14
Sometimes unplugging and replugging the usb dongle works. Othertimes, I have to leave it out for several hours. It does seem to happen daily, though.
I'm having problems with my internet connection; it seems to be working fine then every other click of a page there is no connection, then I click it again a second later and it works. I am using a wired network connection plugged into an addon wireless router.
When I use ping under network tools it seems to be fine, then freezes halfway through and doesn't receive those few packets, giving me a transmission percentage of about 70%.
I have set up one of my linux box as link load balancer for two ADSL connection. After deployment, I have found out that instead of being fast, it has become slow. What I have observed that my request get out to internet but comes back intermittently. Is this a standard scenario ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows 7 professional x64 pc that intermittently fails to resolve host aliases. The nameserver is a Fedora 11 system running bind 9.6.2-p2. Its cannonical name is trixter.intranet.org, and it serves several web sites, each with a different host alias: hg.intranet.org, svn.intranet.org, bugzilla.intranet.org, etc.
Occasionally, the Windows pc will be unable to find any of the aliased hosts, even when it can find the canonical name. The aliases will be un-resolvable for a period of several minutes, and then, with no intervention, they can be found again. Trixter can always resolve the aliases to itself.
Even stranger, when I use Cygwin from the problematic Windows 7 PC, it CAN resolve the hosts. I can ping hg.intranet.org from a Cygwin shell, but not from a cmd.exe window. Administrator privileges make no difference.
I have a Dell laptop with a bcm4312 wireless card. Every once in a while though, the laptop is unable to send or receive any data for 30 seconds. The connection is not dropped, and nothing shows up in any system logs. Both the wl and b43 drivers have this problem, but it works fine under vista.
View 1 Replies View RelatedBrowsing via SSH Tunnel very slow When browsing in firefox at work via proxy through ssh on my 8.04 server the speed is near dial up. I have compression enabled, tried restarting ssh, and rebooting the server but it remains so sluggish. At home the connection is quick but the speed is lost in translation once I ssh in. I also tried adding "UseDNS no" to the ssh config but that did not help with the slow login or any other speed issues.
View 5 Replies View Relatedmy computer is very slow to view regular web pages, and generally fails to load them. It seems to be a problem specifically with webpages - I can work over SSH, use email, transfer files over FTP connections, with no noticeable problems, but any regular website (including this one) can take an age to load. This happens regardless of the browser I use (at least, it happens on Firefox, Opera, and Chromium), and regardless of wired or wireless connection (though admittedly I've not tried using a wired connection very much). As far as I can tell, it can also happen on any website. It is specific to linux - my computer is dual-boot ubuntu 10.04/Windows XP, and there is no networking problem when I use Windows.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having a bizarre problem where my network connection stops working randomly. At first I thought it was a DNS issue since Firefox simply chilled out on "Looking up [hostname]" until it timed out, but after further investigation (pinging IP's, "host" and "dig" being unable to reach servers) it became apparent that I couldn't even access the DNS servers i.e. the Wicked Connection of the East was most sincerely dead.
There are two strange things about this: one, there are no errors except "timeout". The network manager is happy, Firefox is happy until the lookup fails... Two, the failures only start *after* DHCP configuration. DHCP configuration never has any trouble sending or receiving packets. I'm going to try static IP and whatnot to see if that helps, more information later.
I've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox,opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network

I'm using wlan and I'm behind a NAT firewall. Downloading with BitTorrent can reach speeds of 1,5MB/s, but browsing is incredibly slow. Chromium/Firefox seems to hang forever on "connecting.." or "waiting for". Sometimes pressing the reload button will speed it up. I have two Ubuntu boxes and they are the same way.
I don't get it, if downloading is so fast, how can browsing be so slow. Yes I have disabled ipv6 in grub and in Firefox, don't know how to do it in Chromium. Have 64-bit Ubuntu. Cnet wlan card using rt61pci module.
Got an Edimax 7717un USB dongle for my Acer aspire 6930 (built-in WiFi is broken). It finds access point OK, but fails to setup with DHCP. If I put in manual IP config, I can ping OK, but I cannot browse web (or even my router's setup page). I get same behaviour on a home brew desktop.
With manual IP config, ping to my router works fine (and very fast, as does ping to 2 or 3 internet web sites. I can traceroute to internet web sites OK as well. With web browsing, if I wait a few minutes some bits of the page may arrive. With connection set to DHCP, Wicd shows WiFi connecting OK, but DHCP setup times out.

USB 3G Huawei E1550 modem is used for connecting to the internet.When I'm connecting to the internet modem light is blue (it means that I'm connecting using 3G network)I have issues with speed when browsing internet (using Firefox and Google Chrome) or updating software using apt-get (download speed around 1.5 - 6 kB).At the same time I can download files using Transmission with 60 - 120 kB.

HPG62-144DX notebook, Windows 7 and considering Ubuntu. I installed 10.10 and tried to get my wifi running but that wouldn't work. I had a connection only sometimes and it broke up after 5 minutes. Once I got a webpage but annoyingly slooow. Got the advice to update drivers and stuff. But the wifi connection is the only one I have...
Went back to 10.4 32-bit. Booted from CD and will keep it that way until this is sorted out. Now I see my wifi hotspots directly and I have no problem to establish a connection. The icon shows 3 bars quality. Network Tools says: Wlan1 = Realtek, Transmitted bytes xxx Received bytes yyy, no errors, link speed = 1Mbps, State = active. Looks good!
The only minor thing here is that enabling/disabling my internal Atheros antanna also enables/disables my Alfa USB Wifi adapter (based on Realtek 8187) but who cares. A bigger problem is: when I start Firefox it doesn't come up with a webpage. It just keeps on saying: "loading". At the bottom of the screen it keeps saying "Looking up" for ages. Nothing further.
I don't know if others are experiencing this but browsing is extremely slow in firefox after "upgrading" to ubuntu 11.04. I have not tried other browsers. Even checking for updates fails several times.
I had to re-boot to windows to post this thread and now it's working fine. It's been 3 days since upgrading and I've observed many times that there's no such problem in windows while I have to wait like 4-5 minutes and refresh many times to open a single page. Some sites like google are quicker though. I use firefox 4.0 both in ubuntu and windows. I didn't have this problem in 10.10 and it took me about 5 hrs. to download 1 GB upgrade packages.
I'm running Mac OS on a home network that includes a Win 7 machine and a Ubuntu box (Ubuntu 11.04 (GNU/Linux 2.6.38-8-generic i686)). Connecting to, and browsing the shared drives I have on the Ubuntu box (which acts as my server) is extremely slow from the Mac, it seems that the icons especially take ages to load. I've found a few suggestions on the net that I've implemented to no avail i.e.

Are there any other settings I should play with, or is there an alternative to samba that will work faster on a mixed network and be compatible with everything?
I have a desktop running Ubuntu 10.10 and several terabytes of files on it. In Windows all I have to do is enable sharing and my Mac will see the shared folders right away and I have no problem browsing them. I read somewhere that it was essentially the same process in Ubuntu which I followed but I am unable to browse. The desktop does show up in OSX but when I click on it from Finder (Path Finder actually) I get a message saying "The server "Foo" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
If I select "Connect to Server" under the Go menu in finder and type in smb://ip-address then I get one step further. I am asked to log in and I just click on guest (my user name and password didn't work) and then I get a list of all the shared folders but when I click on one I get a message very similar to the one above but not identical.
Everything I have found is about 5 years old. Or has anyone had similar issues and solved them? This is the first time I have ever tried any kind of networking in Linux but I am thinking Ubuntu 10.10 may have some sort of software firewall enabled by default?
I have noticed that when iptables is active on my router i get a noticeable slowdown on browsing. This is untraceable through traceroute:

I use firewall builder to configure iptables. I have removed all rules while trying to find the one causing the problem, but even disabling all rules does not solve the problem. So, by leaving only an "accept-all" rule on firewall builder(so i don't lock myself outside) I still get slowdowns. In this case

I've searched these forums as well as Firefox's site, as well as searching on Google Linux but can't find what I'm looking for.In a nutshell, I want to keep a log of my users' browser history so that even if they clear history or set Firefox to not keep history, I can still view a log of what site they have visited.My hope is that I can write a script(although I'm a BASH newb it would be a nice little real-world project for me to attempt) that would keep info such as user,visit date,ip of visited site, just the basics. A great feature would be for the logs to be emailed to me for inspection but that isn't vital if I can navigate to the log myself.
For all I know this is already available somewhere in the log folders I just can't find anything. If it helps I'm running Mint 9 Isadora and Firefox 3.6.12
