Ubuntu Networking :: Ethernet Not Connecting Noapic ?
Apr 26, 2010
My computer needs the boot option "noapic". Unfortunately the Ethernet doesn't work. It does work when I use the boot options "noapic acpi=off" but the printer that is connected via a parallel port does not work. Also I have to push the power button the system is shutting down with this option.

I have two computers, a laptop and a workstation, both running linux (Ubuntu and Fedora). For some reasons, it's handier for me to work from the laptop, accessing the workstation only from remote. At present, I have to connect to the workstation using a very complicated system that implies VPN + ssh passing through the internet. It works, but it would be far easier and faster if I could set up a direct connection between the two computers. Unfortunately, I can't use the ethernet ports or wi-fi (it's a long story why, but I really can't).I own a usb data transfer cable, but I don't know how to use it.

I've been doing some reading and I cannot work out why I'm having this problem. My 32-bit Ubuntu Server running 10.10 has a Realtek RTL8111 ethernet card which supports up to 1000mbps. However, when I run sudo ethtool eth0 I get:
Code:
Settings for eth0:
Supported ports: [ TP MII ]
Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
[Code]....
After running sudo ethtool -s 1000 to try and change speed to 1000mbps, the output is still the same as before. Why is this :S?

just recently I made the move back to Ubuntu from Windows. Upon re-installing I noticed a problem with me connecting to the internet. Previously on Windows I had updated my Ethernet Adapter driver, upon installing I would have to disable and re-enable the device to let my computer have access to the internet. My problem here is how would I go about fixing this on Ubuntu so I can have internet access on Ubuntu

The Wired Internet adapter isn't working with Ubuntu 10.10, and without this working, I can't get my updates for the Broadcom WLAN adapter. I have a Realtek RTL8101E/8102E PCI-Expredd Fast Ethernet controller. I have looked for solutions, but haven't found any relating to my problem.
To be specific: Ubuntu 10.10 is recognizing the Ethernet adapter as eth0. When I try to manually connect after inserting an Ethernet cable connected to the Internet, it tries for a couple of minutes before telling me the adapter's been disconnected. The connector lights remain the same on the port as they always were.

I tried to setup sharing to connect Ethernet and wireless. I want Ethernet connected to desktop A, and wireless connected to another laptop(B), with my laptop acting as an AP. I set the network settings in Firestarter: Internet for wireless, local network for Ethernet. I want to share Internet from laptop B over the network. Internet won't work from my laptop since it seems to use the wrong interface.(Since the desktop is sharing Internet, although not on Internet usually when connected via Ethernet. And of course DNS/Gateway IPs aren't set for wlan0 since it's acting as an AP.) SMB wouldn't work for desktop A and laptop B: laptop B could detect desktop, but reports error "Path not found".

i have ubuntu 10.10 64b and for some reason last night the wired network autoeth01 suddenly will not connect to my router. it is a dual boot machine so i booted into windows and it is working fine in that OS.
I then had a look at the status on my laptop running ubuntu 10.10 32b and that was showing the same message "wired network autoeth01 disconnected" i cannot for the life of me figure this out. just before it was disconnected i had been copying 7gigs worth of data using samba from the 32b machine to the 64 bit machine.
i have tried deleting the wired entry and recreating it.
tried different cables
even changed the router
works with all windows machines connected to network
here is what comes up in lfconfig:
jason@ubuntu1:~$ lfconfig
No command 'lfconfig' found, did you mean:
Command 'fconfig' from package 'redboot-tools' (main)
Command 'ifconfig' from package 'net-tools' (main)
Command 'ldconfig' from package 'libc-bin' (main)

I've been trying for a few hours to connect to the internet on my debian jessie system. I used the netinstall without installing a DE so I boot into the command line for the mean time.
I have had no luck connecting to the internet after trying to configure the network. I have followed the debian tutorial from the wiki and tried some youtube video tutorials. I just have an ethernet cable connected to my home network. I have tried both dhcp and a manual static setup using /etc/network/interfaces and checked the /etc/resolv.conf file. Ping doesn't work and i cant update or install anything on the system...

I just did a fresh install of Squeeze with a KDE desktop on my computer. I use this computer to run an instrument in my lab. The instrument is connected to my computer through an ethernet card. Since my reinstall I cannot figure out how to get my computer and instrument communicating again. I'm guessing that I need to somehow tell my computer to connect to the device, but I don't know how. Here is my interface configuration:
[Code].....
I think my instrument is connected to eth2, which does not show any inet addr or Bcast ip, so I'm guessing that is a problem. How do I fix this?

I just installed Fedora Core on my Dell Inpsiron B130 laptop and I am having trouble connecting to the internet both wirelessly and with an ethernet cord into the router. When trying to configure my network, I dont recognize any of the ethernet adapters in the drop down list. I have been told that my wireless card is Linux compatible (dell y8029 dell wireless 1370 802.11/a/b/g mini pci). My ethernet card is a B130 Broadcom Ethernet Driver which isnt in the drop down menu either.
I read that I need to download an ndiswrapper but I dont know where to find this download AND even if I could download it to a zipdribe, I have trouble opening a USB flash in Linux becuase its not a "valid block device". This is after the command "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbflash"

I recently enabled noapic on my laptop because it was experiencing strange input freezes on several distros that I tried.Ok, so it does not use the ioapics. My question is, what does this mean for the system? If it used apics before, what happens now? I am a freshly graduated computer science major, and I have worked with basics pics on projects before, but I am curious how this effects the running system.

I installed ubuntu on a second hard drive.Nowhere did the fracken ubuntu installer ask my permission to over-write my mbr but that's exactly what it did.I'm booted off the rescue CD trying to restore the mbr to how centos left it (I'll add ubuntu to grub manually) but I can't boot into rescue.linux rescue results in a kernel panic suggesting I need the noapic argument. Makes sense, I needed that to install and need that in grub.linux rescue noapic boots into the installer, not rescue. How do I boot into rescue mode with the noapic kernel argument?

how to edit the new grub.cfg file. For some reason when I start any version of linux none of my usb ports are powered unless I use these boot parameters (noapic nolapic). I have no idea why and I don't really care why, all I want to do is edit grub.cfg so it will incorporate these parameters automatically at startup.
P.S. Why change from the old menu.list?

I have a server with two ethernet ports. I configured eth0 to be static, set at 10.1.10.148. I plugged in another router into the other ethernet port in order to configure that router. I configured eth1 to use dhcp. Using /etc/network/interfaces rather than gnome network manager. When I did this, I lost internet connectivity (internet routes through eth0 of course)
- Why did I lose internet connectivity?
In order to recover internet activity, I had to disconnect the new router on eth1 of course, and do sudo ifdown eth1. That wasn't enough however. After rebooting numerous times and pulling out my hair, I finally tried configuring eth0 as dhcp, rather than static, and this fixed the problem.
- Why didn't sudo ifdown eth1 solve the problem? What information was saved between reboots that somehow remembered that I plugged in the new router? Because my thinking was if /etc/network/interfaces was identical, and the network topology was identical, after a reboot everything should be restored, but it wasn't.

I am basically wanting to use my Ubuntu 10.10 computer as a router. Note: Before you say just get a router please note that I am poor/cheap. I have two ethernet connections and one wireless connection on my netbook. I want to share the internet connection that is going into one of the ethernet cards through the other ethernet card and the wireless card.
DSL-->1sr Eth --> 2nd Eth (currently works)
DSL-->1sr Eth --> Wireless Card (Adhoc) <--(connects with limited connectivity AKA no internet)
The 2nd Ethernet card already has working internet, but when I connect to the Wireless card (through an Adhoc network), it cannot get an IP (I believe).

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

I installed 10.04 today, and I can't get any connection through the LAN. I've tried some stuff on my own, but I've been unsuccessful so far. It's not a hardware or connection issue, as it works perfectly fine in Windows 7. I haven't had this issue in any previous version of Ubuntu (or any Linux distro for that matter). The weirdest part is I booted from the installation CD as as LiveCD, and everything worked perfectly fine. It only stops working after I actually install it. Here's the results of ifconfig:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:17:31:d8:d5:76
inet6 addr: fe80::217:31ff:fed8:d576/64 Scope:Link

Since it seems that it will take a while for Linux to get reliable wireless, I've been looking at that Ethernet AC Outlet as a possible solution. I'm hoping it's an all hardware solution (my ethernet works fine). However the vendors, if they list any OS at all, never list Linux.Has anyone had any experience with these?

I have been using Ubuntu for quite a while now (~3 years.) I recently installed 10.10 on an HP Mini 1000. The installation went fine, but now I am puzzling over how to connect to the internet. When I plug an ethernet cable into the netbook, the port light lights up, but the system does absolutely nothing. Under the connections menu on the top panel, it just says disconnected. Also, the wireless connection section states that the device is not ready because firmware is not installed. Most solutions I see for problems of this kind are to download the drivers, but I cannot do that because neither connection works.
