how to edit the new grub.cfg file. For some reason when I start any version of linux none of my usb ports are powered unless I use these boot parameters (noapic nolapic). I have no idea why and I don't really care why, all I want to do is edit grub.cfg so it will incorporate these parameters automatically at startup.
P.S. Why change from the old menu.list?
I have triple booted Windows XP (195 GB)partition 0? the second partition is Windows 7 (195 GB)And the rest of a 1TB hard drive went to Open Suse 11.3. if it makes any difference I used g parted to create the three partitions and made them all primary. My problem is I want to change the way they all get along. When I boot up, I get the options;

windows 2
which is fine, but clicking on windows 1 takes me to the windows boot loader with the options of windows 7, or previous version of windows. clicking on windows 2 brings up a screen telling me " rootnoverify (hd0,1) chainloader +1 BOOTMGR is missing press ctrl+alt+del to restart" I would like the end result to be windows 1=XP,windows 2=7, then I can rename them accordingly. one more thing, when I installed openSUSE, I let it automatically configure the hard drive and create the necessary partitions(it deleted partition 3 first). i remember it saying somewhere that the boot manager was past the 125 GB limit, and might not boot.
I have a "master" IDE HD upon which reside several Linux OSs and a couple of Windoze OSs. The boot system is Mandriva using Grub Legacy and the latter's menu.lst file is where I select which OS I wish to use. I use HD physical carriers for my HDs. I used GPartEd to copy over newly installed OSs on another drive to the "master" HD. The commands in the menu.lst file for Linux OSs are representative as follows:

configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst
Task: Enter Grub2 which, I seem to understand, is a work in progress. I presume that some commands in Grub2 are not recognizable by Grub Legacy. I installed Debian 6 on another drive and I wish to incorporate an entry in the menu.lst file described above using the technique described above. Is it possible to use the menu.lst file in Grub Legacy (0.97) in order to boot the Grub2 Debian OS? Or am I chasing windmills?
I'm required to use this to use the live cd, and just to install it. But I can't find the option to use it when booting.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had windows 7 installed on my system prior to the installation of Lucid Lynx. The boot loader for windows is installed in /dev/sda1. The main windows installation is in /dev/sda3 Ubuntu is installed in /dev/sda5.
The grub update has added a loader for windows 7 for /dev/sda3 instead of /dev/sda1. How do i change that to /dev/sda1 in grub 2.0 as it says that it is not recommended to edit grub.cfg in grub 2.0. I know i can add something in custom section but I am not a pro in linux hence i'm not sure how to add that
I had to followed this tutorial on how to Install ubuntu on my Toshiba Satellite M35X-S114. I am stuck on step 2 now. I used one of the options and was able to get Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 onto my laptop. But now on my first restart I have to edit the GRUB menu and change the boot option so I will no longer then the black screen when booting. Only problem is I can't get to the edit GRUB menu. I turn the computer on select Ubuntu to boot. A black screen shows up I hit e to edit then the Ubuntu loading screen comes up (The one that says Ubuntu and has the dots below it) That screen stays up for about a half a second and it goes back to black and hangs there.

This system works fine with the last 2.26 kernel from FC8, but due to EOL of the security updates I tried to install FC11 and FC10. The first sign of trouble is that their installation only works with acpi=off or nolapic options. As those options disable either fan-control or the second cpu-core I consider them undesirable. Is there a recent correctly working kernel available? Or do I have to downgrade to a distribution that uses a 2.26 kernel?

I set up a dual boot system with Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10. Ubuntu is the first OS listed in the boot menu. I would like to change the boot order so Windows is first. 1. How do I edit the menu to either remove or comment out one or more of the kernels?
2. Can I remove any of the kernels I don't want, which files do I remove, and will doing so compromise my system.

I think my Natty 64 bit install is missing a dependency for gk, even though it shows up install in Synaptic. I have also tried using Start up Manager and the changes I make there don't show up after restarting either. I just want to change the default boot to number 4, Windows. Any suggestions are welcome, but I have tried all the ones I've found on this forum so far and none have worked, including editing etc/grub/default and saving with sudo update-grub. That's when I get a "gk not found" error.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have two hard drives windows 7 is on one of them and Ubuntu 9.10 is on the other. Both drives are 320GB, but different models of drives by Seagate. Both drives are detected by the BIOS and both drives are detected by Windows, but only one drive is detected by Ubuntu during the installation process. I had to literally disconnect the Windows drive to get Ubuntu to recognize the drive I wanted it on. Now that Ubuntu is completely installed and a new Kernel has been downloaded and installed it finally recognizes both drives as existing.
There is some kind of problem with the Installer and the original Kernel that kept it from seeing the second drive. I will literally have to manually edit Grub to get it to boot the Windows drive. How do I edit Grub? and what kind of Grub command would do the trick? I searched for "multi-boot" and literally read them all, there was one thread about multi-boot on multi-drives, but it did not fit because the Installer recognized both drives with that thread. I have to change the boot order in the BIOS to get the drive to boot that I want currently.

I've been desperate to get rid of my Windows install for a while now and have finally started to make the move over, but have a problem with my Ubuntu 10.04 install. I've scoured the help documentation and forum for days now without managing to resolve my problem, and have finally resorted to posting my problem. So I'm sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.
1 Installed Ubuntu on my laptop (Viglen Furtura S200) but the only way I have been able to get it to install and boot properly is edit the GRUB with the following acpi=off i915.modeset xforcevesa. I had to add these parameters even to boot the live CD as well. I think I'm right in assuming that this is forcing the use of a generic graphics driver, consequently leaving some visual features unavailable. I'm not really sure what turning acpi off is doing. Is it possible to resolve this? Is this the cause of problem number 2?
2 After install there is no sound. Sound preferences shows no hardware and ALSAmixer is empty when opened. I have followed the sound troubleshooting through and it looks like my sound card is actually being picked up on the board, but I fall at the point of checking the loaded ALSA Modules as my report shows that none are loaded?!
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 (desktop version) and it performs flawlessly. Now I want to add a second hard drive to the same box, install Ubuntu 9.10 *server* on it, and use GRUB to control which one boots.
Problem is, I'm a Windows pro but a Linux n00b. Should I disconnect the first hard drive (the one with Ubuntu desktop) before I do the server installation on the second (new) drive? Also, how do I edit GRUB's menu to offer a choice between the 2 OSes?
I am trying to edit my grub.conf file. I am logged in as root. It says it is a read only file. I have tried to set permission with chmod 777 and also tried through GUI. Using VI it says it's a read only file. Using nano it will not write either. I have two choices on boot up. I want to automatically go to second automatically. First at the moment is CentOS-4 i386 (2.6.9-55.ELsmp) and second is CentOS-4 i386 (2.6.9-55.EL).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm building a new system, and yesterday I tried to install kubuntu, but could only get it running using the nolapic option (noapic is not nescessary, and noapic without nolapic won't work). Now I have the system installed but can only get it running using nolapic and therefore without SMP (which is a no go for most people, including me).
When I try to boot without nolapic, the system goes just fine through loading the kernel and kubuntu (that is, until the end of kubuntu's loading screen), but when it's done with loading it displays the login screen and freezes completely. No input or activity whatsoever. Sysrq keys seem not to work either.
I've searched for similar problems but had little luck so far. I'm using a ga-p55m-ud2 mobo, core i3 530 (2 cores with HT) and an HD5770 (if this is relevant at all). I was hoping some of you experienced users could suggest some kind of workaround to the problem (maybe the kernel is configuring the lapics towards a lockup?) or instruct me as to how could I know what the system was doing right before stopping, in order to locate more specifically what's the problem.

You can disable the dhcp server on the router if you go to advanced setup and in the dhcp option You should find two radio buttons off and on click off and you will disable the dhcp server on the router refer to your router documentations. I do not wish to disable the DHCP on my router (2wire). I have fixed the router so it assigns static IP addresses - by following the Management and Console Diagnostic" portion on this page: [URL]. There are 7 machines getting IP addresses from the 2wire router. Of the 7, I have configured 4 to have static IP addresses allocated to them by the router.
For example, the domain here is : 2wire.gateway.net
If I have a host named "zazu", and I ping zazu.2wire.gateway.net, I get the right IP address.

My computer needs the boot option "noapic". Unfortunately the Ethernet doesn't work. It does work when I use the boot options "noapic acpi=off" but the printer that is connected via a parallel port does not work. Also I have to push the power button the system is shutting down with this option.

I used Ubuntu a few years back. I simply was not able to make it my main OS since I couldn't get video calling to work reliably enough. Anyways I just installed and noticed my grub menu had many more entries then I have operating systems on my computer. Some reason they came up as duplicates. I have so far gathered they took away my menu.lst, they replaced it with something like etc/general/grub. It appears editing this file doesn't give me the ability to change entries. There are a few I would like to rename, and a few I want to get rid of. There is also some other file that is not supposed to be edited, will I need to edit this or is there another way around it? Assuming that you already looked at the grub2 documentation and had trouble figuring out what to do, try this. Use sudo to edit /etc/grub.d/40_custom. It will look like this:

TLDR: Grub 2 added extra entries, how do I remove and rename some?
i have to edit grub etc/default file but when i open it, it is a read only file (i have to put "i915.modeset=1" in it ) i think i need to do it through the terminal
