Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom 4318 Chipset Not Supported
Dec 22, 2010
Here is what I have as far as hardware goes:
Compaq Presario V2000
- PROCESSOR: Intel Pentium M 710 -- 1.4 GHz
- RAM 2 GB
- HD 80 GIG
- Duel booting XP Pro with Ultimate Edition 2.8 (I understand this is built from Ubuntu 10.10)
- lspci -vnn | grep 14e4 yields the following:
Code:
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)
I have followed to the tee this guidance: [URL]
I tried the installing b43 drivers with internet (using ethernet)
I tried installing off the DVD using the no internet option
I even tried installing the STA drivers even though I know the 4318 chipset is not mentioned as a supported chipset.
All of these were loaded/extracted with no errors via terminal following the guidance to the letter. Now here is a problem I have not read that anyone else has run into. (maybe I just missed it). When I go: System > Administration > Additional Drivers the only additional driver that shows up is "Software Modem". I can't for the life of me figure out why the b43 and STA drivers are not showing up to activate. I can install drivers all day long, if I can't activate them, it really does become a moot point.

Ok, so spec's on my setup: Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Inspiron 530.. Q6600 w/3GB RAM, 500 GB HD w/radion 2600xt and broadcom wlan NIC. My issue is that the broadcom will not connect to my router. I did some searching, found a link from this site detailing how to get my NIC to work on Intrepid, but that's not what I have. I followed that guide anyway, substituting my driver for his (guide is on sampbar.com) and nothing. It's showing now as not ready. I've installed ndiswrapper and grabbed the drivers for my NIC from my Vista install, but when I use ndiswrapper to do that, I get an error saying it can't tell if the hardware is present, then shows me it is present and it still won't connect.

I've got the b43 driver and firmware installed, and the system comes up fine, but the max throughput on the wlan0 is about 100Kb/s. My laptop and iwl do about 2.5Mbps from the same location in the house. The signal is plenty strong:
wlan0
IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"sar2"
Mode: Managed Frequency:2.422 GHz Access Point: 00:23:69:22:5C:00
Bit Rate=36 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality=61/70 Signal level=-49 dBm Noise level=-57 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
Is this expected from the b43 driver and a bcm4318? I was hoping for much better throughput. Also, I tried the broadcom-wl driver, but it doesn't seem to recognize the card. It looks like it's not supported from their site, only the 4311,12,21,22 were listed, although I see posts where other people claim they are using it with a 4318?

some time ago I installed 8.10 on my x20 thinkpad. I at the time was trying to get it going on a Netgear WG511 v2 card. I was eventually successful in getting it going with ndiswrapper and all has been happy until...
I decided to give my laptop to an elderly friend for his first computer. He is living in a location where (for a variety of reasons) he is sharing a network connection to the internet with a few people. The protocol there WPA2 TKIP (IIRC) and no matter what the bloody thing won't connect. Here at home I run a different setup so its not a big deal
So, I thought I'd try another card to get it going there. I chose a "Aironet" card (badged a Dell 4800 LT) and tried to install this on 8.10
I expected it would install out of the box, but did not "seem to".
I followed the steps on this page, but still it won't connect to my WiFi at home (which I am using to connect to with this x31 thinkpad)
I am using Network Management Applet 0.70 and this works fine with the Netgear card, even showing all the local networks it finds.
When I plug in the Dell card it blinks the activity light and the status light in seemingly meaningful ways, but nothing seems to connect and I find nothing listed in the Network Applet.
I suspect that the OS is discovering the card as when doing an iwconfig I find two entries that would be that card:
eth1 and wifi0
iwlist scan returns:
which makes me think two interfaces are taking the same hardware...
iwconfig returns idential results for eth1 and wifi0

I am getting ready to buy a wireless N adapter for my computer but I want to make sure its natively supported. I don't want to have to use ndiswrapper or manufacturer supplied drivers. I have been looking on newegg and I think I have narrowed it down to two choices. One has the Atheros AR9285 chipet and the other has the Realtek RTL8188RE chipset. I am fairly certain that the Atheros is natively supported since according to the newegg reviews it is. However the Realtek one is cheaper but I can't seem to find any information on whether or not its supported.

I regret updating to 11.04. It broke everything during the update. I cannot get the broadcom wireless chipset to work more than 10 seconds, No matter how much research I do here. I have not been able to work within my GDocs for the last three days. Can I restore back to my 10.10 settings? I have an acer laptop.

It looks like my laptop's wireless chipset (Broadcom) has/is dying. It won't work anymore on my Lucid install whereas it was working perfectly. The warrenty is long expired.
lspci brings up nothing about it anymore, it once did.
I booted my laptop into Win7 and it no longer finds it either. The manual slider switch on my HP Pavillion dv6000 is in the on position but the light is yellow.
It will very rarely work on Win7 now.
I can't afford a new laptop just now so it looks like I need an external wireless adaptor. I have (open busses) USB, cardbus/54, and a small firewire port. It does not pcmcia or other busses.
Any particular chipsets to look for or avoid?

I'm running ubuntu 9.10 and I'm trying to get my RNX-ESYN1 with rt3070 chipset to work. I've tried to download and install the newest drivers from ralink's page and when I type "lsusb" in a terminal I get this "Bus 001 Device 002: ID 148f:3070 Ralink Technology, Corp." so that means if it's plugged in and should work. In the network manager it shows only my PCI broadcom card, but not my USB stick. When I type in the "iwconfig" command I get the "ra0" but not in the network manager.
ra0 RT2870 Wireless ESSID:"" Nickname:""
Mode:Auto Frequency=2.412 GHz
Link Quality=10/100 Signal level:0 dBm Noise level:-143 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
[Code]...
and still nothing changed, I got it to work once, but I reinstalled my system and can't get it to work again. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong. Last time I did it, both of my wifi adapters were showing up in the network manager at once and were working great. I need my Ralink to use with the aircrack which doesn't work with my broadcom.

Just moved from Mandriva 2010.1 to Ubuntu 10.10 and am having problems with the wifi. It connects fine, but tends to grind to a halt every now and then. I always have this problem with Ubuntu... hence me migrating to Mandriva in the past. My card uses the Atheros AR5007G Wifi chipset. So, using ndiswrapper, I installed the windows drivers. Everything seemed to go okay. Yet, after a restart, I'm having the same problem. Which makes me think I'm still using the same old driver. So I added blacklist ath_hal and blacklist ath_pci to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. Restarted. And I'm still having drop-out problems.
ndiswrapper -l
net5211 : driver installed
device (168C:001D) present (alternate driver: ath5k)

I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 that I've been running 10.04 on forever. It has the BCM4309 wireless chipset in it, which worked great. BUT ONLY ON THAT PARTICULAR COPY OF 10.04. When I tried 10.10, Pinguy, Mint, and Fedora I couldn't get the wireless to work again. Finally, that got frustrating, so I reinstalled 10.04 LTS. I don't know if the kernal or the driver changed, but I can no longer get the wireless to work anymore. There's a lot of posts about this particular chipset, and they all seem incomplete. Basically, I am certain that I can get this to work. I just installed Pinguy again, which is 10.10.With the current set-up, my wifi card can see all the networks, but it can't connect. It constantly asks or my password and then connects for a brief second before losing the network again

this is my first attempt to get into Linux (10.04 Lucid Lynx), and I'm eager to learn. The problem is however that i can't connect to the internet using my USB wifi dongle (Jensen 25150). I've tried what this link says:I've tried to blacklist rt2800usb, rt2x00lib, rt2x00usb and rt2870sta and to load "/etc/modules/rt3070sta", but no luck in that, so I simply do not know what to do next. Perhaps I haven't blacklisted them the right way? I've typed in the commands and saved Gedit and closed it. Is that the right way?

Wife's laptop has AR5001 Wireless Adapter laptop model is Toshiba Satellite A215
Problem : Wireless networking randomly loses connectivity and can not regain connectivity, the only apparent solution is a full power down , this is not even certain to work. The card works under Windows, she hates Windows. (I love her for this) I know it's not faulty hardware , because it will work for days on end under Windows without problems.
Things I've tried : madwifi drivers (any and all versions available) : These increase stability of the signal and seem to delay the inevitable however it still happens. When using these drivers the only option is to unload them modprobe -r then reboot then remove them again and re add them. It makes no sense why this works, and if I don't remove them prior to rebooting it will not work.
ATH5K drivers : These are pretty much junk, results are unpredictable at best, sometimes it will work perfectly for a few hours, sometimes it will not work at all. Nothing is repeatable, I can't seem to force whatever condition is causing this. rfkill does not show the wifi being blocked (hard or soft), unblocking it anyway does nothing, only way to make this work and it's iffy is to fully power down wait 5-10 minutes turn it back on and it MAY decide to work.
Firmware update : Updated the Toshiba BIOS to the latest version of the firmware 2.0 no joy here either. Same issue both sets of drivers.
Tried different distros and kernels : I've tried Mint 9, 10 ,11 ; Ubuntu 10.10, 10.04 , 9.10 and 11.04 (which is currently installed) , Fedora and OpenSUSE. All are giving the same problems. I have also tried a slew of different kernels no joy from any of them (I'm not at the computer with the issue now I will post exactly what kernel versions I've used when I have access to the machine).
Another useful bit of information, the hard switch to disable/enable wifi WILL disable it but turning it back on does absolutely nothing. The hotkey does nothing at all. The bios does not have an option to disable or enable the wireless card.
I will also post the typical lsmod , lspci , iwconfig all that good stuff when I get back to the computer in question. I'm probably just going to buy a PC card for it and give up on that one, but this is driving me insane and I would really like to see it resolved even if I do replace the hardware.

Noob to Ubuntu here and I cannot access my wireless connection. It is working fine right now (wired) but I am using the TV stand as my computer desk right now so... not very practical. I tried following the "howto post a wireless issue (ticket)" but there was too much information for me to be able to put on here.
I have my SSID and my WEP. I am on Verizon DSL (only provider in my area). I tried using the wireless setting in network connections and I tried using DSL. I assumed that SSID+Password=Yay the internet works! but apparently not.

other forums to get my Zonet ZEW1642D to work on my new install of Ubuntu Studio 10.10. None of the how-tos I've found APPEAR to have worked although I guess I'm not entirely sure how I would know. There is a pair of computers at the top right of my screen by the date/time. When I right click there the following are all checked:
Enable Networking
Enable Wireless
Enable Notifications
but when I click Connection Information Auto eth0 is the only connection that comes up (which must be the wired connection I'm using to submit this) Here are the things I've tried:
1) README_STA included in the driver files downloaded from the Ralink website although I must admit this was a bit over my head
2) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1045703

Just installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and everything seems to be working nicely except I have no networking.
The card does not appear in the Network Settings GUI. The only 3 tabs I have are General, DNS, and Hosts.
A screen grab is attached.
I'm a long time Windows user trying out some of the best Linux creative apps I can find. So, Ubuntu Studio was a no brainer. I checked the manufacturer's site for linux drivers and they are available, but I don't know how current. (Edimax site, not RaLink's site.) I opened the file and it looks like it needs to be compiled and installed to work. Something I know almost nothing about. The card is listed as supported in this forum for Ubuntu 9x but I can't find information about it for 10.04
PS. I have no networking on the system but I can transfer files via USB flash drives if needed.
Some System info:
Code:
1 ) Machine Brand and Model (PC/Laptop): Dell Precision 650
2 ) Wireless Brand, Model and Wireless Chipset: 03:0c.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
3 ) check interface: robert@ubuntu:~$ ifconfig

I have just installed an Edimax EW-7612PIn PCI-E Wifi card which has an RTL8192SE chipset. This chipset is not supported under current F15 kernels so I have installed the driver and firmware from source and have that working fine. The driver can see the card and I can issue 'iwconfig' commands successfully enough to see my Wifi network.
The problem I have is that I don't understand the relationship between iwconfig and wpa_supplicatant and as I'm running a headless F15 server I cannot use the NetworkManager GUI to help me. I should also note that the Wifi network is using WPA2-Personal encryption.
This is what I have done:
Configured /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 with what I think are reasonable values (based on google searches), including the ESSID, TYPE as Wireless, etc.
Configured /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf, including using the key value returned from wpa_passphrase.
Arranged for wpa_supplicant to run from boot, using chkconfig.
However when I run 'ifconfig wlan0 up' I get the error message 'link is not ready' and indeed looking at the output from 'iwconfig wlan0' there are no configured values. I also understand that some values are configured by iwconfig and others by wpa_supplicant, however it's not clear what.
How do I permanently set iwconfig values?
How do I configure wpa_supplicant?
