I want to move to Slack, so I took a look around the web to see if it can give support to my wireless card but couldn't find any relevant info.Is it supported? Can be installed?
View 14 RepliesI'm using testing/Wheezy 64 bit: after upgrading to the latest repository kernel (2.6.38-2-amd64) my WLAN card isn't showing up unless I do a "modprobe brcm80211" or add " brcm80211" to /etc/modules.

I'm having issues with my broadcom BCM4313 wireless adapter. Everything works just fine when connected (with additional drivers & Connman), but it takes about 5 minutes to connect to my network when i just started my computer! When resuming from hibernation it goes very quick though, so just when I boot my pc it's taking forever...This is what I found in the dmesg output:

I have an Acer Aspire One D255 netbook with opensuse 11.3 installed and after several painstaking days of tinkering I successfully installed the broadcom wl drivers, and now my wifi card is operational. However, i can connect to my wireless network, but still have no internet access. I have searched the forums and google for a solution but most issues I have found that are similar to mine have been resolved once the wl drivers and firmware where installed

I recently got a new hard drive for my notebook, and was playing a little with it taking advantage of the fact that my working system is intact on my old drive. So, I installed Slackware 13.0, and ran slackpkg to get -current. Everything runs fine, except for my wireless network.
With slack13 I was using the broadcom-sta driver (wl module) and it was working perfectly. In -current I can build the wl module, and load it, but it will do nothing. The interface (eth1 in 13.0) is not created, the card is not registered, and actually nothing is logged to /var/log/messages by the wl module itself. When I load it I only get a few lines from a module it loads (ieee something, for wireless cryptography I think), but the WiFi LED is off, and it does not reacts to the keyboard (Fn-F2 is supposed to switch the wifi off and on). Basically it seems like it is actually doing *nothing*, or that maybe there is something I need to do to activate it.
The other option is b43 with b43-fwcutter. I tried it, it worked for a few minutes before dying on me saying that it can't use DMA with my device, and that I need to reconfigure the kernel to use PIO instead. And it also behaved in a weird way. The interface was not created immediately (wlan0) and I had to play with the iwconfig command to bring it up (although I don't actually remember what exactly I did to do it). Also it looks like it takes a few minutes to load the firmware, is not immediate. The third thing i got was rfkill messages in the output of dmesg, reacting to my keyboard (logging stuff like "the radio thinghy is ENABLED or DISABLED) when I tried to bring wifi up, but without actually switching the LED on.
I don't really know what is wrong. I am thinking on building my own kernel with the option b43 suggests, but before I'd like to know why wl is failing. I could very well go back to Slack13, but staying with an old kernel version due to silly hardware issues does not seems like the right choice.
I think I must say as well that the wifi is working flawless with Windows Vista and Slackware 13.
While I try to add Blue Marble widget I get this error "OpenGL shaders not supported". It's weird considering everything else on kde works great and my laptop configuration is Dell Core2Duo T 6500 2.1Ghz. Should I install any extra packages to make it work?. Also any tips/suggestions/links about improving the look and appearance of Slackware would be most welcome.

I have a problem with the built-in wireless-card of my laptop. I can connect to the wireless DSL-router using wicd (wicd-1.7.0-486-2 from /extra), wicd reports that it connects and obtains an IP-address. It then changes the status to connected. Immediately after that (may be a second later) the status changes back to disconnected and I can't reach the network.
Here some specs: Kernel: self-compiled 2.6.37-6-generic, the only option I changed from the standard generic config was to enable PAE, but I also tried it with the standard generic kernel and the huge kernel. Wireless card: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01) Firmware installed with the packages from Slackbuilds.org: network/b43-fwcutter network/b43-firmware. The wireless card is working correctly under Debian, so I think this is not a hardware issue.
I'm running slackware 12.2 and I have yet to get the b44 kernel driver working with 2.6.27.31 (custom build, b44 compiled in). Does it require a firmware cutter (ex. b43-fwcutter)? Does it work in later kernel versions out-of-the-box?
On a second note, if it is better supported in later kernels, would it be problematic to upgrade kernels (for instance, anything other than just building the new kernel via instructions in the Slackbook)?
I have searched many times but just have come across "it should work" which it doesn't, at least here...

GFX card: nVidia geForce 7150m I installed Slackware yesterday, along side my Ubuntu (yes yes, I use Ubuntu lol. I've been using it for about four years, I added Slackware to grub.cfg, using the OS prober, which added four menu entries. The first two caused kernel panic, the third worked, and I don't think I tried the fourth. (I'm pretty sure they were, in this order: generic, generic-smp, huge, and huge-smp). Using huge, I could not modprobe my wireless driver, I would get a "Invalid Module Format" error with wl, and when installing the nVidia drivers (from their site), I would get:

I then booted using a menuentry my friend gave me, created my initrd, and everything worked fine, both graphics and wireless (mostly fine). So I upgraded to -current, kernel 2.6.35.10, and I started getting the same errors as before, 'Invalid Module format' and the same thing with the nVidia drivers, although this time, it happens regardless of if I use the generic kernel, or the huge kernel. I've done heaps of Google'ing around, and nothing I found worked.
Just upgraded my kernel to 2.6.35 and now my broadcom 57780 WLAN card is not recognized. Trying to reload the proprietary driver fails. Anybody else with this specific card got it working on 2.6.35?

I tried the installing b43 drivers with internet (using ethernet)
I tried installing off the DVD using the no internet option
I even tried installing the STA drivers even though I know the 4318 chipset is not mentioned as a supported chipset.
All of these were loaded/extracted with no errors via terminal following the guidance to the letter. Now here is a problem I have not read that anyone else has run into. (maybe I just missed it). When I go: System > Administration > Additional Drivers the only additional driver that shows up is "Software Modem". I can't for the life of me figure out why the b43 and STA drivers are not showing up to activate. I can install drivers all day long, if I can't activate them, it really does become a moot point.
As I understand the rc.wireless script the command 'iwconfig wlan0 nickname ....' is always executed. On my computer this causes annoying message "Set nickname: operation not supported". I read the man for iwconfig. It seems for me that there are no particular reason to force the 'set nickname' operation.

I have been looking for tutorials that specifically instruct me as to how to install slackware 13.1 on to a windows xp. it's possible to compile the 2.6.37 kernel patched with the autogroup patch on a Slackware 13.1 system running 2.6.33.4-smp with 2.6.33.4 headers? I just compiled and installed the 2.6.37-autogroup kernel from AUR on my ARCH setup and I like it especially when using firefox with lots of tabs open and other background apps also running. I did notice a speed and smothness difference in my ARCH testing setup with this kernel patch and I can get same results in 13.1??

And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.

I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

It's a full-featured Linux distribution with a lot of applications by default, including an office suite (OpenOffice.org extended with plugins), a good internet browser (Firefox extended with plugins), a music player that supports music collection and a lot more - Exaile, a video player, and all the available codecs. It is also the first release with the innovative portable applications system. This allows you to download application from the site (modules section), place it where you like, and use it. It's just a single file, no directories. You can also use this application without installing it, directly from the internet. Besides this, you can install software with the apt-get-like system "slapt-get" and it's graphical front-end: GSlapt. The SlackBuild scripts from slackbuilds.org or from Slackware DVD usually contain --disable-static option to prevent building the .a file. And if configure script doesn't allow such option, the .a file is deleted before the package is created.I am wondering what is the reason for that? Is it just the matter of conserving disk space? Are there also other reasons?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI try to install Slackware to my IDE hard drive and boot first from Slackware DVD. After I loaded huge.s kernel, and tried to partition the hard drive using fdisk by entering "fdisk /dev/hda", I found out that the partition size is max to 3 Gigs instead of 80 Gigs.
I think the kernel is looking at my boot disk, which is around 3 Gigs. How can I make so that it looks at my IDE drive instead at my boot drive? Is there any manual that shows me how to install Linux from scratch this means I want to wipe out all my hard disk and install Slackware Linux there?
I recently bought the Alfa AWUS036h which uses the Realtek rtl8187 chipset. I am able to load the module and connect to any network, but its almost as soon as I try to load a page the connection drops. It never stays connected for more than 30 seconds. My other computers using the same adapter in the same spot work fine, unfortunately there not running slackware. I've tried compiling the newest stable kernel and checked the rd.inet1.conf settings.
