Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Is Missing - Activate?
Mar 10, 2011
My Network manager is missing (it is usually has a short-cut on the desktop-bar, which are monitor pictures, next to the sound short-cut). Does anybody know how to activate it again (terminal-based command or etc)? See my attachment, i made a circle sign on the missing network-manager.

I had installed Fedora 12. I am using 4 LAN Cards. All these cards were configured using network manager, but i am not able to acivate /deactivate these cards using acivate /deactivate buttons since they got disabled. I could activate the cards by running /etc/init.d/restart network. Anyone knows why the acivate /deactivate buttons in network manager are disabled .

I have just started using fedora 13 and I am not sure if i am in the right area but here goes...today I was online in my fedora 13 partition on my laptop and I had been online for quite a while then I shut down my machine to recharge the battery then a couple hours later I turned it back on and all of a sudden my network manager applet was missing and I could not connect to the internet, I opened firefox and tried to get to my homepage but it basically just told me that I wasnt connected..
I suspected at first for some strange reason that MAYBE it was my NIC so I booted up into my vista partition and low and behold the internet works fine, so the problem is on the linux side, I have tried every command nm-applet but it just keeps saying an instance of nm-applet is already running, I have no clue how to restore the network manager and get my internet back and the only other piece of information I have is that earlier today I did do a bunch of security updates but the internet was working fine all day even after several reboots through out the day.

I was able to go online yesterday using Ubuntu, but now I cannot. For some reason, when I ping an address, like [URL], it tells me this: ping: unknown host [URL]
I looked at ifconfig by typing it into the terminal prompt, and this is what I get:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 08:00:27:77:07:0b
inet6 addr: fe80::a00:27ff:fe77:70b/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:815 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
[Code].....
I cannot find network manager from my panel, how can I get back online now? I am online using a different system on my computer as I speak via Windows.

For some reason when I booted today the network manager icon to disconnect and connect to different wireless networks was missing. I've read various post and have been unable to resolve this issue. Here is what I've tried.
1. Clicking in Add Panel and adding network monitor. This seems to be not included on the list of choices.
2. Clicking in Add Panel and click the Add Notification choice. This didn't seem to add anything to the panel.
3. Remove the Notification area and then re-add it. Did this and not the area is blank except for my dropbox icon. I don't have the date, logon or logoff dropdown, or network manager icon anymore. I've rebooted several times.
I can't connect to my wireless network anymore. Is there another way to manager wireless connections other then that panel tool?

Just installed (clean install) of Ubuntu 10.10 on an old desktop pc. The network manager icon is missing, Buy the way i had to run install from safemode. As I was having problems with login in, I kept trying to login in to the normal desktop but Ubuntu kept thinking about it for approximetly ten seconds and then asking me to login in again repeatedly. however when i switch to guest user on the guest desktop the network manager icon appears. I have used this icon to enter a mobile broadband account and to connect up to and down load all updates surf etc.Read a number posts and find this problem with the network manager icon are quite common. On the main (problem) desktop i have Tried installed a new panel but unable to add the notification area can add other icons Tried adding the notification area to the old panel get brief white flash on panel Removed the other icons and reinstalled these icons and tried adding the notification area.looked at "!nm-applet-sm-disable" appears ok

New to ubuntu. I love the OS. Everything works great except for the network connection. It tells me I need to activate the b43 drivers with fwcutter, but here are the following problems:
1) I can't download and install the drivers b/c I can't connect to the internet wired or wireless.
2) I can't find the website to download the appropriate drivers (I've looked for hours)
3)I'm not too sure how to install them since I don't have a background in coding.
I really like ubuntu, I just need network working.

I just upgraded my Debian stretch via apt-get and I noticed that the network manager is missing at least 2 icons: the mobile broadband icon and the settings icon. I haven't found any bug reports or other information about how to restore them. The icons were there after initial installation of version 8.2.0 from DVD.
KDE Plasma version 5.4.2
Qt Version 5.5.1

The Volume control and network manager icons are not visible in the notification area..
I sure its has nothing to do with
Add to panel-->Notification area....beacuse the notification area is already there..
but the icons are not visible
the only way that I can make the visible is by typing code...
for volume control.. Only then they become visible in the notification area
Both, the network manager and volume control are mentioned in the "Start-up programs"

I was running Ubuntu 9.10 on my HP G70 laptop and did an upgrade using upgrade manager to Ubuntu 10.04.
Since I haven't been able to get wifi connection or wired working. The Network Manager applet is missing from the notification area and if I try to run nm-applet manually it says it is already running. I tried killing the process and then running it manually in the terminal and although the process appears to be running it is missing from the panel.
Booting into the live cd has the applet working fine so something in the upgrade process must have failed.
I tried changing the theme to see if it displays in other themes but had no luck.
I also tried to log into kde but kde seems to be broken. When I log into it after the splash screen all I get is a black screen with only my mouse pointer.

I've been running F10 since it first came out, and I was happy to see it was the first Fedora release that automatically recognized my Atheros wireless card. I have to run system-config-network and press the "activate" button when I start the machine, but that's ok and no big deal. But today, for whatever reason,in system-config-network, the "activate" and "deactivate" buttons are grayed out and I cannot start the device so I have no network access. When I boot the machine into Windows, it works fine.

I have downloaded and installed Fedora 10.Now I am setting up the network and in the 'network configuration' it finds the wireless device (ralink) in the 'hardware' section of the configuration - I set this to eth0 (it originally set itself to wan0 and I still had the same problems, now it doesn't give me the option to put it back to wan0).Now I goto the devices tab and try to set up the device with eth0 - which it seems to find. But when I goto activate the device it tells me that eth0 cannot be found

I recently downloaded the Vienna3 mouse cursor theme and there is an animation where it turns into some cool looking thing when I drag a window. but early this morning I noticed that it has stopped working. I also installed the "slick black" theme that I got from gnome-look.org the night before but I customized it to run the Vienna cursor theme. but that drag animation was still working. Additional info: I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and compiz fusion and I have gtk 2 set as my decorator

I recently fixed an annoying problem and I thought it would be nice to share my solution here. The problem was that after a cycle of suspend/resume, Network Manager would only auto-connect to the same network as it was previously connected to. So, for example, if I suspended my laptop at home, and then I went to school and resumed it, it would try to connect to the home network, and then just give up. It would not connect to the school network unless I explicitly told it to.irst, I'll describe the fix. If you're having this problem, you can this. Copy the following:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
case "$1" in
[code]....
