Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04: Unable To Use Eth0 And Usb0 At The Same Time?

Nov 20, 2010

I have no telephone connection at home, so I use my cellphone to connect to the internet. Network manager reports this interface as a "wired connection", usb0, using the cdc_ether driver.I also have a router at home, so I can connect my netbook to my desktop wirelessly. My desktop computer connects to the router via ethernet connection, and network manager reports it as eth0.

When I had Ubuntu 8.04 installed on my desktop, I could use my phone, via usb0 interface, to connect to the internet at the same time as using the router on eth0. But now I have 10.04 on the computer, and it won't let me use both interfaces at the same time: I have to unconnect the router before I can use usb0.

Ubuntu Networking :: Using Eth0 And Wlan0 At The Same Time?

Jul 15, 2010

I have a wired connection going to my router, which is encrypted with WPA2-PSK. That works fine. I hooked up a WUSB54G v4 (Linksys USB Wireless Adapter), and used ndiswrapper to install the drivers from Vista to make it compatible with WPA2. Also configured the /etc/network/interfaces with the wpasupplicant lingo to make it all work. So if I do that, my eth0 will not work anymore. Also on a side note my network manager stops with displaying in the top panel. Not a problem I can run /etc/init.d/networking (re)start and dhclient eth0 (wlan0) and all the other commands that are necessary to make it work.

Back to the problem, so I hook up wlan0 with the settings and eth0 stops working. I want to use the wlan0 solely for the purpose of my media server. The eth0 is there for my internet and that is it .

How can I keep 'em separated?

Fedora Networking :: Having Terrible Time Getting IP Address For Eth0

Dec 19, 2009

I am trying to get networking up on an old PII which I have successfully installed with FC4. There is a link and activity on the onboard interface because I see the indicator lights. The controller is a 3Com PCI 3c905 Boomerang 100baseTx @ 0xdc80.The only message returned by dmesg about eth0 is "Dropping NETIF_F_SG since no checksum feature."The driver module, 3c59x, is loaded as well as the mii module that depends on it.There is something about "unknown parameter`irq'" in the dmesg text regarding the driver.I noticed that eth0 is sharing an IRQ with the UHCI Host Controller. That should not be a problem, but it should not be necessary. And I could do away with USB if this is a conflict and that is the easiest way to solve it.When I drop to console at runlevel 3, and call dhclient, which is installed, I get a message telling me there is no reply to the dhcp request.I don't think the problem is on the router/switch side.

Why 'eth1' instead of 'usb0' ? Does behaviour of 'eth1' is same as 'usb0'?

Red Hat / Fedora :: XEN And Networking - Interface Comes Up As USB0

Apr 19, 2010

I'm running CentOS 5.4 and have problems with a USB-Ethernet network interface. It works in another, very similar environment but now I added Virtualization when installing the system. The interfaces comes up as usb0 - as usual, and I'm sending and receiving packets (PPPoE) but there seems to be a link missing so that the ppp session can be build. I wondered if this has to do with the Xen virtual environment running which installed a lot of virtual interfaces and bridges, but not for the USB interface.

The problem is that for PPPoE server, the interface must not have an IP address assigned - not an option when creating a new host interface. But even when I do so, the interface seems unlinked somehow. Funny thing, I can monitor the incoming and outgoing packets using Wireshark. I have not (yet) set up a virtual machine/guest system but the default machine is running.

Networking :: Unable To Locate Eth0 With Ifconfig In Fedora 12 ?

Apr 26, 2010

I've got a vmware install of Fedora 12 running as a server. This install has the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file configured with the proper info and the service has been restarted. When I run ifconfig I only get the loopback interface, when I run ifconfig -a I can get the eth0, but without the pre-configured ip address. When I enter ifconfig eth0 up I can activate the interface, but without the afore mentioned ip address. I need to be able to yum ssh, install it, and run it with rsa keys. Can do none of this without an interface obviously.

Networking :: Eth0 Fixed IP - Eth1 DHCP Gateway - Access To Eth0?

Aug 19, 2009

5.10 Breezy configured as machine controller. Works great eth0 is a fixed IP to communicate with controller comms board. Not easy at all to alter - the comms board is hard coded to listen on eth0 for commands.

I can use eth1 as the default gateway and ping google.com, etc. But when I now attempt to communicate with the controller with netcat, e.g.

Code: echo !HH | nc 192.168.1.6 80

I obviously never get an answer since the request is passed via eth1. Using the -g option with netcat doesn't work either. I had a look at iptables but it doesn't seem to be able to do what I want. How I can still use eth0 as my communication port to the controller whilst eth1 is the default gateway?

Networking :: Production Server With Static IPs On Eth0 And Eth0:1 - Getting Private LAN On Eth1?

Jul 1, 2010

I have two servers on a vlan at my datacentre/colocation and previously both servers had public IPs on their eth0 interfaces. The servers are HP ProLiant DL360s - one is a G4 and one is a G5 The newer G5 is now the LAMP server and the G4 has been retired and I want to repurpose it as an iSCSI target using openfiler freenas or similar.

My G5 has public/static IPs lashed to the eth0 physical interface and the eth1 is not configured to do anything yet. The G4 will have both interfaces available - perhaps one for ssh access from one of my static public IPs and the other to be a private IP on the local vlan. Here is what I am trying to get my head around...

The G5
eth0 - Public IP - full LAMP services on two or three virtual interfaces
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.1
The G4
eth0 - Public IP for ssh
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.2

Because my traffic between eth1 on these boxes is via private IPs on the local private vlan it doesn't add to my quota for bandwidth. How do I go about configuring the routing and gateways and other aspects of this so that I can run a private IP space network between the eth1s and still serve the outside world from the eth0s...

I am afraid that if I assign the private IPs to the eth1 interfaces the routing may either not work or interfere with the access to the production internet facing interfaces (eth0s).

Ubuntu Networking :: Grub2 Is Unable To Deal With Mounting The Samba Shares On Lan At Boot Time

Oct 15, 2010

I've been having terrible trouble with my 64bit Desktop v10.04 ever since I upgraded it. Has been a long battle - but I think I have it down to just one remaining issue which I suspect is more related to the network than to the upgrade. So I'll ask here also... The old system always used grub as the bootloader, and has always worked just fine. I have now had to do a complete fresh install, which incorporated a change to grub2 (first time I have used it).

It would seem now, that grub2 is unable to deal with mounting the samba shares on my lan at boot time. The boot always fails, dumping the user to the cli rather than the gui desktop. The error given indicates that the network is unreachable. Most users of the system have given up on Ubuntu altogether because of this, and fallen back into the clutches of the evil empire (the machine dual boots XP). If I log in, and manually startx to open the desktop, the network is there, and the shares are mounted just fine. Everything seems to be working ok - but for crashing out of the boot process with network errors. The fstab file follows, in case there is some cause there I'm not seeing (I have edited names and passwords prior to posting)...

A.I have long boot up time.I think it's because of the eth0 network search which I don't use.I have an intel wireless 5300 card running. How can I speed up the boot time, i.e. disable or change the eth0 at boot, the searching?

B:When I restart or shutdown, the screen flashes repeatedly and gets some garbled colors along the top before finally rebooting looks like windows ME or something). This vostro has an intel x4500HD vid chipset in it.

C.How do I get into gnome configuration editor to turn on Metacity compositing? Alt-F2 and run gconf-editor doesn't do it. I don't do compiz, but need compositing.

Fedora :: Unable Get Wireless Working After Connecting To Eth0?

Aug 12, 2010

I installed F13 on an Acer laptop for a friend who is just beginning with Linux. This laptop has the dreaded Broadcom chipset and is using the b43 driver. When it was first installed, wireless was automatically detected and worked fine. However, as usual, there was about 200MB of updates after the install, and the wireless was downloading extremely slowly, so I connected eth0 just to complete the updates. Ever since, the wireless will not work. When the machine is booted, wireless is shown as disabled in Network Manager. I remembered that there was a wireless switch on the front of the laptop and switching it on allows me to check the enable wireless box, but wireless says device not ready.

ifconfig wlan0 up returns:

Code:

SIOCSFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill

I assumed this meant that the switch was in OFF position, but it is not. iwconfig shows the wireless is detected. It appears that there is a script for rf_kill somewhere in the filesystem that is keeping this from working.
