I have set 'ONBOOT=no' in interface script '/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:2' but my interface bring up at boot time, what is the problem , I have checked it 3 or 4 diff os/machine but the same issue. Can anyone please help me to disable virtual IP's at boot time that network script make it up every boot time.

I found multiple sites explaining how to add IPs to a network interface as virtual interface like eth0:0. However I can add IPs to an interface as well using the ip command: ip a a 192.168.2.2/24 dev eth0 What I want to know is how I can make this persistent on rhel/centos.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am using Arch Linux and want to disable console messages which are displayed when the kernel boots. I have tried the quiet and loglevel=2 options in /boot/grub/menu.1st as given below:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/c6dbfcdc-fcd8-498e-9182-f3bddc4f05ff ro loglevel=2
However I am still seeing console messages at boot. I used grub-install after the changes.
Any ideas where I am going wrong?
During installation I set eth0 to use dhcp to get an IP address. I then installed gnome and networkmanger which handles my interfaces and works fine. But during bootup the system pauses for 5 seconds or so while it polls for dhcp. It then times out and gives me a 169.254.xx which is then replaced when networkmanager starts up at the end of bootup.
How do I stop the polling to cut out the 5 seconds?
My network name is eth2 it was changed by some reason and now i got these errors... i installed, reinstalled, re re installed, tried to run the asistant but no luck :/

I'm running a dual boot Ubuntu 10.04/Backtrack 4 (Ubuntu 8.10) system. I can get internet in the BT4 side but not in the Lucid side. In Lucid I can ping my router, and the network manager says I'm good to go, but I can't get to any web sites. It all started when I tried to put my laptop on another network by mimicking the settings of a computer I had just unplugged from the network. MAC address and all.

I'm trying to prevent users from accessing the grub menu, but setting the timeout to 0 doesn't cut it because a user can hold down ESC during boot.At the moment, it seems that my only option is to set a password for grub. But I was hopping that there is a better way where I can disable that feature completely.

ifconfig -a returns only the loopback interfaces lo and sit0. The output of dmesg | grep -I 'eth' is:

I'm having trouble getting my Ubuntu 10.04 machine (Sony Vaio VGN-SR490) to connect to the Internet by way of an Ethernet cable connected directly to my router.
I'm able to connect to the Internet using this same cable using a Windows machine, so there's something wrong with the way Linux is configured.
How do I got about figuring out what the problem is and solving it?

It looks like the network adapters list is empty. I will now install both Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux dual-boot. I'm still not able to access the internet, even through Windows. I'm wonder if this could be a hardware problem with the computer or a problem with the router itself. Other computers can connect to this same router, and work fine. (That's how I'm posting this after all!)
Some time throughout the night last night eth0 stopped working entirely, I could not resolve dns or any thing. Oddly though eth0:1 and eth0:2 worked perfectly with a ping -c 10 -I eth0:2 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx but still could not resolve domain names. My nameservers are good as i have tested them on my other machine. My setup had been working fine for quitte some time and i did not make any changes besides updating webpages, it is a server running Debian Lenny. Unfortunatly since eth0:1 was working for the most part i was trying to change the IP's in the config and accidentally killed the settings using webmin so I cant post to many details at the moment until my host for the dedicated gets my /etc/network/interfaces restored but in the meantime i have searched all over google to try to find an answer to the original problem but cannot so i would like to prepared for when the server is accessible again.

So far, I got it down to about 40 seconds (from 2:33! -- dosfsck was running every boot). I don't use LVM (I am dual booting with Windows and it's hard enough with static partitions), and I have tried to disable LVM in every way I can imagine except uninstalling it (system-config-kickstart depends on it), but I still see it being initialized at boot time. How do I prevent the system from even considering LVM during boot??
My bootchart is here, and in case it is useful to anyone, my bootchart.tgz and boot.log..I'm running Fedora 14, and it's up to date.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I create virtual ethernet interface and do a ping -I <v_int> <host> the outgoing address is the one of the physical interface and NOT the virtual interface.Is there no chance that trafic will go out with virtual interface address??Incoming trafic is done well i.e. responds to the virtual interface have the virtual address.
My problem is that I have 2 modems and want to check both default gw behind the modems.
If I do a "normal" ping both are reachable over default route even the modem which is not the default route will not work because ping goes over the working modem.So I have 2 routing tables and want to route the virtual interface to one modem the other to the other modem
These days I see the disk check that is popping up when my Ubuntu is booting up quite frequently. It says 'press C to cancel' but C (or Shift C or CTRL C or CTRL ALT C) does not have any effect. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE reboots but again ends up in the vicious loop of disk check. How to bypass it? When I need to critically enter the desktop for an urgent pressing info waiting for 20 to 25 minutes disk check is kind of difficult.

The guest installation did not work so i removed it along with the virtual disk. Now everytime when i boot to ubuntu, after inputting my password in the login screen, it takes much longer to load the system. And during the loading time the disk activity indicator light blinks indicating the harddisk is actually busy loading the system.
I decided to search around for a possible answer and force reprofiling ureadahead does the trick Now boot time is back to what it used to be

I have two network interfaces on my computer but only one of them is connected to an Ethernet cable. Until now on every Fedora release, the activated primary interface has been named as eth0 and everything has always worked well without any problem. Recently I switched to Fedora Core 12 and surprisingly I observed that for the first time, my primary interface has been considered by the system to be eth1 instead of eth0. I tried to replace the content of ifcfg-eth0 by ifcfg-eth1, yet system gave me an error that there was MAC address mismatching. I conserved their MAC addresses in their files and just replaced other connection parameters ( such as IP ADDR, NETWORK, NETMASK, etc.) but it did't work. When I do "server network restart", the command blocks.
As I try to install oracle on this system, regarding the fact that oracle requires static network configuration on the primary network interface, I don't know how to proceed in order to set eth0 as my primary interface (or rather set the current eth1 to eth0 because it is actually eth1 that refers to my activated primary network card).Just one more time, I would like to remark, that with previous versions of the Fedora Core, on the same computer (with the very same two network cards) I never had problem and I had installed oracle on the system with success, having the statically configured eth0 correctly detected by the system.
