Ubuntu :: NetworkManager.state Changes Not Saving On Reboot

Mar 12, 2011

This is my last attempt at solving this issue before I have to return to windows as I need to contact family via web. I am unable to connect to the wireless network at home since upgrading to Ubuntu 10 desktop. It worked fine on v9. I reinstalled a full U 10 version but same issue. I am trying to enable wireless in the file mentioned as this seems to solve most posters issues but for some reason when I reboot it loses the update. I've tired logged in as su and sudo i but no joy.

Fedora :: What's The State Of NetworkManager In RHEL

Jul 28, 2011

I've always used the network init service to manage my network interfaces on headless servers and used NetworkManager on desktop installs. Lately it seems that NetworkManger is becoming more and more integrated into network management even on servers. I have a RHEL6 server in my lab that runs NM without any Gnome components installed and I've noticed in Fedora NM becoming more tightly coupled with the system-config-network related services.

I'm asking because this is a "highly connected" server, with two redundant NICs on each of two different networks with a bond interface associating each pair for redundancy. Every time the server reboots it fails to configure its default route correctly. I know how to configure the network using the standard /etc/sysconfig/network and ifcfg-* scripts. Is NM fully integrated with these configuration files?

Ubuntu :: Xubuntu Hibernation Restarts After Saving State?

Jun 17, 2010

I have been running Xubuntu Lucid for a couple of days and so far the only problem I have been having is with hibernation. When I hibernate, it saves the state, shuts off the computer, but then the computer starts again.

I have looked around a bit in the hibernation scripts (/etc/acpi/hibernate.sh) and changed some of the pm configuration files (added "HIBERNATE_MODE = shutdown" to the end of /etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module) to no avail.

My computer is an IBM ThinkCentre. I am not exactly sure on the specific model, but I believe it is m51.

EDIT: If it makes any difference, this was an Ubuntu install that I changed to a Xubuntu install by doing "apt-get remove liborbit2" (I found this instruction on a website) and then "apt-get install xubuntu-desktop".

OpenSUSE :: NetworkManager Error: Invalid State

Jun 30, 2011

After updating from 11.3 to 11.4 the networkmanager stopped working for me. When I hover over the KDE NetworkManager icon it says Error: Invalid state. If I click it, it says Network Management disabled and checkboxes (Enable networking and enable wireless - both checked). I already tried removing /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state and restarting the network management (/etc/init.d/network restart). Also reinstalling the NetworkManager package.

Debian Multimedia :: Settings Were Not Saving Through Reboot

Sep 9, 2010

Initially, Debian detected my M-Audio soundcard right off, and things were going great, until I tried to get a Logitech webcam working. Got video going, but no audio, so I installed cheese, alsa-base and alsa-utils, and played around with settings according to copious forum threads dedicated to the problem of Linux and webcams, all to no avail. Then I had NO SOUND, until I did a alsa-conf, which detected and (re)set my M-Audio card, until reboot, then again, NO SOUND. Settings were not saving through reboot.

So I purge removed alsa-base and alsa-utils, hoping that things would magically revert to pre-webcam experiment. Still no sound. I have given up on the webcam idea; I'll use my XP Pro laptop for that. But I need sound on this Linux box. Oh and when I'm playing ....., etc. the soundcard itself is making chatter noises to the beat of the music. This soundcard was working perfectly before I started the webcam debacle, so it's not a hardware issue.

Ubuntu :: Waking Up From Suspended State?

Jun 20, 2011

I dual boot both Windows and Linux and I often put my computer to "sleep" at night so it's easy to wake up the next morning. In Windows I just need to press a few keys and my computer comes to life, in Linux this doesn't happen and I have to actually go for the power button. (This wouldn't be so bad if the computer wasn't in a hard to reach place in a cupboard) At the moment I have a USB hub which my keyboard and mouse plug into, but for the sake of testing I plugged a second USB keyboard directly into the machine itself, again neither wake it. Doing a bit of research I have discovered that the wakeup devices are stored in /proc/acpi/wakeup The contents of the file by "cat" are as follows:

Code:

monotoko@KatieIV:~$ cat /proc/acpi/wakeup
DeviceS-state Status Sysfs node
PCE2 S4*disabled pci:0000:00:02.0

[code]...

At this point I have reached a dead end, how do I tell the acpi wakeup to accept input from USB keyboard as a kickstart?

Ubuntu :: State Of External Monitor Support

Jan 13, 2010

My experience with external monitors in Linux is harrying at best. It's getting better, but it still ain't perfect. My current experience (I have an nVidia card, with nVidia drivers, on a Vostro laptop):

Turn on computer (booting Karmic).
Connect external monitor
Click on System->Preferences->Display
Redirect to nVidia's tool
Perform at least 8 more clicks to enable secondary monitor.
Realize resolution isn't optimal and set it with another few clicks.
Click Apply
Accept changes
Quit, then really quit, the app.

I always have to set the resolution, it doesn't detect it automatically. The main screen is *always* on the external monitor no matter my settings. I'm screwed if I unplug the monitor but forget to go through steps 1-8, this time disabling the external monitor. I have to replug it in, then turn it off, then I can unplug it. If I unplug the external monitor and plug in another one (going through steps 1-8 twice more) with different resolution capabilities (e.g. a projector), the settings get all messed up again.

Why can't adding an external monitor be automatic? It nearly is on OS X for instance. I plug it in, and it automatically detects the monitor and makes it a secondary monitor, or mirrors them, or turns it on and turns off the laptop screen. All the while being consistent about it. When I unplug the monitor, it knows instantly that I've done that, and reconfigures the laptop screen once again.

I imagine the answer is because no one has stepped up to do it yet, or it's in progress. So my question: what *is* the state of external monitor codes in Linux, and are there any plans to implement them in Lucid? Further, what would be a project, with *user friendly* context, to which I could tune in?

Or, am I not aware of the "right way" to do it?

I define user friendly as roughly the level of kernelnewbies.org . That is, kn.org is my gauge of what I can understand.

Ubuntu Installation :: Will Not Install To New Solid State Drive

Jun 12, 2010

Had a laptop with a Hardy install - my two year old knocked it on the floor and after that it no longer recognized the drive, and I could hear the hard drive read head hit the platter when it tried to read it.

I bought a new Kingston 128GB solid state drive to replace my old 40GB drive - figure it will be more robust.

I tried installing Lucid, and it stopped after partitioning the drive and was unable to format it. I attempted to use my old Hardy install disks, and had the same issue. I spent time with Kingston tech support, they had me try a few things, then RMA'd me a new drive. New drive still had the same error.

I figured something else must've broke and let it be for a while. Today, just for the heck of it, I attempted to install XP on it. Flawless. So, it's not a hardware issue.

Any known issues with the Ubuntu installer and Laptop SATA-2 Solid State Drives? (I'll put more details in a later post if needed, don't have them at this very moment)
