Ubuntu Networking :: Get Into Network.state File To Make Changes?

Nov 8, 2010

I've recently upgraded to 10.10 and am having the same problems as with all the previous versions. I have no eth0 connection at this moment, only lo. I have an Hp pavilion about three years old with a onboard ethernet, connected to router and wired broadband. The thing is, when I am in Windows, the internet will also drop, going into "local only." I can always get that back though by running the network diagnose. Another thing. How to I get into the network.state file to make changes?

Ubuntu :: Make Deluge Share 'STATE' Folder Across Windows?

Feb 20, 2011

I'm dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. I use Deluge on both boots. Both instances of Deluge share a default download location on the Windows partition. I would like both instances of Deluge to share it's 'State' folder, which is where Deluge stores the .torrent files it is currently using and the information about their progress and such. On the windows side this location is%APPDATA%delugestateand onUbuntu~/.config/deluge/stateI found them, they look good.I can read/write to the windows side from Ubuntu, the windows partition is automounted, yada yada. I can even autoadd the .torrents from the Windows location when I run the Linux Deluge. But what I want is for the Windows side to function normally while altering the Ubunutu instance of Deluge to use the %APPDATA%delugestate directory on the windows partition instead of it's default~/.config/deluge/stateSuch that when I add torrents in Ubuntu (primary OS) and switch to Windows, Deluge will be productively downloading/seeding while I'm wasting my life with Starcraft.Possible

Software :: Restore To Original State After A 'make Install' ?

Feb 26, 2011

I was in real doubt where to put this, so I hope I picked the right forum; otherwise, my apologies!

I want to build Roadsend PHP on my system. There seems to be no way to do this with the package manager, so I have to build it from source.

Turns out it depends on something called 'Bigloo'. Again no luck with the package manager, so I had to build this one from source too.

I took version 3.0c (Roadsend website recommends this version), did a

Code:
./configure && make && make install

, which did the job. Builing Roadsend worked, but I got a runtime error, which had to do with the Bigloo version.

No problem, I tought, then I'll just install Bigloo 3.1a. I did a "make uninstall" in the 3.0c dir, and tried to build 3.1a. This also worked, but now when I try to make Roadsend, I reports:

Code:
*** ERROR:bigloo.heap:
Release mismatch -- Heap is `3.0c', Bigloo is `3.1a'

So, somehow, there are still traces of 3.0c on my system. Maybe some file that didn't get deleted or some table entry that hasn't been undone?

My question is: How can I remove all traces of this version? Apparently, "make uninstall" is not thorough in this case.

And: Is there a general solution to remove everything when I did a "make install". So that my system is in the same state as it was before I ran the command?

Ubuntu :: Make With Make File Yields Error - /usr/bin/javac: Cannot Execute Binary File

Nov 17, 2010

When I try to compile some Java code on Ubuntu 10.10 (kernel 2.6+) using make and a Makefile.

I get an error indicating that the make utility cannot execute the java compile command (javac).

The error reads: /bin/bash: line 6: .: /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac: cannot execute binary file

I am executing make as root. I have enabled permissions on all directories in the path /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac and on javac itself.

I get this error whether using a jdk installed via ubuntu apt-get, or whether I install the jdk myself. And I get it using either Java 1.5 or 1.6

My machine has an 80386 processor. I notice the make utility is built for i686-pc-linux-gnu

However, I can manually compile using javac.

I can compile calling javac from within a bash script.

I can compile using the java compiler gcj from the command line: gcj --main=HelloWorld HelloWorld.java -o HelloWorld.exe

But I cannot compile java code from the makefile. Any reasons why I might be getting this error?

Fedora Hardware :: HP PSC 1200 Series Over Network - Printer State Idle

Dec 4, 2009

F12 64 bit machine, connects to a Windows share to which a HP PSC 1210 is connected through a USB connection. Printer is set to share, nicknamed "Asterix". When the printer is set up through F12, I select under Network printer "Windows printer via Samba". I browse, find the printer, and click verify. The printer is accessible. Then I finish the installation, ordering a test print. Here the strange things start happening (attached some screenshots to back the story up).

1) No error messages appear that I can find. No cups-errors, no other errors pop up on the F12 machine. The print appears and disappears from the "Document Print Status (Asterix)" window. Only on the Printer Properties page do I see something strange: Printer state: Idle - procession page 2.
2) In the Windows machine, I also can't find any error messages. The print appears in the Printer list, and stays there. The printer comes to life, checks its cartridges, rolls some wheels, and then decides to do nothing more. When I select the print and click on Properties, the default priority is 1, but when I move it up to 99, nothing changes. The only strange thing here is, that the document, according to the Windoze machine, has 0 pages, yet is some 20MB.
And nothing ever happens.

Things I think it's not:
Firewall issue. The print obviously slips through to the other end.
Faulty driver issue. Directly from the Windoze machine, and if plugged into the USB of the F12 machine, does it print perfectly fine.

Ubuntu :: File Browser Will Not Maintain State Mounted To Samba Share?

May 12, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.4 [64bit] on a AMD dual core with 4gb of RAM. My Problem: I am mounting to a Windows share from my Ubuntu box and everything is working as expected however, when a file is added, deleted, or modified the Ubuntu File browser does not reflect that change until the next refresh. The Windows users with Explorer will reflect the change immediately and automatically.

Is there a way to make the Ubuntu File Browser respond like Explorer when mounting to a Windows share? I call this behavior "maintaining state".

Ubuntu Installation :: Restore The Home/username File To A Default State?

Jul 1, 2010

System Specs:

CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Extreme X9450
Memory: 4GB, Patriot DDR3 PC3-10666 1333Mhz
MoBo: ASUS P5E3 Delux
OpSys: Ubuntu 10.4 (64Bit)

Short Description: I wanted to see what would happen if I upgraded from Kubuntu 8.04 (32bit) to Ubuntu 10.4 (64bit) by copying my home directory then restoring it after the upgrade. It almost worked sans a few interesting problems that I'm hoping might teach me a bit more about how Ubuntu works.

Detailed Description:

1. I copied my home directory to another hard disk.

2. I let the installation disk for Ubuntu 10.4 (64bit) reformat and overwrite the disk that contained Kubuntu 8.04 (32bit) and chose to maintain the partition and swap size for that disk.

3. Once I worked out some bugs in the hardware and got the OS up and running smoothly, I "merged" my home directory with the backup I had created in step one. (Merge was an option given to me when I was attempting to paste the files copied from the backup disk.)

4. It should also be noted that I was trying for a while last night to install TrueCrypt. In order to do that I had to check its "sig" file. The GUI for the gpg installation was complaining that I didn't have gtk+-2.0 installed so I installed gtk (I think it might have been 2.4 or whatever the most recent one was) from source without any errors. It got late so I gave up on attempting to install TrueCrypt any further.

The Results: This morning the computer seemed to boot faster than it had been before, but I was left without a functioning Theme manager. It will open, and I can click on all of its features, but nothing seems to do anything. For example: If I right click on the desktop and choose "Change Desktop Background" Then select "Get more themes online", nothing happens. Also if I select the "theme" tab, there are only two themes listed when there used to be about 9 by default.

Questions: 1.) Is there a way to restore the files that are important for correct system operation (possibly all the files starting with a dot ".*") in my home directory to there default state like they would have been from a fresh install, but without doing a fresh install and without loosing any of the documents or archives in my home file?

2.) Is this even the correct approach or might this cause more problems? For example, if your computer had this problem would you try and restore the home directory, or would you troubleshoot each problem as it arises one at a time until everything became stable?

3.) What could I do next to continue troubleshooting the theme manager?

I'll keep researching and trying to find some links that can help while I wait for your responses. If I find anything that helps I'll post the fix here.

Ubuntu Networking :: Universal Network Folder Syntax For The Network And Other "special" File Systems?

Jun 16, 2011

Paths displayed in Nautilus appear to be just that. Nautilus private syntax. Esp with respect to anything "special". Apparently when you hand a path like this to a program to open, you get a folder in your home directory: smb://cyberstorm/c_drive/

At least that is what my program does with it. A folder called smb: in my home directory. Probably because the default folder for the program is the home directory [~]. Is there a universal network folder syntax for the network and other "special" file systems?

I see things like: network:/// and computer:/// showing up in "properties" dialogs for some things. But these are useless to a program apparently.

At least a program written in Qt. Is this a Qt problem, or a problem with Ubuntu not yet making the network a first class citizen in the world of paths? Who do I complain to? Time for the network to be a first class citizen, right?

Ubuntu Networking :: Auto Run Script Whenever Interface Connection State Changes?

Aug 14, 2010

Upon boot of my system, I auto run a script that customizes the routing table (i.e., route -n). However, after the system is already booted up and has been running, if a network connection is dropped and re-added, like if one of the several network cables to the machine is temporarily disconnected or other, then the routing table is modified -- I assume by network manager. Presently, I need to manually re-run my script to re-customize the routing table.

I would like to have the script just run whenever there is any change to the connection state of interfaces. Anyone know how to tie in some kind of event trigger that can execute a script upon change in interfaces connection state (i.e., detect change in connection state and run the script)?
