Ubuntu :: Command For Altering Maximization State Of Window
Jan 6, 2011
Is there a command I can implement into a script that I am working on to change the maximization state of a window (maximize/restore)? I know there is a keyboard shortcut (Alt + F10), and I'm not interested in doing that.

I have either ubuntu 9.x or 10.z.When the upper panel displayed double graphic postings of the icons (such as clock : clock ), I right clicked and selected remove. I was expecting one of the icons to be removed. Instead, the whole upper panel disappeared. Now I only have a GoogleEarth icon on my desktop main field. On the bottom panel, there are only two null desktop icons and one trash folder icon. How do I bring up a terminal window from this state?

I've been having trouble with this for quite some time now, I've attempted to find a solution to this problem but no matter how far I look I cannot seem to find anything revolving any aspect related to this. At certain points in time there are moments where my Ubuntu windows "Firefox, Calculator, Terminal, Etc." become white thus being unreadable, However I can input commands into them and pages/programs will still load through out them. Although there is a simple solution to this problem that works part of the time if I alter one of the windows by either maximising it or minimising it, I'll either have fixed the problem for the time being or crashed Ubuntu thus resulting in a boot to the login screen.
My computer specs are as follows.
Navidia Geforce 9400 Gt
AMD Athlon(tm) 7550 Dual-Core Processor
W/ 3 GB Ddr2 ram
I am running Ubuntu 11 - Narwhal
If I run this command lspci I this message 00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] (rev a2)Which suggests that this problem is probably occurring around my Gpu, If I unplug my Vga cable from my on-board graphics card into my Navidia graphics card I get a message stating that an input could not be found. I've tried installing the latest Navidia graphics driver for my Gpu but I get "You appear to be on a X server" followed by an installation failure. I read a forum post on switching screens using ctrl+alt+f1-f6 but if I use this command I get a blue screen until switching back to f7.
I have done everything in my power with my limited knowledge of ubuntu and I seem to have failed, If I were capable of doing it alone I would not be here.

With the new Intel G2 SSDs coming out, I'm thinking about upgrading my hard drive. However, there seems to be an extra level of software support needed for SSD drives. From what I have read there can be performance degradation over time and other issues. Does anyone know how well SSD drives are supported in Linux and also if there is support for the TRIM command or if it is planned?

Having recently installed Ubuntu 10.10, I'm currently looking around for different programs. However, it's already getting on my nerves that I have to type my password every time I want to install something. Where and how do I disable this? I already set myself as admin in the user settings but that doesn't seem to work.
This goes for things like changing system settings too, it's really annoying.

I have 10.04.1 on my server with a 250gb sata drive. I have all my files on this hard drive. I'm running out of space so I have another 250gb sata drive I need installed. I want to create raid 0 so I can expand my servers hard drive space. I don't want to lose my data on original hard drive or reinstall to create the raid. Is there a way to achieve this with mdadm without altering the first hard drives data?

Is there a way of altering the time between password requests. For example after I login there seems to be a certain amount of time before the screen blanks out and a new request for the user password is asked. I would like to increase the time substantially.

I've trying to get dnsmasq working as a combined dns and dhcp server. It's infuriating so far... In short, the DNS works fine for anything added to /etc/hosts, and the dhcp works fine, but the dhcp is not updating the dns with hostname information from clients.
The outcome of this is that i can only ping a node by hostname if i know it's address, which means setting a static dhcp allocation and putting the hostname into /etc/hosts manually, which is very annoying and kind of defeats the poit of dhcp. There must be a way to get dnsmasq to update the hosts file, surely The clients aren't using fqdn's if that matters, and i think i've tried every combinination of "expand-hosts" and "domain=" following is the dnsmasq config file contents:
domain-needed
bogus-priv
except-interface=tun0
[code]....

We are running SLES 11 where an iscsi tape library is attached. To load the tape in a slot we are using for
instance the command #mtx -f /dev/sg1 load 2 which is doing very well. But after a server's reboot the device name of the loader is now /dev/sg4 or /dev/sg5 I mean it is dynamic. Is there any way to have a fixed device name for all times?

I'm new here and hope to profit from your immense linux knowledge and of course to share my own experience where I can.
I'm in a student organization and we use a file server that runs linux. I can log in through ssh and copy using scp using login and password (no rsa/dsa keys because most users are windows users using winSCP and they're lacking in computer knowledge so we don't require them to mess around with keys)
However, I don't have network access everywhere, so I'd like to make a copy on my laptop harddisk of some of the folders I use most frequently. Note that I don't need it to copy files from my pc back to the remote server so I don't need two-way sync. Deleting the local copy every time and downloading a new full copy is not an option as we are talking about several gigabytes and the download speed is limited. Normally I would use Unison, however, this requires unison to be installed on both pc's and I can't install any software on the file server so this is not an option.
Any ideas on how to achieve this? I'm reasonable knowledgable about linux so I don't mind tinkering with some config files and using command line applications.

I'm looking for a solution which would allow me to move and resize windows (e.g. rdesktop or firefox, etc...) in X. Preferably independent of either GNOME or KDE. The purpose of this is to be able to perform demo, where certain windows would be placed on a laptop's external monitor, without the obvious mouse cursor movements and resizing.

I use putty to get to my RHEL 5.3 workstation from my Windows laptop.
Typically, if I want a new terminal on my windows 7 workstation from another terminal or mc, I have to type start and I will see a new terminal window running the default shell.
QUESTION : What is the equivalent command in RHEL 5.3 (and or solaris) to create a new terminal window from the command line ? I will be entering this command from the shell prompt or mc's command line.
In Windows, if I want to start another terminal and in that terminal, I want to run a program, I can do "start program.exe arg1 arg2". this will create a new terminal window and runs program.exe in that terminal window. I don't have to create a terminal and then in a separate step run the program. How can I do this in Linux ?

have been trying to figure out the .basrhc files and decided to change some of the permission of those files. The outcome is that, when i restarted the computer, i try to log in as a user but once i typed the name and login only a black screen can be seen, and can not do anything. I restart the computer and try to log in as a root, the same thing.
Next time I restarted the computer and press ctrl+spack+backspace, and for less than 2 seconds i am shown the console windows and then automaticaly comes back to the X windows. It seems that console is crashing too. I am using fedora core 8 and i ve got information that i would not like to loose.
