CentOS 5 :: Permissions Get Reset To Original State
Nov 4, 2009I have a Centos 5.3 desktop that I have a development board connected via a serial connection to. The permissions on /dev/ttyS0 are currently set
crw--w---- 1 root root 4, 64 Nov 4 13:56 ttyS0
I have changed them so that they read
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 4, 64 Nov 4 13:56 ttyS0
But every time I initialize the dev board the permissions switch back to the original state. I have found lots about preventing the permissions switching back upon reboot but that doesn't appear to be the problem.

I had just installed GNOME 3, however, I didn't really like it as much so I decided to go back using GNOME 2,but then a whole bunch of things happened. I tried re-installing GNOME 2,but then I lost the Ubuntu enviorment and stuck only with GNOME and now I'm only left with a terminal whenever I log in. how to restore Ubuntu 11.04 back to its original state, like as if it had a fresh installation?

Oct 23, 2009I tried to install KDevelop4, decided I didn't want to use it, and now I am having trouble getting KDevelop3 working again. The only steps to installing kdevelop4 were installing a new version of kdevplatform and then kdevelop itself. I did this:
1) sudo yum remove "kdevplatform* kdevelop*"
2) disable updates and testing repo
3) sudo yum install "kdevelop"
The problem is that there is something wrong with the menus (File, Edit, etc). There are many important items missing, as well as one of them says "No text!". This indicates that this is not the original packaged version with F11 because I used it for a year and it was certainly not like this. Is there a better way to get back to the original version than I showed here?
Software :: Restore To Original State After A 'make Install' ?
Feb 26, 2011I was in real doubt where to put this, so I hope I picked the right forum; otherwise, my apologies!
I want to build Roadsend PHP on my system. There seems to be no way to do this with the package manager, so I have to build it from source.
Turns out it depends on something called 'Bigloo'. Again no luck with the package manager, so I had to build this one from source too.
I took version 3.0c (Roadsend website recommends this version), did a

./configure && make && make install
, which did the job. Builing Roadsend worked, but I got a runtime error, which had to do with the Bigloo version.
No problem, I tought, then I'll just install Bigloo 3.1a. I did a "make uninstall" in the 3.0c dir, and tried to build 3.1a. This also worked, but now when I try to make Roadsend, I reports:

Release mismatch -- Heap is `3.0c', Bigloo is `3.1a'
So, somehow, there are still traces of 3.0c on my system. Maybe some file that didn't get deleted or some table entry that hasn't been undone?
My question is: How can I remove all traces of this version? Apparently, "make uninstall" is not thorough in this case.
And: Is there a general solution to remove everything when I did a "make install". So that my system is in the same state as it was before I ran the command?
Fedora Installation :: How To Restore Audio Files To Original State
Jan 27, 2009I installed F9 for a friend. She wasn't getting any sound. I ran aplay -l, but got no sound card listed. I ran lspci -v, but got no sound card listed. However,the output of lspci -v said the computer had a particular motherboard. I Googled for it and was told it had an onboard sound card. That led me to the package called realtek-linux-audiopack-4.06a, which I installed. It included an installation script, which I ran.
The script didn't work to compile various files it was supposed to, but it did work to delete various files from my friend's system. Here are the bits of the script that removed files:

In the result, the failure of the compilation didn't matter, because lspci -v lied. She didn't have the motherboard shown, but a different one without an onboard sound card. Of the files deleted by the script.
I was able to reinstall libasound.so.2 and libasound.so.2.0.0, but I haven't yet tried to reinstall the other ones deleted by the script. Now, I want her to buy a sound card, but I'm afraid it won't work unless all the deleted files are reinstalled. I'm looking for guidance as to how I can reinstall the files deleted by the bits of the script I set out above, without completely reinstalling Fedora.

Mar 29, 2011Somehow my restart/shutdown button is gone from the top right hand side of my main menu in Ubuntu. I've managed to get a shutdown button back on the menu by right-clicking it and selecting "Add to Panel..." but I really want the original button back in there. I'm not sure what caused it to disappear but I think it was the updates that ran yesterday. Is there anway to restore my main menu to its original, pristine state? If so, that would rule.

Mar 26, 2010I am working as system administrator for the past 5 years, but only on Windows XP systems, I recently moved to Linux, frankly speaking a few days ago, and i got many problems with it. may be as i am a beginner. My Problem started with Ubuntu 9.04 amd 64 and now with 10.04 beta.
The main problem I installed the wine (I am aware that wine is not compatible with all softwares of microsoft) and Installed microsoft office 2007 and it installed successfully but after installation when I launched Microsoft Excel it got hanged (only the Microsoft excel) and loading logo stood on top of all applications, then I decided to restart and pressed the restart button from menu on the right top. but there was no further response, then I pressed the reset button after waiting for 3-4 minutes to get rid of that logo of Microsoft in the center of my screen.
Now, when the Ubuntu was booting, Text arrives and disappears fast saying dev/file system has errors the logo of Ubuntu 10.04 and dots of loading at the bottom arrived and text written in the bottom of that "on of the drives needs to be checked, please wait it may take some time" Press 'C' to cancel disk check up. Now, its checking for a long time maybe for 30 minutes and the bottom text disappears and the loading Ubuntu 10.04 logo still remains and nothing happening after that.
I Pressed alt+crtl+del 2 times, it restarts saying that saving some alsa process, then again the same thing after restart. If I press C, it displays in the bottom of Ubuntu 10.04 logo "/File system has errors" and the loading screen remains like that. Now what is the solution and what are the precautions to be taken while using Ubuntu, as I was interested in introducing Ubuntu to marketing managers of offices, who wonder on the Internet all the time finding stuff and getting attacked by viruses. If this type of problems continue in Ubuntu, it will not be safer to use it, as if it wont boot during sudden power failures, that could result in a big problem.

When I select it the shell exits and displays the graphic "exploding" and then it just sits there. Shutdown works fine; just no reset. Any ideas? I've installed from the DVD. I booted the live CD and it resets just fine so I know it's no my hardware

Feb 16, 2011while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :

The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. And then used sbopkg to download and compile wine version 1.2.2, which went through just fine.
After that I grabbed cabextract from sbopkg and ran this: wget [url] sh winetricks d3dx9 To get the DX9.
But, when I try to run the game, this is the error I get:

The game it self ran perfectly on the 32 bit version of Slackware, tested with 13.0. So now I think I'm missing some libs or something, but I have no clue which.

I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.

Nov 19, 2010I am new to fedora and installed wine to see if I could get the sony reader software working (required to access sony bookstore from my sony ereader). Well the program did not work though it did create icons on my desktop. wine kept crashing and I said lets just get rid of it. I uninstalled wine via yum remove and nothing appeared to happen so I did rpm -qa |grep wine and saw lots of stuff. So I simply did yum remove wine* and then a rpm -qa |grep wine was empty. however wine is still under applications on my desktop and still has a category for programs--reader. I should also mention that while wine was installed I attempted to remove the reader via the wine uninstalller but a) wine gave a message of a core crash and b) all the uninstaller did was give me the option to reinstall the reader program. so now when I attempt to open an epub it tries with the sony reader software. I know I can just right click to use another program but for now I want wine gone completely from my pc and the sony program gone.

Feb 3, 2010Installed karmic fresh a couple weeks ago.
After doing the last update I can only reboot to the BusyBox (intramfs) prompt -pic is attached. Other posts suggest there are some missing modules but I haven't figured it out yet.
There are some files I'd like to save to my external hard drive not to mention my evolution emails, Firefox bookmarks, etc. in case I have to reinstall 9.10.
find these things when I'm booted up using the Live CD? They must be buried somewhere in the file system but haven't been able to find them.

May 19, 2010I think I may have accidentally screwed up my sources.list for Ubuntu 10.04 x64. Does anyone know where I can find the original?
For example, when I try to 'sudo aptitude install zsnes' the package is there (it let's me auto complete it), it gives me the following:

Apr 16, 2011ubuntu one takes like 30s to start all of the sudden (it used to be almost instantaneous on log in). This is an issue for two reasons: first is the fact that system performance is drastically compromised while ubuntuone-syncdaemon starts since it is accessing the disk as much as it absolutely can, which means that other programs also take forever to launch; second, when it finally does start, I am prompted to unlock the keyring, which interrupts whatever I am doing in a fairly annoying fashion and prevents the screen from locking properly if the computer is suspended.
While ubuntuone-syncdaemon is taking its merry time to launch, the status of the process is "uninterruptable," and an entire processing core is used at 100% with IOwait, as it is furiously accessing the hard drive.Is their any way I can get u1 back to original, unobtrusive self? Could this be indicative of a hard drive issue.

Jun 20, 2011I dual boot both Windows and Linux and I often put my computer to "sleep" at night so it's easy to wake up the next morning. In Windows I just need to press a few keys and my computer comes to life, in Linux this doesn't happen and I have to actually go for the power button. (This wouldn't be so bad if the computer wasn't in a hard to reach place in a cupboard) At the moment I have a USB hub which my keyboard and mouse plug into, but for the sake of testing I plugged a second USB keyboard directly into the machine itself, again neither wake it. Doing a bit of research I have discovered that the wakeup devices are stored in /proc/acpi/wakeup The contents of the file by "cat" are as follows:
