Some windows programs won't run after I have installed them with Wine. They either won't run or they make the screen go to a black painting screen (screen goes black and you can paint over it with your mouse to make the desktop reappear). I have tried changing the windows version and made no difference. I have even tried opening it in a virtual window and made no difference (Window opens then closes)

View 6 Replies View RelatedHave installed Wine - version 1.2.3-Oubuntu1-ppa2-maverick1(wine1.2) from the Ubuntu softwear center . Downloaded windows executable PAF5EnglishSetup.exe which is a Genealogy softwear program from a trusted source (familysearch.org) .
However , when i attempt to open with Wine Windows Program Loader i get the pop up window saying the file is not marked as executable then reference to "executable bit" . I then see the following:
"You should only mark a file as executable via the file permissions if you know what you are doing." I do not know what i am doing . Therefore , reluctant to go messing with something i am not familiar with but i really need this softwear installed .
I finally got around to installing Linux on my laptop the other day, and I'm trying to use Wine to run some windows apps. Problem is, my programs never appear. They DO start - I can see them in 'ps -e' as well as Gnome System Monitor. Yet the window never appears. It's not just one program either; first I tried running Steam from the terminal and I can tell that it successfully launches. The window just doesn't get drawn. All other windows become unfocused when it launches and I'm even able to type in my password to log in (I know this because after I hit enter the "Steam Login" entry disappears from the taskbar and the "Steam" entry appears in it's place) but no Steam related windows ever appear.
The second program I've been trying to emulate is EVE Online. Similar thing happens: The EVE splash screen DOES appear, along with it's entry in the taskbar, but when it closes, the EVE client never becomes visible - no taskbar entry this time either. Again, I can see it running in ps -e or System Monitor, and one of my CPUs cores becomes maxed out, so I know it's running. Also, I just noticed that I can right click Steam's invisible entry in the tray and bring up the context menu, but nothing more than that. I've heard of fonts being invisible/incorrect under Wine, but not the entire program! I've googled and tried running things in compatibility mode for various versions of windows, but have had no progress. What am I missing?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI don't know if it's just my system, but after applying the latest Wine update, the mouse cursor in Wine windows is now purple/magenta/pink, whatever. Not a big problem, just annoying. I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe only MS program I need on my computer is Word 2007 for the equation editor to write/edit files from work. So after installing Wine I installed MSOffice2007. Excel worked OK (although I don't need it - I am perfectly happy with the Libre Office spreadsheet). Word however froze each time so I tried to uninstall and reinstall it. However I always got an error message when trying to uninstall with Wine. So I followed the advice of some strands in this forum and deleted the Program Files folder from the ~.wine directory. However the menus are still in Wine/Programs/Microsoft Office even though they lead to nowhere. I tried to reinstall but still I nothing happened. I presume the old entries still lead to the position where previously the .exe files were located. Now my question is either how can I remove these menu entries and try installing again - or even better - is there a Linux programme that can read/edit the equations written in Word 2007?

I don't recall where the setting was configured but I can't find anything like it in 4.3. Is there somewhere I can set this option or is it no longer available?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI switched from 11.1 to 11.2 last month. I'm now having a smoother experience with openSUSE, with some exceptions.
One is Emacs.
A rather annoying "feature" that has appeared is the following: When editing a LaTeX file, compiling it (C-c C-c, using AucTeX macros) makes the Emacs window become shorter by one line. The same happens if I switch to some other buffer. It does not happen if I switch back to the LaTeX buffer. So, after just a few editing/compiling/checking errors sequences I find the original window half of its initial size...
A similar problem occurs when editing IDLWAVE scripts (it's a proprietary scientific data analysis language widely used in my field, but still has its Emacs macros), but only if I open an interactive IDL-shell to run the script.
So, I imagine it's not a problem related to AucTeX, although it might be related to the macros opening separate buffers/windows (e.g.: error messages) associated with the current buffer. Also, the problem does not go away if I remove my own .emacs customization files. Checking the Emacs bug lists, it seems that there are some bugs related to window resizing, although I have not been able to find exactly the same problem I am having. But, before reporting this one, I'd like to hear from fellow Emacs/openSUSE users. Just in case I'm messing things up somehow.

When I go to the kickoff menu and select the Cups Web Management, it just keeps openeing konqueror windows until I logout!

Anyway, 75 percent of my users are using Linux. I'm guessing with WINE because the program is Windows based. That's all fine and well with me, but I have a problem. The donations option, opens a browser and lets the user make a donation to my paypal account, and the callsign lookup option opens the browser to the qrz.com database for whatever callsign the user enters. WINE, doesn't seem to support opening browsers for my software, but I've seen it do it for other software. View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I turn on my computer I am greeted by an unending stream of "Starting File Managers" appearing in the programs list. This cannot be stopped, though none of the file managers actually open. They just sit there filling up my programs bar and wasting my cpu slowing down computer. It also means I cant upon my own folders, or see what programs I have open.If I run terminal, type xkill and click on one of the buttons in the programs list, that kills them all, and I can see my programs again for a bit, until it fills up again. The panel disappears and appears again, with all the spawning messages gone and any other programs I have open remain there. Its just the randomly spawned "Starting File Managers" that don't come back.
My CPU fluctuates. Its around 60% to 90% load, when it should be idle, but is instead opening all these windows.When I view the processes the most CPU intensive (when I sort) is Gnome System Monitor at 6% and then Gnome panel at 5%,gconfd-2 is as around 2%, compiz.real, dbus-deamon hover around 1%. And everything else is generally at 0%.So somewhere, a hidden process is using about 70% of my CPU load. Which isn't shown in system-monitor. Maybe because its an admin process and I can only see simple user processes. I dunno.There is something else though. I have a process with no name appearing, its blank. And it keeps disappearing and re-appearing. So you can hardly select it hard enough to kill it. I managed to kill it once and it said error, process (large number, 10,000 or 100,000) does not exist. So can't be killed.When I do an xkill the console writes:

I use Mathematica 7.0 through my school's SSH server. This involves:
-loading their font server via "xset fp+ tcp/c1.ucalgary.ca:7100"
-connecting to the SSH server via "ssh -X useruser@servername.ca"
-entering my password Then I choose to run Mathematica via ". use mathematica 7" then to load the GUI "mathematica".
Sometimes, and only sometimes, the screen goes to the error in the attached picture, stays there for about 5 seconds, brings me to the login screen. When I log in again, all of my applications that were running, open folders, and my terminal windows are closed.
im using fedora 12 on my laptop and im trying too play battlefield 2 demo from [URL]... the installation worked quite nicely but when i go to play the demo the aplikation comes up saying loading battlefield 2 demo.exe than it vanishes is there anything i need to install to get this program to work?

(Return to Castle Wolfenstein)I tried downloading some demos and it says BLOCKED: WINE START UNIX and to read the executable bit. I did, and it says it will NOT install any programs downloaded from the internet. I thought 'fine, I guess they have to be retail games' so I popped the disk in and it tells me the same thing. Any exe program I EVER try to install from anywhere is just BLOCKED: WINE START UNIX. Why is this happening?
