Ubuntu :: NTFS Configuration Utility Not Working In 11.04

I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 yesterday on my laptop. My laptop has three partitions. One for Win 7, one for Ubuntu, and another for data. The data partition is formatted NTFS and I'd like to have it mounted on startup. I had done this before using NTFS Configuration Utility and it worked great. Unfortunetly after installing Natty it seems to no longer work. Whenever I open the program from the app drawer it asks for my sudo p-word and then nothing happens. Nothing pops up... If i try to run it from terminal using
gksudo ntfs-config
The same thing happens but I do get the below text in term

Trying to format a external Hard drive in NTFS using the utility program.
The error message is

I would like to write a small configuration utility that will act as a daemon on the telnet port and SSH port that will only allow access to, and modification of, specific information in a structure imposed by the utility. How do I set this utility up so that when a user opens a telnet connection (or ssh) to the device, they are actually connected to the utility?

I cannot get the Disk Utility to launch, when I click the icon the cursor rotates and stops but nothing happens.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the Disk Utility, still not working.
I have three HDDs and many partitions. I multi boot Linux, Win 7 and Win XP.
All OS's boot cleanly using EasyBCD boot loader.
It did not work in 10.04 or 10.10.

Gnome-disk-utility doesn't show filesystem type, mount point, filesystem label, size¦ of my / filesystem.
I am running Debian Squeeze using lvm2. I have two HDDs and each has one primary partition, which are used as PVs. Having two VGs, each VG has it's own PV.
There are some LVs and all of them except the LV holding the swap space are formatted with XFS. Now gnome-disk-utility shows everything about my /home LV, another LV containing a whole Ubuntu installation,¦ only the / LV (and Swap LV, but I don't know what it is supposed to show there) is/are missing nearly all information.
Otherwise the system is running perfectly well and the Debian / LV is shown normally in Ubuntu's disk-utlity, as well as all other LVs.

DebianCopy is a copy of my Debian installation (different fs label and UUID). DebianII (again different UUID and label) is a copy too, but there I tried out newer (testing) versions of udisks/lvm2/udev and right after the upgrade it showd everything as it should with the additional advantage of the newer udisks-version showing my VGs, but after a reboot it showed the same behaviour as before or even worse, because the information about other LVs was missing too.
In the end I even modified the fstab. Originally it contained the /dev/mapper/vgbay... entries and I replaced them with LABEL=... and finally with UUID=..., but it didn't make any difference either.

My NHD/NAS stopped working. Hoping it was a problem with the network card I pulled the hard drive out of the NHD case and mounted it in an external case. Windows 7 won't mount it, neither will XP, neither will a Mac. The drive shows up in the device manager but won't mount. It sounds fine spinning. Quiet and no different than before. The NHD was a 250GB Iomega black series. The actual drive inside is a Western Digital. I've been planning on trying Ubuntu for a while on an older laptop that really slowed down with XP SP3. Loaded ubuntu up - all went very smoothly. I'm quickly becoming a huge fan of the OS. I plugged in the drive on my new Ubuntu system and it mounted! The drive shows up as 3 drives which I'm assuming are partitions. I can actually access the middle 66 MB drive. It contains what I suspect is the Linux operating system for the NHD.
If I try to access the other two I get a pop-up per:
For the 66 mb I can't access - "Error mounting" mount /dev/sdc2: can't read superblock"
For the 250 gb I can't access - "Error mounting" mount /dev/sdc4: can't read superblock"
I then tried to run the testdisk utility on the 250 gb drive both using "sudo testdisk /dev/sdc4" and just "sudo testdisk". I've also tried NONE and the INTEL partition. Based on my earlier post and playing around with options I think running it with "sudo testdisk" and INTEL might be the way to go. See the screen shots for the errors and sequence of events. I don't know what to do next - which seems to be something to do with testdisk thinking my drive is a heck of a lot bigger than it is. If testdisk can't fix it - I really need this drive recovered. I had a 2nd drive ready to back up this 250 GB NHD. Never did it. That is a mistake I'll only make once!

cpuid utility is not compiled with U9.04 and the utility is not available as a package with synaptic -
other distributions have it available as rpm . url

I just went out and bought stuff to build a new computer, and among the parts was a Gigabyte ga-890fxa-ud5 motherboard ([URL]). The board has 3 (well, 4, but we'll stick to the 3) main sata interfaces, with 2 slots per interface, allowing 6 sata drives. In slot_0 i put my blu-ray drive, in slot_1 i put my drive that will host the OS and its partitions, and that is in the sata connector pair on the left. The middle sata connector pair (slot_2 and slot_3) i have 2 2tb drives, and in the sata connector pair on the right (slot_4 and slot_5) i have 2 1.5tb drives.

So I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 from fresh. I do dual run with Windows and i like to share the folder with Win, so I need ntfs-config tool to automount the Win-Data partition. Installed ntfs-configuration tool and wont launch, tried through console and got:

I have partitioned my hard drive into three parts: 1 lean section for windows 7 (50 gb), another section for ubuntu 11.04 (50 gb) and one final massive section for 'storage' (360-ish gb). I have been following the following guide to accomplish this process:I am lost in the final stages of the process. The article says that:"Ubuntu won't "mount," or make available, your Windows 7 and Storage drives on boot-up, however, and we at least want constant access to the Storage drive. To fix that, head to Software Sources in the System->Administration menu. From there go to Applications, then the Ubuntu Software Center at the bottom. Under the "Ubuntu Software" and "Updates" sections, add a check to the un-checked sources, like Restricted, Multiverse, Proposed, and Backports. Hit "Close," and agree to Reload your software sources."
I completed this but I did not get the "reload your software sources" option. Then the article says:"Finally! Head to the Applications menu and pick the Ubuntu Software Center. In there, search for "ntfs-config," and double-click on the NTFS Configuration Tool that's the first result. Install it, then close the Software Center. If you've got the "Storage" or Windows 7 partitions mounted, head to any location in Places and then click the eject icon next to those drives in the left-hand sidebar. Now head to the System->Administration menu and pick the NTFS Configuration Tool."I was able to install NTFS Config. However, when I click on it and enter my administrative password, it does not launch.
I do not know how to get around this, I did some research online but was not able to find any solutions.I do not fully understand what ntfs config will accomplish, but I think it has something to do with accessibility to the storage partition from both windows 7 AND linux.The article says:"You'll see a few partitions listed, likely as /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, and the like. If you only want your storage drive, it should be listed as /dev/sda3 or something similar--just not the first or second options. Check the box for "Add," click in the "Mount point" column to give it a name (Storage, perhaps?), and hit "Apply." I've installed and reinstalled the Tool several times and it doesn't do anything. I get the prompt to input my password, which I know I put in correctly. It then just disappears. If I try running the tool again, I see a window pop up at the bottom of my screen for a half a second then disappear. I'm running Maverick with Win7 dual-booting and trying to use the tool to auto-mount several partitions

Got a problem mounting my Windows partition in Squeeze. It keeps refusing to mount it for me in Dolphin. I am a member of the disk and fuse groups, /dev/fuse is owned by root:fuse, and /sbin/mount.ntfs points to /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g, which in turn points to the ntfs-3g executable. I kind of need this ASAP. I am supposed to be finishing with this machine in 35min, and I am dead in the water without the ability to copy some files from the Squeeze ext4 partition over.

when I type 'fdisk -l' I get the following:

I have 2 hard drives both are 278.9GB in a mirror raid 1. Why does 2 partitions show up? Are they referring to each physical hard drive? I want to believe that this is the same partition and not two different physical hard drives since both are in the same 'start' and 'end' range. Is that correct?

I had a Linux server with Wheezy, I have 2 internal drive, one for linux OS, the other our Video On Demand drive that must be accessible to Windows and online. (That's why I chose NTFS, with our large video files, FAT will not work, and EXT isn't compatible with windows sharing, and I haven't gotten FTP to work right .
So I upgraded to Jessie today, and everything went smoothly until I tried to access my NTFS drive. (Named WowzaStorage)
I used FSTAB to auto-mount the drive (/dev/sdb1) to /media/ntfs/ on boot. All of this worked swimmingly on Wheezy, but since the update, something got mucked up and I cannot figure it out.
When accessing the mounted NTFS folder in /media/ (if it even shows up) gives me a 'Cannot be found' 'Input/Output error'
When in gParted to examine the drive, I can select it and view all the correct info, but I keep getting "error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sdb1/ --invalid argument"
Now first I thought maybe the NTFS driver was faulty and I removed 'ntfs-3g' and reinstalled it.
Now when I am in Terminal, after i umount and mount sdb1, I can CD to the drive but not the folders on it... Also using the File Browser, I get errors, and missing folders.
I get "Unhandled error message: Error when getting information for file '/media/ntfs': Input/output error"

I have successfully mounted my Win7 volume and my external hard drives NTFS volume as well. However, after modifying the fstab I seem to only be getting the win7 volume to auto-mount. Below is the contents of my fstab. /dev/sdf3 is not mounting. Again, it works no problem if I manually mount it.

I`m unable to mount my second hard drive I use to store my music and pics and wonder if it is to do with the error "failed to initialise HAL!" which I get every time I start Debian Lenny (AMD64 architecture). I have had this since doing an install (fresh) a few hours ago.
The drive is an ntfs one but when I click its icon in the computer section it says it cannot mount it and gparted says it cannot read the file system.If so how would I get the error box to stop appearing and how do I mount the ntfs drive?

I have a Western Digital 3TB USB drive connected to a Raspberry Pi 2 running Raspbian Jessie. I created an 30GB ext4 system partition and a NTFS Data partition using the remainder of the drive. I formatted the NTFS partition as follows:
sudo mkfs.ntfs -Q -L Data /dev/sda2
The drive works fine on the Pi but when I connect it to a Windows 7 pc the pc doesn't recognise the format of the Data partition and can't access it.
On the Pi I ran:
$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda2
Disk /dev/sda2: 2.7 TiB, 2968557453312 bytes, 724745472 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 4096 = 4096 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes

When I plug in my external USB Hard drive which is formatted as a single NTFS partition, it is recognized and mounted automatically, a nautilus window pops open. Unfortunately it is not writable. The reason is: the partition is mounted "ntfs" (which lacks write support) instead of "ntfs-3g". This is the output of mount after plugging in the drive:
$ mount | grep sdc1
/dev/sdc1 on /media/4EBC5FB82435B0EE type ntfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=devkit,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077)
I want this partition to be writable by just plugging it in.
The partition should not have any errors because a) I fsck'ed it windows and b) mounting it manually works:
$ sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdc1 /media/disk_/
$ mount | grep sdc1
/dev/sdc1 on /media/disk_ type fuseblk (rw,allow_other,blksize=4096)
$ devkit-disks --mount-fstype ntfs-3g --mount /dev/sdc1

I have an external drive which is parted into two partitions:
1) ext4, with filesystem ext4 which I use for backup
2) NTFS with filesystem NTFS
Since I re-installed jaunty the NTFS partition is owned by root. Whatever I do to make it change, it doesn't work. I used:
sudo chown jan:jan NTFS
sudo chown -R jan:jan NTFS
Still it says the owner is root and also the group is root. What else do I need to do to make me owner of this partition? The fileproperties say: drwxrwxrwx Still the partition is read only for me. In ntfs-config it says: "Enable write support for external drive"

This problem started after I moved from ubuntu 9.10 (64bit) dual core to 10.04 (64bit) quad core machine. On both machines, I have svn working directories in an NTFS partition since I dual boot between Vista and Ubuntu - which gives me the opportunity to work on my projects whether I am on vista or ubuntu. My fstab entry is very simple:
UUID=62B81CE6B81CBA8D /media/ntfsdata ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
I use either RapidSVN or RabbitVCS. Whenever I commit those folders to the SVN server(google code), the folders seem to get corrupted. After which a rebuild or a refresh on Eclipse would provoke a 100% use on one of my 4 cpus. It would just hang there and the ntfs partition would not be accessible at all until I killed ntfs-3g process.
Then I would have to boot on vista to repair that partition. The gparted repair utility is USELESS because it cannot spot any partition errors caused by the svn commit. The dual cpu machine had occasional similar trouble but I never needed to repair it. SVN would not kill the ntfs-3g, but eclipse rebuild project after an svn operation would. I could prevent ntfs-3g hangup by checking off build automatically after a svn operation and close all projects and reopen one at a time to refresh.
A refresh would trigger a rebuild. On the phenomenally faster quadcore machine, the speed of operations could be too quick for ntfs-3g to handle (may be??). It looks like ntfs-3g is unable to handle high number of files at high speed operations. I use the same ntfs partition to store high volume bulk copy and bulk downloads with no problems - apparently, it is not the problem with high volume of transfer but the high number of files being thrashed back and forth at high speed by eclipse and svn commit. Does anyone else store their svn working directories on ntfs when developing with Eclipse on ubuntu 10.04?
Further addition: I need to mention that partition is compressed under ntfs. Perhaps, ntfs-3g is not capable of handling compressed ntfs. I uncompressed them - and during uncompress operation, explorer hung at the folder where I had done the svn commit. I rebooted vista and made a fresh uncompressed copy of those svn working folders and deleted the old copy. I'll wait and see what happens on my next commit using rabbitcvs.

I installed Fedora 13. I edited my fstab to automount my NTFS-3g drive. It worked. Then I updated to Kernel 2.6.34.6-54.fc13.x86_64 It doesn't work any more.

I have had my computer set to dual boot Windows 7 for months now with no issue. Now today when I logged on to Slackware (13.1 x86_64) it suddenly stopped recognizing that my Windows 7 drive has anything on it. Fdisk cannot see any partitions anymore. Yet I can reboot the computer and run Windows 7 off it just fine. The windows drive should be /dev/sdb with sdb1 being its system reserved partition and sdb2 being the actual Windows partition.
Dmesg sees that it is there like my other drives, but it appears that the Windows 7 partition is not unaccessable to anything in Linux.
How could this work yesterday yet today it doesn't? I didn't change anything.

Reproducible with Firefox 3.6.6 (installed from Ubuntu 10.04 repository), on Dell D620, Ubuntu 10.04 Steps to reproduce:
1) start Firefox from command line "firefox -P"
2) create new Firefox profile on NTFS volume (mounted with NTFS-3g)
3) add NoScript extension (through extension manager Get Add-ons), restart Firefox as suggested
4) extension is not added to Firefox In case at step 2) profile is created on Linux volume, at 4) extension is added to firefox.I'm not 100% sure, but I think this bug is related to Firefox 3.6 update (no problems with Firefox 3.5). I did not make proper investigation, but I have feeling same problem applies to Thunderbird 3.1.This issue does not allow to share Firefox/Thunderbird profile on dual boot machine (Ubuntu/WindowsXP).

I am doing major deployment of opensuse 313 pcs from windows to opensuse. I am having a problem that I have to keep 2 ntfs partitions intact will deleting the partition that has windows. Now everything goes well, opensuse installs but the problem is that I cannot give user full rights to ntfs folders. I have used graphical file permission methods n terminal chown n chmod methos but still permissions revert back to root.

I am trying to restore an NTFS partition from a backup and I need the new drive to have the old (dead) drive's UUID (which I recorded).I really really really cannot use the option of changing fstab to mount using a new UUID, for this case I need the old UUID that existed on the other drive.Is there some ntfs equivalent of tune2fs that'll let me change the UUID on an ntfs partition?

Just installed 11.3 on my computer, however when I connect an external NTFS harddisk I receive an error message. When I open dolphin to connect to an internal NTFS partition I receive the message:
