Sometimes, when I leave my Ubuntu's X Server on, I'll come back after several minutes and see that my machine is powered off. Sometimes this happens, sometimes it doesn't, but I don't think it's because of hardware failure rather than my lack of measurement.
It used to power off in terminal mode (CTRL+ALT+F1) but then I added this to ~/.bashrc and it went away:

Since it's not a CRITICAL message, but an INFO, it seems like its a planned shutdown.
Does anyone know how I can turn this feature off?
I've recently done a fresh install of 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 5720 and it went pretty well. However I've a problem with the logon appearing twice. If I leave my computer idle for too long the screen locks. when I return I'm asked for my password which unlocks the computer but within a few seconds the screen locks again and I need to enter my password for a second time. This time the computer unlocks and stay unlocks.. but it's annoying I have to unlock it twice !
How can I extend the length of time before it unlocks or disable it all together.. until the problem gets fixed?
Here's the situation:
I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.
i have fedora 8 on my machine...i want to uninstall it..i restarted my machine with windows CD on it....but shortly after pressing key to continue configuring the installation, screen goes blank and computer becomes idle....i tried using about 10-15 different CDs of windows OS but failed every time...what could be the reason and how can i fix this......NOTE: but if i try to reinstall fedora the problem dosen't occur.
View 12 Replies View RelatedWhen I run top d 0.5 on my machine and I press 1 to enable the SMP View, I notice that all of the CPUs keep toggling between 100%idle and 0% idle.
The odd part is that when a CPU goes to 0.0% idle, I would expect to see one or more of the other columns peek, but they are not.
What is causing this?

Have tried to install 10.04 from a cd sent to me by ubuntu. lts on an x-windows medion pc mt7 (med mt 345). Previously comp. was running windows xp pro. After pressing restart at end of install process I get nothing! Black screen, no mouse control , no keyboard control, nothing at all.
Have tried putting cd in again but get nothing, on pressing restart the cd was politely ejected. Have tried rebooting a few times but get no response. Everything is switched on. So now I cannot even get a terminal up, the only thing I am fairly certain about is that the computer is sending a signal to the screen as there is Not a "no signal" message.

My problem is while using ubuntu.. i experience sudden black screen and when the black screen appears it appears for forever until i restart the my computer, it happens suddenly and many times and im having this problem in ubuntu only never experienced in windows.. as i kicked of windows and using ubuntu so i am having this problem regularly. I have an 80GB HDD where I installed Windows XP first and then Ubuntu. The thing is that whenever I shut down my computer and then turn it back on (wether it's right away or a few hours later, or the next day), I get the GRUB screen where you have to choose Ubuntu, but after that just a completely black screen. I then have to force a shutdown, then turn it back on, and it works. Whenever I restart it works too, this seems to happen only after a shutdown.

I can't get Ubuntu to reinstall on my computer... I recently reformatted and re-installed windows and I think that might be the problem because I was running Ubuntu 64-bit before I reformatted... Now the problem I am getting is when I go to boot up Ubuntu to finish the install it loads on the purple screen with the Ubuntu logo then goes into a black screen with white letters. Its the screen that tells you to reboot and go into windows a run 'chkdsk /r' and reboot again, the problem is I have followed those directions 3 times and it didn't work, I don't think the operating system really knows what the problem is.

I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.
1. How can I stream music from my ubuntu computer (9.10) to my windows computer using vlc?
2. What nvidia driver should I use? The one found in "hardware drivers" is 185 but nvidia's site has 190! which one should I use?

My computer screen will sometimes just 'turn black' and become unresponsive, and I have to shut it down and restart. (The longest I waited was a few minutes with no response. How do I get customized mouse pointers? When I download something and 'extract' it, how do I know which file I'm supposed to open after I click 'show the files'? I've downloaded a few things and extracted them but I'm assuming I must do more, since they are not on my applications. Which is the best browser to use on Fedora? View 4 Replies View RelatedThis started happening about 1 hour ago. My computer display just went black, and the power light never changed state. I turned off it's power, and then back on (after a few seconds), and the power light came on "blue", which is what it's supposed to be, but i got nothing on the display, and hitting the menu buttons did not show a menu for the display, or any kind of response. i rebooted a couple of times, to no avail.
I thought my new display just crapped out, so i took it to another computer (windows xp laptop) and plugged in the vga cable (my server uses DVI), and it was fine. I took it to another computer (windows 7) with a DVI cable, and it was fine. I brought it back to my desktop/server, and plugged it back in, and it was fine again. Menu buttons and all.
Then, a few minutes later, it went out again. I turned the power for it off for a few minutes, then back on, and it came on with weird scanlines of various colors... then went back to black.
I played with unplugging the dvi cable in the back of the monitor/display, and wiggling it, and then at the computer connection, and at some point it came back on, for no obvious reason (i think i already stopped playing with it).
xorg.log was uneventful, but i can post it, if need be.
Dmesg shows this (the very last line of the NEXT post was the only one of any interest; but googling it returned no scenarious involving display crashes):

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and now if I leave my computer inactive for 5 minutes it goes black and then I have to enter my password. This is really annoying when I am streaming videos or watching movies. I have gone through all the admin and preferences and can't find how to turn this off or even how to change the time for going into stand-by. I would expect it to be in the power management but it isn't there.

This year i bought a new Sony Vaio VPCS12M9E preinstalled with windows 7 pro, but i liked the idea of having the opportunity of chosing between windows and ubuntu, so i downloaded ubuntu 10.10 and burned the ISO-image to a disc, and restarted my laptop just as i did when i installed it on my old laptop. The problem is that when i boot the disc after restarting the computer, the screen just turns black. What can i do to install Ubuntu?

before i had ubuntu 10.04 which could only run in x's safe graphics mode - allowing for full screen resolution but with handicapped graphics - for example videos fullscreen would be quirky and run with cpu at 100%, something which was no problem before 10.04.
then i tried ubuntu 10.10 and later lubuntu 10.10 (which had exactly the same problem); the monitor is running 1440x900 while the computer is rendering to only 1024x768 - leaving a huge black border on right and bottom of screen. the gfx is still crippled; videos fullscreen is quirky as before.
I recently installed Debian squeeze on one of my older pcs. I have had this computer for a long time with windows so I know there is no hardware issue. About half an hour after being turned on in Debian the computer goes to a black screen and the num lock caps lock and scroll lock keys flash.

The first I'm trying to boot is a 64bit version of windows (have XP and 7 disc, trying XP for now) as I need to convert some of my work's ancient programs that still use DOS functions.
I choose Virtualbox over VMware just for the sake of VB being in the repos. Install and initial config went fine, but when I try to start (run) the VM the screen goes black, then the computer completely stops responding and needs a hard reboot. Pasting what I believe to be the error part in the log. If you need the entire log I can email or host it - too big for a post. Kernel Version - 2.6.32-trunk-amd64. Debian Sid

i've gotten my fedora 12 to the point where i can run python3 scripts from command line and can call up python 2.6.2 idle with the command 'idle' from command line. what command will call up python3 (3.1.2 to be exact) idle?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had switched over from Windows to Ubuntu and got rid of windows completely but still had the recovery partition and deleted it. I then tried to add that space to another partition, "Media." For whatever reason it deleted the "Media" partition so I used TestDisk to restore it. I did something wrong and when I rebooted my computer it would not boot so I used my LiveCD to check whats wrong and it had deleted all of my partitions and Ubuntu was nowhere to be found. So I used TestDisk again to recover them, this time it was successful. when I start my computer it does not boot into Ubuntu it just shows a black screen with the white underscore ("_") flashing in the corner. I'm not sure but I don't think it is booting into the correct partition, I think it would be trying to boot the first partition, /dev/sda1, rather than /dev/sda3. If this is the problem how could I fix it? I got all the boot loader information, here it is:

I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 in my old desktop, i.e. Compaq Evo D510 e-pc:
Intel Pentium 4 1.7Ghz
1GB 400Mhz RAM
80GB HDD
Intel 845G chipset board
Onboard 4X AGP Intel Video chipset
Onboard audio
The above is my setup and Ubuntu runs perfectly fine when it is being cold booted, i.e. I shut it down during the night and boot it in the morning, it boots perfectly fine. But while using, it suddenly freezes and I'm only able to move my mouse pointer and nothing else works on the screen. I tried doing the Ctrl+Alt+(F1/F2/...) but nothing works.
So when I restart it using the power switch, it goes into the black screen and nothing loads up. I'm stuck over here. And if I turn it off for around 30mins by removing the power plug, and then reboot it again, Ubuntu loads without any problem and runs for sometime, then again the same freezing problem happens and I have to wait for another 30mins to boot it up again.
I have a 28" monitor connected to it and it runs at 1920 x 1200 (16:10) resolution at 60Hz.
Simple question: how do I get Guayadeque to look black and pretty like this screenshot?URL...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite about a month ago. It worked for about three hours. I installed Wine, and it still worked but the display would sometimes go black for a few seconds. Later that day I rebooted and that was it, no more Ubuntu. It goes through all of the process of booting but then the screen just goes black before I even get to the purple Ubuntu screen. I'm running this on a drive in an enclosure so I simply plugged the drive into another machine ( actually two other machines ), and it works perfectly. I have an old Vista drive that I put in the Toshiba and that works just fine, so it's not a pure hardware issue. Just to be sure I wiped the Ubuntu drive and re-installed, this time without installing wine. No Toshiba love. Just the black screen. I even made a flash drive with the loader and iso from the Ubuntu site. Same deal. It starts to boot from the flash and then just goes black where you would normally expect the purple Ubuntu screen. This thing is driving me nuts and I am at a point where I really need this machine working and will be faced with simply wiping the Ubuntu drive and installing Windows.
