using any software(totem/vlc/mplayer/heck, i'd download a new one if it had this capability) make subtitles appear in the bottom black bar that exist due to video being 16:9 on my 4:3 monitor and not on top of the film leaving all of that black bar real-estate wasted?
View 2 Repliesi've got a mythbuntu 10.10 box connected to my tv; sometimes i want to use it to watch internet tv. owever, when i try to resize videos to full-screen, sometimes black bars intermittently flash across the entire screen. this does not happen when the video is in a window or on the web page, only when going into full-screen mode. unfortunately, on some of these sites, even the "large" in-page video selection is still too small to be comfortably watched from the couch.
i'd suspect it's something with flash, but a similar thing happens when i'm using skype inside a windows xp on vmware. black bars flashing across when in "full-screen" but just fine when zoomed up inside a window. and i don't think vmware video output is flash-based. so it may be something else entirely.
also, this doesn't happen on all internet video - i've only had it happen on video from nbc.com and nfl.com (i haven't really had the opportunity or reason to try many other sites yet), and it was only a little noticeable from the nfl.com but nearly unwatchable from nbc. yet if i go to videos, i have no trouble getting any of their videos running full-screen.
i have an integrated geforce 8200 graphics, and i'm running the nvidia proprietary drivers version 256. i'm not running 260 since its vdpau capability is questionable, and i need that for mythtv. i have a 64-bit system.
does anyone have any ideas regarding this? the fact that i'm getting consistently good results from videos yet consistently bad ones from the tv networks makes me wonder if it's something i'm even going to be able to fix.
Spice server/client configuration. I used remote viewer on debian jessie to connect to a guest virtual machine on kvm and everything works fine. It used a spice server / client and qxl. After I upgraded to debian stretch, I suddenly face issues with black bars in the remote client window. Those black bars appear only on the left and right side of the remote viewer window. Also in full screen mode the black bars sadly appear. Maybe the scaling mode is somehow disabled or my screen resolution of the host was wrong calculated related to that i can change the guest screen resolution but the spice remote client keeps its window size with the black bars. I was trying the last couple of days to resolve this issue, unfortunately without success.

I use 12800*800. It was standard and it is the only one that works.
I am using a emachine w2925 desktop and I installed the newest ubuntu. And it randomly goes to a black screen with white bars vertically half way down the screen that flash between bars and a black screen every few seconds.

I installed a video driver and after restarting I got as far as the login screen where I saw that the driver did not work: screen is mostly black with random bars of color. I was only able to restart in recovery mode mode. I tried the fix graphics option, which did not work and also some commands that I've seen posted in other threads. So far, still cannot delete the problematic driver or boot up normally successfully.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer keeps having some kind of meltdown. i really cant explain it other than the screen will go black, and then it will start flashing like white bars, or different colored bars. this happens at such random times i cant exactly pinpoint what sets it off.
the only thing i may have a clue to is that in my update manager, there is one thing that is a distribution update that i cant check to have it installed or anything like that. its then "Gij" and its description is it is "the gnu java bytecode interpreter" i just dont know if i should just go back to an earlier form of ubuntu because these problems didnt start happening until i upgraded to the new ubuntu
I prefer ubuntu (which I have been meaning to install for a while) but my netbook currently has linpus lite on it. (It's an acer aspire one). One night I left the netbook sitting open (forgot to close it), and when I went to use it the next day, when I started it up, the desktop did not show the normal icons in the background. It still showed the bar at the bottom with the connection icon, power icon, etc. as well as the "Internet" search bar in the top right corner.
But instead of the usual linpus desktop icons, there are just black and white horizontal bars, with some coloured dots in the black bars. I can still use the terminal to open firefox, and presumably other programs. It still connects to wifi signals, and the bottom bar looks normal and functional. I am posting this message right now with my netbook, and it doesn't seem to have lost any functionality. I would much rather just click on things most of the time instead of opening terminal for everything.
I get past the count down. The bars run across the top. Then my lcd monitor announces it has no signal and goes to sleep. Had this problem with earlier versions of Ubuntu, particularly 8.04. Was fixed in 8.10.

i recently got my hands on a movie and it came with the subtitles file, but it's in .sup format, which by the looks of it, is not supported in mplayer or vlc. i've looked online, and this seems to be the only format the subtitles come in. is there any successful conversion program to where i can convert them to .ssa?

Now, I've found the tutorial that says how to use the right filter with avidemux, but I was wondering what the easiest way is to create the file for that filter to read. Is it just a matter of manually writing it up in my fav text editor? something that looks like
startTime,duration,text
(one per line) then I'd rather just textedit it manually, but if it's something complicated, then I should use some software to do it...

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded to Lucid. While trying to watch movies (i have installed all the requisite plugins), I encountered certain problems. The following is what I noticed after some thorough search into the issue:
1. Suppose one goes to the location of a video file, say, /Home/Videos/Sound of Music.xyz , double clicking the file would open the movie player (Totem) but one would not be able to see any video, though sound is coming.
2. Sometimes, on entering the fullscreen the video started from double clicking the file is visible, but leaving full screen, it is lost again. This however doesnt happen in all cases, because mostly one sees no video if through double-clicking the file.
3. The same operation of playing, if done through the player (by /Movie/Open.. or by Adding a video file in the playlist) happens quite properly.
4. A .mkv file doesnt play for long, since the player crashes.
5. Subtitles are not detected, even after putting the settings on automatic loading of subtitles (/Edit/Preferences/Automatically.....)
I have recently been tasked to extract the subtitles from a lot of mkv files. Hundreds of them, maybe even more than a thousand. To do this, I modified a script I found online:

So in the above example the subtitle is actually in track number one and my script would be borked for that particular file. Is there a way to integrate mkvinfo into the script and parse it to see what track should be extracted? Like, read it line-by-line and change the value of some #TRACKNO variable everytime a string like "| + Track number:" appears, and stop when a string like "| + Track type: subtitles" appears? Maybe even skip doing anything if there aren't any subtitles.
PS: I actually prefer SRT subtitles to ***. If there was some command line tool I could use to convert the resulting *** file to SRT I would be much obliged.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI use divxenc 1.4.6 to create AVI files. Works great. Recently, I started using the option to subsequently convert that to MKV, so I can include multiple subtitles inside the file. Unfortuately, the subtitles show up much to high in the picture. In the AVI format, the subs are just above the bottom of the image. But in the MKV here they appear at about 1/3 up from the bottom. This behaviour shows in both Mplayer for Linux and VLC for Windows. So I guess it's in the file. Is there an updated version of divxenc, or another tool to generate MKV's directly ?

How can I go about getting the subtitles to be included in the file dump.vob? I've tried something like: mplayer dvd://1 -v -sid 5 -dumpstream -dumpfile dump.vob (where -sid 5 was the correct subtitle) but this does not work. I'm going to use mencoder to make an .avi file (with subtiutles, obviously), so I could, as a last resort, use some other program that extracts the subtitles (suggestions?).

(I want to watch an avi-file with a separate subtitle-file in srt format). With openSuse 11.0, KDE 3.5.8. and an older version of Kaffeine, there was a possibility to select subtitle files (srt).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using openSUSE 11.3 for my laptop and Kaffeine built in as my player. But when I tried to play any files with external subtitles, there is nothing happened. The drop-down list of subtitles is just gray and cannot be used.
So I have two questions:
(1) Can Kaffeine built in openSUSE 11.3 load subtitles automatically?
(2) If it cannot, how to load subtitles manually?
I have problem with VLC player. The problem, from the image below, appears whenever I open video file. I click Ok, and a everything is ok, until I jump to another time sequence, when sound and subtitles disappear.

Im using a Vizio 22" 1080p LCD HDTV has a monitor for my Ubuntu server over HDMI. It works great, except I cannot see the top or bottom bar at any resolution. Id really like to get it working at 1920x1080. Ive been tinkering with the xorg.conf a bit to no avail.
