Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Out Put "ghosting" Onto Other Desktops When Switch?

Jul 22, 2011

I'm having an issue with video out put "ghosting" onto other desktops when I switch. Or if there is some video playing, it's on top, and nothing else, like menus or file browsers will be displayed over it. For example, watching something in VLC, the menus flick out, it will still select it if I can figure out where it would be, and it flashes whenever a new menu item is selected. This also happens with open shot, and a couple of other programs, like Frets on Fire. I know the flash player is kinda buggy for firefox/chrome but is there another reason for this?

I have a Toshiba A665 laptop, with Ubuntu Studio 11.4. now I'm noticing that it's starting to do it with programs that don't have video- popup menus are starting to flake.

Ubuntu :: Removed Video Card To Switch To Onboard Video / Cannot Start Kdm

Jun 19, 2011

Got a bit of a problem where xorg can't start kdm. I pulled out a dying AGP card to try and switch to onboard video, and I think the previous configuration is gumming up the works.I've been running this system for quite a while, as you'll be able to tell from the version numbers.Would like to avoid having to transport my Amarok databases to a new server. I make heavy use of the song ratings and whenever I try to transport the database from the old system to a fresh build I have to spend hours relearning sql commands.Any ideas how to either fix the resolutions on the ATI or (preferably) get KDE to start on the onboard graphics?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mouse Over With Multiple Desktops?

Aug 14, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.04, my video card is an ATI Radeon HD3200. When I hook up my tv to my laptop via an HDMI cable, I am having an issue in the multiple desktop configuration. The audio and video work great in both the cloned desktop mode, and the multiple desktop mode (the extended displays cuts my laptop image in half though). However, when I am using multi-desktop, if I mouse over (or drag a window) from display one to display two, I can not bring my mouse back into the first display (it doesn't matter which display is which, tv or laptop)

Ubuntu Installation :: Ghosting A Machine / Is This Possible?

May 13, 2010

I have a laptop running dual boot which I would now like to convert to single boot (Ubuntu only).

I have recently had some very good experiences with VirtualBox (It's fantastic!) and so the idea that I have is to 'migrate' my whole Windows environment from 'dual boot' to VirtualBox.

I know that this can be done with such products as 'Ghost' where you take a snapshot of a whole (Windows) system and then you can recreate this (from DVD).

Here I'd really like to know whether Ubuntu (live CD) offers a similar tool so that I could copy my whole Windows setup, save it to DVD and then simply 're-install' it on a new VirtualBox machine.

That would save me absolutely masses of configuration work!

Ubuntu :: Grub Error After Ghosting

Jun 5, 2010

I made a multi boot USB using Grub 2 and Grub4DOS (with some help of liveusb.info) which works perfectly fine cuz I tested it my self.

Now I want to GHOST an image of this multi boot so when ever I want to ghost it on another thumb drive, I can easily do it. But when ever I make the ghost image and I try to put it on another thumb drive and try to boot from the newly ghosted thumb drive to test it, it will give the error below:

loading.
error: the symbol `grub_puts_` not found
grub rescue>

I tried SO MANY different techniques to find what the problem is. I tried making the multi boot using Ubuntu 9.04, 9.10 and 10.04 (which I think doesn't have anything to do with this but doesn't hurt to try!). I tried reghosting on the same brand and same size thumb drive and lots of other tries but I can't figure this out.

what do you use to make an image of your bootable thumb drive?

Debian Multimedia :: Desktops Forgetting Backgrounds?

Feb 28, 2011

Alright, my boss has discovered an odd issue with KDE4.4 on his laptop. He downloaded a Superman wallpaper for desktop 3 (he has four desktops) using the "Get new wallpapers" functionality, and he downloaded one to his Pictures directory inside his home directory and set it as the background for desktop 1. Now if he logs off and back on, everything is fine, but if he reboots both wallpapers are lost. If he goes into the desktop settings, the wallpapers are there and selected, but they won't show up unless he clicks OK again

Debian Multimedia :: Secure Desktops And Upgrades ?

Jun 14, 2011

I've been deploying a lot of Debian based OSs for the desktops. I recommend the users to upgrade after every 2 months; however as we all know upgrades have their own flaws and issues, many times an upgrade does cause a lot of problems.

I'm deploying the testing branch of Debian, reason being hardware compatibility issues with older kernel and drivers. My main concern is security, I don't want the users to have big security venerabilities over time which's a consequence of not upgrading, but upgrading too may break the system (partially maybe...).

I know there's an option to only do security upgrades, but this will require a repository refresh... the consequence of not upgrading after a repository update is that if you install software using software center.. or even using aptitude or apt, it's bound to give a lot of dependency issues which users wont like.

This's the second question -- installing new packages with an updated repository and an older system gives issues.

How can I accomplish for my video to remain full screen even if i switch desktops?

Fedora :: 13 X86_64 Nouveau KVM Switch - Video Res Drops Back To 1024x768 Instead Of 1200x1024

Jul 8, 2010

I have a server with Fedora 13 x86_64 installed that uses gnome as the desktop. Recently I purchased a generic KVM switch for my office. When I connect this to the server the video res drops back to 1024x768 instead of 1200x1024. I did some research and apparently Fedora 13 no longer uses the Xorg.conf file for display setup, it detects the hardware in the fly when you boot and uses the appropriate drivers (unless one exists in the /etc/X11 folder).

The specs for the KVM say that it can do way more than 1200x1024 so I can't see a problem with that. Also I tested it with a windows installation and I was able to obtain 1200x1024 resolution. The video card is a NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS and the current driver being loaded is the nouveau according to lspci. When connected to the KVM the display widget in gnome wont detect the monitor or graphics card anymore. I used system-config-display to change the display settings and it created this Xorg.conf file -

Ubuntu Multimedia :: HD Video Playback - Video And Sound Frequently Get Out Of Sync

Oct 17, 2010

When I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).

I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.

Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?
