Feb 4, 2010i wanted to add two more virtual screens if it is possible so i would have four? What are the disadvantages for that? why doesn't it already come with four?

Apr 25, 2016I recently installed Debian 8 (Jessie) with the default desktop environment (Gnome), and I use a dual monitor setup. Everything works absolutely fine beyond the fact that when I switch between desktops in the dash (Activities menu?), only the windows on my primary monitor switch, and the ones on my secondary stay the same.

Oct 22, 2010I first tried latest version 10.10 desktop. very slow booting in a Centrino CPU laptop not booting at all in a N455 CPU netbook. Tried version 10.04 which seems to work better fast booting in Centrino CPU laptop. fast booting in N455 CPU netbook. From Centrino Laptop with Windows XP on HD, once loaded Ubuntu as persistent live program from a USB drive, tried to install the program on SD memory card in PC slot. Upon request, installation made onto that memory only, not on inside HD, hence formatting only that memory. Upon completion, after removing the external memories and booting again the PC it does not boot of its own any more. XP OS damaged. I have recovered the system with a Toshiba backup CD but the HD has been formatted and all data lost. How can this happen ? I'll never try anymore to permanently install Ubuntu. I'll use it as persistent live on an external memory. I only have an old PC laptop with 128 MB RAM for further installation testing but no Ubuntu release can boot there. By the way, Lubuntu 10.10 look more fast and safe although appears to have more limitations then Ubuntu 10.10.

Jan 3, 2010I use 4 virtual desktops and under Fedora 8 and KDE was able for each to have a unique wallpaper. Since installing Fedora 12 and KDE I can't seem to find a way to get that feature. I can name each virtual desktop but not set individual wallpaper. I've searched the documents for both KDE and Fedora, they say how to set the wallpaper but not for individual desktops.

Jun 12, 2010I now have 2 desktops running debian. I have virtual servers running in desktop 1, and I am hosting my photos using Gallery2. I have copied Gallery2 and the mysql over to desktop 2. I have entered port forward to desktop 1 using port 80 (using my router), and desktop 2 using port 1000. I can only access Gallery2 in desktop1. If I tried to access Gallery2 in desktop 2, I got re-directed to desktop1.
Questions:
1. Are home routers capable of port forward to more than one computers in a home network behind the firewall of the router? It is Belkin N+ router.
2. Can multiple virtual servers be setup in 2 desktops?
Debian Configuration :: Separate Virtual Desktops On Dual Monitors?
Jul 19, 2011I have a ThinkPad W520 with nVidia Quadro 1000M and Nouveau drivers. I use external monitor with extended desktop using XRandR. My beef with this setup is that I get just one virtual desktop of a (1440+1920)x1080 size whereas what I would like to have is being able to have one separate (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my 1440x1080 external monitor with, for example, some reference material open, while have other programs working on another (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my main 1920x1080 screen. I've read that this might be possible with so called zaphod mode, but it looks like it involves static rules in xorg.conf which I would like to avoid since from time to time I need to carry my laptop with me without external monitor.

In Mint I can find no way to put multiple virtual desktops in my panel. In Ubuntu 10.10, when I go to synaptic package manager the settings tab with the repositories is dimmed out. I have enabled the sources list in administration but it is a less convenient way to add repositories. Despite what the linux community seems to think, I find that Simply Mepis and Pclinuxos are better for actual use.

Aug 14, 2010I am running Ubuntu 10.04, my video card is an ATI Radeon HD3200. When I hook up my tv to my laptop via an HDMI cable, I am having an issue in the multiple desktop configuration. The audio and video work great in both the cloned desktop mode, and the multiple desktop mode (the extended displays cuts my laptop image in half though). However, when I am using multi-desktop, if I mouse over (or drag a window) from display one to display two, I can not bring my mouse back into the first display (it doesn't matter which display is which, tv or laptop)

Feb 28, 2011Alright, my boss has discovered an odd issue with KDE4.4 on his laptop. He downloaded a Superman wallpaper for desktop 3 (he has four desktops) using the "Get new wallpapers" functionality, and he downloaded one to his Pictures directory inside his home directory and set it as the background for desktop 1. Now if he logs off and back on, everything is fine, but if he reboots both wallpapers are lost. If he goes into the desktop settings, the wallpapers are there and selected, but they won't show up unless he clicks OK again

Jun 14, 2011I've been deploying a lot of Debian based OSs for the desktops. I recommend the users to upgrade after every 2 months; however as we all know upgrades have their own flaws and issues, many times an upgrade does cause a lot of problems.
I'm deploying the testing branch of Debian, reason being hardware compatibility issues with older kernel and drivers. My main concern is security, I don't want the users to have big security venerabilities over time which's a consequence of not upgrading, but upgrading too may break the system (partially maybe...).
I know there's an option to only do security upgrades, but this will require a repository refresh... the consequence of not upgrading after a repository update is that if you install software using software center.. or even using aptitude or apt, it's bound to give a lot of dependency issues which users wont like.
This's the second question -- installing new packages with an updated repository and an older system gives issues.

Dec 17, 2010I am trying to setup Dual monitors with individual (non-mirrored) desktops. AMDCCCLE will only identify the monitor I want to use as primary as number 2 and the monitor I want to use as secondary as number 1 - I have tasksbars, awm, desktop items configured to use the first screen and the second screen is clear for media use. The choice seems to be determined by what output port on my graphic card.. whatever monitor is attached to the HDMI port is called 1. xrandr can only identify the 2nd monitor - the first monitor is unknown I've attached my xorg.conf

Jul 22, 2011I'm having an issue with video out put "ghosting" onto other desktops when I switch. Or if there is some video playing, it's on top, and nothing else, like menus or file browsers will be displayed over it. For example, watching something in VLC, the menus flick out, it will still select it if I can figure out where it would be, and it flashes whenever a new menu item is selected. This also happens with open shot, and a couple of other programs, like Frets on Fire. I know the flash player is kinda buggy for firefox/chrome but is there another reason for this?
I have a Toshiba A665 laptop, with Ubuntu Studio 11.4. now I'm noticing that it's starting to do it with programs that don't have video- popup menus are starting to flake.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Difference Between Native And Virtual
Jun 9, 2010I've been running Sony Vegas in VirtualBox. My machine is dual core 2ghz and has 2 GB RAM so the VB gets 90MB video and 950MB system. XP is 32 bits. I also have the identical set up installed natively. The native version gets the full 2 GB system and 512 video. A non scientific test tells me the VirtualBox system is faster. My camera is a new T2i which produces .MOV files. The only program that can read them without stutter is VLC in Ubuntu. Quicktime in both Windows version stutters all over the place. VLC in Windows is so bad I deleted it.
To the point: I'm going to build a new system for video editing using at least 8 GB RAM and Windows 7 (Sorry, I don't have the patience to wait for Lumeira or Lightworks). I like the fact that I can be in both environments without booting. But, I'd like some real world advise about this. In a pure 64 bit environment, will I be better off in a dual-boot situation or virtual? I'm reluctant to load up W7 on my current system because of the hassle associated with getting a new registration for the new system.

Dec 3, 2010I'm trying to set up an older computer for a friend that does not have one I've been using Ubuntu for a little over a year on a couple of systems, and this is the first time I have come across an issue I could not find an answer to. During the boot sequence, and right before the GUI, I'm getting a "Low Graphics Mode" warning and it tells me that the "Virtual screen too big for memory; 5120k needed, 4096 K available" then it gives me some options, and the only one that seems to lead me anywhere is the "Load Ububntu in low res mode this once" Ironically, once the Ubuntu GUI is booted up, the screen resolution is fine (1280x1024 actually - but it is an unknown monitor) This happens every time I re-boot the system and is more of an annoyance then anything else, but since its to be a gift I'd like to get rid of this error message.
