Ubuntu :: ALT+CTRL+ RIGHT Does Not Switch My Desktops
Jan 3, 2011
I lost those ALT+CTRL+RIGHT | LEFT combination to switch between my desktops. I even tried to change the combination using compiz and it also did not work. How can I restore this ?
Since I still want to do all my programming on Win32 platform, VirtualBox should be fine there, but would VirtualBox be able to manage games ( BF2, CSS )?If so then well I'm going to Ubuntu permenatly, if not, I'll just Dual boot between Windows & Ubuntu, Ubuntu for everything ( VirtualBox for programming ), and Windows os for Gaming.
My only problem there, is having to restart every time I want to play a game, that's why I was hoping VirtualBox could manage, wouldn't have to be any, fancy resolution. Also, with Firefox on linux, is it possible to use Ctrl- ( 1, 2, 3, etc... ) to switch tabs, on windows this is possible, and an a feature I love.
after karmic to lucid upgrade i ve got problem with "alt + f4" key combination. This should only close window, but it closes window and switch to tty4 (text mode) like ctrl + alt + f4 so i can switch between terminals with ctrl + alt +fX and alt+fX. I've looked at System - Preferences - Shortcuts and there everything is ok. What i've to do to fix this ?
I can't switch to shell with ctrl+alt+F1. The screen gets completely blank and nothing happens - though I can switch back to the GUI by pushing ctrl+alt+F7 again.I really miss having this option!
I am having difficulty with an Ubuntu 9.10 machine locking up. I have reinstalled the OS a number of times. I have the latest patches installed. I have another machine installed from the same CD that works fine. The computer is a Dell Optiplex GX260. When it locks up ctrl-alt-F1 will not switch to a terminal. ctrl-alt-esc does not do anything. ctrl-alt-backspace does not do anything. alt-sysreq-b will reboot the machine.
Graphics card is ATI Technologies Inc RV730XT [Radeon HD 4670]After fresh install of Debian Lenny VESA was used, neiher xserver-xorg-video-radeon or radeonhd worked.I installed ATI:s proprietary driver, after that there are 2 problems:
1) I can no longer switch to a text terminal with ctrl+alt+F# - it worked with vesa driver. There is no option "VTswitch" in xorg.conf 2) The new fglrx does not give 3D, also very bad performance - dragging windows on screen makes them stutter for instance.
I'm having an issue with video out put "ghosting" onto other desktops when I switch. Or if there is some video playing, it's on top, and nothing else, like menus or file browsers will be displayed over it. For example, watching something in VLC, the menus flick out, it will still select it if I can figure out where it would be, and it flashes whenever a new menu item is selected. This also happens with open shot, and a couple of other programs, like Frets on Fire. I know the flash player is kinda buggy for firefox/chrome but is there another reason for this?
I have a Toshiba A665 laptop, with Ubuntu Studio 11.4. now I'm noticing that it's starting to do it with programs that don't have video- popup menus are starting to flake.
not sure exactly when this broke, but for some reason I'm not able to use CTRL-ALT-F1 anymore to fall back to the first virtual console.I can kill X with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE just fine, but I'd like to be able to get a normal shell to kill things when I've messed too much with graphical stuff.
so, maybe stupidly I tried this. Which seems to have changed nothing.
so then I try
Code:
loadkeys -d
to try and get back to the default. Which doesn't seem to work. so then thinking i should reset everything, try to go in /usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty and do
Code:
loadkeys defkeymap.map.gz
Finally, I go into /etc/X11 and edit xorg.conf-vesa to uncomment
Code:
# If you'd like to switch the positions of your capslock and # control keys, use: # Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:swapcaps" and restart.
I have 3 layouts: USA, Russian and Hebrew. In Hebrew the W key is mapped to apostrophe, so Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout doesn't close tabs in Firefox. There is no workaround for it as I see by now, so I am trying to get it work this way:I want to map Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout(which is actually a Ctrl+') to be a Ctrl+w. Here is what I got from xmodmap:Code:$ xmodmap -pke | grep 25keycode 25 = w W Cyrillic_tse Cyrillic_TSE apostrophe WAs you can see, there are pairs for each layout, each pair tells what happens without and with the Shift key pressed.
I am doing a project on rdesktop. My aim is to setup a write/copy protected session. I have made rdesktop connection between two Linux machines using Xrdp.Next I want to disable the ctrl+x,ctrl+v keys and the cut and copy option in mouse right click at client side
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and already am really annoyed by Firefox, which freezes my mouse after changing a tab (with ctrl+tab, alt+#) or closing it (ctrl+w). After about one second, i can continue working as usual. Changing Tabs by just clicking on one does not freeze anything...Maybe some of you would think now if I am crazy because of complaining about such a little thing, but it is really annoying if you are used to work fluently with ff.Edit:I today noticed, that not only shortcuts in firefox, but all Hotkeys freeze my mouse for a second. For examle ctrl+c, ctrl+v, super+e or anything else.Do you have any Idea what causes this behaviour? Reinstalling ubuntu didn't change anything
" Mark the start of the text with "v", "V" or CTRL-V. The character under the cursor will be used as the start.""With CTRL-V (blockwise Visual mode) the highlighted text will be a rectanglebetween start position and the cursor."I can mark the start with "v" or "V".But it doesn't work when I push ctrl+V.
anyone has a clue why 'ctrl+a, k' nor 'ctrl+a, :kill' doesn't work for killing one of screen windows? Other screen's commands invoked with 'ctrl+a'seem to work.
I just spent a few days ripping out all the broken/buggy apps that are in the opensuse 11.2 official repos so I can finally get working software(openoffice, thunderbird, wine, eclipse, rubygems, rails, and a few others required getting the "official" versions from their respective websites to avoid strange behavior and outright broken functionality).
All of which makes updating more annoying and time-consuming. Why are opensuse packages so different anyway? Anyway, the last thing that I have noticed to fix is Konsole. For some really bizarre reason ctrl+z and ctrl+c do not work without a third keystroke: enter.Maybe this is something new with the KDE team, since they seem bent on making simple things that already work more complex, but given my experience with crappy packages in the suse repos, I am thinking this is the problem. I have looked over all the config settings that I can find and nothing fixes this affront to productivity.
I've been using Kaggregator in KDE-PIM, which uses Konqueror as the browserto go to links from Kaggregator.Unfortunately, Konqueror no longer seems tobe able to Copy highlighted material with Ctrl C, the way we've done it forever. Is this a setting I've missed? Or is this a new "feature" in Konqueror?
I'm trying to write a init.d script to daemonise a sagemath notebook server. Here's what I've done so far, I've copied /etc/init.d/single for the structure, and tried to use dtach to provide a handle to access the process. However, my main problem is issuing the signals to kill the process (Ctrl-C) from a bash script and exit dtach (Ctrl-`)
Can the fibre channel switch in the centOS5.3 cluster edition be switched for a regular router or hub? If so how would one do this? If not why does the switch have to be fibre channel?
I am using a Fling KVM switch (by Belkin), to connect 2 computers to my monitor One computer is running XP and the other is running Linux. My wireless switching mechanism has just gone the way of the saints but Belkin has supplied a software solution for this occurrence. There is a small app called Fling (surprising) that allows me to switch from the XP machine to the Linux machine but nothing to switch back to the XP. What I need to know is there a similar app for the Linux computer. (NB I have tried Synergy but have no idea how to set it up - I've been told that synergy might work).
i wanted to add two more virtual screens if it is possible so i would have four? What are the disadvantages for that? why doesn't it already come with four?
I just want to know weather it is possible by some means to set different preferences for the two desktops that are available in ubuntu?? E.g.: different backgrounds, shortcuts etc...
Is it possible to have applications open on one of my other desktops instead of the main? Suppose I wanted to have a certain database-excel type or word document open everytime, or other programs that I need open but not cluttering my main desktop, can I do it?
I would like to toggle between 2 or more wallpapers on my 4 desktops (Compiz) with a simple hot key. Is there a command I can add to the Compiz command settings that toggles between 2 wallpapers?
So I've seen the tutorials where you simply tell nautilus to not draw the wallpaper and then use ccsm's wallpaper-plugin to set different wallpapers. It's just that I don't seem to have said plugin Where could it be?
(I have no doubt this had been asked before, but Googling has turned up numerous results - many of which are written with the assumption that you're a Linux Pro, which I'm certainly not. If there is a more relevant thread already active please point me towards it.)I'm looking for a tool, or console command, to tell certain programs to automatically open on a specific desktop. i.e. Instead of TweetDeck, Thunderbird and Pidgin all appearing on Desktop 1 when I open them up, I want Thunderbird to always live on Desktop 4, TweetDeck to always live on Desktop 3, etc.
In my previous versions of ubuntu(8.04, 9.10), I have been able to open applications and folders on one desktop and then drag and drop them onto any other desktop. I upgraded to 10.04 recently on two different computers and this functionality seems to be gone. I can drag around but the cursor stops when it hits the edge of the desktop instead of popping over to the next desktop. The only visible option is to right click and choose move to right or down workspace. This is okay but it can take several steps to move them diagonally if needed.
