This just started happening and defeats the purpose of having multiple desktops. Both the floating icon and chat windows are displayed across all desktops. I can't tell if this is intentional or not..Or maybe there is something in gnome-shell that can remedy this?

My chrome browser has been broken since the last upgrade. I did (just a regular "apt-get upgrade").

I am using chrome Version 50.0.2661.75 (64-bit) running on Debian (Gnome).
I am having the following problem, since yesterday every time I want to play a video (for ex [URL]watch?v=UF8uR6Z6KLc) The music, logo in the video and functions work but the video doesn't play. I reinstalled Chrome, clean all the data, disable all the plugins, I tried as incognito and several other options and it doesn't work, before yesterday it was working (yesterday I updated all Debians packages).

I cannot copy a portion of an entire webpage using Google Chrome or Firefox when copying downwards.
Upwards works.

KDE 4.x I don't have this issue.
Using Win7 on a laptop with Firefox 41.0.2 and I'm able to scroll downwards without any issues using the same mouse that was connected to the machine with Xubuntu 14.04.
Sometimes I come across fixes for linux issues on websites. I copy the information and email it to myself for future reference in case I have to reinstall the OS again. I can do a ctrl A and ctrl c but then the entire website is copied. The ads on the side, etc.
If I put my left mouse cursor on the first word in a thread and drag/highlight downwards, my mouse cursor stops line 35 on the page. If I do the same thing but backwards, my mouse cursor goes all the way up the page. This only happens on Firefox and Google Chrome. This doesnt' happen with mousepad, Libre writer or Libre calc.
Alright, my boss has discovered an odd issue with KDE4.4 on his laptop. He downloaded a Superman wallpaper for desktop 3 (he has four desktops) using the "Get new wallpapers" functionality, and he downloaded one to his Pictures directory inside his home directory and set it as the background for desktop 1. Now if he logs off and back on, everything is fine, but if he reboots both wallpapers are lost. If he goes into the desktop settings, the wallpapers are there and selected, but they won't show up unless he clicks OK again
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been deploying a lot of Debian based OSs for the desktops. I recommend the users to upgrade after every 2 months; however as we all know upgrades have their own flaws and issues, many times an upgrade does cause a lot of problems.
I'm deploying the testing branch of Debian, reason being hardware compatibility issues with older kernel and drivers. My main concern is security, I don't want the users to have big security venerabilities over time which's a consequence of not upgrading, but upgrading too may break the system (partially maybe...).
I know there's an option to only do security upgrades, but this will require a repository refresh... the consequence of not upgrading after a repository update is that if you install software using software center.. or even using aptitude or apt, it's bound to give a lot of dependency issues which users wont like.
This's the second question -- installing new packages with an updated repository and an older system gives issues.
I recently installed Debian 8 (Jessie) with the default desktop environment (Gnome), and I use a dual monitor setup. Everything works absolutely fine beyond the fact that when I switch between desktops in the dash (Activities menu?), only the windows on my primary monitor switch, and the ones on my secondary stay the same.

I have been happily running Wheezy on the Chromebook Pixel with little or not issues. Recently I needed to re-install and decided to try Jessie. Again I was following the excellent instructions at [URL] .... except with the Jessie image.
However everytime I went to install it (after adding in the mem=4G line) it just rebooted and brought me back to the same install screen again. I just downloaded the Wheezy image again and it is installing now perfectly.

I did a search and found this link however I remember this being an issue almost two years ago when I installed Debian with a GUI. I have always used it for a server so I never realized this was still an issue until I got my new PC today and went to load Debian / Gnome on it. It showed I was disconnected however I was able to browse the web fine. It appears that so many people have complained about this problem andI am trying to understand if there is a work around and a fix in the near future

As a result, my vlc no longer works: When I run it to display a movie (any movie, I tried several) I get the sound OK, but there is no image, and the window stays small (like when playing a sound file). How do I get vlc to display movies again?

When I hook up my tv to my laptop via an HDMI cable, I am having an issue in the multiple desktop configuration. The audio and video work great in both the cloned desktop mode, and the multiple desktop mode (the extended displays cuts my laptop image in half though). However, when I am using multi-desktop, if I mouse over (or drag a window) from display one to display two, I can not bring my mouse back into the first display (it doesn't matter which display is which, tv or laptop)

If i understood correctly recovery mode uses /etc/rcS.d which starts the computer with minimal services and the normal startup is /etc/rc2.d. What can rc3, rc4 and rc5 be used for? Can anyone run different desktops (gnome, xfce, etc) using these runlevels (i am considering that the base system install is the same for all desktops)? Where i can find information about the services that are listed in the rc folders, since some (hibernate, bluetooth, apache2) are not useful to me at the moment.
I am also interested to find out what makes the computer start at it's default runlevel. Is there a way to start rc2 (or rc3, etc) from the recovery mode? When i used to start my computer, it would load into grub, and then it used to get me to the login screen. This is something i would like to avoid (the login screen), and start at the command prompt. My startups are minimal since the computer is always on. I was thinking of 'copying' rcS into rc2 for a normal console start and then start rc3 or rc4 or rc5 to load a desktop.

I am trying to setup Dual monitors with individual (non-mirrored) desktops. AMDCCCLE will only identify the monitor I want to use as primary as number 2 and the monitor I want to use as secondary as number 1 - I have tasksbars, awm, desktop items configured to use the first screen and the second screen is clear for media use. The choice seems to be determined by what output port on my graphic card.. whatever monitor is attached to the HDMI port is called 1. xrandr can only identify the 2nd monitor - the first monitor is unknown I've attached my xorg.conf
View 9 Replies View RelatedI now have 2 desktops running debian. I have virtual servers running in desktop 1, and I am hosting my photos using Gallery2. I have copied Gallery2 and the mysql over to desktop 2. I have entered port forward to desktop 1 using port 80 (using my router), and desktop 2 using port 1000. I can only access Gallery2 in desktop1. If I tried to access Gallery2 in desktop 2, I got re-directed to desktop1.
Questions:
1. Are home routers capable of port forward to more than one computers in a home network behind the firewall of the router? It is Belkin N+ router.
2. Can multiple virtual servers be setup in 2 desktops?
I have a ThinkPad W520 with nVidia Quadro 1000M and Nouveau drivers. I use external monitor with extended desktop using XRandR. My beef with this setup is that I get just one virtual desktop of a (1440+1920)x1080 size whereas what I would like to have is being able to have one separate (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my 1440x1080 external monitor with, for example, some reference material open, while have other programs working on another (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my main 1920x1080 screen. I've read that this might be possible with so called zaphod mode, but it looks like it involves static rules in xorg.conf which I would like to avoid since from time to time I need to carry my laptop with me without external monitor.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAccording to Distrowatch, the two most downloaded distributions are Mint and Ubuntu. I have put both on my computer. In Mint I can find no way to put multiple virtual desktops in my panel. In Ubuntu 10.10, when I go to synaptic package manager the settings tab with the repositories is dimmed out. I have enabled the sources list in administration but it is a less convenient way to add repositories. Despite what the linux community seems to think, I find that Simply Mepis and Pclinuxos are better for actual use.

Or if there is some video playing, it's on top, and nothing else, like menus or file browsers will be displayed over it. For example, watching something in VLC, the menus flick out, it will still select it if I can figure out where it would be, and it flashes whenever a new menu item is selected. This also happens with open shot, and a couple of other programs, like Frets on Fire. I know the flash player is kinda buggy for firefox/chrome but is there another reason for this?

I used to be able to download pictures from the camera with: SuSE, Fedora, early Ubuntu, etc. (I still can mount and download from my camera on these systems.) I now have Ubuntu 10.04LTS and no longer is my camera recognised. I cannot make sense of the forum threads on this topic, dating back to Ubuntu 8.0-something, that generally ramble on for endless pages without reaching a sensible conclusion (it's a bug, it's not a bug, it's because of gphoto2, it's a gvfs problem, etc.). So maybe there is a definitive answer why my camera that works on other linux will not work on Ubuntu, and maybe by now there is a real fix that does not involve me rebooting my laptop into an old linux distro.
`mount' shows the camera never gets automounted. Manually `mount /dev/sdb1 /media/camera' sometimes hangs and never completes, or sometimes answers immediately `mount: /dev/sdb1 is not a valid block device'. Output in /var/log is below.What's going on, and how can I fix it? I do not use, and I do not want to use, fstop, gphoto, gimp or any other specific software to access my camera (I have tried to download using these anyway and nothing works), I just want to mount the camera as though it were a flash drive in the same manner I have always done. Remember, this does not happen on other distros or early Ubuntu.Here is the relevant output notations in /var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog.
