Ubuntu Multimedia :: Uninstall The Old Drivers First Before To Install The New One?

Oct 29, 2010

ok so i have a clevo x8100 laptop with two 5780's in crossfire. Im not exactly sure where to check in linux but i remember im using the fglrx drivers...which from what i understand are the crappy "safe" drivers. I've downloaded the latest linux x64 drivers for the card...

do i need to uninstall the old drivers first before i attempt to install the new one? also, if i do need to uninstall the old one, do i need to disable all my compiz special effects too? I could just see that creating a problem. im afraid im ruining my ubuntu install now that i've got everything configured the way i want minus the video drivers.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.10 - Drivers For Legacy NVidia Card

Nov 22, 2010

Got a Gforce4 Ti 4400 graphics card. After installing 10.10 everything works but not optimal:
I cannot choose any visual effects under appearances. I don't have a NVIDIA menu. Can't use any of the features. When looking in the 'additional drivers' section, nothing shows up. Looking at some threads, I tried what is described in: p {margin-bottom: 0.08in;} [URL]

However, the result is crap. As described further down that thread, my screen goes to crap. So, re-installed everything again and I am now wondering if I should just give up. Not my nature though so here is my question:
My card is supported with the Legacy NVIDIA driver: 96.43.xx driver
Latest version on their website:
Version: 96.43.19 Certified
Release Date: 2010.11.16
Operating System: Linux
Language: English (U.S.)
File Size: 15.7 MB

This file is a .bin file. So what should I do. I read something like if you don't use something from the repository you have to re-install it every time Ubuntu's kernel is updated. However, does the driver in the repository support my legacy card. Is it wise to install the certified driver and how do I do that?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.10 - NVidia Graphics Card Drivers Update

I've sort out the windows install, but cant get into ubuntu to update the drivers. It boots as far as console but just leaves me with the text screen. How do I update the drivers from there or get a basic console screen to come up so I can update?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Enable Nvidia 8400GS Video Card Drivers?

May 17, 2010

I've tried to enable the drivers for a Nvidia 8400GS video card on Ubuntu 10.04. I've tried change desktop background > visual effects. It tells me Desktop effects can't be enabled. Sudo jockey-gtk looks and tells me no proprietary drivers are in use by my system. I've tried installing from Nvidia's site and that seems to go okay but doesn't seem to work. I have an internal video card that can't be turned off in BIOS )either ON or AUTO) that might be causing me problems.Lspci:Quote:

Ubuntu :: How To Create Disk Image And Uninstall Drivers

Aug 27, 2010

Basically, I want to be able to create the perfect disk image of a CLEAN Ubuntu installed in a 30 gb partition. The problem is, if I install Ubuntu, then some drivers are installed automatically. I am using an old computer at the moment (my main is back at home) and I want to be able to create an image so that when I restore that image onto my main computer, it is not cluttered with drivers of the old computer. Is there a method that can be used for uninstalling drivers?

I am looking for the cleanest way to uninstall drivers, hopefully to the point where it will not leave any "residue" That is my first question. My second question (in general about disk image--I have never actually created nor restored an image): Can I create an image of partition A and restore the image on partition B? Basically, creating an image of one partition and restoring it on another partition. Or does it have to be restored on the original partition?

Also, what if it is the same scenario but partition B is a larger size? I know that if partition B is smaller, it cannot be done because the image is larger than the partition. Finally, can partition A be restored onto a different hard drive? I have yet to find answers of these questions on different forums in other sites (this is my 3rd try). I know that the Ubuntu community is extremely active and more than willing to share their knowledge.

Ubuntu :: Uninstall ATI Drivers And Reinstall Original Files

Jun 12, 2011

I am running a recently installed minimal install. I am having some fun building the system up but trying to keep things slim. I have installed the ATI catalyst drivers working from the tutorial here under 'Installing the Restricted Drivers Manually': [URL]... After successfully getting the ATI driver running, I realise I really don't need or want it and am wanting to uninstall it completely and return the config to the way it was. Some of that I can do with the aid of some of the links I have found but installing the ATI drivers no doubt killed some of the packages that were there in the first place (graphics was fine in the first place incidentally). Question: What might these squashed packages be so I can reinstall them and have graphics setup as it was before I installed the ATI drivers and how can I remove all trace of the ATI drivers?

OpenSUSE Install :: Acpi Better / Card Went To Legacy What Version Still Has Ati Drivers For Card

Dec 6, 2009

i have a little experience with ubuntu but i have had bugs that are not resolvable at this time in ubuntu. so instead of giving wild bill back my pc i am looking for a new distro. my concerns with ubuntu revolve around acpi. no fan control and high temp. the 2nd problem that is almost overlookable is the ata1 softreset error. it usually is no problem but occasionally have to do manual fsck to fix. so heres my laptop specs. toshiba a305d-s6848. amd turion x2 ati x1250 integrated. 3gb ram. 500gb hd vista and ubuntu 9.04 dual boot grub with 100gb ubuntu and the rest vista. so q1= what suse version would be best?

q2= is suse's acpi better? ubuntu runs all features but fan control
q3= is suse as easy to install? or harder
q4= ati graphics i know for my card went to legacy what version still has the ati drivers for my card
q5= is suse easier or harder to work with and get everything working.

i know no linux is or opsys is perfect. im just looking for one that is stable and works the pc correctly. i know its a big thing to ask. i know no one can tell me that. but just looking for suggestions. im thinking of downloading suse and does all the downloads support live sessions.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To Set Nvidia Drivers - Dual Monitor Without Proprietary Drivers?

Apr 8, 2010

I have been using ubuntu for quite a long time, and for the first time, I am now unable to set nvidia drivers to work. I have just install ubuntu 9.10 amd64 on an AMD 64 athlong X2 with a GEForce 6500 nvidia card.

The only reason I need the proprietary drivers is to use two monitors.

I am going crazy, I have tested everything I have found on the web. I have tried all the nvidia drivers version, I have tried envyng, ... but nvidia do not work!!

I am trying Xinerama with nv, but it does not work either!!!

Here is my xorg.conf file in which I have tried to use nv driver to set dual monitor. X fails to load and it says that screen 0 is deleted, that devices are found but there are no matches in the config file. Any clue?

Ubuntu :: PCI Relay Card Drivers On 9.04?

Apr 1, 2010

I am trying to install the drivers for the Advantech PCI 1761 relay card, and annoyingly, I have to compile them from the source, since Advantech doesn't offer preset drivers for any form of linux beside RedHat and Debian. I have two .ko files

advdrv_core.ko
pci1761.ko

the first one is required for all advantech cards, the second one is specific to my relay card. I installed the first module fine by using:

sudo insmod advdrv_core.ko

but when I do:

sudo insmod pci1761.ko

I get the following errors:

[14192.558039] pci1761: Unknown symbol adv_process_info_check_event
[14192.558236] pci1761: no symbol version for advdrv_unregister_driver

theses are actually only two, there are like 100 sets of unknown symbol errors. The strange thing is that the first .ko file, advdrv.ko, references the same symbols, yet it installed fine. What Gives? Any ideas? I really need this module to get installed. These drivers were updated March 10th, 2010.

Ubuntu :: No Drivers Installed For GFX Card - Lag With Games

Jan 7, 2010

First off I cant seem to get any drivers installed for my GFX card, I've got an ATI Radeon X1300 and when I go to System > Admin > Hardware drivers it seems to find nothing. I'm pretty sure thats whats causing my next problem; Lag with games. I installed one of my favorite games, Blockland and ran it with Wine, First thing right off the bat is its lagging like hell. But, an even worse problem is happening. It doesn't even seem to start up now...

Alright, now let's go to java. One of my other favorite games, Minecraft, A game made with java, doesn't seem to work. I can play it for about 10 - 20 seconds until the game just turns white. There's also Dwarf Fortress, and it seems that I cant even get the linux version running. I looked at the requirements and got some of them, but not all and when I try to run it nothing even happens.

Lastly, Steam. So far steam is working fine, except when I try and install a game off of it, Steam just immediately closes... So, If you need my specs or anything just ask. I'd relaly like to fix some of these things so I use Ubuntu over windows, because I just love the feel more than windows.
