I have a Sapphire HD4850 X2 1G GDDR3 PCI-E graphis card, and presently I ruin a Windows 7 OS, but am moving to Ubuntu GUI Desktop, and was wandering where I could get Linux drivers for this card (and they are NOT available from the Sapphire site), or how I could get Windows drivers to work with this card, I do have 4 monitors using this card so I need the drivers and ability to use 4 monitors.

I've sort out the windows install, but cant get into ubuntu to update the drivers. It boots as far as console but just leaves me with the text screen. How do I update the drivers from there or get a basic console screen to come up so I can update?

i am running 10.04 64 bit and did an update today and now i do not have any graphics card drivers and my virtual box is not working at all i have tried to reinstall the drivers through the hardware drivers and get told i have to look at the installation of this driver failed.
have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log
and when i try to open my virtual box i get

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 9.10, and it seems I'm unable to get the drivers for my graphics card. I know they exist, as I've downloaded them before (I switched back to Windows for a short period. Bad idea there. :/), and I know they work fine, but when I go to "System > Administration > Hardware Drivers" (where I've always gotten them from), they aren't there.
The only difference between this install and my old one, is that I used a USB drive to install, instead of a disk (I had run out).
Although I did have to change to boot order in the BIOS to get it to boot into the drive, I don't think that's the issue.
Before we start, I wanted to say I noticed the "Ubuntu cannot fix or improve these drivers." Please read anyways.
I've tried to activate the "ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" from the System>Administration>Additional drivers and it has an error halfway through the process.
I use an ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5770 in my computer (if that helps), and Ubuntu is on my USB(8GB).
The error message I receive (after awhile of waiting) is :
SystemError: installArchives() failed
When I start ubuntu I get a black screen, I can't do anything, this started when I installed the new driver for my graphics card. I don't know what to do. I have a i7 core (64-bit) and nvidia GTX 260 (twice).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install the drivers for my nvidia graphics card. I downloaded the shell script from the nvidia website. However, there's something peculiar going on. When I execute the shell script it says it cannot find my kernel headers, yet I can verify that my /usr/include/linux/kernel.h does exist. I have selinux on, but just installed os with it on, so contexts are fresh. Checked them as well. After doing some research I found something out. When I run a 'uname -a' I get this.

I see that the error in the nvidia shell script can't locate the header files for the RUNNING kernel version which makes sense. Why would yum install that version instead of the one in 'uname -a'? Or am I misunderstanding something?
How to install this Nvidia Geforce 8800 driver. I've been told that the installation files I got will do everything - it doesn't. I've been told about some kind of xorg.conf file that doesn't exist- xorg.conf-vesa does though, I assume that's vesa drivers and theres something else for other drivers.

Anyway, I cleverly installed the most recent drivers for my graphics card, and it killed Ubuntu - it won't start now. This happens on Windows, too, but Windows will System Restore for me. How might I fix this in Ubuntu?
I can choose Ubuntu from the grub menu, but then the screen goes blank, the fan on my computer goes into overdrive, and nothing happens.

how to enable the Gnome Shell with an AMD 6950 graphics card and the default Fedora 15 drivers? I may try the AMD Catalyst proprietary drivers but from history those usually lag behind the Fedora versions. I also read some people had issues with the current AMD Catalyst drivers in the Catalyst guide thread.
Also, the AMD 6950 graphics card fan is at full speed all the time in Fedora 15. I do believe you can with the Catalyst drivers using aticonfig but was wondering about the default Fedora 15 drivers?

I've been trying to get Warcraft 3 and WoW to run on ubuntu via Wine, so far I managed to get them installed and running but I always have problems with graphics (poor rendering as oposed to when I ran them on windows). So I figured that maybe the graphics card/driver aren't installed correctly.
On the terminal I got this information: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) I checked System > Administration > Additional Drivers When it finishes searching for drivers I get the message "No proprietary drives are in use on this system" (I have no idea what this means, I read elsewhere that I should check this) So um, I don't know If any of this is useful or necessary to fix my problem.
After having some trouble with Intel graphics I decided to pick up a PCI Nvidia graphics card. Now I am wondering what driver to use. Is the open source drive good enough to use or should I install the Nvidia driver? I know that things are generally easier with the default driver, especially for support on older cards, but I would like to get the best performance I can. I have an older Dell Inspiron 4550 w/ 2G memory and 38G HD. I believe I have GE440 graphics card. I am running 10.04, but the graphics are slower than I would like and when I tried to upgrade to 10.10, my card was not supported and I had to re-install 10.04.
- Can anyone recommend a good graphics card to choose for an upgrade for this machine?
- Is changing graphics cards pretty much the same as installing a memory chip, What is the best way to do the upgrade?
