I have intel GMA 4500M graphic card. In synaptic package manager I found out that there are a bunch of installed packages for nvidia and ATI. I was wondering if I can delete this files since i have INTEL graphic card. Any recommendations for uninstalling unneeded files?
View 9 RepliesI upgraded to ubuntu a few days ago and it didn't install properly but i managed to fix all the package errors. However the graphics drivers aren't working and i tried to fix it in recovery mode but its not helping at all. ubuntu is just starting up so it looks like a terminal.

This HowTo will describe how to install the proprietary NVIDIA graphics card drivers using exclusively the command line. when I boot into Fedora right before the login screen I get a black screen with a command line.How can I uninstall the drivers and get it work again without ATI Drivers? I have switchable graphics and for Fedora have to switch them in the BIOS but with integrated as well as discrete graphics I get the same black screen.I have the LiveDVD ready and only need advice on howto log in in text mode or recover via LiveDVD.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently switched my primary desktop over from Windows 7 to Fedora 14. I successfully installed the OS on to my hard drive and booted up, following which I installed all of the updates and rebooted. After my first reboot I downloaded the 10.11 Radeon driver and installed it (because the 10.12 was having an md5 hash issue), the install was (supposedly) successful, but when I restarted my computer it first progresses to this screen (copied from softpedia) and then goes black for a second, and then returns to that screen and halts at the end of the progess bar and does nothing. I am looking for help to get back into my system.

View 2 Replies View Related1) Whenever a new release of Ubuntu comes out, I've always done a full replacement (Booted up live CD, formatted / and formatted /home) to ensure there's zero incompatibilities, including configuration files in my /home. That has, finally, gotten annoying and I was wondering what the actual chances of a configuration file causing problems was in the 6 months that Ubuntu was released in. Also, special consideration for Gnome 3 (aka gnome-shell) coming out with the current gnome configs.
2)Any way to remove unneeded config files automatically? I don't always use purge when I remove a package just in case I want to reinstall it, well weeks later I def don't want it, is there an apt or dpkg command that will automatically remove them after the package is gone? I know autoclean and autoremove handle orphans and unneeded .deb's
3) How stable is Sidux in reality? Ran it in a VM and had a few errors every so often while using it, but i wasnt sure how much of that was the fact it was a VM. Some say its stable enough for daily use, some say it breaks every other day
I think the problems are connected to the ATI drivers I've installed. I used the ones I got off of the ATI graphics driver repository specifically for OpenSuse. I would like to try the latest drivers off ATI's website again. I understand they are much more recent than the ones in the repository. The first time I tried them they didn't work, though they have worked in the past for me on a previous incarnation of this system. Do I have to uninstall the current drivers first? If so, how do I be certain I have uninstalled all that is necessary since I didn't keep track of the details in the first place? I can find some of them using the search function but perhaps not all. I would imagine there is a way to do that using YaST since I got everything off that one repository.
which option in the ATI graphics driver installer (ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_6.run) should I use? I'm using 11.2-64 on an Intel based system. Will the 32 bit drivers work on a 64 system? As I noted, the automatic option doesn't work for me. From reading some of the other posts here it seems perhaps I should start in level 3 and use the cli from there. That's not what I did before. Or should I try the latest 11.3 milestone since that seems to have better graphics card support?

Basically, I want to be able to create the perfect disk image of a CLEAN Ubuntu installed in a 30 gb partition. The problem is, if I install Ubuntu, then some drivers are installed automatically. I am using an old computer at the moment (my main is back at home) and I want to be able to create an image so that when I restore that image onto my main computer, it is not cluttered with drivers of the old computer. Is there a method that can be used for uninstalling drivers?
I am looking for the cleanest way to uninstall drivers, hopefully to the point where it will not leave any "residue" That is my first question. My second question (in general about disk image--I have never actually created nor restored an image): Can I create an image of partition A and restore the image on partition B? Basically, creating an image of one partition and restoring it on another partition. Or does it have to be restored on the original partition?
Also, what if it is the same scenario but partition B is a larger size? I know that if partition B is smaller, it cannot be done because the image is larger than the partition. Finally, can partition A be restored onto a different hard drive? I have yet to find answers of these questions on different forums in other sites (this is my 3rd try). I know that the Ubuntu community is extremely active and more than willing to share their knowledge.
I am running a recently installed minimal install. I am having some fun building the system up but trying to keep things slim. I have installed the ATI catalyst drivers working from the tutorial here under 'Installing the Restricted Drivers Manually': [URL]... After successfully getting the ATI driver running, I realise I really don't need or want it and am wanting to uninstall it completely and return the config to the way it was. Some of that I can do with the aid of some of the links I have found but installing the ATI drivers no doubt killed some of the packages that were there in the first place (graphics was fine in the first place incidentally). Question: What might these squashed packages be so I can reinstall them and have graphics setup as it was before I installed the ATI drivers and how can I remove all trace of the ATI drivers?

The installation works fine, but the drivers not, it seems like Nouveau run's better.
So... can i uninstall the nvidia drivers and fedora automatically use Nouveau??, or the system loose both drivers?
I have a fresh install of 11.04. I am trying to install the "additional drivers" Broadcom STA wireless on my dell laptop. The drivers worked correctly pre-install on the boot up test run, but now they won't activate or uninstall.
On activation attempt, it says : installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log.

While trying live usb versions of different gnome and kde distributions, i noticed very unusable performance, however since i read that live media versions of linux did not perform well, i merely assumed that was the reason.
The sad thing is though, i installed ubuntu 10.4 x64 and i am still having the same problems. The only way to get the system slightly usable is to completely disable desktop effects. However, even then, it sort of feels like windows xp before you have installed graphics drivers - like it's not using the hardware at all.
Even the little fish screensaver is basically unrunnable.
My graphics card is an ati radeon x1950 pro AGP version. I read on their site that they only support up to x-org 11.4 and i heard that the linux distributions as of now are beyond that - so i cannot install the official drivers for it (whether they are any good anyway?). I saw in the package manager there are radeonhd drivers also, but i didn't really know what these are and this card is before ati started making their hd series.
So basically, i don't really know what to do or where to turn to in regards to this.
Some other small, unrelated questions are:
How can i increase the amount scrolled with each click of my scroll wheel so it's equivalent to windows? it seems to be one line at the moment, where as in windows i think it is something like 3 - whatever the case, it seems painfully slow.
Also, of my 5 button intellimouse explorer, strangely, the extra forward and back buttons seem to work, but the middle click button doesn't - or at least, holding it in and dragging the mouse to scroll doesn't seem to work - or should it be used for something different in linux?
I made my Ubuntu-server(with GNOME desktop) unbootable after playing with the binary drivers for nvidia(my card is gtx 470). I was able to use it in the past with the proprietary drivers, but somehow I tweaked some settings, tried to install new drivers etc and actually I don't remember much of what I did because I had finals at school so my ubuntu install just remained unbootable like that. All I know is that I can't even boot in recovery mode (command line). I tried to boot with a live cd, chroot into the ubuntu partition and fix the graphics but it didn't work.

I need to enable drivers so games like Minecraft will run better. Whenever I install the drivers, 11.04 fails to load, or it'll just give me a barrage of glitches. I think this is possibly because I have to disable kernel mode-setting on my PC and the new drivers with 11.04 need KMS to work. Though that's just my guess. In Ubuntu 10.04 hardware accelerated OpenGL works fine with KMS off. So does anybody know how I can use those older drivers in 11.04? OR Does anybody know how to make Ubuntu 11.04's drivers work with KMS disabled?

and when i try to open my virtual box i get

After I installed my ati grapics driver (the ati driver from the ati website) my ubuntu has this weird problem. When loading there is a line that cought my attention:

I think that has something todo with the other error I get which is:

giving up.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 9.10, and it seems I'm unable to get the drivers for my graphics card. I know they exist, as I've downloaded them before (I switched back to Windows for a short period. Bad idea there. :/), and I know they work fine, but when I go to "System > Administration > Hardware Drivers" (where I've always gotten them from), they aren't there.
The only difference between this install and my old one, is that I used a USB drive to install, instead of a disk (I had run out).
Although I did have to change to boot order in the BIOS to get it to boot into the drive, I don't think that's the issue.
I have a Sapphire HD4850 X2 1G GDDR3 PCI-E graphis card, and presently I ruin a Windows 7 OS, but am moving to Ubuntu GUI Desktop, and was wandering where I could get Linux drivers for this card (and they are NOT available from the Sapphire site), or how I could get Windows drivers to work with this card, I do have 4 monitors using this card so I need the drivers and ability to use 4 monitors.
