Ubuntu Multimedia :: Why Is The Layers Palette In GIMP Not Showing Any Info

Mar 10, 2010

I add layers and they don't show up and the controls at the bottom of the layers palette (add layer, bin, etc) are all blanked out and i can't select them. It's impossible to do anything with layers in GIMP as it is at the moment and i need to get it sorted. I have tried closing down the layers tab, restarting GIMP and then adding the tab again but i get the same result, a layers palette that won't respond or show any layers that i do add.

Fedora :: Can't Find Layers Box In Gimp / Get It?

Aug 8, 2009

I do a lot of artistic stuff, so I need a good graphics program. I think Gimp will be perfectly fine for my needs for the time being, but I can't find the layers box. When I opened it for the first time, only the toolbox and tool options were open, and I can't find anything about the layers. I checked the online manual, and that didn't help at all. I have version 2.6.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Gimp 2.7 And Python (Import Error - No Module Named Gimp)

Mar 2, 2010

If you had Gimp 2.6 (with gimp-plugin-registry installed) and installed Gimp 2.7 to try its new goodies, but Layer Effects are not showing, and when executing "gimp" from console you get these *nasty* errors:

Code:
This is a development version of GIMP. Debug messages may appear here.
gimp-user-install: migrating from /home/user/.gimp-2.6
Traceback (most recent call last):

If you haven't install the 2.7 version yet. Before upgrading, backup "python" directory and then just restore it after installing 2.7.

General :: Adjust Terminal Color Palette?

Jul 12, 2010

I'm on Debian with KDE 3.5 desktop and I use the Konsole terminal emulator. What I would like to know is: is it possible to tweak the color palette, for example to change my red to something a bit brighter? I use the "white on black" schema in Konsole and all colors are great except that red is far too dark on the black background. I found this Perl script that is supposed to change the palette but, while it prints the current palette just fine, I can see no difference between the various palettes.Searching for solutions mostly brings up pages about changing the scheme in Konsole or how to use colors in prompts and ls output etc, which is not quite what I need.

Ubuntu Installation :: Gimp - Gimp-help-en - On 10.04 Lucid Lynx - Installing Other Applications And Preforming System Tasks?

Jun 12, 2010

Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.

Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)

1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:

2. Then load up the language support application:

3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.

4. Fix'd

I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.

Ubuntu :: VNC Over 2 Layers Of SSH?

Jan 19, 2010

I've got the OK from my manager to set this up, so I just need a little help. I've seen the tutorials on setting up VNC over SSH which works all fine and dandy, but I need access to my work PC when I'm not on the University Network. To log in to the command line I would have to ssh from putty to a central box that is visible to the outside network (i.e. the world) and from that box, I would have to ssh into my workstation.

Logical flow: SSH-Putty --> SSH-Midddleman --> Desktop-command line

How would I setup VNC to deal with the middleman?

Ubuntu :: OpenOffice Draw : How To Send Layers Back

Feb 24, 2010

OpenOffice 3.0 on Ubuntu 9.04

I have a card project in OpenOffice Draw. In this project is a bitmap with the year 2009 embedded in it. I want to change that to read 20 and I can place the current year as a text layer on top of it.

I have a grid laid out on this bitmap, and I have overlaid text information such as date, time and frequency.

I got hold of the bitmap and cut it, leaving my data there but the form behind it missing. I pasted that into gimp and did the editing, saved it as a .bmp file and loaded that into Draw. I copied the bitmap from this bmp file and pasted it back into my card project.

The bitmap is now sitting on top of my data and I want to send it to the rear so my data sits on top of it.

I can not find a single reference to how to send layers to the front or to the back in OpenOffice Draw.

Launchpad.net is a way to get help online, but I am completely lost on that site, so I am asking here on the Ubuntu forum.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04 64-bit: Gimp Can't Open Jpeg

Apr 25, 2011

Somewhere along the line I have managed to get the below error when loading a jpeg in the gimp (either with 'open with' on context menu or directly)Running as an unprivileged user

Code:

Calling error for procedure 'file-jpeg-load':

Procedure 'file-jpeg-load' not found
Opening '/home/fortyfourgalena/Desktop/photos/liza/inkosanalodge_20061201/20061201_171151_PC010620.jpg' failed: Procedure 'file-jpeg-load' not found

[code]...

This happens on a system running 10.04 / 64-bit. As I seem to recall a recent gimp update (might be wrong), I checked a 32-bit 10.04 laptop and it does not show the behavior. For information: the 64-bit system has some additional stuff installed for image processing (ufraw and darktable) but I have been using this already for a while without issues. The other main change on this 64-bit system before I noticed the problem was the installation of a geforce 8400 video card including the 'nomodeset' option in grub and install of the latest driver from the nvidia website. verify that the gimp on a 64-bit system is still functioning.Further a 'repair' from within synaptic throws the following error

Code:

E: /var/cache/apt/archives/gimp_2.6.8-2ubuntu1.2_amd64.deb: subprocess dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile returned error exit status 2

Note: I found some messages regarding this problem on the web but they were referring to older kernels (2.6.8); and people reverted back to an even older kernel. And yes, there have been a recent kernel upgrade.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Gimp & Wacom - Sketching Brushes

Feb 4, 2010

I have been recently using the GIMP, transferring from adobe photoshop. and the truth is i have been pleasantly surprised with GIMP, especially when comparing prices from the two. Anyway the one thing i have not been able to do, that i assume is possible is make a brush that i am able to sketch with with my wacom tablet.

what i mean by this is in adobe i was able to create a brush that would react affectively to the pressure senstivity and i would get nice realistic looking sketches that looked like pencil sketches. when i barley pressed on my tablet i would be light and when i pressed hard i was able to get the black line needed. i have messed around with the pressure settings on the brushes but havent noticed any difference when i press hard on my tablet or barely press at all.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Make Digital Camo On Gimp?

Mar 23, 2010

I've been searching for a while now and come up empty handed, but after some research on the history of digital camouflage and how it was created I was able to devise a simple method for creating at least a close approximation of the real thing.

Step 1: start with a picture of the "texture" you intend to use. it doesn't matter if it's a low resolution picture because you are going to intentionally pixelate it

Step 2: use the noise plugin "pick" and create some static in the picture. I've found that you can just set everything to maximum and apply the pick with good results.

Step 3: (optional) if you want this to be a repeating pattern, at this time apply the "make seamless" tool under Map plugins.

Step 4: Apply a pixel blur. dial it in just to where you start to see hard pixel edges forming. In most digital camo patterns, the pixels are taller than they are wide, about a 3:2 ratio

Step 5: Choose the number of colors you want in your camo pattern. Virtually all digital patterns are either three or four colors, but never any more than that. Change the image mode from RGB to 4 color indexed. Then you can change it back to RGB if you wish to change the colors in your camo.

you can play with the settings on each step to dial in something that looks proper. The proper scale for your camo is roughly 1/4" tall pixels. Try playing with different textures, or even non digital camo prints. In about two minutes we've just created both a woodland and a desert digital print that is close enough to pass for MARPAT using free software.

Debian Multimedia :: Extremely Slow Loading Of Image Files In GIMP

Jun 16, 2010

I've had this odd, stubborn problem that seems to be related to the nouveau video driver and certain kernel builds: opening or saving full resolution jpeg image files using GIMP takes from 1-5 minutes and causes xorg CPU usage to reach almost 100%.This also occurs when using UFRaw to open Canon raw image files. The problem is not intermittent, it happens each time I open a file. Opening photos in the default image viewer works fine. This bug has vexed me on and off for the last couple of months, and seems to be triggered by a combination of kernel version and the Nouveau driver. I switched to Debian Squeeze from Ubuntu 10.04 because I was experiencing slow image open times in Ubuntu 10.04 (using the Nouveau driver).I did not experience the bug running Squeeze with the nv driver and kernel 2.6.32-3.

I did not have the bug running Squeeze with the nouveau driver and kernel 2.6.32-5 backported from Sid.I began experiencing the bug again after the Squeeze updates on June 14th (still running nouveau and kernel 2.6.32-5). I update daily so it's likely to be that day's updates which caused the bug to reappear.Just for grins, I installed the Liquorix kernel. The bug does not occur using kernel 2.6.34-0.dmz.10-liquorix-686 and the nouveau video driver.I have a Nvidia FX5500 video card. I prefer the nouveau driver to nv as my display seems to behave better. The Nvidia proprietary drivers are not an option because they produce X freezes when I am doing photo editing. The liquorix kernel seems to be working fine, but for long-term stability I'd rather be running a mainline Debian kernel.
