Debian Multimedia :: ITunes Alternatives For Debian?
Nov 23, 2010
I am running Debian Sid (aptosid) and KDE 4.4 on a Toshiba A100 Satellite laptop with kernel 2.6.36 and have an iPod Nano and iPod Touch 2g.I would really like to use it with linux instead of Windows 7. Is there an iTunes alternative for linux?
I've been Gnome user since I made switch from Ubuntu to Debian. But now I want to try xfce in Debian, but I do not know well what are alternatives for Gnome applications there. I haven't used xfce since Ubuntu 9.10 (Xubuntu).some alternatives for theese apps:
I would like to know if there exists an article explaining how update-alternatives integrates with Freedesktop.org MIME. How do these systems coexist? How do they cooperate? Lately KDE and GNOME apps seemed to agree on default applications more and more; it seems there still exists an ordering problem [URL] , section Default application ordering), but things are generally working.
However, now I notice that some applications (which I've known for a long time to not be very Linux desktop friendly, I'm looking at Mozilla first, but this time I can't blame them without reason) use some totally different system, Alternatives. The example that comes to mind now is Icedove. Is there going to be a consensus on the default system or we'le have different applications using different systems?
I bought an iPod classic and am currently looking for alternatives to replace iTunes on openSUSE. As far as I understand the following are to be considered: Amarok, Banshee, Floola, gtkpod and Yamipod.
I want to listen to some messages on a website: http:http://thegospelcoalition.org/resources/a/Introduction-to-the-Christ-Centered-Model-and-an-Introduction-to-the-Christ// but they are Itunes. How would I listen to these on Debian? I tried to play them and it didn't work: gxine opened, but failed to start; I right clicked on the listen button, but didn't get any other options.
I'm looking for the best iTunes alternative that has almost these features:
- being able to edit the track's name/album (songs in the iPod) - adjusting volume of tracks
I'm currently using Rhythmbox. I have tried Exaile and Amarok just doesn't work for me. I can't recall what made me turn away from Banshee, too. I'm not really into Wine so installing iTunes itself is not viable.
Are there any viable alternatives to mythtv? I find the setup to be very cumbersome and the keyboard interface is a poor second to Windows Media Player for a basic PVR system on a desktop computer.
Mythtv seems an overkill for what I require, just to simply watch TV using my DVB-T input and record shows when I'm away from home.
anyone of you know some good skype alternatives for ubuntu 10.04 ?by alternatives i don't mean something like gtalk where i can only use google account.some alternative where i can log in with my skype account like amsn, emesene, pidgin can log in using my msn account..
I want to do some amateur voice over works. I need an audio editor that can also play the video simultaneously to sync with the character's lip movements. The problem is my video sources are in h264 mkv, I guess it is not very friendly with many softwares.
Here's what I've searched (tried some of them too) and the results:LiVES -> can't compile with kernel 2.6.38, the offered patch (in sf) rejected (maybe different source file from the one specified in the patch)Cinerella, can't accept mkv or mp4. (after that I tried to get the source video loaded to Cinerella)x264, transcoding to lower the resolution -> no avi container output, sync problem with raw h264 stream outputavidemux_qt, trying to mux the transcoded video to avi -> crashed with h264 input video, either in elementary stream or matroska format (I doubt Cinerella will accept avi videos with h264 codec, if I could ever make one)ffmpeg, transcode from h264 to xvid -> shared library error: libavutil.so.49 not found xvidenc shell script -> no mencoder (I'm using mplayer2)
I keep getting this error message, I did a search and didn't find a solution to my Java browser problems gcjwebplugin error: Failed to run /etc/alternatives/../../bin/java. For more detail rerun "firefox -g" in a terminal window.
I just got a new iphone (yay me) but later realised that as I have Ubuntu, it is very difficult to get itunes installed on it.
Having said that, I've got Wine installed and attempted to download itunes 7.something and even though the whole process worked, it appears that when I try to access itunes the whole screen goes black and then if I scroll across the screen with my mouse it lights up various bits of what's behind the black screen and then after a while it tells me that it cannot access itunes at all...
So I thought, perhaps I should uninstall itunes, but in doing that it still appeared in my wine folder, so I uninstalled wine, which still appeared in my Applications list, so I edited my applications list and then tried to re-install wine from scratch (I know I sound dumb already - but I was desperate ok!!!). So now wine is installed on my computer somewhere but it now doesn't show up in my Applications list at all and I can't seem to get it back on there - any suggestions there would also help...
But my main objective is to try and uninstall itunes properly (maybe from the terminal window - but I don't know how to even do that) and attempt to re-install it to see if it works again.
I need to do this in order to sync my iphone. Cannot seem to do it with Amarok as I don't have Installer.Apps on my iphone, and cannot get THAT without syncing it with itunes to begin with....
Below is the recipe I've used to compile dwm from source on Squeeze
su apt-get install devscripts debian-keyring apt-get build-dep dwm exit
It all seems to work, however debuild gave an error about secret keys. Is this a sensible procedure? What happens in the (probably unlikely) event there is another source patch?I've gone to a tiling window manager as the result of the purchase of a wide screen LCD monitor. I like to have some stuff down the right hand side when running Firefox and OpenOffice in the main panes. Any configuration tricks welcome. Modern screens are the wrong shape!
Just got a pretty fresh install of Debian/XFCE. Both monitors work out of the box on my 8400GS. I was unable to find an option to change it so I can span is as 1 work space instead of having them mirrored.
I installed debian etch on my system. Installation done successfully, but when it boots up the X server is not starting and showing error. Note : It is perfectly working with debian lenny. Configuration : Intel DG41RQ ,1GB Ram ,160GB HDD.
I just a newbie.i want to try customize my desktop.i found a website shown linux desktop very greatfull, like this :but i don't know how to start it.any expert guys please let me know the guiding for me to start this.
Found this 'Startup Disk Creator' in Ubuntu,it is useful, how we get it install in Debian Squeeze? There's a Unetbootin for Debian, but it pull in lots of qt stuff,I don't like it.
I am running Debian testing on my box and iceweasel 5 with several addons. My question is the following: is there a way to export above all my addons settings to a file? I would like to be able to install on another debian machine the same iceweasel 5 and have the same addons installed (if I could have even the same toolbar it would be dream) automatically.
I have installed Debian Squeeze 6.0.2.1 amd64 from DVD-1.iso (4.4 GB) and I cannot install Synaptic Package Manager or Wine because they are not in the repos.
i have fresh installed debian wheezy xfce4, and using slim to start it but i can't get reboot, shutdown and thunar can't open flash and others volumes. i using .xinitrc (exec ck-launch-session startxfce4)
I have an old compaq pressario (with a compaq cd/dvd player + HP cd writer/Reader) with Debian Etch and a gnome desktop, and I would like to extract the mp3 dvd a friend gave me (He made it from bittorrent). On a XP box the cd is played without problem but I would like to extract and play each song on Etch. I have Sound juicer which works allright for usual audio cd but not with this mp3 thing. I have tried to define a new profile with params I have found on the net for mp3 but up to now without success. I even don't know if it's a problem of hardware being too old, or if I could solved this with the appropriate software
I want to install VGA driver on debian squeeze. my VGA is "Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller".I do not know which driver I must install for this VGA.Does Linux recognize related driver ?
I have ubuntu on my laptop, i haven't updated it to 10.4 yet but i've only had it on here for a couple weeks. Anyways, i plugged my ipod into the computer and had it working with rhythmbox just fine. However, when i unplugged my ipod, i looked at it and there are no songs, absolutely nothing. When i plug it back in, it shows on rhythmbox that i have all my songs back...but the second i take it out there are no songs. I don't know what this problem is, but basically i just want itunes back :[ I guess theres something about getting a virtual machine to be able to run itunes with? that sounds nice...but is it super complicated?
I was using the gnome-shell for a little bit to get accustomed to the coming change in march but I removed it. Shortly after, I decided to update my wine, and get the lastest itunes.exe. I save the exe, allowed executing permissions and ran the install. IT WORKED. I did not allow it to be my default player, and I did not allow autorun. whenever i open it says installation error but I hit ok and I am graced with itunes. I still can sync my iphone with it, I guess it can't recognize it.
occasional crashes when I get click happy but playback works most of the time. some times i have to logout in order to try it again. authorized itunes purchases work thru it.
What in your opinions are the best iTunes alternatives?
I plan on getting an iPod touch soon, and need to be able to...
-Change settings (maybe) -Sync Music -Sync Games (IMPORTANT) -Sync Movies -Be able to categorize videos into TV shows or movies and by season.
If there isnt something that cant do all of that, getting itunes 10 to work on Wine/PlayonLinux, Because it installs, but just looks very messed up when I open it.
