I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) with Skype, and I can't get the microphone to work. I can hear them, but they can't hear me. I tried the same headset with my Windows system, and it works fine, so the headset is OK.
I looked at "Sound Preferences", and noticed that when I click on the "Input" tab, the area where you can adjust the volume is set at the minimum, and grayed out, so I can't adjust it.

My audio and video used to work great in skype. Two days ago connected my laptop and TV, in order to use the TV as a second monitor, to watch a football match (I only have IPTV). Only thing I had to do was to go to System -> Preferences -> Sound and switch (in the hardware tab) my Internal Audio Hardware from Analog Stereo Duplex to Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input.
So after the match I switched it back to Analog Stereo Duplex and proceeded to skype with my girlfriend. Problem was, the mic stopped working. It works just fine in 'Input' tab of my sound preferences, as well as in sound recorder. She, in skype, heard nothing but static. Test call doesn't work either. Now I've done all the usual stuff, Skype isn't allowed to automatically adjust mixer levels and my mic is already boosted. I've reinstalled skype and everything. I'm running out of ideas.

I am using UNR 9.10
Sound recording from build-in mic was fine in skype and cheese after i installed UNR in my Acer Aspire One 110L in early December last year.
But somehow, i just realized that my sound recording was not functioning when i use skype this morning.
(i don't know since when this problem occur as i never use skype and cheese in past few weeks and i did update a few time from synaptic and install ubuntu-boot kernel)
just now i remove ubuntu-boot and reinstall the 2.6.31-17-generic kernel and run
sudo dpkg-reconfigure pulseaudio
but skype and cheese still does not record from build in microphone but only record from external microphone.
One weird thing is Sound recorder do record from both the build-in mic and external mic.
i tried "parec -r test.wav" and "parec -p test.wav" and it also record from both mic.
Anyone know how to configure my netbook so that the internal mic work on skype?

I have gotten my microphone working, this was an issue for a long time.
Now I can hear myself through my headphones so I know the computer is "hearing" it.
But... I still show "No Input Devices Available" in my Pulse Audio volume control so I'm still not able to record... which of course is my whole point.

I'm trying to record a video with sound through FFmpeg, and while it records the system sounds just fine, it doesn't record the microphone (in fact, it crashes on doing so!). The strange thing is that if I use arecord, it works just perfectly, but through ffmpeg it crashes. This is the command that I use to launch FFmpeg:
Code:
/usr/bin/ffmpeg
-f x11grab

It's been almost two months since this problem started. I'm running 9.10, Karmic Koala, with all updates. I was hoping one of the updates would just fix this problem.
The microphone does not appear to work at all. It seems to exist because I have a choice for "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" under "sound preferences," but I don't know how else to check whether this is true. Sound Recorder does not record anything and Skype does not capture any sound from me.
how to run commands in the terminal and I consider myself an intermediate user, I just don't know anything about sound.

I can hear myself speak in the mic but Ubuntu is not recording/capturing the sound. Actions Taken: I followed all the steps listed here for the Alsa update script. I've also tried changing my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.config file with the following configurations one at a time.
[code]...
My capture settings are 'on' in alsamixer as in they are in red with the words CAPTURE underneath it.

Since the full info dump was a little bit too big to post here, I put the file in its entirety on Pastebin. I also noticed that KMix doesn't display any inputs/outputs...

I have a hda-intel soundcard which is working perfectly with alsa on Kubuntu 10.4. The only problem is the microphone.
Apparently I am not able to make it capture any sound or the sound is horrible:
- it works only in QArecord after I check the "Capture" checkbox.
-it doesn't work at all for Flash even if I Allow Flsh to use my mic
-it doesn't work at all for vmware player (I have a winxp guest os)
-in Skype for Linux it works only if I set Microphone boost to 100%, but the sound is too weak and distorted.
In alsa mixer I have enabled all 3 Capture sliders to 100%, the Mic is at 100%, Input sources are all 3 set up as Mic.
The microphone doesn't work at all for any application if I use FrontMic instead of Mic.
Being able to use the microphone in Skype and VMware player is very important to me and it's the only thing keeping me from using linux as my main OS.
Note: I have tried Slackware and I have the same issues there too.

When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:

i just upgraded from Skype 2.0.0.72 to 2.1.047. Now my microphone isn't working anymore and i cannot select it in the skype options. From now on i can only select the PulseAudio server ..
So i have read some howtos for PulseAudio. They say i should starte PulseAudio Volume Control. ok.. Now i should go to the tab "Recording". This tab doesnt exist on my pc. I upgraded to the latest version of this volume control. It still doesnt exist.
I am using OpenSuse 11.0 with KDE4.3
Here are some screenshots:

PS: My mic is still working with applications, that dont use pulseaudio.

I am really struggling to get my the internal microphone on my iMac to function. I was able to get the sound working by installing ALSA Mixer and appending the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file with [options snd-hda-intel model="imac24"]. Input is not muted. That file is attached.
My gnome-volume-control recognizes an 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' device, but it picks up no sound. Here's the chip information: Realtek ALC889A.

The mic on my laptop (lenovo g555, Ubuntu 11.04) doesn't work. No matter what application I'm using, it won't register. It worked just fine when I had windows installed. I've checked my sound preferences, and my input isn't muted, and no matter what volume I put the input at, it won't pick anything up.

I just installed Maverick on an Asus Seashell 1215T netbook with an AMD/ATI chipset. The sound output is working fine (with the exception that I have to manually set output to either speakers or headphones rather than just plugging in headphones), but neither the internal microphone nor external microphones plugged in through the mic jack work. I do have the sound device set to the internal sound (rather than HDMI) and the volume level set appropriately. Apparently neither microphone is being recognized. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Here is the relevant section from lspci -v:

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100 I am using 10.10 I am using headphone/microphone headset this did work for me with 10.04 never a problem, I have tried to use these to fix problem - audacity/sound recorder/pulse audio volume control/pulse audio device chooser/ (the more I use 10.10 the more I love it its been a learning curve I am sure this is just another one of them for me..)
Re: Microphone not working after upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick My hardware profile is Duplex. When I click on the input tab the signal measuring bar is always staying lit on the first section and does not move further. This means that the mic is not capturing sound. In 10.04.1 there was a dropdown menu in the input tab from which I could choose the default microphone and thus choose an option that works. In 10.10 there is no such thing. I kind of fixed it by adding "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" in alsa-base.conf. Now I have the dropdown menu and my microphone works for now. The problem is that I did not have to do this in 10.04.1 ... options snd-hda-intel model=3stack sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf for mine it was mic 1 and it worked

I am running Xubuntu Lucid 10.04 on a Sony Vaio. I recently dropped $100 on a Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac, on the recommendation on the ubuntu wiki [URL].. that it would "work perfectly" in Skype. In Skype, it did nothing. No Audio, no video, light wouldn't even come on. Essentially a $100 dollar paperweight. I really think someone should correct this misleading information on the wiki.
I followed the kludge listed here [URL].. to get the video to work. By executing Skype with the shell script listed in the first post, I could get the video test to work, but no audio, and when I tried to call someone, when I turned on video, Skype quit suddenly. For the record, yes, I unmuted the device in the Sound Mixer in the top right corner.
Later on, I tested it with guvcview, and the cam worked perfectly in that program. It's only Skype that doesn't know what to do with it. When I execute Skype in Terminal I get the following output repeating over and over again:
Code:
X Error, request 20, minor 0, error code 3 BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
X Error, request 15, minor 0, error code 3 BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on an Asus F3JC laptop with an integrated webcam and microphone. The webcam is a
Code:
user@ubuntu:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05e1:0501 Syntek Semiconductor Co., Ltd DC-1125 WebCam
and it works. If i tap on the microphone or if I blow on it, I hear noises but after I record something with gnome-sound-recorder I don't hear any sound! The same with Skype, for example.
On Xp (other hd partition) it works.
The audio device on the laptop is a
Code:
user@ubuntu:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC660 Analog [ALC660 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
[Code]....
If I open the "sound preferences tool" the device for sound input is "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" and even if I tune the volume of the microphone I don't see any movement in the input level bar. I've also checked alsamixer and the digital volum in the capture interface is set at the maximum.
