I am running a 64-bit version of lucid that I just upgraded the other day. At first everything was working fine, but after some upgrades (don't remember which ones) I get an oss4-dkms error and I have no audio.
I have tried a bunch of things that I found online, but nothing has seemed to work and at this time I am a little lost.
Following is some information:
I've tried to use Amarok and Rhythymbox, and neither one will play an Audio CD. Rhythymbox will play music files from an external hard drive, but won't play a CD.

I was trying to burn a .wav file to CD but Brasero ejects the media without burning anything after transcoding the wav file and creating an image. I'm attaching the error log to aid in debugging.I can burn data CDs fine. My burner, a Samsung SM-308B, can't burn DVDs so I don't know about burning them.

There is no playback of my music library using mplayer or vlc. There's no audio from Hulu or the TV network's direct sites. I've enabled pulse audio -- I found a reference to it in someone else's post. Medibuntu is loaded and the codecs downloaded.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI used to listen music and watch films with my with my laptop but, after an upgrade (to 10.04 lucid) it is impossible to hear any sounds. The sound card is detected and it works since making the laptop boot from live CD (of ubuntu 10.10) I get sounds without problems. I tried to reinstall alsa-base and alsa-utils with no results. Everything looks OK, but the sound! (It's not muted!)

I've upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 10.10 yesterday and I'm experiencing some issues now.
Audio is out of sync for all videos I'm trying to watch in VLC (sync was 100% fine in Ubuntu 10.04).
following chained updates of my music server from 10.04 to 11.04 I no longer have any sound, which is sort of bad for a music server...Primary soundcard in the setup is USB So I tried the command posted in various "no sound" threads
sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils linux-image-`uname -r` linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` libasound2
Which reinstalled stuff as expected, except had this error in the output: Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched "linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.38-8-generic" Could the error be because of backports?
aplay -l helpfully reports aplay: device_list:240: no soundcards found.

I just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid. I've never had problems with playing video files before, but now that I've upgraded to Lucid, I am, regardless of Compiz and other visual effects being on. What I know of my hardware specs are in my sig. I have "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended]" activated (and in fact, one of my reasons for upgrading was the supposedly improved NVIDIA drivers in Lucid). VLC, MPlayer and Totem are all choppy playing .avi's: they play smoothly for several seconds, then start skipping (audio and visual, separately), though VLC does so less violently than the others. Similar problems, though slightly less severe, with watching flash movies in chromium.

I've tried everything in the standard troubleshooting guide, the sticky threads and plenty of forum searches but so far I've come up with nada. For some reason Ubuntu refuses to see my soundcard, no matter how much I twist and tweak it. It's an Asus M3A78 motherboard with an on-board Realtek ALC1200 chip (snd-hda-intel). View 4 Replies View RelatedSo i upgraded to 10.04 a few months ago, right after it was released. clean install. it worked perfectly out of the box, or so it seemed. I had had sound problems in 9.10 that i didn't experience after i upgraded... until i tried to use some headphones a few days ago. when i connected the headphones, the speakers wouldn't mute. i thought it was no big deal. i had the same issue in 9.10 and it was fixed after i upgraded alsa. i figured i'd try the same thing. I used the same alsa upgrade script i used last time [URL] and it fixed the jack sensing and the sound worked perfectly... for about 5 minutes. after a short while of playing audio, sound would stop playing. i'd stop getting sound from video files, audio files, and even from my browser. i'd have to reboot to get sound again... only to lose it again in about 10 minutes. Now it's regressed to the point where i have no sound even after i reboot.
weird thing is, when i test out an audio file with aplay, it works... even if i just get garbage sound from some mp3 files.

I can't get sound to work and am not sure how to trouble shoot. The sound DOES work when first booting, and I can make it play a test beep with the sound config app. But I cannot get sound from any other application. One possibly relevant fact is that I see a lot of I/O errors early in the boot process, but they flash by quickly so I cannot quote them.

I've never had a problem with streaming from my favorite radio stations until I upgraded to Natty. If I know the IP and use Audacious or another client, I can still stream through them-- but not from my browser any more. Flash-based content works OK too.I have upgraded two computers from 10.10 to Natty (desktop and laptop) and it has happened with both. the desktop is the 64-bit system (AMD), and the laptop runs the 32-bit OS (Intel). We have two other computers still running 10.10, and they're both still OK. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the xine plugin (which seems to do most of the streaming), VLC, and a couple of others. No luck. I don't think I see any gaps between the codecs installed for the 10.10 computers and the ones running Natty.I tried Chrome -- same result.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen Karmic came along, I upgraded and it was possible for the first time to get a dual monitor display working using only the GUI apps supplied. (I think I used screen resolution) It worked out of the box and took no time whatsoever.
I had a dual monitor set up working with 2 1024 x 768 monitors, with a desktop spanning both, and a background picture doing the same.
The Lucid update has just spectacularly broken this, along with a large number of desktop type changes that were unwanted.
The version of Ubuntu was the usual vanilla, but with enough K stuff installed to make K3b work. The card is a Radeon 9250SE.
Give up and re-install Karmic? Wait for some sort of upgrade to allow either Monitors or Multiple Screens to work - the option to remove cloning is greyed out in one and unticking clone in the other does nothing? Try some other distro?
Does anyone know of a decision to remove any functionality from Lucid that existed in Karmic? Is there any useful background to this that is perhaps not obvious?
Upgraded via Update Manager from 9.10 sound-previously-working-just-fine-system. Now, for example, running any audio-producing app (Rythmbox is a good example but its the same for anything including out of a VirtualBox XP install or with MythBuntu): The main volume control functions, but goes from muted to full volume in just 4 steps; raising it higher has no effect. It gets stranger: in Alsamixer or gnome-alsa-mixer I can see that lowering the desktop volume control to mute causes Master, PCM, Front, Surround, Center, LFE, and Side all to go to zero. Raising the desktop control one step causes all of these but Front to go to 100% instantly. Increasing the desktop control by a few more steps causes Front to step to 100%, after which no further volume increase is perceived. It's as if each step in the desktop volume equals some 25% of the Front setting, and 100% of the others. The audio setting in System, Preferences, Sound, Hardware is "Analog Stereo Output."
If I click 'Mute' on Master in the mixer then all the speakers mute, but unmuting Master does not unmute anything else. Only after I move and release the mouse-down state from the master volume do the other channels unmute. The volume control in Rythmbox, on the other hand, works seemingly correctly (maybe its going thru Pulseaudio?) And as an aside, why are there no controls for Pulse if it sits on top of ALSA?
I'm really confused by this, as all of it work as "expected" while running 9.10. Here is some output from this system (an ASUS M4A78T-E):

Applied the Lucid Lynx 10.04 over the weekend.
Since then - I am unable to burn DVDs, although I can successfully read DVD's.
Everything worked fine before the upgrade.
Under Lucid Lynx I am able to burn CD's (both data files and .ISO) so it isn't the hardware.
I have tried Brasero and k3b as burners - they issue messages that the burner doesn't like the medium, which is standard DVD-R.
Bear in mind that I could burn similar DVDs *before* the upgrade...
Any help or suggestions on how to fix this please?
Summary: a long-working config involving a 1st-generation Ipod Touch with v1 firmware, Ubuntu, and Amarok 1.4 stopped working when I upgraded to Lucid.
A few years ago I was given a 1st-generation Ipod Touch, running the original v1 firmware (I never upgraded to the v2 firmware because v2 wasn't jailbroken at the time). I took it to a friend's place to activate and jailbreak it with her Mac laptop (I didn't have a Mac or Windows machine to install Itunes on; have been Linux-only for many years). Once jailbroken, I was happily able to use it with Hardy, Amarok 1.4, and ipod-convenience (which supply ipod-touch-mount/ipod-touch-umount).
This continued through upgrades to Intrepid and Jaunty. I didn't care for Amarok 2 in Jaunty, so I installed Amarok 1.4 from the ppa someone else made available. I continued to use it through Jaunty and Karmic, without any problems.
Last week I upgraded to Lucid. Syncing Amarok 1.4 to the Ipod Touch no longer appears to work; the Ipod fails to recognize any music transferred onto it (standard "No Music - you can buy music at Itunes" error screen), so I presume this is a libgpod/hash error. I have the FirewireGuid properly set in the .../Device/SysInfo file, as I always have.
Every time I use the Amarok Ipod "connect" function (which runs ipod-touch-mount) it tells me no valid Itunes db was found, and asks to initialize the db. I can then transfer music to the Ipod, and successfully disconnect, but it's not recognized on the Ipod after a respring or reboot.
I've tried RhythmBox and gtkpod briefly with no luck either.

Edit: a little more info: after I let Amarok initialize the Ipod Touch and transfer a song to it, the iTunes.db that gets created on the Ipod is 0 bytes long. I presume this is the source of the problem, and indicates something is going wrong with libgpod's creation/editing of the db.
what I should do from here? I've tried removing the DB by hand, but it makes no difference - the subsequent operation to initialize the db results in the same 0-byte file.

[URL] To uninstall oss4 open a terminal and su to root then type. To put pulseaudio back type yum install pulseaudioback to normal... add all the pulseaudio apps that were removed if you desire.
I had quite a bit of trouble getting OSS4.2 and flash to have sound on x86_64 fedora 11. I had been using the Adobe repository which is 32bit. Adobe labs distributes a 64 bit version, and I notice now that Leigh has packaged it for fedora. Switching to the 64bit flash plugin brought back sound in flash for me. Just wanted anyone else wanting to try OSS4.2, to know how to get sound in flash.

I have reinstalled wine but nothing has happened but i am at a loss of what to do with the sound. It used to work with no extra configuration before the upgrade i am running a dell inspiron 530.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI preface this by saying that all other forms of CDs and DVDs work perfectly in this machine - the problem relates exclusively to Audio CDs, either burnt or bought.
When I put and Audio CD in the drive, the mounting process starts, takes longer than usual, and during this process, the desktop icons flash off then back on again, then the CD mounts and I get an icon on the desktop.
If I right-click and select Open, the desktop icons flash off and on again, and nothing else happens.
If I right-click and select Open with Rhythmbox, the same thing happens - desktop icons flash off and on, and nothing else happens. Rhthymbox is not listed in the active processes either.
If I open Movie Player, and click on Movie in the menu, the Play disc 'Audio disc' option is greyed out.
If Rhythmbox is running, and I insert an Audio CD in the drive, Rhythmbox crashes and won't start again until I remove the Audio CD, then all is well again.
When I select Eject to remove the Audio CD, the desktop icons flash off and on again, then the CD ejects.
All audio and sounds work just fine until I close my laptop's lid for a spell and reopen. On resume, there is simply no sound at all. It's all fixed when I restart, but being a laptop, I like being able to close the lid and come back to it every now and then.
I believe it's an issue from when Ubuntu changed their audio in the transition between Jaunty and Karmic, and it never got fixed. FYI, it worked just fine in Jaunty.
From past postings and research, it seems to be a lack of something 'waking up' or restarting when the lid opens. However, it's not 'alsa restart' or 'pulseaudio restart' or whatever. It's one little bug that keeps me from having sound without a restart.
In 10.04 lucid my SONY CRX 140E drive reads data CDs but does not even read and audio CDs. This was not the case in Hardy and I dual boot and just checked in Windows and audio CDs are no problem there.
