Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Play Audio CDs In Kubuntu Lucid
May 3, 2010I've tried to use Amarok and Rhythymbox, and neither one will play an Audio CD. Rhythymbox will play music files from an external hard drive, but won't play a CD.
View 1 RepliesI've tried to use Amarok and Rhythymbox, and neither one will play an Audio CD. Rhythymbox will play music files from an external hard drive, but won't play a CD.
View 1 RepliesI preface this by saying that all other forms of CDs and DVDs work perfectly in this machine - the problem relates exclusively to Audio CDs, either burnt or bought.
When I put and Audio CD in the drive, the mounting process starts, takes longer than usual, and during this process, the desktop icons flash off then back on again, then the CD mounts and I get an icon on the desktop.
If I right-click and select Open, the desktop icons flash off and on again, and nothing else happens.
If I right-click and select Open with Rhythmbox, the same thing happens - desktop icons flash off and on, and nothing else happens. Rhthymbox is not listed in the active processes either.
If I open Movie Player, and click on Movie in the menu, the Play disc 'Audio disc' option is greyed out.
If Rhythmbox is running, and I insert an Audio CD in the drive, Rhythmbox crashes and won't start again until I remove the Audio CD, then all is well again.
When I select Eject to remove the Audio CD, the desktop icons flash off and on again, then the CD ejects.
In 10.04 lucid my SONY CRX 140E drive reads data CDs but does not even read and audio CDs. This was not the case in Hardy and I dual boot and just checked in Windows and audio CDs are no problem there.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI want to listen to this audio file: [URL] but my real player 11.0.0.4028 gold desn play it, it says that there is a codec 28_8 missing, I go to relaplayer page, download the last release available for linux systems, but the message is the same : audio codec missing and doesn't play the audio.
I havev tried to play the audio with smplayer (not luck), vlc can play the audio but the pause button doesn't work so I have to listen the entire audio all the time I stop it playing. Is there any audio player capable od reproducing in the proper way this audio in ubuntu? No one of my video players totem, smplayer, realplayer or vlc are capable of playing this video: [URL]
to start off, i'll post the specs of the machine:
dell inspiron e1505
3.2 gb ram
1.86 ghz intel core duo
ati x1400 gfx
opensuse 11.4 kde 32 bit.
okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.
i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.
how I can use in my Kubuntu 9.10, audio codec - <voxware metasound audio codec>? P.S. Sorry for my bad english. I look forward to an answer,

Strangely, spdif is working great, but I need analog to work, too. I've been in alsamixer, nothing is muted. That's the extent of my troubleshooting knowledge for sound issues.

To get multimedia working, or explain what I'm doing wrong.
The problem is that none of the video players doesn't play video, they show only black window and play audio.
I have Fedora 11 Leonidas, fully up-to-date.
I have installed rpmfusion and livna repository.
I have installed following packages:
When I try to play video with totem, it doesn't output any error, but just doesn't play video.
with mplayer:
xine and kaffeine just say:
vlc:
I tried several different files, which works perfectly in windows and ubuntu.
I installed windows binary codecs for mplayer to /usr/lib/codec/
I am having trouble running audio cd's in my second ubuntu 9.10 machine. However normal cd's run in the drive and I have tested the cd's on my first machine.
Under computer the cd drive icon disappears.
For some reason in Ubuntu 9.10 my DVD burner will not mount with an audio CD in it (as in, it won't read any audio CDs). I have been able to run DVDs, data discs, and even burnt a few discs - it just will not read an audio CD.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was having a terrible time playing some WMV files and I finally got it working this way:
Based on this: [URL]
Step 1 Add the Medibuntu repositories to sources
Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
by adding this at the bottom of the file then saving
Code:
#medibuntu repositories
deb [URL] lucid free non-free
Step 2 Update for that change to take effect
Code:
sudo apt-get update
Step 3 Install the w32codecs [you won't find it if Medibuntu repositories are not in place]
Code:
sudo apt-get install w32codecs
Step 4 Install Kplayer [so far the only player I can get to work for WMV files]
Code:
sudo apt-get install kplayer
I have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.
The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.
Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default
The only one that works is hw:0,2.
But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:
Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)
Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?
All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.
I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.
hi, I'm having a massive problem getting my audio CD's to play since upgrading to 10.04.Whenever I try them I get the following message:Unable to mount disc: Location is not mountableWhen I check the System Log/messages I see the following repeated over and over...

What program can i download & install to play my MP3 Audio files & my MP4 Video files in Ubuntu 10.10?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs it at all fathomable to play .qcp files on Ubuntu 11.04? I REALLY want to... I recorded this totally amazing trumpet player, and I need to play this audio to learn more.
"There is no application installed for RIFF audio files." Is what I get when I double click it.
WAIT! VLC does it! OMG YAY! With skips in the audio How can I convert to mp3
Download this: [URL]
It converts any mobile file to a file of your choice, it worked PERFECTLY for my .qcp file, converted it from qcp to mp3 with no problem, no skips, full file.
I just installed 10.04 and am pleased w/ things, for the most part.
However, I cannot get a DVD disc to play (a movie, for instance) or be recognized unless I shut down the system and restart (provided I have already launched a Web video, or something). The DVD-ROM is dead to the world as far as disc recognition goes.
Things were just great in Karmic so this is completely confusing to me.
Does anyone have a fix?
just updated to lucid and i went to install medibuntu and following the instructions on this page [URL] just like i did in Karmic but after i have done everything that i had to do in Karmic to get it to work i tried to play a dvd in totem and it pops up and says
The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable plugins to play media files. Do you want to search for a plugin that supports the selected file?
The search will also include software which is not officially supported.
No packages with the requested plugins found
The requested plugins are: DVD subpicture decoder
I click ok and then the dvd starts to play and says internal data flow error
I am a longtime Fedora user. Moved over to OpenSUSE 11.2 after Fedora 13 won't install on my old hardware. I am unable to play DVD or Audio CD using VLC. I have OpenSUSE 11.2 with Gnome desktop installed.
After a fresh install, I followed the steps in this FAQ:
Code:

Thereafter I tried to do RedDwarf's 10 point multimedia check. But it seems like #5 doesn't return results as expected and #6 fails for some packages.

last night Listen would crash with a seg fault whenever I tried to play something, but now instead i'm getting this.
Most of the BT stuff I see involves connecting a headset to the PC...I'm not seeing much for what I want to do. I have a motorola Droid, and it's pairing via bluetooth to my thinkpad just fine. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64bit.What I want to do is pair the PC to my phone and have the PC act as the headset, i.e., the audio from my phone comes out my PC speakers. Ultimately I'm trying to record audio from my phone, voicemails from Verizon that I'd like to save to audio files. A couple years ago I was able to do something like this with a Thinkpad in WinXP, and record audio using Audacity. I'm not seeing how to make the PC work as a headset.

Play with Kaffeine results in it opening, but then nothing happens. When I do the same thing with the CD in the bottom drive, it plays the first track of the CD but nothing else. Every time. With different CDs.

how to get the same kind of result in smplayer or xine or VLC? For info, playback is fine through headphones - no channel imbalance.
For some reason, I seem to be getting audio glitches or hick ups when I play my mp3s on Ubuntu 10.10. Everything else works fine. Would this be a hardware or software issue?

View 5 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded 4 machines from Karmic to Lucid. 2 of them I used synaptic to install ubuntu-restricted-extras and two I used apt-get from command line. The synaptics will not play a DVD iso in totem while the two from the command line will just fine. If I install VLC on the two that don't work, it plays the iso just fine.
I have purged libdvdread4 and reinstalled with no luck. It offends my sense of perfectness that two machines that used to run dvd iso's fine no longer do.
I did read a blog post somewhere that ubuntu-restricted-extras installed via synaptic does not get everything.
My girlfriend is running Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid Lynx on her laptop. She keeps bitching at me to get it to play ..... videos. She has the restricted software package installed. But Adobe Flash 10 says it wont install on amd64?I just need clear instructions on how she can watch videos so I don't have to listen to her anymore!

Either it does not load, or once in awhile it also shows a message saying something like "cd player not configured", - which is odd because Suse is able to use it for installing additional programs and such from the Suse Dvd. I am also quite new in this, my first Opensuse distribution is the current.
