I am setting up a mythtv/xmbc box on Ubuntu 10.10 (natty does not install on my hardware). I have a Sabrent TV PCIRC tuner card, which seems to work fine with the proper card and tuner settings. My on-board sound is HDA-Intel surround sound, which I have configured as analog duplex.
Currently the sound works fine through my speakers plugged into any jack on the back of the PC (two speakers, one jack). I can watch ripped movies and listen to music. The TV tuner is pumping sound from its external jack -- if I hook it up directly to the speakers it works fine. I can feed the Tuner's sound to the line-in on my motherboard, but nothing comes out. In the sound manager, i have the input device selected and the input level shows that the sound is coming in through the connector, and I can test the speakers and they work fine, but they don't seem to be communicating that the sound coming in needs to be pumped out through the speakers.

I did, what one should not do: I changed a running system. I removed a PCI sound card, replaced a damaged DVD+RW drive and upgraded to Slackware-current (Slackware 13.37 RC-3). The mainboard is an MSI KT4V with VIA8235 onboard sound. Now, my problem is a bit weird: Everything seems to work just fine. E. g., programs like speaker-test, play and aplay show no error message. In fact, they seem to be able to play sound. E.
Code:
play /usr/share/sounds/pop.wav gives no error message. But: I don't get any sound out of my speakers. Here is some additional information. I'd be really grateful, if someone could point me to relevant information or useful advise, what this problem could be caused by.

I use 64-bit Ubuntu Lucid. This machine has an onboard Nvidia sound chip (which can not be disabled in BIOS), I also have an Soundblaster Audigy 2 card, which i'd rather use.
Previously, this was impossible because Ubuntu could only configure the first card. However, with the event of 10.4 and the easy-to-use selector in Sound Preferences I was hopeful that it would work now. But no luck.
I should mention that this machine dual boots to Win XP, and the Audigy works like a charm there, so it must be a Ubuntu problem. The Audigy 2 card is detected by Ubuntu, and is selectable in Sound Preferences, playback is fine with no errors, the source appears in Sound Preferences, but no sound.
These are the steps I have tried, without success:
- Disable the on-board card in Sound Preferences
- Cranking all the sliders to max in Alsamixer
- Checking that there's no mute in Alsamixer, Sound Preferences, Volume Control
- Adding lines to the bottom of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base making the Audigy the default card (0), and the Nvidia secondary (1). The output of

Over the last few days I've been spending some time converting my headless web server into a media center running Boxee for our lounge.
I have managed to get *nearly* everything working with the exception of sound. The computer has onboard sound, both front and back ports, and I tried every combination of outputs and plugs.
I also checked it wasn't muted, or anything like that.
So, I wasn't able to get it working with the stock Ubuntu 10.10 stuff - I turned to Google and found a thread which suggested I download and install this.
I ran the ./install as root, and it took about 3 minutes to install everything. Rebooted and now I'm left worse off than before - this time I actually have no sound card even listed.
I've been thinking some more, and after another hour or two reading through random threads, I think it may have been a mistake to install those drivers.
I couldn't find a way to uninstall them, so I've been reinstalling all the alsa and PulseAudio packages I can find with no luck.
Now I'm stuck with doubly no-sound.
If I can't get onboard working then I'm considering buying a new graphics card with HDMI out (the current one has a hard time with Boxee), or maybe a dedicated sound card instead.

I have the MCP55 HD Audio on board. Is there a way to configure the mic to mono, 16 bit with 16000Hz sampling as a system input. The signal will be read by the installed program pocketsphinx_continuous.
This is not to make recordings. I can make these settings in KRecord/KDE3. This is for the system input. The mic works with the program and KRecord.
Or must a compatible sound card be installed?

I just built a computer and the onboard nic pluggin is loose and won't register or connect right... so I had to put another nic card in pci to connect to wired network for internet. Problem now is its delaying something fierce... i'm thinking if i can manage to uninstall or disable the onboard nic maybe things would work better... problem is i wouldn't know how to do it... I know hardware is connected via a document somewhere in the file system... if I were to delete the file would that disable the nic or would it just reinstall itself on the next boot?

Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

This is my first attempt switching to Ubuntu from Windows, and I am having some trouble getting the on-board ethernet to work in Ubuntu 9.1. I have a MSI KM2M Combo-L VIA KM266 and VT8235 Chipset which uses the Rhine II chipset. I am trying to use the onboard ethernet, however it does not connect to the network after installing Ubuntu, although the driver appears to have been automatically installed. I also tried this with several other network cards (Intel, Dlink, Netgear) with various chipsets, but none seem to work.
Our network Netgear switch/router has DCHP enabled, and all of the Windows computers connect just fine. This is true even when we plug another computer into the ethernet cable serving the Ubuntu computer. When I manually configure the IP address, it shows the network connection as connected, but it is unable to ping and/or connect to the internet (except for localhost and the assigned IP address). I used 192.168.11 as the IP, 255.255.255.0 as the netmask, and 192.168.1.1 as the gateway. Below are several commands, that I've run to provide some additional information (using auto eth1).

I'm new to Linux and have spent a few weeks tracking down and fixing a few problems.t the moment I've exhausted my ideas as to why I have no S/PDIF output, I'm trying to use the onboard audio from my motherboard. I get sound from the analog output to my computer speakers, but when I connect the coaxial S/PDIF output to my amplifier I get no sound. tried removing and reinstalling ALSA, muting and unmuting outputs in ALSA, checked my amplifier settings and inputs, and probably a few other things I've forgotten. I also tried to follow the troubleshooting and howto guides to the best of my abilityHere's a list of what I have:OS: Ubuntu 10.04LTS

I've been using Ubuntu for several months now. The sound was working just fine until now. I installed an update I put off that came 9/20/10. I restarted and my sound no longer works. The speakers built into the laptop doesn't work nor do the headphones. I tried going to the preferences to fix it, but my sound card info wasn't there anymore. Dummy Output was in my Output. I've been searching frantically for a solution but found none. I think my driver has been uninstalled some how but I'm not sure. I use the laptop for multimedia purposes, so please respond as soon as possible. I would GREATLY appreciate it. I have Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer Aspire 5532 laptop.

I installed ubuntu 10.10 a couple weeks ago onto a brand new drive in this old AMD XP3200 system on a soyo motherboard with a VIA 8237. I had sound originally. I notice 2 of my channels on this 5.1 system weren't working. So I came to this thread and tried some of the solutions there. One of them, I think "update", "upgrade" and uninstall, reinstall alsa caused me to lose sound completely, the speaker icon on the top panel disappeared at the same time and cannot be recovered through panel preferences.
Through following some suggestions I found on various threads, It seems ubuntu sees my correct card, has the correct driver installed, I have my user prefs set up to use sound, I don't have anything muted anywhere that I can tell, yet no sound, not even the familiar click of the speakers when booting up. Any suggestions short of reloading from scratch?I do get some errors on some searches, but not really sure what they mean or it they affect anything like the one below:
Code:

My sound is working, though the problem is a bit difficult to describe. The sound seems to be off, not playing certain particular frequencies. I have gotten the sound to work on Windows, so I do not believe it is a hardware problem.
I do not understand the KDE sound system well enough to know where to start. I have tried removing PulseAudio to use ALSA, but the problem still seems to be there. I believe I picked the correct driver for ALSA, also with no effect. I tried Xine instead of GStreamer

I'm looking at upgrading my motherboard and graphics card. Ideally, I'd like to have 2 monitors running at once (DVI), and an output to an LCD projector (HDMI). If I can't have all 3 working at once, I'd like the 2 monitors on all the time (off the graphics card), and then switch from the monitors to the HDMI output so that only the projector is getting video.
So, If I get a motherboard with onboard HDMI, would it be possible to run the HDMI out at the same time as the graphics card output?

I recently noticed that when I boot up ubuntu it no longer plays the cool startup music. I think it may have something to do with me removing these packages in synaptic package manager because they were interferring with my sound in total annihilation for spring. Most of the packages below were reinstalled because my sound icon disappeared and I had to reinstall them. But are any one of these packages responsible for the ubuntu boot up sound?
