Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dvd Drive Doesn't Play Store Bought But Does Play My Copies Of Them
Mar 10, 2010
After many days of trying to tweak Ubuntu 9.10 desktop i386. This subject will focus on my dvd drive. ...Here is what I have done, but I'm not sure what I did or still need to do, or to do different. ...
Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.
When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.
I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.
I came across the Medibuntu site: [url]
Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)
Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)
Whenever I plug my Zune in, Rhythmbox recognizes all the songs on it but when I doubleclick on a song to play it, the song doesn't play and Rhythmbox quits. Any suggestions on how to fix it? I'm running a Dell XPS 410 with 4GB RAM and a 1.75 GHz processor. Also, I imported a CD and it plays fine.
i just installed 10.10 on my girls laptop (Acer Aspire 5735z) hoping it would fix the old problem i had with playing real dvd's. it didnt. it keeps saying "Could not read from Resource". when i try with VLC is say "Could not read from file". but if i put in a burned movie, it plays fine. i checked and it has libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 installed. i get the same problems with my laptop (toshiba portege m400 tablet) which runs fedora 13.
In 10.04 lucid my SONY CRX 140E drive reads data CDs but does not even read and audio CDs. This was not the case in Hardy and I dual boot and just checked in Windows and audio CDs are no problem there.
Anyone else struggling to play iplayer video? I've got the proprietary Flash plugin, which means it's probably not this "SWF Authentication" thing that there's been so much talk about.
I've rebooted, tried all sorts of tinkering, it loads the applet (I can see that Flash is loading OK because other things work, and right clicking on the applet gives the Flash menu)
I need to play or preferably convert (i.e. to MP3) old SNG files, which contain voice records. From what I could find, it's basically a MIDI created by synthetiser. I think it was recorded by some ancient VLC player. I failed so far to play it on anything I could download.
I have installed Amarok on clean Ubuntu 9.10 and when I tried to play some mp3 files it just skip them all and finish the play list. I don't know how to fix this, maybe I need something to be installed. On other programs the files works fine. I have some Intel efault sound card.
i tried to play any kind of video, it doesn't matter what it is and when i double click it to play, the program acts like it's loading it and then disappears. it doesn't matter what program it is, it does the same thing. i'm using ubuntu 9.10. is their anything i can do about that?
I recently installed Ubuntu and am new to linux, i have tried many types of media players and still have an error that says it can not read the material. Is there anything I can do, I have tried VLC Xine and others.
ready some 3gp files so had to install the w32codecs and mplayer version from the medibuntu repository. Now I can play back these files perfectly with mplayer from teh command line but when I open them with smplayer there is no video, just (choppy) sound. Xine also plays them back now although it didn't before. I know the first time I ran smplayer on this installation I had to choose which version of mplayer it was running with but don't know if I can do this again to tell it to use the installed medibuntu mplayer. I'm at a bit of a loss as to why the front-end smplayer would not simply play files with the exact same results as mplayer from the CLI. I haven't rebooted since,
How can I get mplayer to play files over the network? It seems like I am not the only one that wants this feature. Does anyone got a work around for this?
When I used Hulu Desktop on my old integrated VGA video output, it played fairly well. Now I got a new video card and connected my monitor and installed the latest drivers and it doesn't play as well, it buffers and I don't know how to explain the rest.
I run lucid. I already have installed Medibuntu and the package libdvdcss2. Nevertheless, I still can't get DragonPlayer to play a DVD properly. Indeed, Dragon starts to play the DVD. However, the image is distorted and you can't recognize anything... This is what the terminal messages say when I start Dragon over the terminal:
Code: norma@norma:~$ dragon --play-dvd /media/cdrom0/ dragonplayer(2265)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "aspect_ratio_menu" with KXMLGUIFactory! dragonplayer(2265)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "audio_channels_menu" with KXMLGUIFactory! dragonplayer(2265)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "subtitle_channels_menu" with KXMLGUIFactory! libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 1.1.17 from http://xine.sf.net
i installed ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop pc. I previously used 8.10 without any problems. Now I have a problem with amarok. I can't play any music at all. i tried to find what the problem was but i don't seem to succeed so far.
is there a way to make it work with .ape files? i try to open ape files and it will open instead a prompt window in songbird asking which program to open the file with.
I installed the adobe plugin, and my browser crashes. I uninstalled it, and installed the one in the apt repository (mozilla-plugin-gnash) and it shows up in my about: plugins in iceweasel, but flash just doesn't play.
Amarok just skips all songs one by one. It starts playing and ends song immediately and goes to next song.I ran Amarok in konsole..[URL].. I tried different audio files (mp3, wav...) but the same every time.
I see that whenever I try and run a video, the system defaults to try and run it in Banshee.Banshee, though, sits there with a black screen and the information on what it is supposed to be playing. Clicking the Play button does nothing. This includes OGG (OGV?) video files.Does anybody use this feature in Banshee and got it to work?
I just upgraded (full reinstall inc. format) from 11.1 (32bit) to 11.3 (64bit).
Everything is working correctly except gmplayer (installed from packman).
If I play movies using gmplayer they do not play smoothly, but the strange thing is if I play the same file with mplayer from a terminal it does play smoothly.
If I play the file from a terminal with gmplayer no errors are reported...
I was wondering if you could help me out with this Flash problem: sometimes, Flash elements don't play in my browser window - there's just a big white area where my Flash should be. I have to close and re-open Firefox. This especially happens when I activate the "Flashblock" plugin, a very useful tool that blocks all Flash unless you click on it and choose to play it. Whenever I have that enabled, most of the time, clicking on the "play" button produces the white area where the Flash object should be. It's Karmic 64 and Firefox 3.5, Shockwave Flash 10.0.
I have a PC running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I have about 50GB of music in the Music library. I can connect from, play to, and download music to my DLNA enabled phone (Samsung Galaxy S), everything works fine.
When I start Rhythmbox on my laptop (Ubuntu 10.10), it sees my PC (appears under "Shared" in the left panel), but the tracks won't show on the list, it seems as if it fails to retreive the list of media. No matter how long I wait, nothing happens, the tracklist remains empty forever.
I have installed the "coherence" plugin from the Software Center.
I'll attach the console output rhythmbox generates when starting up,
Sidenote: it works the other way around, I can "Play to..." Rhythmbox from Windows Media Player.
Code: andras@ANDRAS-LAPTOP:~$ rhythmbox (rhythmbox:1979): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed ** Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GstObject) WARN coherence Dec 13 17:04:36 Coherence UPnP framework version 0.6.6.2 starting... I am using Suse 11.4, with the Gnome desktop. I have downloaded the VLC player, but cannot work out how to make it play CDs in the CD drive. Right clicking on the Audio Disc icon that appears on the desktop whenever I load a disc doesn't give me an option to Play using VLC. Is there a way to make VLC the default player for CDs?
I have mentioned this in another thread elsewhere but perhaps this is a better location. In Opensuse 11.3 I was able to play files on my NAS drive from within smplayer over samba shares or ftp. I would simply use dolphin to browse to the file on the nas drive (either through samba or ftp protocol), double click the .avi file and it would load smplayer and begin playing immediately.
In 11.4 I have samba set up using the same smb.conf file However, if I double click the .avi file it copies the entire contents to the local computer before launching smplayer. If I use smplayer's file selector and navigate to the file on the samba share I get the message "you can only select local files" This is a different behaviour to that from 11.3 However, using the ftp protocol from within dolphin smplayer launches immediately and begins playing. smplayer is launched using the shortcut command
Code: smplayer %U Does anybody have any suggestions on a workaround or how to correct? Using kaffeine I have no problems. Double click the file on the nas drive and kaffeine launches immediately and begins playing.
I downloaded the xvid codec from: PackMan:: Informationen zum Paket xvidcore, and the install was successful.I'm trying to play an xvid file, and Kaffeine is saying it cannot play all file formats, would I like to install additional support. When I click yes, it asks me for additional repositories.
I had my mother purchase an album on the Ubuntu One Music Store in 10.10 for me, since it was kind of a gift from last Christmas. It downloaded fine (albeit with a browse to my Ubuntu One storage account from FF), and it synced fine, but when I go to play any of the songs on my iPod Nano 3G, the progress bar that shows how finished the song is while playing is stuck at 0:00. Anybody know what the problem is?
