Aug 11, 2010I need to play or preferably convert (i.e. to MP3) old SNG files, which contain voice records. From what I could find, it's basically a MIDI created by synthetiser. I think it was recorded by some ancient VLC player. I failed so far to play it on anything I could download.

Dec 30, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with the Kubuntu desktop environment. I'm trying to use my MIDI keyboard through ALSA, Linuxsampler and Qsampler. But I still haven't got a sound out of it, and I fear that the information about the existence of the keyboard doesn't get through. That, or I don't know how to configure properly.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: MIDI - Players Don't Play Or Crash
Feb 20, 2010I have a problem playing MIDI files on my system: I tried opening two MIDI files in Audacious, VLC, Aqualung and Rhythmbox, and Rhythmbox is the only one that will play them:
- Audacious crashes when clicking on the file in the playlist (immediately disappears)
- Aqualung doesn't add them to its playlist
- VLC produces an error msg saying it can't play MIDI
- Rhythmbox plays a MIDI file and immediately crashes at its end
I'm on Ubuntu Karmic 64 and have timidity installed.

The only problem I still have now is that I can not play midi files on my piano through Ubuntu. to play my midi files on the piano. In ubuntu 9.1 I can play the midi but only through the laptop. It does not get sent to the piano. I'm new to Linux but can follow direction. Hate to be going back to windows. Installing Van Basco through wine keeps crashing and does not work.

Is there anything similar in linux? everything up? I followed different instructions on how to setup Jack to make it work and it can see the keyboard but I wasn't able to get any sound out of it.My computer has the Asus built-in sound card and I also have a separate M-audio Audiophile 192 sound card.

As I have Windows XP in a computer and Windows 7 in another, I have to convert the midi files into wave files in order to listen to them in Slackware using play. There is another thing that I haven't ever been able to do in spite of the fact that I have had Slackware installed in my computers since 2002, and this thing is: I have never been able to connect Internet using Slackware or any other Linux distribuition. Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.
When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.
I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.

Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)
Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)

Oct 15, 2010i just installed 10.10 on my girls laptop (Acer Aspire 5735z) hoping it would fix the old problem i had with playing real dvd's. it didnt. it keeps saying "Could not read from Resource". when i try with VLC is say "Could not read from file". but if i put in a burned movie, it plays fine. i checked and it has libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 installed. i get the same problems with my laptop (toshiba portege m400 tablet) which runs fedora 13.

Feb 28, 2010Anyone else struggling to play iplayer video? I've got the proprietary Flash plugin, which means it's probably not this "SWF Authentication" thing that there's been so much talk about.
I've rebooted, tried all sorts of tinkering, it loads the applet (I can see that Flash is loading OK because other things work, and right clicking on the applet gives the Flash menu)
However, clicking the play button does nothing.

Mar 13, 2011I currently have mplayer installed with the binary codecs in place, but it seems that mplayer is quite picky with which files it wants to play.
I have three files that are all mp4 h264 .mkv's. One of them is ~20 minutes long (720p) and mplayer seems to do just fine. Another is around ~90 minutes (1080p) and within seconds the audio gets out of sync. The third file is also around ~90 minutes long (1080p) and refuses to play at all, throwing a mess of:

Error while decoding frame!
The machine is fairly old (Athlon 64 X2 4200+), but I don't think it's a hardware performance issue. When it was running Windows XP it could handle any HD video I threw at it. Each one of these files plays perfectly on my Windows machine with Media Player Classic Home Cinema + ffmpeg...
Is there something wrong with ffmpeg or is support for h264 just not there yet?

Aug 2, 2010I'm experiencing a sudden black flash before video play back with VLC. The whole 3 screens just flash black and come back, and then the video plays fine in VLC. This doesn't happen with other media players, such as mPlayer and Totem.
I'm running an XFX Radeon 5450 (ATi) with the propriety 10.7 drivers. Running 3 17" (1280x1024) in "EyeFinity". I've had a look on the unofficial bug thingy for ati drivers for linux, and there is a bug back from 2008.[URL]...
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas, of tips to start looking to try and solve my little issue, I've spent hours and hours looking though xorg, syslog and other logs in /var/log/ and nothing seems to stand out.

Aug 13, 2010I'm trying to record video off my webcam, and tried two different programs - cheese and wxcam.
I honestly didn't have much luck with cheese - it seemed to work fine, but when it came time to record video, the frame rate dropped to a ridiculous level, making the video completely unusable. I could wave my arm in front of the camera, and it might pick up one frame of that.
Moving on, I tried wxcam, which I like a lot.. however, when I record video with the xvid compression, they play back considerably faster than they were recorded.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Totem Won't Play Back Video/ts File From DLNA Server
Jul 21, 2011I'm having trouble playing back videos from a DLNA device in Ubuntu 11.04, and I'm not sure where the problem lies.
Using the software manager I've installed the extra plugins package for Totem, and enabled the Coherence DLNA/UPNP plugin. I can see the device (Humax Freeview HD recorder) in the MediaServers list, and can browse through the programmes I've recorded on it. However, trying to play any of the has no effect, the main part of the window still shows the "clapperboard" graphic.
I noticed that the "recent files" filenames that were appearing on the Movie menu didn't match the ones that were listed in the sidebar - they're of the form e.g. 313.TS rather than the original descriptive name with a .ts extension. Running Totem from a shell prompt, I can see the following console output: request to play: Man on Earth_20110622_0508.ts 013311314 http://192.168.254.1:9000/web/media/313.TS I tried entering that URL into Firefox, and it started downloading okay; according to the LiveHTTPHeaders addon the response headers are

Why can't Totem play the file? Some other codec needed for video/ts files that I've not got installed? (it hasn't prompted me to install any extra packages) Does it just not like the fact the file extension is upper case? Or something else entirely?
On a separate machine, also running Ubuntu 11.04, I installed the VideoLan client; VLC can browse to the files and play them without any problem. So why can't Totem?

Apr 4, 2010I recently upgraded my hardware to 64 bit dual core and a new Nvidia graphics card - GeForce 210. When I tried to play a BBC documentary, nothing happened. I think movie player starts up and promptly crashes. I tried starting the program manually and asking it to play the DVD. The program crashed and "vanished before my eyes". Oh well! another nvidia story. I dual booted and even Windows Media Player (latest version), refused to play the DVD, complaining of some security mismatch or something to do with the video card driver. I downloaded and installed VLC, windows version and all went well. Returning to Ubuntu, I found that the Linux version of VLC failed. (I have installed the proprietary drivers)

Nov 12, 2010I've just installed Ubuntu and it seems the sound isnt working in it. Anyway - i have two screens. One is a tv and i want the sound to come out of there(its running through a hdmi cable).Works completely fine in windows. I havn't installed nivada plugin thingy as it stops my dual monitors working =(. So maybe this is the problem? From what i remember it worked in wubi though (without nivada drivers)I followed the troubleshoot and couldn't seem to find anything wrong?

Sep 15, 2010I am having problems listening to windows media streams from a particular website ( http://radiotime.com ) whenever I try to listen to a stream from firefox, the page loads then connects but i have no sound (i am actually trying to listen to those two chinese radios [URL].. I have the mplayerplug-in/gecko-mediaplayer installed, but it doesn't work, I tought that maybe there was a problem with that plugin so I deactivated it and installed the vlc plugin, after restarting firefox and trying to listen to those streams again, the vlc plugin tried to read it but it still would not work. I even tried to install the Silverlight Plug-In without any result, does anybody know what I could do to make windows media audio streams work ? it is wierd because i seem to be able to watch windows media video streams from other websites, but i cannot listen to any stream from this one, it used to work for mp3 streams only, but after desinstalling/resinstalling the mplayer plug in, it doesn't work anymore on this website. I can listen to those streams without any problem under windows 7, so the problem isn't coming from the website.

Apr 10, 2010I'm using openSUSE 11.2 64bit in Dell E6400 with Intel video chipset. I can play x264 720p files without any problems in Windows 7, but in openSUSE, I could play it in Totem, but it is very slow (lots of stopping).
In addition, in songbird, if I use the mediaflow add-on,the scroll becomes really sluggish.
In general, I feel like openSUSE is showing less ram usage but higher CPU usage than Windows 7. Is my video card driver is messed up? I really like openSUSE a lot but so it is disappointing....
