Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Get System To Recognize My 24" Apple LED
Jul 20, 2011
I can't seem to get my system to recognize my 24" Apple LED Cinema Display (DisplayPort) with a ASRock Z68 Pro3-M motherboard (i7 2600k, 1.40 firmware) using the iGPU/DisplayPort running Ubuntu 11.04 2.6.38-10-generic with latest updates. The system boots and runs (can ssh into it) but there is no display. The same system running Windows 7 x64 works fine. A DVI monitor also works fine. Xserver-intel driver sees the display but can't set any modes for it.
Log files dmesg lshw Xorg.0.log
Here is an excerpt from Xorg.0.log:

I installed a new, clean hard drive into my old iMac G5, and decided to finally set up a linux machine, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 with the 64bit mac software, and the instal went very smooth, however now there are a few hardware issues.First, the cd/dvd drive loads disks, but the system does not recognize anything inserted, and wont play any media. Second, the built in airport card doesnt want to work either, I can see the icon for wireless at the top right of the screen and it lets me plug in my network name and security, but wont connect or see any wireless networks at all, however, ethernet works fine, and it is how I am able to get online now. Lastly, the screen is slightly shifted to the right and the far right of the screen wraps around to the left side of the screen, its not major, probably a 1/4 of an inch, but it is annoying.
I am sure these are likely driver issues, but when I go to Administration, and Hardware Drivers it does not say I need any drivers. and when I run through "system testing" it says that this version of ubuntu is not genuine, or something like that, but I just burned the install disk last night from ubuntu's website.

I have been going crazy trying to get Ubuntu 10 installed and working on my G3 B&W. When I boot into the live CD, hit Control-Option-F2 to get into a terminal, then do Fdisk -l, it only shows my CD-ROM. I got 9.04 to install, then updated to 9.1, then to 10, but when I reboot, I get the gave up waiting for root error. Tried typing exit, and changing the wait time to 90. I've spent a lot of time on this, and learned a lot. Anyone no how to get past this?

I have been waiting on installing ubuntu on my mid 2010 MBP 15' for a while now. I was wondering if the dynamic GPU switching was supported yet. Does Ubuntu recognize the intel card and can I use it over the nVidia card?

Recently I installed MPlayer with its default gui and its interfaces SMPlayer and GnomeMPlayer. When I'm using GnomeMPlayer it responds to multimedia keys as configured in Gnome shortcuts, even if it's minimized or running in another virtual desktop. But it doesn't happen to the other two gui's mentioned above. I have also noticed that native Gnome applications or with Gnome support like Banshee and Rhythmbox rspond to multimedia keys even when the gui is closed and they are running only in the system tray. But it never occurs in non-Gnome applications like VLC, MPlayer and others. Jetaudio wich responds to these keys in MS Windows running under Wine doesn't even recognize them.
So I came to the conclusion that only native Gnome applications or with Gnome support recognize multimedia keys because, as it seems, they receive the signal from Gnome configurations. Others applications doesn't do so. Here is my question: Is there some way to make all applications recognize the configuration of Gnome multimedia keys shortcuts? (Of course it would not be fine if they recognized ALL Gnome shortcuts because they could conflict with shortcuts from another applications. The idela would be that they recognize ONLY Gnome multimedia shortcuts.)

I have a problem with recognising my mobile phone's memory card in Ubuntu 9.10. When I plug the phone in it starts the mass storage mode, but nothing happens in the PC. I suspect that I may have deleted phone's icon from the desktop, and I don't know how to bring it back. Also the memory card doesn't appear anywhere: nor in the Places tab, nor in Media folder. The phone is Samsung U900 Soul.

I've been trying to do this forever, and I just can't seem to get the system to recognize the install and boot from it. Do I need to create a very small bootstrap partition or something?Just for clarification, I've tried installing to the onboard ide controller as well as the raid controller. Both installed, but failed to be picked up on boot. The system only seems to be able to boot from cd. Furthermore, I can't seem to use the CD to boot from the hard disk.

About two days ago I installed Bodhi Linux on my machine. I like it because it's fast and small. Anyway, I have two issues: I can't get the system to recognize any of my audio cd's, or my USB drive. I don't even get a notification that there is anything in my DVD drive. The other issue is that I am unable to go in and look at my hardware configuration from the main window. I have looked through as many paths that I could think of without killing the system, and I don't want to try anything I know nothing about.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop and at the same time I have Windows 7 (partitioned disk). I use mostly Ubuntu, but I need windows for some stuff. I want to share files of windows with Ubuntu (is weird but when I installed Ubuntu never gave me the option "share files from windows", I dunno why). Anyway, I can see the disk in Ubuntu, and I can see the folder /Documents and settings/, that creates windows by default with my files. However, the route is too long to arrive there from Ubuntu using the Terminal.
I created a shadow link using lndir to arrive to my files easier. It works fine, however, sometimes when I go to the files using this route, these are lightened in red, and when I try to enter to one of these folders, the system doesn't recognize it. After a while, these are in blue and I can go in them. Why it is happening?. What I did Is the "correct" way to do it?.

A cat of /proc/bus/input/devices just shows the keyboard and pc speaker. I am running the 2.6.30.9 kernel on a RHEL 5.4 system. The stock kernel works fine. I have compared the kernel config files and do not see anything different in the INPUT Device area. Could it be that USB mouse driver is interfering? Is there something out side the INPUT Device section that the synaptic touchpad needs?

My questions begin with Virtual Box. I have Windows XP installed via Virtual box. Ordinarily, I hate everything about windows, but unfortunately some things related to my job I am still in need of having some access to some form of Windows. I am wanting it to recognize all of my multiple hard drives that are installed on this system, 4 of them to be exact, so that I can utilize files from all of them.

I have an external hard drive with most of my music on either mp3s or ripped from cds. I have imported the folders into gmusicbrowser but it doesn't show up some of the files. I have also tried rhythmbox and banshee media player but they all have the same problem. The files play fine on my other pc runnin xp pro so they are fine. Also some folders have nothing in under ubuntu but have mp3 files in (as they should) under xp.

Ok so I just installed Debian 7.5 on my laptop and encountered several problems.
First off was the problem with GNOME 3, GNOME 3 failed to load.
Second problem was that the system does not recognize an external monitor via hdmi. Via VGA I do not know do not have a cable to try it out.
Third problem was that my wireless was no recognized.
Dell Inspiron 5537 Laptop
wireless: Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
Graphics card: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) from the 4xxx series
System: 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.57-3+deb7u2 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Before I had Fedora, but only cuz all the devices were recognized by default, for a while now I wanted to switch over to Debian but as I came to relize my hardware for some reason is not working.

So the only experience I have with Linux is all from Ubuntu, and I just spontaneously decided that I needed a change...two days later my triple boot Macbook Pro got slimmed down to a dual boot OSX/OpenSUSE 11.2 machine. But there are some general problems, and I have absolutely no idea how to solve them. First, wireless isn't recognized at all...there isn't even a space for wireless connections. Second, I haven't been able to get compiz to work yet, and I can only suspect that the system doesn't recognize my video card, or the driver isn't installed. Yet again, no idea how to fix this.

I have a cheap 32GB MP4 player I bought on Ebay. I was made in China. I paid $20.00 for it. Under WinXP my laptop recognized it as a flash disk. I used Win Media Player 11 to Sync up my downloads. WMP 11 did NOT have to be running in order for the OS to recongnize the player. I could treat it just like a jump drive.
Ubuntu 9.1 (64bit) won't recognize it. I don't use ver. 10.04 or 10.10 due to problems with video, wireless and other problems. 9.1 works like a dream on ALMOST everything. I'm tired of dual booting.

I'm usually an Arch Linux Fellow so I have little experience with Debian based systems. I'm installing Ubuntu 10.10 on this laptop for my mum, everything works fine apart from the DVD drive. It refuses to detect DVDs at all (I've tried 8 different ones). It grinds and grumbles at me and makes all sorts of ungodly noises. The drive works fine mechanically as it's been used before under Arch and I used it to install Ubuntu yesterday. I've installed all the relevant codec packages and other odds and ends to play DVDs with, but still nothing.

I've been using Ubuntu on my PCs and laptops for quite a while. Recently, I've been allocated a Mac for use in my lab. It is a PowerPC G5 running on Mac OS X 10.4.11. I've installed Ubuntu on one of the two hard disks available, the other one being the disk which Mac is installed in. There was no problems with the installation, but I cannot get Ubuntu to boot. Basically, when I restart the system, it boots into Mac straight away.
There is no boot loader or GRUB. I've tried holding down the options key when the system starts, but for some unknown reasons, the monitor cannot find a signal, so I cannot see what is going on. The monitor can only pick up a signal after Mac starts to boot (or, when I was installing Ubuntu, after the virtual Ubuntu has loaded). Am I suppose to expect GRUB or some other boot loader?

I want to try and dual boot Linux with my Mac but I'm not exactly sure how . This was my brothers computer then he gave it to me but he said that I MUST leave OSX installed. And uh.... He was dual-booting Vienna on it but I don't like Vienna so I want to get rid of that and put Ubuntu on.

I have an RCA Opal, 4GB player. I am having some problems transferring music to it. I first try the player in MSC mode and just drag and drop the files I want to listen to into the Opal's Music directory. That works fine, but over half of the songs I transfer over end up in the "Unknown Album" file. I have checked the ID3 Tags for these songs and they are intact. Next I have put the player into MTP mode to try to transfer things with Rhythmbox, but Rhythmbox doesn't show the player in the sidepanel.
EDIT 1: It may be worth noting that mtp-detect in Terminal returns the message "No Raw Devices Found"
I am on Pidgin right now if anyone just wants to IM a response.
